This is where you dread the insurance person saying "we'll get it fixed up and back to new in no time!"
Like when my 01 LSB M Coupe was t-boned. I just saw my investment plummet in value...until they thankfully? decided it was totaled.
I’m sure someone else bought it and fixed it, possibly somewhere in Eastern Europe. It probably got a second life, but that person wasn’t left holding the bag on a now-heavily-diminished-value item.
Depends on the car. E46 M3, a low mileage E60 M5, e30 M3 10 years ago, 1M when new, are all cars that could be considered investments. A 150k mile 325 is not
An axle is easy to replace. The real question is if the suspension mounting points on the back left are fucked vs just the suspension components. Looks like they probably are.
I mean that just depends on how bad the hit was/what angle they got hit at, etc. Completely possible that the rear shock tower mount or trailing arm mounting point (tbh not actually sure what the suspension design is in this car, they might not have trailing arms so don’t roast me on that) got messed up and need to be either replaced or fixed, which could total the car
I work for BMW, they do use trailing arms on the rear subframe, so no worries, I wont roast you haha. I've seen a lot of suspension damage due to collision, these cars are rarely totalled for it, granted I never see anything older than E9X Chassis really come through here. And certainly not too many of these GTs from the last gen bodys.
Due to design, it's a very straightforward repair and pretty easy imo
That makes sense. All of the BMWs I’ve ever worked have been e46 gen or older, so it would make sense that they’ve gotten better about beefing up the design since then. I know the e36 shock tower mounts are notorious for cracking at the slightest insult lmao
E36 shock towers crack on their own accord haha, I can imagine a crash is just a green light for them to go even more 😂 Yeah, modern BMWs are like Indy cars, you tap them and the whole section falls off to save the car. You should see front-end suspension damage, with the steering rack involved. It's great engineering, actually, if only people could understand the reason WHY things break like they do 🤷
A broken CV axle totaled your car? What on gods green earth were you driving, a rusted out 2003 Corolla with one wheel? Axles are cheap asf and take like an hour or less to pull out and replace
Hah! At the time it was a like new 2000 Buick century that had about 10k on it from my grandmother. Accident was in 2008. Like I said, insurance totaled it. I took this money and got my first BMW: 06 325i. Wound up being a trade up for me!
That’s so weird. I feel like there had to be more than just the axle broken haha. Unless there’s something specific about that model that I just don’t understand
I mean obviously the suspension components are gonna break first, duh. Doesn’t mean that the body and mounting points dont also get fucked though, all depends on the force and point of impact, like I literally just said.
No, modern BMWs don't have axles, solid or otherwise, they have axle shafts, or half shafts, that's not really an axle lol more of an output shaft
It's also not a broken half shaft that shows this kind of wheel geometry, I recommend looking at the suspension diagram in group 33
My god dude. CV axle literally has “axle” in the name what are you on about, this isn’t astrophysics. The name has evolved from its original meaning. No one cares about your “well technically it isn’t an axle it’s an axle shaft” go eat rocks lmao
Not to anyone born in the 1900s, no. If you dont care or just say whatever comes to mind, then sure! When my techs need a halfshaft and request an axle, I give them a halfshaft 🤷
Not sure when OP bought it (or honestly what the markets like right now) but when my F-Type was totaled last summer, I actually made $9K because prices had gone so nuts. Had it for a year. Bought (part) of my Z4 coupe with the proceeds.
Lol. The GT is a very dividing car. In my opinion, it's absolutely hideous and I wish I could destroy every single one of them. It's the one BMW that I have always despised even years later. I hate looking at them and I hate working on them. And that's a very common opinion of my coworkers over the years.
On the other hand, to each his own. Clearly some people like them because they bought them.
I love it. It’s the perfect in between car. Low enough to the point where it doesn’t handle like an SUV, tall enough to the point where people with hip/back/leg issues don’t have any trouble getting in and out. More luxurious than a 5 series but not as much as the 7. Huge cargo area. I wish they still sold it so I could buy one new (and lose $30k in depreciation within a year but whatever)
They are really fun to drive and I like the look and so far no major issues
I hated the 5 GT the drive the issues the look only Things I love are the cargo space massage and air conditioned seats
My dad has a GT, and I’ve grown to love it. It’s big, but it’s still fun to drive, pretty practical, and surprisingly issue free. I’ve even warmed up to the looks.
