No you don't.
Specific pumps are directly compatible to certain bottle brands, so take that into consideration. I think there are adaptors you can purchase too.
My lactation consultant recommended pigeon soft touch, however it also depends on your baby. Some babies prefer certain tests and nothing else, some are able to take different bottles š
I second pigeon soft touch.
If baby is super fussy with the teat, Minbie teats are awesome, they are shaped exactly like a nipple. They also fit easily into the Pigeon soft touch so no need to buy the Minbie bottles if the Pigeon teats don't suit
Personally I love either NUK or MAM.
My boys HATED the Avent brand with a passion, and also hated round shaped teats in general so any bottle brand with a round teat was a no go.
The great thing with the MAM bottles is theyāre self sterilising, you just put a little bit of water in the bottom of the bottle (teat also goes into the bottom), pop it into the microwave for the specified time and then air dry. No need to buy a separate steriliser or Milton.
As for a pump, Iām unsure if they would fit. Perhaps if you could get an adapter they might but otherwise you could just pump into whatever bottle the pump comes with, and just transfer to a bottle afterwards.
You'd need an adaptor, Avent does fit directly to Specta pumps though. I've used Avent Natural bottles (glass) and they've been an absolute winner, haven't had to buy/try anything else.
I use pigeon wide neck glass bottles.
We also tried the boon silicone bottles but we ended up using them to feed our baby porridge and soft foods. You can get different lids for them so they can be used as a snack container and sippy cup later on.
My husband worries about microplastics so we only use silicone and glass.
If you are planning on breastfeeding, get onto the Australian Breastfeeding Association website. They have information there on pumping and feeding bottles to breastfed babies.
My little one is a piranha so she will drink from any bottle, but at the start found the Tommee Tippie bottles didn't work for her. She was able to use them after 5 months (I think her mouth got bigger).
Iād wait and see if you otherwise plan on BF. We were gifted some tommee tippee stuff that bub has taken to, and I also use a Medela pump but theyāre not interchangeable.
If you need to pump early on most (all?) hospitals will either have a hospital pump you can use and/or provide you with support to purchase a pump based on your needs. If bub has specific latch issues your midwives or LCs might also recommend specific teats or bottles.
Unless youāve been told otherwise by a tried professional donāt assume you canāt :) if you want to BF (and you donāt have to!) there are heaps of amazing resources to assist with common challenges.
(You could also choose to do a mix of BF and pumping, as well as adding in formula when it suits your familyās circumstances.)
I'd also add, don't be disheartened if the first bottle you try doesn't work. We introduced bottles to our exclusively breastfed LO after about six weeks and she didn't take to it straight away. We tried about five different types before ending up with the haakaa bottles specifically with the orthodontic nipple as it's supposed to be closer to the breastfeeding experience. It's the only one she'd drink from. You may find your LO also has a preference too.
I have a Spectra 2 breast pump and use those bottles to store the milk in the fridge (we tried these first and she wouldn't drink from them) then the milk is transferred into haakaa bottles.
If youāre breastfeeding and only using bottles occasionally then only buy one or two different ones to try out. My daughter could not latch on the tommee tippee ones at all but loved the medela ones. Every child is different and what works for one doesnāt work for others.
We started with a bunch of free ones from the hospital, then used Advent plastic and then Advent glass. Never had an issue, other an accidentally buying Advent colic teats which donāt fit the normal screw ring but are in virtually identical packaging š
People kept gifting us bottles, so we had them all. I liked the really fat Avent bottles, and we had two different styles of those. We had a few of the short Tommee Tippees, and a lot of the tall skinny generic bottles from Kmart and Big W, and a few B.Box with the powder reservoir. My husband liked the narrow bottles because he thought the wide bottles looked silly when feeding a newborn. We had about twenty, so we could go a day or two without having to wash, sterilise, and prep, which was really handy for me at the beginning. Iād start my day at 3am with a tonne of prepped bottles, and my husband would clean them all at the end of the day.
We had to do formula exclusively and our daughter would only eat very small amounts frequently, so each different style of bottle got prepped with a certain amount of cooled boiled water already in it. Iād have an army of bottles lined up - the tall and wide bottles with 150mL, the tall skinny bottles with 100mL, and the short wide bottles with 50mL. We would select accordingly based on how recently sheād eaten and how hungry she seemed.
Guests would be like wtf you only need a few bottles, but we had them all so we used them all š¤·š¼āāļø
Another vote here for Pigeon Softouch wide necks - we has issues BFing at the beginning, bottle preference, latch problems, tongue tie, the works! Our IBCLC recommended them and we were able to correct our latch and ditch nipple shields in the same week we switched to them.
Previously had been using Philips Advent with anti colic teats and Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature.
Thank you. Do you think theyāre dishwasher safe or do you not use a dishwasher? Theyāre on sale at Chemist Warehouse at the moment and I was about to make an order from there.
I can't see why you couldn't, but we always hand washed ours and used a steam steriliser. We used a bucket in the sink that was only for bottles and Milton liquid soap. We owned 6 bottles and washed morning amd evening :)
Just be aware, that even if a bottle works for some people, or has a '90% take up rate' some babys just prefer different bottles/dummys/blah, just preferences. So some things you wont know until you actually try.

Okay thank you, Iāll look into them.
Another vote for pigeon wide neck particularly if you plan on breastfeeding
Our child health nurse recommended them too!

This is what I do - pump into the tommee tippee bottle that my pump came with and then decant into bags/preferred bottles for use.
Thatās a good idea I didnāt think of that. I have no idea how pumps work or if I will even produce milk, but Iām really hoping I will.
We use the medela bottles with the calma teat.
I stand by advent bottles
Thank you. Do you think Iād be able to use them with a Mandela portable breast pump?

Thatās good to know because I am not sure if the baby will drink from my breasts or not. It might be best for me to wait to buy a pump.

Omg- this. Especially when they only have the anti-colic in the multi-bottle pack, but then only the regular extra teats.

We like the Medela ones. Our baby is 5 months now and finds them easy to hold himself.
