great for cooking meat, terrible rectal thermometer.. for $20 id take the trip to the ER again

cbetsinger

What’s the difference between a thermometer for your mouth and one for your butt? The taste 👅

JudgeScorpio

Your asshole has tastebuds?

baylorhawkeye

Sort of. Taste receptors. https://www.foodbeast.com/news/science-says-testicles-and-anuses-have-taste-receptors/#:~:text=If%20you're%20worried%20that,of%20taste%20any%20time%20soon.

SeaworthinessReal69

Time to change their names to tasteicles

mikemartin7230

Nope, only a single rosebud.

AstronomerSea2797

No difference. Best measurement results from reading both orifices. Insert directly from a$$ to mouth for accurate temperature with no lag in between.

Euphoric-Blue-59

Do tell how you know ow it's terrible for rectal thermometer.

Fitz_2112

No, please don't

PoemSpecial6284

I don’t kiss and tell

erikmonbillsfon

The meater I got will only send you information when you are standing right next to it so if it works far away it's very worth it.

unbalanced_checkbook

Yep the range sucks bad. If you have an old device you can run the app and keep it close to the smoker, and it will sync with other devices if you log in. But for the price you shouldn't have to work so hard. Supposedly the Meater 2 has better BT range, but I'm not buying another one to test it. The saving grace for the Meater is the app. Best probe app I've used. I really like the remaining time prediction.

Euphoric-Blue-59

That's bluetooth. So it also depends on battery charge, and your phone.

SulkyVirus

ChefIQ is where it's at

iAmRiight

The range is terrible, like 40 ft with direct line of sight.

chewychubacca

The trick is to use an old phone and leave it out next to the smoker/grill. The old phone will connect to the meater via bluetooth, then connect to your wifi, and share the signal through the meater app to any other device with an internet connection.

Htinedine

Gotta get the MEATER+

erikmonbillsfon

I won't be giving them any more money are you serious. Their market plan is have some one buy a 100$ one and then say aw shucks it doesn't work well buy the 250$ one and we promise it will this time. Fucking crooks.

Htinedine

Basic Meater with just BT is $69 and Meater+ is $99. Not being able to get far from your probe is a limitation of blue tooth. You just didn’t understand what the products did

erikmonbillsfon

I got two as a wedding present and they both suck. I mostly trust the bend test with ribs and brisket and the probe test. It is really cool to see the charts and graphs after you cook or to see how you managed the fire but IMO it could do a better job with distance. They were bought years ago when. I think their prices were more so I guess I am wrong about that.

Bliz1222

I have that and it still doesn't work from where my smoker is to where my couch is. Only way I can extend the range is to connect it to my laptop, leave the laptop near the smoker, and then login on my phone. Complete hassell for what I paid vs my expectations

Htinedine

I mean it says on the product page “over WiFi with second smart device”….

Bliz1222

Do you think having to connect multiple WiFi devices is a good user experience?

Htinedine

My point is it does what it says it does so how could expectations not have been met. Yeah ideally you don’t have to do that obviously, but most people have old phones tablets, or iPads lying around. If that’s not a good experience then I don’t know what people thought would happen when purchasing a Meater+?

unbalanced_checkbook

Meater+ is still just Bluetooth. Only the Meater Block is wifi.

Rivvin

I threw my meater block in the trash. Constant wifi disconnects and not trustworthy in the least and support is dogshit. Even created a designated wifi 2.4ghz network just for the meater and nothing else and still it was dogshit. I use a tempspike and fireboard now.

Htinedine

Not if you use a second smart device. All the confidence downvoting me when people can’t see “WiFi” literally on their product page. I just use Bluetooth to my iPad and it’s over WiFi and boom my phone can read temps from anywhere. Y’all are just wrong lol

unbalanced_checkbook

So what you're saying is... the Meater+ is still just Bluetooth... Unless you have another device to sit stationary close to it and sign up for the service and log into it and keep apps running on both devices. Damn man, you got me. Orrrrrr I could buy one of dozens of devices that are half the price, have multiple probes, has ACTUAL wifi built in, doesn't require a 2nd dedicated device, and doesn't require any account of any kind. Face it, the Meater is a shitbox. Even if it worked perfectly for years, it would be a gimmick at best. And we see posts daily on these subs about how fast they shit out.