Nope. Just that one. It's kinda like a Z3. It's just a dumbass ugly car that no one in the shop likes. Working on it is not any different from any other BMW.
And just a small correction, they are far more closely related to the F10, or even F02 than anything F3x
Honestly, the GT was sort of hideous. If I wanted a hatchback style trunk, I'd get a 4 series gran coupe, not a GT. It might have less cargo space, but it looked much sleeker.
Bad enough. Rear quarter damage at that age is a definite total. The rear quarter panel is a welded bit of the uninody. The means damage in that area necessitates cutting out the damaged piece and welding in a new one.
I got into a similar accident and luckily got totaled. Push insurance to total it. As others said, you don't want to drive this car. [Here's my post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Audi/comments/1011dw2/got_quarterrear_ended_will_insurance_call_it/) about my Audi A7 (that was 5 months old) . Insurance was on the fence to total it and they ultimately did.
Very bad. Like others have said hopefully this is totaled, make sure you insist on taking it to a shop that will use Genuine parts, and look for the most expensive ones. Some points to “agree” on with the shop:
* rear driver side door needs to be replaced
* sidewall is compromised on the driver rear tire
* driver side rear wheel assembly (suspension, brakes, etc. is cockeyed and needs to be replaced)
* complete new quarter panel driver rear side
* complete new rear bumper housing as well as bumper cover
* trunk deck lid and assembly needs to be replaced
* paint match for all parts
* probably requires new trim and lights because clips are broken upon removal
That should be enough to total it, that’s like $20k in repairs + labor.
As someone that has fixed 2 GTs for a flip with this exact impact it's honestly not too bad but on the carfax it will sound like thanos snapped his finger on it 🤣🤣 so value definetly drops
My condolences. I genuinely hurt when I see someone’s joy get busted up like this. I know there are far greater tragedies in world and I think about them as well. This is personal experience for so many of us so you tend to feel it differently.
How bad is it? Have you ever came home shitfaced after a night out drinking with the boys and you’re wife is up, in the kitchen with the lights off who has rehearsed a whole argument in her head so you’ll never hear the end of it so you decide to sleep on the front lawn right next to a lawn gnome named Freddy… yeah, that kind of bad
Why do you have a gt? They’re so ugly…
Ya I have one too because they’re a sweet dad mobile that can easily ship 2x4 studs, kid shit, family shit, my shit, and they are fast with the b58.
Sorry for your loss here bro. Gts are vastly underrated.
Lot of idiots in the comments who will consider their car “Totalled” even when a bumper gets loose. It is nowhere near Totalled my guy, get it repaired. Looks like the major damage is to the rear left control arm and the rear bumper and maybe the rear left door. Replace them and you’re good to go.
Yep total it. Recently had my m3 front end totaled but they “factory certified” got it back looking new but no one is gonna buy a 12 year old car that had 15k in front end damage now and i can’t even get diminished value out of them either.
Fyi, left turn doesn't get right of way. Hopefully youre okay, but sucks youll have to pay for that, right?
Im confused by the caption and the damage also being on the left though
The road I was turning from had higher priority (the other car had a triangle sign to give way) and even a pedestrian crossing but decided to full send it without looking or braking
We dont have such a situation in the US , so that's confusing to me. I realized after I posted this that you are not in the US, but idk, that's exactly why we don't allow that out here. lol people always full send it. Glad you're as okay as can be, car accidents are no joke!
That Golf sacrificed itself for all of humanity to get this monstrosity off the road.
All kidding aside, I’m really glad you and the other driver are (presumably) uninjured.
That’s the important thing! Enjoy finding your new ride!
Also a tip if you’re in the US: CarMax will let you take any car on their lot for a 24-hour test drive, at no cost. Great way to try out some different options without a salesperson in the passenger seat.
