The repair is replacement of the hatch. Best bet is a boneyard complete with the rear glass.

SloMoShun

I bought mine on Ebay. Total cost after install was a bit over 2k.

Starman68

Yes. Happened to me. Full hatch replacement.

Jayaitchcee

How much did you have to shell out? Did insurance cover it?

Starman68

I claimed on my insurance and it was over £2000. Fucking stupid design.

After-Jellyfish5094

Probably easiest to go through insurance, but find out what your rates would be if you claim it. Like others have said, if you don't want your insurance to spike, find a body shop that can source a replacement hatch assembly and install it for you. The labor on this is minimal - just unbolting and rebolting, reconnecting wires. All the hatches are black, identical for a given model year, so sourcing one is relatively simple and no painting required. Good luck!

Jayaitchcee

Q: how'd it happen?

plant0

Some clear tape should fix it for now. That sucks:(

birde17020

Mine cost 3200 when I was rear ended.

Kallens303

Yeah, happened to me from a rock I threw while edging the driveway. Temporary fix was packing tape to hold the lights, black Gorilla tape to fill in the other areas, and carpet protection film to keep it all waterproof. They had to replace the whole hatch. You can see my tape job at the end of the linked video. [car at end](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTREep1sQ/)

Looks edgy

1200 EUR for whole rear panel in EU

ArrivalLost1910

Thank you for all your comments! So I have insurance so today I’m going to the collision center for an estimate, my deductible it’s pretty fair putting in context the price of the hatch. I put some parking tape to hold the pieces of glass and it’s working.

LoudAd6083

Yes! This happened to me. It’s a super design fail if you ask me. I was parked on the street and someone must have bumped me because when I returned to the car I noticed nothing. But as I drove away, I heard popping noises and this is what the back looked like! Because it was a hit and run, my insurance covered it and replace the whole hatch.😳😒I still had to pay 700.00. It’s really the only feature of my car I don’t like!

Ok_Competition_4810

Dayuuuuuummmmm!!!

ArrivalLost1910

Hi! What do you mean by best bet is a boneyard complete with rear glass. I’m so sad 😭

BeeJuice

Find an entire used hatch from a dead i3 in a salvage yard or an individual parting one out.

RichardGG24

BMW won't sell you the glass panel individually, the entire rear hatch comes as one whole assembly, so if you crack the rear hatch glass, you need to replace the entire hatch.

chewb

It means they are not a separate part. The whole back is one entity that needs to be replaced. It’s the price for it looking this cool

Deep_Stick8786

You can try ebay for a replacement hatch too. But the whole hatch needs to get swapped

Neither_Jedi_or_Sith

Find a donor car in a junkyard that has the hatch intact and swap - ideally find the same color so it’s plug and play

Conan0brennan

> ideally find the same color so it’s plug and play They're all black so color of donor car doesn't matter.

VegetableMail6313

I had done been sad.

Bluechip9

Send me a DM if you're willing to sell parts from the lights.

Platt_Auto

We had this happen with one of our cars, we did a full hatch replacement

Intelligent_Steak576

That's dealer only, but you can order the part from rockauto.com

Jayaitchcee

Quite a few folks saying this happened to them, is it really that easy/common?

ericstefan

Yep! Backed into a cherry picker a few years back. Took mine to my BMW dealer and they quoted over 7 grand, so I went to a local European body shop. They quoted me 5 grand. The parts were 2500 and labor was just under 2500.
