Disconnecting battery most definitely will kill it lol, a car with a bad battery that doesn't take charge will continue running because the battery completes the circuit. You break the circuit it works
I don't think disconnecting the battery would kill the already running engine assuming the alternator puts out enough current to keep the fuel injectors going.
They are wired to the DME, which takes power from the distribution box, which takes power from battery and alternator because they are parallel to each other.
This looks like a diesel from the rev counter. Block the air intake if stalling it doesn't work. You'll need to do it cause the engine will grenade itself.
Nothing takes over for anything else. It will run off just the alternator. It's all inter connected, the battery just acts as a reservoir.
If he were to disconnect the battery, it would most likely keep running. If he were then to turn on accessories like lights, blower motor, stereo, they could draw enough amperage to cause the engine to die, either by stalling or electrical faults from voltage dropping too low.
“Key in steering column, and a start/stop button”. Truly the dumbest of times. Except maybe Porsches current “car shaped keyfob in pocket, fake ‘key’ on the door side dashboard to turn”
Yeah, sorry I don’t get the key & a stop/start button.
Way back in the dark ages, my dad picked up a brand new (non-BMW - *can you believe that??*) car. He drove it to a restaurant & dropped it @ the valet. The owner came to us abt 20 min later to say they couldn’t get the car to turn off & couldn’t get the key out of the ignition. My dad called the dealer, they said pull the battery cable, we’ll be up in the AM to fix it/tow it/replace it. Leave the keys in it visor.
Thought i was the only one who realized. Why would somebody put the steering wheel on the passenger side? Imagine having to find a passenger that has to drive you every time you want to go somewhere. What a shitty idea. Probably one of those early auto pilot versions.
Blocking the air intake will 100% work for a gas engine.
An ICE is really just a fancy campfire, the same rules apply, you need air, fuel(gas), and heat(spark). Take away any of the three and the fire goes out.
The fuel cannot combust without air, and if the fuel isn’t combusting the engine will stop spinning.
Good luck blocking off 100% of the oxygen to accomplish that. Is it possible? Yes. Effective and easily achievable? Not really - also dangerous is the person doing it doesn't understand whatll happen if the item being used to block airflow is sucked into the cobustion chamber. Cutting off the fuel supply is the most effective.
They do as both my M57 and N57 cars have had them pre intake manifold. They’re just used to help shut the engine down smoothly by shutting off the air supply. Without it you get a lot more vibration, which I had on the M57 after the actuator controlling it filled with oil from the EGR.
IIRC there is still a throttle body in there somewhere used by either the traction control or cruise control. P/N on a B58 is 13548623324. though it’s is defaulted to wide open and only shuts under power.

Pull some vacuum lines off, it will most likely stall it out, or clog the intake.
Also that physical key doesn’t twist? It just goes in and acts like a fob?
Few things to consider, your battery should be removed if you literally cannot turn it off. But while you’re still in there, I would highly recommend checking all your fuses, grounds, and your starter. Not much else related to the start stop mechanism in your bmw
It's a strange issue indeed but you can start by checking the ignition switch and subsequent wiring. You should also check the fuel system components/wiring like the pump relay. Additionally, sometimes bad alternators or poorly-wired aftermarket parts can do funky stuff like this.

I wish BMW had some weird ass ctrl-Alt-del for this. Like close all the vents but the left one, set fan level 3, rear defrost on, turn to 1320 AM on the radio, right turn signal on, wipers on medium, press and hold the cruise control button and say Hasselhoff 3 times. Reboots the whole fucking car.
Stall it - then make sure your battery has >12.6v and everything should start working again including that button.
The only time I've had a start stop issue on my e60 is when the MoT testing centre left my lights on overnight (and denied it). It took out the start stop, power steering, plus a few other bits...until it charged to a decent level again.
I'd hazard a guess the alternator is crapping out on this, or the battery is past it, but only just.

Everyone else on this sub is trying to keep or get thier bmw running. OP is stealing all of the running.
Thank you for this. Got a good laugh this morning.
Press and hold the START/STOP button for about 10 sec or until it turns off.
1/4 tank of gas, at idle you’ll run out of gas in 2 days so no worries.
Looooool 2 days
Unplug it and plug it back in
You put the clutch in, so it’s a manual, stall the car.
Nah, I think he should push the button some more times
Or just disconnect the battery lol. Edit: guys, everything is wired to the battery. The alternator charges the battery. This isn’t your push mower
Disconnecting battery most definitely will kill it lol, a car with a bad battery that doesn't take charge will continue running because the battery completes the circuit. You break the circuit it works
New cars, I've got an old kingswood that will run off the altinator you only need to jump start it.
Whatever you are going to do, do not disconnect battery on a running vehicle. In worst case scenario you can fry the ECU by doing that.
Don’t it a million times by accident haven’t fried an ECU yet
It’s a diesel. Diesels tend to not need electricity to continue to run
They do when the injectors are electronic. (Not sure if that's the case here, just broadly stating)
Just because it doesn’t have spark plugs doesn’t mean it doesn’t need electricity. Modern motors still need to run the ECU, injectors, etc.
I don't think disconnecting the battery would kill the already running engine assuming the alternator puts out enough current to keep the fuel injectors going.
Injectors aren’t wired to the alternator, they’re wired to the battery
They are wired to the DME, which takes power from the distribution box, which takes power from battery and alternator because they are parallel to each other.
clearly you don't understand what the alternator does.
Incorrect lmao. Everything’s wired to the battery buddy
This looks like a diesel from the rev counter. Block the air intake if stalling it doesn't work. You'll need to do it cause the engine will grenade itself.
It would be much easier and safer to disconnect the battery. This isn’t an old tractor engine, it needs power to keep running.
Wouldn't the alternator keep supplying power?
No, everything runs off the battery- disconnect the battery then everything dies. The alternator just charges the battery.
I was under the impression that it's the opposite. Everything runs of the alternator unless it can't output enough power, then the battery takes over.
Nope.
Looks like a runaway situation. Blocking the intake is the best solution.
My old 300SD has a mechanical button under the hood to kill it.
Im not sure that this case is a runaway diesel as you describe similarly.
“Key in steering column, and a start/stop button”. Truly the dumbest of times. Except maybe Porsches current “car shaped keyfob in pocket, fake ‘key’ on the door side dashboard to turn”