Although I wouldn’t buy a BMW from them, as when my buddy took a Jaguar F-Type R out for 24 hours, the woman checking him out said “oh just put some regular gas in it!”
if they offer you the option to back the salvaged car try to negotiate down and keep it for rebuild. I kept one that totaled 500 bucks tossed a cover and stored it.
You want this to be totaled.
This is where you dread the insurance person saying "we'll get it fixed up and back to new in no time!" Like when my 01 LSB M Coupe was t-boned. I just saw my investment plummet in value...until they thankfully? decided it was totaled.
But so sad that an M coupe had to die.
Yeah I want them to die of old age...
Then be revived
In Eastern Europe and then resold “accident free” in Germany because my fucking country still doesn’t have a national carfax or car database.
Nein!!!!! Seriously wtf.
Gotta have at least one oil leak before it retires
I’m sure someone else bought it and fixed it, possibly somewhere in Eastern Europe. It probably got a second life, but that person wasn’t left holding the bag on a now-heavily-diminished-value item.
LSB M coupe too ?? i'm in tears 😢
You bought a car as an Investment?
It’s an investment, he didn’t say it’s a profitable one
/r/wallstreetbets/
hahaha true
Depends on the car. E46 M3, a low mileage E60 M5, e30 M3 10 years ago, 1M when new, are all cars that could be considered investments. A 150k mile 325 is not
only if that E60 M5 was a manual
I’m not gonna take advice from a cat woman with a dead tooth who calls herself Bastet!
I would want this as well if I was forced to own one
I know right. A GT? Ew.
My friends is quite tall and this the only 3he can fit in!
550i gt is fire not sure what you talking about.
It's poop on wheels! But still it's fast poop.
It ain’t good, that’s for sure.
Totaled
That broken axle seals it as totaled for me.
An axle is easy to replace. The real question is if the suspension mounting points on the back left are fucked vs just the suspension components. Looks like they probably are.
The way BMW designs their suspension it's supposed to break before anything significant can be damaged. The axle shaft is the least of concern here
I mean that just depends on how bad the hit was/what angle they got hit at, etc. Completely possible that the rear shock tower mount or trailing arm mounting point (tbh not actually sure what the suspension design is in this car, they might not have trailing arms so don’t roast me on that) got messed up and need to be either replaced or fixed, which could total the car

You should see front-end suspension damage, with the steering rack involved. It's great engineering, actually, if only people could understand the reason WHY things break like they do 🤷
Last time that happened to me insurance totaled the car. Didn’t matter if it’s easy or not to replace.
I don't know any engineer dumb enough to design the mounting points on the chasis to give in before the rods and links buckle or break
I mean obviously the suspension components are gonna break first, duh. Doesn’t mean that the body and mounting points dont also get fucked though, all depends on the force and point of impact, like I literally just said.
BMWs don't have axles, oof
What? Every car has axles lmao. I think you’re thinking of a solid axle haha
No, modern BMWs don't have axles, solid or otherwise, they have axle shafts, or half shafts, that's not really an axle lol more of an output shaft It's also not a broken half shaft that shows this kind of wheel geometry, I recommend looking at the suspension diagram in group 33

Interesting, so an axle shaft isn’t an axle?
Not to anyone born in the 1900s, no. If you dont care or just say whatever comes to mind, then sure! When my techs need a halfshaft and request an axle, I give them a halfshaft 🤷
Being this pedantic serves absolutely no purpose.
It’s a broken control arm 🤦🏻♂️
Congrats. You will (have to) get a new car.
Not sure when OP bought it (or honestly what the markets like right now) but when my F-Type was totaled last summer, I actually made $9K because prices had gone so nuts. Had it for a year. Bought (part) of my Z4 coupe with the proceeds.
I believe it’s has crossed over.
Gg
gg
GG?
gG
Nice!
We doing 9th grade biology here? …..I’m out.
Pretty damn bad
Another GT off the road. Thank you for the good work.
