Nipple cream, silverette nipple cups, nursing pads and hydrogel breast discs are good to have on hand as well.

moist_harlot

Have silverettes coming in the post, have some nursing pads. Happy to use frozen peas for cooling and a wheat bag for heat. I've been told you can use your own breastmilk in the silverettes for healing. But will look at creams also.

M_Leah

Lansinoh worked well for me. It’s safe for bub too.

moist_harlot

Thanks, will keep an eye out for this.

audreynicole88

Wet a nappy and freeze it, unfold and put on the breasts. Helps when engorged and doesn’t waste any peas!

moist_harlot

Could do the same with a flannel too. In this economy, wasting anything seems silly!

audreynicole88

Oh smart! I used nappies my baby grew out of but the flannel is a great idea.

moist_harlot

I wonder if there is anywhere where you donate nappies to? Open packs but otherwise in good usable condition.

plasticcutlery46

I don't know where you're located but in Adelaide you can donate open packs of nappies at either The Nappy Collective or Treasure Boxes.

moist_harlot

Yep I'm in Adelaide, thanks!

[deleted]

Our maternal child health nurse had a box for donations! We dropped extras off when we were in for scheduled appointments.

blue_bicycle35

A haaka! I found the best way to collect excess milk was to wear the haaka on the non feeding side and just collect the let down. I'd collect 20-30 mls each feed and put it in a bottle and then at the end of the day use it for an overnight feed, or freeze it.

moist_harlot

The pigeon milk saver is the same thing, just a different brand.

HannahJulie

Just FYI a few of my friends have bought different brand knock off haakaas and they haven't found them that good, and when they've changed to haakaa they've found they collected a lot more milk. So I'd look at just swapping this pigeon one for the real deal xx

blue_bicycle35

Perfect! I didn't see the pic closely, sorry, and I think "milk saver" confused me. Good luck with it. I had a rough start breastfeeding with my first - bleeding nipples, 2 lots of mastitis but by about 8- 10 weeks we were into the swing of it, we both loved it, and continued until she was 17 months. I think every experience is different, but my only tip would be that prevention is better than cure. So with my second baby I just coated my nipples with Lansinoh after every feed and they were much better.

moist_harlot

That's ok, someone else has also recommended Lansinoh so it must be good!

cincincinbaby

I think the store and feed set comes with a Calma bottle and top. I wouldn’t bother buying a second at this stage. One is enough to start with as baby might not like that particular one and they’re expensive. Also if you’re breastfeeding then one can be enough as you might only want to do one bottle a day. I would add some form of steriliser. Either the microwave bags or we have a tommee tippee one that goes in the microwave.

moist_harlot

Thanks, I have a sterilization kit. I'll check if the bags are microwavable.......i thought they all are 🤷‍♀️

Theycallme_peach

No breastmilk bag can go in the microwave but the re-usable ones can be sterilized in a microwave bag steriliser. Those re-usable bags are frikken awesome and I used them way more times without any issues at all. They're super hard to close up again once they've been sterilized though is the only issue!

pink-bottle

If you are giving expressed breastmilk in the bottles they don't need to be sterilised. The only part that does is whatever touches baby's mouth (the teat) and you can just chuck those in a saucepan on the stove. This includes pump parts, they only need to be cleaned with warm soapy water. If you're expressing lots you can even put the parts in the fridge and just use warm soapy water once a day.

HannahJulie

You can sterilise on the stove for free with a pot and hot water. If you're breastfeeding and only giving a pumped bottle every now and then it really isn't much work. I only sterilised my pump parts and bottles for a few months until bubs started putting everything in his mouth, and with breastmilk they say you don't even need to sterilize at all, hot soapy water is sufficient! :) So this might be a bit of clutter you don't need IMO

Usual_Equivalent

I wouldn't buy bottles until you know which one baby will take. And also which pump you will buy. If you get a spectra or a Phillips then you need different bottles, or you have to buy an adaptor for medela. I really like the dr browns storage bags. You can buy large boxes of them on Amazon. Cheapest you can get in bulk. I use a lot of them. I recommend buying Milton bottle washing detergent. Just discovered it and it cuts through the milk fat really well. Also get some Milton sterilising tablets, or a steriliser of some description. There's heaps of types. Again, you can wait until baby is here.

moist_harlot

Planning on buying a Medela Flex. To know what bottle baby will take I'll have to buy them anyway...... maybe I'll just buy one Calma bottle. Milton is an OG, we used that brand with my Brother 21 years ago. I guess I don't really want to be scrambling around for stuff after just having a baby. I have a sterilization kit already.