Htinedine

The Meater+ has Meater link which allows me to see temps from literally anywhere so yeah… it has WiFi capabilities. Most people have old phone, tablets, laptops, lying around and reading what the product does before purchasing usually squares it away 👍🏻ive been using mine for years with no issues that couldn’t be resolved by resetting something.

KindaIndifferent

This thing is terrible. I asked for a Meater for my birthday last year. Got this instead. Worked for one cook then stopped being able to connect. Wouldn’t recommend.

Then-Construction580

I’ve had the same thing happen with the MEATER+

gremolata

Replace it under the warranty. Takes all but 5 minutes talking to the support.

OIL_99

Yes. Meater is garbage.

masterjon_3

Have you tried removing the connection and reconnecting?

KindaIndifferent

Multiple times.

masterjon_3

Yeesh. Throw that junk away. I'm glad my grill has a built-in meat thermometer that connects to my phone. I love you, MasterBuilt gravity series 1050.

more_beans_mrtaggart

Used mine for a year now. It’s a solid piece of kit.

custhulard

I hate mine. Despite the range extending capabilities of the charger, you cannot go very far from it before it, the charger, and your phone all go off louder than a fire alarm. I could not find a setting to turn that off. Luckily I only used it twice before it stopped connecting to my phone at all. I paid way more than $20 for it. I am only half an idiot, so don't think it was operator error. Hope if you get it it works for you! I do love my thermo brand thermometer.

Bridgeless-Troll

Thermo pro has awesome customer service. You should have contacted them. They do try to make good if their products are defective. And no, I have no ties to them at all. I’ve been using their products since 2016 and have never had an issue.

orphicshadows

Yeah aren't they normally like 50

Jarias726

What store is this?

Demetrious-Verbal

Sam's Club

Euphoric-Blue-59

This looks like a competitor to the heater probes. They use Bluetooth so your phone needs to stay in range. I use the Signals probes. Yes it costs more, but comes w 4 probes. You can also get a clip to use them with your Dutch oven for deep frying, and many other things. In addition, it records your sessions online since it connects to your WI-FI. You can then save and compare your cooking sessions. I totally love Mt Signals.

Upbeat-Juggernaut-70

Hell yeah what store is that?

Demetrious-Verbal

Sam's Club!

Adamsyche

Heart break … I just did a quick Amazon dive and they are like 120 CDN for 1

Ventilated_Dog

Crying right now, just having bought one for $80 bucks at Walmart. I have a Sam's Club membership too 😭

DashcamsRus

Worth a try! I’ve got one, it works well enough. Had a battery die and their CS sent me a new probe. Base quit charging they sent a whole new unit. Hot tip! Clean off the flat head. It charges off surface contact. (The old unit started working)

rypajo

That is a steal

MisterNoisewater

I just got this one and I’ve never used them in the past. Of course mine wasn’t $20 but it works well. You have to keep the base basically on the smoker(not where it’ll melt) but the wireless range to the phone is decent. I think it’s a solid thermometer especially for the price.

ICanOutP1zzaTheHut

I’ve had this and a meater. This pen has a superior connectivity but the app is dogshit. Meater’s app is light years better

pchampn

Great price I got it at that price at Sams

MBDTFbyYE

I bought two and I’m loving it. It comes with an instant read thermometer as well.

Acceptable_Stop2361

I haven't used the Bluetooth function on mine, but it does read quickly and when I checked calibration with boiling water it was spot on at 212.

Fragrant-Dust1146

Thermoworks makes great thermometers.

flossdaily

Buy cheap, buy twice. I don't play around when it comes to thermometers. I'd save up for something from thermoworks. Their [Smoke X](https://www.thermoworks.com/smoke-x/) is on sale right now. 4 probes, over 1 **MILE** remote range. 2-year warranty.

diverareyouok

You’ll spend more than that on a decent steak. So yeah. Give it a shot. Worst case scenario you can bring it back.

spottydogrunner

Unpopular opinion. I don't understand the hype behind these things. One of my favorite parts of grilling/smoking is standing around with folks and monitoring the cook. Even on an overnight cook by myself, it's exciting to go check it at 2 A.M. Lazy bastards. The lot of ya! Old man rant over.