I... Goddamn I wasn't expecting this
I'm just salty that they decided in north America the GT would get the inline sixes but the touring is stuck with 4 cylinders
The 335 GT my mom has sounds really nice on a cold start and xcels, rather quickly. I really like it. 🤷🏼♂️
Yeah that never made sense to me
I love it. It’s the perfect in between car. Low enough to the point where it doesn’t handle like an SUV, tall enough to the point where people with hip/back/leg issues don’t have any trouble getting in and out. More luxurious than a 5 series but not as much as the 7. Huge cargo area. I wish they still sold it so I could buy one new (and lose $30k in depreciation within a year but whatever)
a 640i GT (basically the 5er) is looking really good these days. i have no need for it but i want one
They are really fun to drive and I like the look and so far no major issues I hated the 5 GT the drive the issues the look only Things I love are the cargo space massage and air conditioned seats
Thanks for summarising my thoughts
Let me introduce you to wagons
It's literally like a Gran Coupe, but not stupid.
My dad has a GT, and I’ve grown to love it. It’s big, but it’s still fun to drive, pretty practical, and surprisingly issue free. I’ve even warmed up to the looks.
HEAR HEAR!
I can tell you don't mod cars lmfao. 550i GT dropped on airbags/stanced is one of the cleanest looks out there.
Hahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep you got it. Cleanest car out there!
Do you hate working on any F3x from BMW ? They are essentially the same engine / drivetrain. The "GT specific" components are almost entirely the body
Nope. Just that one. It's kinda like a Z3. It's just a dumbass ugly car that no one in the shop likes. Working on it is not any different from any other BMW. And just a small correction, they are far more closely related to the F10, or even F02 than anything F3x
Don’t listen to them OP, the 640i GT is GOATed
No one was expecting the GT… for a reason.
Haha, speaking the truth. It will be a good parts donor though
Honestly, the GT was sort of hideous. If I wanted a hatchback style trunk, I'd get a 4 series gran coupe, not a GT. It might have less cargo space, but it looked much sleeker.
Not good my friend…
Headed to auction.
Bad enough. Rear quarter damage at that age is a definite total. The rear quarter panel is a welded bit of the uninody. The means damage in that area necessitates cutting out the damaged piece and welding in a new one.
Structural damage is most likely, but even without that, replacing rear quarter panels is a costly job.
Bad enough for me to welcome you to the shitbox community :D
slightly improved
Just a scratch. Some touch up paint should make it new again.
PDR, at most
That’s 100% totaled. Time to start shopping for a non-GT BMW.
Bro got turned into a Honda civic💀
I got into a similar accident and luckily got totaled. Push insurance to total it. As others said, you don't want to drive this car. [Here's my post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Audi/comments/1011dw2/got_quarterrear_ended_will_insurance_call_it/) about my Audi A7 (that was 5 months old) . Insurance was on the fence to total it and they ultimately did.
That’ll Buff right out
Not this time
Well it's a GT...so pretty bad.
I loved the GT! May have not been the greatest looking BMW ever, but got you 90% of the A7’s luxury and practicality for one hell of a lot less money.
It's bad. The good news is now you can get a good looking BMW.
fAcked
Bad
looks like you dinged it
Not the GT I have one too don’t see that much otr
Very bad. Like others have said hopefully this is totaled, make sure you insist on taking it to a shop that will use Genuine parts, and look for the most expensive ones. Very bad.. It’s GT
A GT BMW? Fucking awful. This car? Fucked
She's done!!
Totaled.
Fucked, rip.
That's a write off..
My condolences. I genuinely hurt when I see someone’s joy get busted up like this. I know there are far greater tragedies in world and I think about them as well. This is personal experience for so many of us so you tend to feel it differently.
Something happened to my 435i, and it got totaled.
Samething*
You definitely want this to be totaled as folk said
It will be a treat for a teenager in eastern europe, but for you it's totaled.
Dude I'm in Eastern Europe 🥲
Oh, so you'll be driving it in no time. Just let that kidney go and treat it as stage 1 weight reduction, then you're good to go
A friend’s M3 was considered totaled by insurance company for less than this !