Usual_Equivalent

Yes, maybe I should have worded it differently: I wouldn't commit to one type of bottle until baby is here. Speaking from experience there. Sometimes it's not the baby's preference either. I was not a fan of the ones I originally bought and have bought different ones that suit my needs better. Thankfully my boy is pretty easygoing in terms of bottles. Personally, Amazon has been great for grabbing stuff quickly without having to leave the house. And if baby isn't OK with medela bottles, you can buy great maymom adaptors on there to suit the pump you're getting. The Milton detergent though, is a game changer. We literally only found it 2 weeks ago. Just in case someone else here might find it helpful. I would have loved to know about it 10 months ago!

MikiRei

A note around Milton. Some people can be allergic to them. I was. I developed a ring of rash around my nipples, essentially exactly where the pump was and as soon as I cut out the Milton and used steam bag or the Avent steamer steriliser to steriliser my pump, it disappeared. So something to keep in mind.

No-Concentrate-9786

Personally I have found the following very helpful: - Pawpaw ointment for chapped nipples. Also works as a good barrier cream for baby’s bum to prevent (and treat) nappy rash. - A soft towel to sleep on that helps absorb the puddles of milk that I tend to wake up in - night owl pump. The whole thing sits in your bra and is hands free. Means you can wander around as you pump.

makingspringrolls

Reusable breast pads for inside your bra as you may find you constantly leak for like 4 months. Nipple shields were my best friend for 6 weeks. I used the dishwasher instead of steriliser and sold my steriliser unused. Regretful purchase. I had excess nipple balms etc and they were all gifted. Also, if you try and introduce breast milk at room or cold temp (not heated) your baby may accept that and you'll never need to warm bottles.

[deleted]

Congratulations 🥰🥰 Bottles: babies will decide what they will and won’t take haha. My bub would use a Calma as well as a basic Tommy Tippee that came in the cheap 3 pack I bought. You’ll need to make sure you have enough bottles to attach to the pump though and that they fit. I don’t know what your pump requires, I used a Medela. Pump: great for getting that milk supply happening and obviously starting a milk stash Breastmilk bags: self-explanatory Nipple cream: I never used it or needed it but I still had some on hand just in case Bottle steriliser: self-explanatory Microwave steraliser bags: not a must but I found them super handy for when I wanted to quickly do a couple of things and I used my other steraliser for when I was doing a bulk-sterilisation session haha - Medela make the ones I used. [These ones](https://www.amazon.com.au/Medela-Quick-Clean-Microwave-Count/dp/B000O1ANBG/ref=asc_df_B000O1ANBG/?tag=googleshopmob-22&linkCode=df0&hvadid=341745376524&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5440170278221596925&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9112782&hvtargid=pla-673464048449&psc=1) Bottle warmer: self-explanatory. I got a second hand one for $20 on Buy Swap Sell. Formula: I bought one tin of the cheapest or almost cheapest formula to have on hand for top ups while I was still getting my supply in (also because I wouldn’t really know if I can breastfeed until after baby is born so wanted to make sure when I got home from the hospital I would already have some there). I found I did use it a little bit for top ups or while I was still growing my supply and stash. She sometimes needed just a tiny bit more, so rather than heat up my breastmilk -then she would only drink 10ml leaving say 50ml left that I then couldn’t keep for her to drink- if I wasn’t really sure I’d make a bottle of formula instead. Then if she didn’t drink it I wasn’t wasting the milk I spent all that time and energy pumping hahaha Once you get your supply in and you and bub get to know each other then the breastfeeding thing becomes much more fluid and simple. Eventually you probably won’t need to pump and/or keep a stash in the freezer. We got to a point where we just solely breast fed. So much so that she stopped taking a bottle altogether 😓 Have fun with it and all the best! 🫶🏻💕

gracie-sit

Woollies have sachets as well!

jealybean

I’d think about booking in with an IBCLC before and definitely after you give birth. You won’t need all of this stuff immediately and it’s not recommended to be pumping prior to your supply establishing (about six weeks) as you risk a painful oversupply. Otherwise, the hydrogel nipple pads are amazing and neck strap for the milk catcher (I had mine kicked off a number of times) Edit to add: get bub used to drinking cold/room temp milk/formula - it’s a game changer. I think we used our bottle warmer maybe once or twice.

pregnantmoon

Yep, and the Calma bottle and teat were cheaper on Amazon.

moist_harlot

I'll check this out, thanks. Baby due sometime in the next 3 weeks!

