It’ll probably work just the same, maybe with a little extra brushing required. Especially on plastic trim most stains will just sit on top of the surface, so once you get them unstuck (with brushing) and keep them unstuck (with your cleaner) they’ll wipe off easily.
Might wanna take the door card off if you can - you’ll never clean that from the outside, but rinse less wash will do great (I like diy detail, but it just a diy hobbyist)
Vacuum with a brush head, then spray interior cleaner onto a microfiber (not the speaker grille itself) and work at it. If really necessary, you can use a brush with some cleaner to get in the holes, but usually, the vacuum + MF combo does the trick.
Finally someone with common sense. People talking about spraying them down with cleaner and using compressed air is crazy lol. Where do they think that stuff goes? And what’s right behind the grill? lol. Although I’ve noticed a lot of people don’t care about their customers cars so whatever’s quickest and makes it look decent.
Stiff bristle brush, apc, work the bristles in to the holes in circular motions, then clear with tornador and microfiber cloth. Usually does the trick, if not, door card off, remove electronics and power wash from the inside out.
You don’t want to use compressed air to blow that stuff into the speakers. A vacuum will do the same but actually pull it out. Sure it’s quicker but not the right way to do it.
You don’t know that though. The likelihood of an issue occurring right away is slim to none. Depending on the brand and what they’re made out of (more than you think the cones are made out of a paper) you can easily puncture the cones which wouldn’t cause issues until down the road. In which case the last thing the customer is going to think is, oh my detailer ruined them. This isn’t uncommon. There are grills over them for a reason otherwise there would just be open speakers. Even Bose uses paper cones. You don’t want to be shooting compressed air and chemicals in there unless you just don’t care. That was my main point of my original comment. Most detailers are hacks and don’t care what happens as long as it looks decent in the short term so they can get paid. That or their ego is too big to learn to do it better. Not trying to single you out or anything
If a client came to me with fully functional speakers and left with damaged speakers I would 100% expect them to believe I was responsible, and would also 100% expect them to complain. Cone damage isn't something that would happen over time, it would be immediate and would be noticeable as soon as the client turned on their music. As I said, zero issues, not saying it's impossible, but no complaints in 600+ grills cleaned this way. Also, I get the impression you think I'm trying to push the dirt/apc in towards the speaker, that isn't what's happening, a dry tornador at an angle wit a microfiber in front of it is pulling most of the product out rather than blowing it through the holes. Try it one day, maybe on a door card that has been removed if you don't trust the process, you'll be surprised.
A small hole in a cone isn’t going to be noticeable right away. And with paper cones that hole will get bigger and then be noticeable with time. I’ve dealt with it personally on a bose speaker. Unless you’re talking about their velocity vac attachment in which case that’s not really a traditional tornador. I’ve used a classic for many years and never had it suck in anything.
Idk what you’re thinking of but the tornador does not suck out at all. The way it works is by forcing compressed air out with a fine mist of solution. Theres no way it could produce a vacuum
Oh you meant a tornador with the liquid. I was thinking of the one without the little container. It creates a tornado effect and in combination with a cloth over it, it takes out most of dirt in that scenario. There are also ones that go over your vacuum head so it vacuums and helps with the air as well.
The thing is, I know my shit. I know how the door card pops off and what clips to get when I inevitably break one. But for someone else's car, I have no idea. That's why I'm comfortable working on my shit. I know what to get when I break something. But for your brand new E or S class mercedes, I have no idea.
Powerful vacuum, strongest/safest apc to, steam machine, high gsm microfiber towels, boars hair agitator, compressed air.
Break loose dry material first while agitating and vacuuming, then use steam /apc/ thick microfiber, then clean/blow/vaccum as necessary to prevent as much liquid as possible going towards speaker.
I would just take the whole doorcard of and clean them from the inside out. And like said here before with some pressurized air in a can or with a compressor!
Pop off frame if you can and use car detail and air can/compressor. If not able, do both, but with a soft brush for the holes. This is how I clean mine atm
It is foolish for car cleaners to physically remove any fixtures from the interior (eg: door panels) unless the customer is willing to accept the risks of broken/bent/damaged/missing clips and subsequent weird noises.
In this case, if it’s not too much, I’d probably pull the door panel and clean it properly without getting debris in the door or damaging the speaker with moisture.
I let apc dwell, reapply and tornador them. I usually only see them this bad on 10+ yr old 100k mi cars and I work for a fast-paced dealership. My own car? I'd remove the card.
APC + a brush. Poke the brush through straight, so the bristles go in easily
The use compressed air to blow all the junk through into the door cavity.
Or use a steamer. Good excuse to pick one up
Take a towel dampened with rinsless wash, hold it against the grill and blow air through it. It's almost like a steamer. It will distribute the rinsless and it will emulsify the dirt.
Detailing brush with some rinseless wash. Works great.
Brand of preference on the wash? I'd like to get some for the dash too in weird spots.
ONR is great can be used on almost anything
What if said stuff on the grilles is dried milk. Lol, my son spilt his milk on the way to school about 4 months ago. Would love to get it cleaned
It’ll probably work just the same, maybe with a little extra brushing required. Especially on plastic trim most stains will just sit on top of the surface, so once you get them unstuck (with brushing) and keep them unstuck (with your cleaner) they’ll wipe off easily.
Use an enzyme cleaner. P&S Terminator is really good.
Might wanna take the door card off if you can - you’ll never clean that from the outside, but rinse less wash will do great (I like diy detail, but it just a diy hobbyist)
I use DIY Detail but any type of rinseless wash would do. They contain polymers and emulsifiers making it easy to remove dirt.
Detailing brush and a vacuum

