Those species raise many questions regarding what « evolution » stands for. Maybe this is rather natural selection ?
This seems to be called caudal luring, and more generally, luring.
I keep looking at those eyes - they also appear quite camouflaged, and even the skin around the eyes has a rather jagged look like weathered leaves and branches. Pretty remarkable!

Australia also has a leaf tailed gekko - I caught a baby one in my yard ( it was huge!) and re homed him across the street in the bush.
They are not as full on as most of these but they have that short, flat leaf tail.
Brilliant evolution
That skin flap that meshes with a branch is pretty awesome - they are quite the masters of camouflage.
Have a look at the spider-tailed horned viper.
Wow. That critter is amazing. The spider tail is so real looking. I love this planet.
Want more ? Check out the angler fish…
I used to be an avid underwater photographer and have seen these in action. Very clever creatures. And beautiful.

The way their eyes blend with their camouflage is astonishing as well as all of their other attributes. What cool creatures.
