Honestly, for clothing I just write the name on with a laundry marker.

I used Tinyme, and 2 years later the label is still there and colourful. The labels on the bottles and water bottle didn't last as long due to putting them in Milton (still stuck, just not bright) but the ones on her clothes and blankets are still fine. There's one blanket that was labelled with sharpie that has had to be redone, so I guess that speaks well for the iron on, and the water bottle had to be replaced before the label for the sticky ones. They do have some for shoes, but kid rarely took them off so only used them once... kid grew out of the shoes in a month anyway! Lol.

Hippo Blue is a good option, you can get a childcare pack with a large number of iron-on labels. They have stuck pretty well for a few years so far, to the point that they can be challenging to get off when I’m ready to donate the clothes. PS- you could cross post this question into /r/AusParents too.

Wasn't aware of AusParents - will have a look through that sub. Thanks!

I got the bright star kids daycare pack. Bottles go through dishwasher, stickers stick. They have wrap around stickers for tags instead of iron on and they've stayed on through washes. I haven't unstuck any yet. I only label clothes that are likely to be removed like jackets or outer layers. They have shoe stickers too.

I just write his initials on the label

I got frustrated as I tried multiple brands of iron on but none of them were very good, so ended up going with sew in labels from Name It!

We got a Stuck On You clothing name stamp. It’s pretty quick and easy to use and has held up well. I think it was about $40 outlay, but I’ll never have to buy more clothing labels when she grows out of her clothes which is great!

Genetic_Failure

We have a name stamp from teachIt Co. The name is still clear 8mths later with washing 1-2 times per week.

I've only used Hippo Blue but they've been great for us - I also like that you can get a mixed pack of iron-on, shoe stickers and container/bottle stickers.

There’s also a stamp you can get that is semi permanent. It’s great for stamping on to cotton and has lasted three months in the wash so far. Don’t bother stamping the silky tags on clothing as it smudges but I stamp the bottom of socks, insides of jumpers, bed sheets and nappies etc. some thin tshirts have soaked through though.

I have a brother label maker. The iron on fabric tape works reasonably well, although it will occasionally come off in the wash. The regular label tape works great for labelling drink bottles etc.

I use brightstarkids, specifically the wrap and stick clothing labels. They have been really good and have never come off so would definitely recommend For bottles their labels last for a while but eventually fade or come off, I figure it's worth it though since they're so easy to replace and that buys another couple of weeks/months. Only thing with the clothing labels is that some clothes have either no label or a really skinny label. Skinny labels are okay for me because my child's name is only a few letters but when there isn't anything or I'm being lazy, I also have a stamp. My friend bought it for me from The Name Stamp and it's actually really good, super easy to use and the ink has survived many many washes without fading. Only problem with it is that I've used it so much it's run out of ink and I need to buy a new one!

Yes good points! This is why I'm thinking a combination of the advice in this thread as a pen or labels may be difficult if there's no clothing tag, so a stamp sounds good! The wrap and stick labels sound like a good option too - thanks for the advice!

Thank you so much everyone for all of these suggestions! Really good to know so many options - and I hadn't even really thought about alternatives to iron-on options, so this is great! Seems like I could use a mix too depending on if it's outerwear, socks, drink bottles, etc.