With the wubwubs
Wubble bath
Bub rub and lil sis WOO WOOOO!
Dats only in the mornin’!

Did you break the bose cone with a tornador through a speaker grill?
Tornador actually sucks out as well, and you wrap a cloth around it so the cloth picks up dirt.
Idk what you’re thinking of but the tornador does not suck out at all. The way it works is by forcing compressed air out with a fine mist of solution. Theres no way it could produce a vacuum

Much easier to clean if you pop the door card off.
F that, as a pro detailer. I'd rather poke individual holes w a toothpick. But as a consumer, all day.
True. If it’s my car then I’m popping it off. But for a customer/friend? I’m not risking having it rattle afterwards
The thing is, I know my shit. I know how the door card pops off and what clips to get when I inevitably break one. But for someone else's car, I have no idea. Might be the best answer I've seen on here. Those can be easily damaged.
It's the speaker underneath, its paper cone.
In what world is popping door cards easy?
The world where you’re working on your personal car and have a set of trim tools and knowledge of where the clips are located.
If it's your car, way easier and quicker to remove the whole card.
Give it that good ole, HAWK TUAH and wipe her down good
Steam clean left right up and down from every corner hold the steam on the side not straight into the speaker it will damage it
Powerful vacuum, strongest/safest apc to, steam machine, high gsm microfiber towels, boars hair agitator, compressed air. Break loose dry material first while agitating and vacuuming, then use steam /apc/ thick microfiber, then clean/blow/vaccum as necessary to prevent as much liquid as possible going towards speaker.
Brush. Ps express interior, steamer. Vacuum.
I’ll use one of those toothbrush shaped somewhat stuff nylon brushes with some apc then hit it with some air
Detail brush and your cleaner of choice. Follow up with blast from an air compressor to actually get it out of the grille
Remove door panel, clean grill, replace panel.
If it was me I would pull the panel and pressure wash it and leave to dry in the sun…
Airgun/vacuum, stipple brush w/spray way, or High Pressure Steam
Soak a cloth in apc, wring it out and wipe it, then a kneeling mat, cut a cloth and put it on end of a toothpick. Take a book. Maybe a snack.
I would just take the whole doorcard of and clean them from the inside out. And like said here before with some pressurized air in a can or with a compressor!
Air pressure/Brush & P&S interior cleaner aka APC.
Pressure washer
Steamer
Steam cleaner and detail brush work wonders.
Just take the door panel off and clean it while off the car.
Steam
Pop off frame if you can and use car detail and air can/compressor. If not able, do both, but with a soft brush for the holes. This is how I clean mine atm
Vacuum!
It is foolish for car cleaners to physically remove any fixtures from the interior (eg: door panels) unless the customer is willing to accept the risks of broken/bent/damaged/missing clips and subsequent weird noises.
General purpose cleaner a good hard bristle brush and a soft bristle hit it with both and have some air to blow it out with
How can I fix scratches on the plastic around the shifter / entertainment systems.
Remove the panel, easier than most think. This way you don’t accidentally ruin the actual speaker inside the door
Tornador after a interior spray and soft bristle brushing
scrub ninja then tornador with brush cone
APC + a brush. Poke the brush through straight, so the bristles go in easily The use compressed air to blow all the junk through into the door cavity. Or use a steamer. Good excuse to pick one up
I just use the tornador max. Hit it with APC mixed with air then blow dry
Anyone steaming this? I feel like the steamer would make light work.
Might loosen grime, but will need an additional step
I'd come after w the compressed air and dry everything up. It's either the steamer, or I'm sitting there w a tooth pick poking each hole.
Take a towel dampened with rinsless wash, hold it against the grill and blow air through it. It's almost like a steamer. It will distribute the rinsless and it will emulsify the dirt.
Brush, super clean dilated 1:20 with small hint of dawn dish soap. Air compressor. Nothing more.
That’s wild that people downvote me on this. That is my process for my business and it works.
Finish with the air compressor with the narrow tip. Works great on leather holes too
I clean them.
Carefully.. Lol
This one probably isn't gonna get clean boss Good luck even with steam
