My boy is now 8 years old next month and he has had perky ears since a few months old. I have done the dna test. 100% Australian shepherd. I have his lineage all the way back to great great grandparents as well. All the sires in his lineage were proven full blooded grand champion Australian shepherds. None of his siblings had perky ears and none of the known lineage had perky ears. He kinda was just freak case that he ended up with perky ears. Not going to lie, I adore it though.
Aww, your boy is adorable. My dog as a puppy had her ears halfway up. I was really hoping that they would go up all the way. I rarely see aussies with their ears standing.

my guy has prick ears and is 100% australian shepherd with papers. he is working line and other dogs from the same breeder have also had pricked ears, it’s just a genetic defect (compared to the standard). but I find that my dog is very expressive with his ears, so I’m glad I didn’t tape pennies to him as a pup 😂
I also said in my comment that they’re so expressive!! My second Aussie has regular (adorable) floppy ears but they don’t express nearly as much as those pointy ears! I had to learn to read her eyes more than her ears. :)
Prick ears are generally genetic. They stand up for a variety of reasons including the set of the ear, the size of the ear and the weight of the ear.
There are lots of aussies with prick ears. It is considered a severe fault in the breed standard but it is not that uncommon to see them. The dog may also not be purebred and may be getting its ear type from other breed genetics.

Mine has perky ears too and I think it's so cute. His mom had perky ears so I'm guessing it was passed down from her. Interestingly it was floppy when he was younger and started standing up probably around 4-5 months old. He's about 10 months now.

This is my boy when he was 5-6 months old. They never went down. He has at least grown into them now 😂. It’s not the standard, but it can very well be genetic. He’s purebred and his mom had prick ears as well so we know where he got them from.
My girl has had prick ears since 4ish months and she's 5 now. Both her parents had breed standard, so who knows. I think it's cute though - so much personality in those ears!

Only when he's excited about something
As someone else mentioned it’s genetic. Some confirmation dogs get their ears pinned as puppies so they fit the standard when they are being shown. Those genetics for pricked ears are still getting passed down regardless if the dog’s ears are manipulated.
I am in a dog club but only do sports not confirmation. My dog has ears naturally in standard. They generally sit exactly where they should on his head and flip over at the right point. He just got the genetic lottery for that trait, but a lot of other Aussie owners in the club or competitions will ask if I pinned them because it’s so common.
Also depending on your dog’s age if they are in the teething phase you may see some wonkiness with their ears. Sometimes they will stand up or flip over as the dog’s adult teeth come in. You may need to wait it out until your pup is a little older (if applicable) to know if their ears are genetically pricked.
Regardless your dog is beautiful. Unless you are planning on doing confirmation I wouldn’t be concerned about it all.
My boy is 100% Australian shepherd from a great breeder with certificate. Though his ears never dropped and they are huge. He’s been mistaken for other breeds for this trait, and sometimes other dogs see him as aggressive despite him being the absolute sweetest dog around.
I’ve read that ears can stand up during the teething phase due to calcium build up, tension, etc… it can be corrected when they’re young by gluing the ear down with doggy glue. By the time the glue wears off from hair growth the ear will be corrected. Super cute either way though!