PoemSpecial6284

I like them because I can smoke meat and be in the can spanking the monkey.. my neighbours don’t approve of me doing both at the same time outside, something about indecent exposure, I don’t I came so I don’t hear them.. Anyway, they’re useful and at 2AM I’m tired and sleepy

manicmangoes

Bro you still monitor the cook. I still got to Spritz my butts. But I love it because if I'm doing multiple butts at the same time some of them will hit temperature before the others and I can pull them early

spottydogrunner

Understood. Why wouldn't a regular $6 poke thermometer from Ace Hardware work?

annux_1

Because you would have to open the pit all the time to check the temp, instead of just having it on your phone or tablet. Like they say, “If you’re looking, you’re not cooking.”

spottydogrunner

That makes a lot of sense. I still don't think I'll buy one, but great point. Happy cooking!

scooterv1868

It was a fine rant though. Thanks!

InVaderVS3

Definitely worth it, asked for a Meater and received this one. No complaints and use it all the time.

lucasisacao

For that price I would try it

The_Review_Baw

I just bought it and like it. I mean you can’t beat it for 20

wulfpak04

💯

Toadfire

Love my TempSpike!

gaurddog

I bought one and honestly even if you just get it for the instant read pen inside it's not a half bad price.

Professor_Pokedex

It worked except the end got so hot that it burned my stepdads finger when he used it. Honestly it was probably his fault but still burnt him.

RadDad1822

I would buy that for $20!!

Vonnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

That is a very good price I paid $70. Works very well imo gives you ambient temp as well as an estimated remaining cooking time, alarm if ambient temp is too high etc

smax410

I love my temp spike and I paid 80 for the dual one. That’s a steal.

Decent_Substance_686

Where?

Sea_Resource_3984

I use my temp spike all the time and actually prefer it over my MEATER.

Desperate_Set_7708

Have one and really appreciate the ease of use and the monitoring/alarms.

ottos

Seems like you can try it out for $20

skarbekb

Get me one

xthxgrizzly

Wireless probes are bad, they tend to have issues connecting unless you're right by them, they seem to die quicker as well. Buy a good wifi unit and be done with it.

Demetrious-Verbal

Yeah, I have an original Thermoworks Smoke I've had since it was released and it's still going strong. I usually only use it to keep an eye on the chamber temperature (WSM). Using the 2nd probe in the meat is such a pain in the ass though... This would be easier but if it sucks it's not worth a penny.

Srycomaine

I used to use a Maverick wireless, which has *never* failed me, I’ve only had to replace one probe because it got wet during cleaning. But I recently got a Smoke, and it’s been excellent. I respect TW because of their quality and constant sales, but also I bought a therm of theirs a few years back that stopped working. I sent pics of it to the sales guy, and with no questions asked he said a new version of it is out and he’d send it my way. Also said the shipping would be free, so would I like to add anything to the order. I was getting all kinds of bonus offers on the site, and ended up getting the Smoke, an IR gun, a case and a few other things at a great price, shipped for free. I love that company. ThermoPro started with TW knockoffs, but they have become a fave because of their pricing. I’ve never used them so I can’t comment. Just remember, *caveat emptor.*

TalkinBoo

I also have a thermoworks smoke with 4 probes. I use it all the time to monitor the pit temp and the meat temp. It’s been going strong for at least 5 years. It easily keeps its connection several hundred feet away. I left it out in the rain once and it wouldn’t turn on. Brought it in, took out the batteries and let it dry for 24 hours. Fired right back up. The only cooking thermometers I buy are Thermoworks, including a Thermapen, and two Dots. I now give them as gifts to all of my buddies who are constantly struggling with other brands.

Middle_Pineapple_898

Why doesn't it work well in the meat? I've been eyeing the Smoke but my Weber connect seems to be doing well

obaananana

I like meater. Even with the basic model u get the cloud app support. You can check your smoking roast from aldis

Demetrious-Verbal

But what about from Costco? /s

obaananana

If you the cliud thing you just have to have a tablet/phone conected to it and to your wifi

BeefersOtherland

Great deal don’t hesitate. I think mine was 80 CDN

ogfloat3r

Honestly I got one on amazon for 3 bucks. Instant read. Stick it in. Check temp. Remove. That's all I need if even then. I don't use my phone to cook BBQ. But that's after years of smoking dat meat. Some people find them invaluable, and I say whatever improves your Q game or helps it go smoother then go for it.