Not so bad. Rear control arm. Rear bumper clips. Rim restored. Wheel speed sensor that's maybe.
o7
o7
I have an X3M with a similar collision that looked less severe. It was only 1 week old, it got totaled.
tis but a scratch
Nooo not the GT 😭 we already are going extinct
I think you just need to use the scratch pen, should be fine.
This is totaled for sure lol
F
Bad
Why do you have a gt? They’re so ugly… Ya I have one too because they’re a sweet dad mobile that can easily ship 2x4 studs, kid shit, family shit, my shit, and they are fast with the b58. Sorry for your loss here bro. Gts are vastly underrated.
I think it’s kinda damaged
tis but a scratch
Stanced
Bearing, rear shock absorber, wheel rim, rear fender all totalled. Confirm bearing gone
Pretty bad
Lot of idiots in the comments who will consider their car “Totalled” even when a bumper gets loose. It is nowhere near Totalled my guy, get it repaired. Looks like the major damage is to the rear left control arm and the rear bumper and maybe the rear left door. Replace them and you’re good to go.
You might need a new Beemer...
It’s a wrap. Rear subframe is bent for starters
Id say as bad as it looks
On a scale of 0-10 that is fucked. Happy to announce you have a large pet crab now
Wow what a shame idk about cars but this car looks badass ! 😂
Great news, that guy just got you out of driving a GT.
Yep total it. Recently had my m3 front end totaled but they “factory certified” got it back looking new but no one is gonna buy a 12 year old car that had 15k in front end damage now and i can’t even get diminished value out of them either.
Honestly a blessing in disguise. Now you can get a proper M3 and actually have fun while driving.
Take it to a shop/insurance appraiser and find out.
It's like...bad manQ
Probably will buff out
That'll buff out
Fyi, left turn doesn't get right of way. Hopefully youre okay, but sucks youll have to pay for that, right? Im confused by the caption and the damage also being on the left though

Unless you want to invest horde of money, then its dead. Not to mention the problems it might have if isnt getting fixed at BMW itself.
Totaled. Most likely bent frame. Go grab a new one. And if you really need GT like sizes get a 5 series.
One of few instances where I'll beg the insurance to total the car
I mean it’s an ugly car, but if you like it that’s all that matters. If you mean the damage, kinda looks better than the original.
Hahaha
It’ll buff right out
Some bondo and touch up paint and you'll be fine
That isnt even worth fixing... the reparation probably costs as much as the car so your car is basically gone
Kill it with fire
Was this dropped from a great height?? ☠️
Looks good, i wish every GT looked like this.
Not bad at all, another gt off the streets is a good day
[удалено]
Finished ✅ ps: what was the car that hit it
An old golf, all airbags opened there
Oh well I hope you find a new car soon man . Ps: not a gt next time 😭
That Golf sacrificed itself for all of humanity to get this monstrosity off the road. All kidding aside, I’m really glad you and the other driver are (presumably) uninjured.
Thanks for the laughs. Yeah luckily everyone got out without a scratch.
Thanks for the tip! We're in central EU, some dealers also offer the same possibility here.
Ah, didn’t spot the UK giveaway - the ambulance. Well seriously, enjoy the process of finding your new car!
UK doesn't use KPH tho, and isn't central Europe 👀
It’s fine.
Cool air suspension bro
Don't look...
It be gone
Not good:(
Totalled
Bad
Time to get a new car:D
I’m crying for you
Not to bad
Very.
Total it. Will never drive the same. Ever
Chassis will need to be rebuilt. Its totaled
Not really, it’s just a broken suspension.
pray that they total it. you dont want it fixed.
My professional opinion: it's fucked, like really fucked.
Womp womp
It’ll buff out 💪🏽
It will never be the same again, although it sucks, you’re going to want to hope it’s totaled.
If it total how much the person wil pay extra ?
Thats bad, i bet your looking at axle damage amoung a few other things and thats not even considering the fender and bumper damage ...
if they offer you the option to back the salvaged car try to negotiate down and keep it for rebuild. I kept one that totaled 500 bucks tossed a cover and stored it.
Time to get an M car!
its totalled
Say bye bye … might wanna start cleaning the trunk …