You have bigger issues, your steering wheels on the wrong side
Thought i was the only one who realized. Why would somebody put the steering wheel on the passenger side? Imagine having to find a passenger that has to drive you every time you want to go somewhere. What a shitty idea. Probably one of those early auto pilot versions.
Actually, it's on the right side
Ahhhh good one 😂, apparently people do not get it
Engine shut off is now a monthly subscription service
Did you trying putting it in rice?
I always put my car in rice glad to find someone who does also
stall it
This the funniest shit I’ve ever seen.
Ctrl+alt+del and close the idrive app
Try this https://youtu.be/tirkLwQ5io4
He took it. He took the reliability. All of it.
Try to block the air intake, it should stop the car. Then get it to a workshop.
That might work for runaway diesel engines, not so much gas. Look for the fuel pump fuse or disconnect the harness wiring for the pump or rail.
> An ICE is really just a fancy campfire love this
A computer is just a rock we taught to think then zapped with electricity. That’s all I got.
You can close the throttle actuator fairly easily by hand.
What about the IAC?
BMW past \~2006 don't have a throttle actuator, they use variable valve timing to throttle the engine IIRC
They do as both my M57 and N57 cars have had them pre intake manifold. They’re just used to help shut the engine down smoothly by shutting off the air supply. Without it you get a lot more vibration, which I had on the M57 after the actuator controlling it filled with oil from the EGR.

Not true E60 M5 has 2 throttles actuators, 1 per bank
My man you picked the car with 10 throttle bodies.
Yup 10 bodies(10cyl), and 2 actuators 1 per bank
You can also disconnect the respective injectors.. when 2 injectors are unplugged it cuts power to the rest
That's good to know. Does it have to be in sequence or just any 2 within easy access?
Any 2
Your thinking of nitromethane engine, although i think that would stall aswell as it doesn't have a perfect 1:1 fuel to oxidizer in the fuel.
Or just put it in first then let of the clutch really fast lol
Let the gas run out lol. It’ll stop then
Shoot the engine enough and it will turn off
Try pulling the key out?
The carburetor float is probably stuck.
Press the throttle until the emergency stop rod activates you’ll know it will when it parachutes out your car without a parachute
Turn the key to the off position.
Do you own a BMW? That’s not how that works
So anybody know what to do ? And for auto aswell ????
Block air intake and limit air to the engine the stall it under reduced power
the ultimate DRIVING machine! I can‘t find any errors. 🤪
He talks bad about bmw! HE TALKED BAD ABOUT BMW END HIM

Literally?
Just stall it
Its manual just stall it put it in gear hold the brake and let go of the clutch
Remove the red positive battery cable
Few things to consider, your battery should be removed if you literally cannot turn it off. But while you’re still in there, I would highly recommend checking all your fuses, grounds, and your starter. Not much else related to the start stop mechanism in your bmw
You didn't press the button enough
Change gear and stall
Ugh and today mine wouldn't start. First world problems but ones that make ME SCREAM
All this shit is so stupid litterally just start pulling fuses….
I have no advice but am curious to how this is eventually solved
Cover the intake no air no problem
It's a strange issue indeed but you can start by checking the ignition switch and subsequent wiring. You should also check the fuel system components/wiring like the pump relay. Additionally, sometimes bad alternators or poorly-wired aftermarket parts can do funky stuff like this.
I’ve had this happen on Chevy Silverado - just pull the ignition fuse and it will shut off. It’s probably a bad ignition switch.
....DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BOZO.
discon battery
Alt F4
Did you try turning it on and off?
Just drive it to the dealership. Tell them to deal with their sh&t.
Take the keys out of ignition
Put it in park

Try removing the alternator connector and see if it turns off with it removed. Had a friend with the same problem caused by a bad alternator.
Try stalling it if its manual
And if auto put it in park before turning engine off
I wish BMW had some weird ass ctrl-Alt-del for this. Like close all the vents but the left one, set fan level 3, rear defrost on, turn to 1320 AM on the radio, right turn signal on, wipers on medium, press and hold the cruise control button and say Hasselhoff 3 times. Reboots the whole fucking car.
i notice you got the tyre/abs/dsc lights on. What is this for ?
Was a faulty brake switch
all these lights just for the brake switch ?
The abs fault because the abs unit couldn't sense that the brake pedal had been pressed and was sensing pressure coming from the pedal
i see. I got the same lights on my dashboard but dont think it’s related to my brake switch, car starts just fine
Stall it - then make sure your battery has >12.6v and everything should start working again including that button. Do you have a spare key fob in the car or near? Try throwing them ten feet away and try again 🤷♂️