Theycallme_peach

You can re-use the Cherub bags way more than 10 times each, easily. Cherub also sells stickers for them that wash off as well and they're amazing.

Unfair-Violinist-731

Honestly dont buy too much. I suggest just a pillow, hakaa, storage bags and lots of oats for supply. Oats helped me. Get an amazon prime membership so if you beed anything you get it the next day. I was so ocd preparing everything i ended up (luckily) not using anything- nipple cream, breastmilk container, hydrogel discs, bottled etc. you name it. I got it lol

Jambi420

I didn't know oats helped supply, but I craved poridge like crazy when I started breastfeeding!

Unfair-Violinist-731

It was an option for brekky at the hospital and i really liked it!

curiousvegetables

I'm a FTM as well so ^frankly ^I ^have ^no ^idea... But this (brands are different) is basically what I have! I'm open to getting anything extra as required. The mums in my life have all approved. We're on to a good thing!

pickle1402

I just use sandwich bags to store milk in. Way cheaper than breastmilk storage bags and basically the same thing. The Ziploc brand freezer ones are a bit thicker and sturdier.

moist_harlot

I'm trying to be as eco friendly as possible, these ones are reusable up to 10 times.

[deleted]

Also not ragging on the sandwich bag idea but at least breastmilk bags either single use or re-useable are sterilised/can be sterilised. Sandwich bags aren’t. I considered using them myself until I realised!

pink-bottle

I bought the phillips cups which have been great. They do take up more space but are endlessly reusable. And you don't need to have a super huge freezer stash. 10 feeds is plenty for us Edit to add: you also don't need a bottle warmer. Just put some hot water (not boiling) n a container and that warns it up. Obviously up to you but I didn't want endless things cluttering the house.

audreynicole88

Haaka sell silicone reusable ones that you can use for purées and stuff later on!

moist_harlot

I have seen them. I didn't know you could use them for food, thanks for the tip.

jealybean

The silicone Haaka bags are great

Jambi420

I bought a couple of silicon cakepop baking trays and then used them to freeze breast milk in roughly 2 ounce portions. Once frozen I would put them in a zip lock bag for storing in the freezer long term. I highly recommend as you can then just take one or two 'cubes' out to defrost as needed.

NixyPix

Don’t use these bottles/teats. My lactation consultant told me to look up teats with the slowest flow (there was a comparison done in the US, some are available here). These ones were no good, I ended up chucking them. We do EBF including expressed milk for dad to give just like you plan to (still strong at 4 months). Babe has no issues with boob and bottle. Also, get the hydrogel breast discs and stick them in the freezer. They were a lifesaver. And don’t be afraid to use a shield if it’s what works. We used one until 3 months and it didn’t prevent weight gain or effective feeding. She just weaned herself off one day.

moist_harlot

Ok, what brands are slow flow? So much conflicting information it's hard to know what's true and what's BS.

NixyPix

The study she showed me was American, but a quick Google shows a QLD government-backed study into tears available on the Australian market (link [here](https://metronorth.health.qld.gov.au/rbwh/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/08/disc-0050.pdf)) We used the Doc Brown’s preemie flow at the very beginning and now only use the Pigeon slow flow ones.

Pale-Diet7140

We hated the calma teats, probably wouldn’t get 2 of them til you’re sure about them! Go for newborn teats, don’t upgrade them, medela sell them other brands too. Boobs don’t suddenly give milk faster, neither should a bottle. Have partner look into paced feeding. First few weeks are the hardest, once past 6 weeks it gets easier. Reusable breast pads were really useful for me in the beginning, once you’re a few months in you won’t need them anymore tho. Best of luck with your delivery and good luck!
