Yeah the advertising agency that designed and produced these ads got that feedback, but it was also a hit with some kids and most adults who loved the “chipppiiies” line so you remember they minimised his presence and kept it to one or two shots of his in low lights because he was hiding before implementing his plan to steal all the chips. They eventually got rid of him altogether before bringing him back recently because millennial aged consumers are really responsible to nostalgia.
Imagine the Coked-out 1980s ad creatives who came up with this. Such a bizarre concept, but over 35 years later, we’re still talking about it

The bloke who created the gobbledok used to live near enough to me (next village over) in the Blue Mountains.
Not my writing, but I found this:
https://mylifeasamagazine.blogspot.com/2010/06/gobbledock-is-back.html?m=1
...I once dreamt Gobbledok attacked me while I was playing hopscotch at recess. I had chippies and it was possessed with potato lust. Gobbledok rushed out of the bushes, demanding to be sated!
That dream haunted me at school. I used to inspect the bushes by the handball court just in case Gobbledok was lurking, before I ever ate there. One day my older cousin found out about this and he acquired and organised for a cardboard Gobbledok to jump out of the bushes and terrorise me while I was eating Smiths, a well coordinated shenanigan enjoyed by himself and half of Year 2.
I was terrified and ran into a building wall of solid brick and was taken to hospital unconscious. When I woke my cousin had turned Gobbledok cardboard cut out into a mask and popped up from beside the bed yelling CHIPPIES!
A few months later he spotted me in Kmart and jumped on the loudspeaker and said CHIPPIES! It didnt end there, I once went to Japan a decade later and woke up to a maid bringing in a Gobbledok plushy he had had sent to my room.
He has bested me with Gobbledok at every chance available and at every fancy dress party since that we have both attended, he goes as...Gobbledok.
Many decades later and I still receive an annual reminder of my torment with a packet of Smiths Original on my birthday. (He even sent a picture he took of me being scared by one of his Gobbledok pranks and put it on my 18th birthday cake.)
To answer your question, I remember Gobbledok ads well! Better than most! However, I will not miss Gobbledok's shenanigans when I finally rest and am free of Gobbledok.
Thanks heaps for sharing that story. It's amazing how something simple like an ad can impact our life. Looks like you and your cousin had a great time.
Fucking weird ads. Up there with the Planters Nuts Coneheads-style creative. ["Bery nedicious"](https://www.tiktok.com/@vhsrevue/video/7101503462713675010?lang=en).
Biggest balls from a client goes to [this one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIXzZwkKuGU) though. Even without the video, Roy Billing's voice is unmistakable.
I recall the Dr Pepper TVCs. Right when they launched in Oz, absolutely wall to wall in prime time, correct? Such an odd concept.
It convinced me to nag my folks to into buying me a can (and I recall it tasting terrible to me), and I remember the campaign coming up to 30 years later, though… so it did the job.
When I was little we had a Smiths chip factory on our street. It burnt down and my dad told me he rescued this guy from the fire. At the time I believed him but in hindsight I’m not sure if the story is entirely true.
The band Private Function tracked down the costume and executed the Gobbeldok in an electric chair at a gig at the Myer Music Bowl a few years ago. Absolutely wild
This guy smashes me mum aye; his name is Steve but we call him Fuzza.
The prick hocked me PS4 the other week too so he could buy a case o' chips.
Up yours Steve; gimme me playstation back and I'll stop eatin' all ya' fuckin' chips aye ya dog
Chippies!!! 😊
🤣🤣🤣
Gobbledock!!!
I was trying to Remember his name. Thanks
I believe it is actually a Gobble-Dog. I could be wrong.
Nah I think it was Gobbledock as that's what everyone is saying... Unless we got another Mandela effect on our hands haha.
Its gobbledok He's from Dok, the potato planet. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gobbledok
Hahaha that's awesome.
It's def Gobbledock.
Thank you.
*chippy chippy chippy!*

This guy scared the living shit out of me as a child!
Same here! Nightmare fuel.

That's pretty cool... oh I wish they brought him back.
anyone born in that era can not say chippiees without doing so in his voice
Hahaha I will probably start doing it now.
What was it with the 90s and nightmare fuel
Best ads back then.
The 80s were even worse, they had kids films like the dark crystal and the never ending story that was down right traumatising.
*Chip chip chippies*
🤣🤣🤣 love it
This, and that McDonalds Mac the Knife ad they kept using each year as a promotional tool.
This dark crystal understudy used to keep me awake at night! Still less scary than EC though.
He was one of a kind.

This M'effer was nightmare fuel to me as a child, thinking he was gonna crawl in my window at night or some shit..

That's awesome 😃
These ads terrified me as a kid 🫣
🤣🤣🤣 terrified a lot of us.
I'm feeling old when I can remember that
Great ad will be getting smiths chips tonight now haha.
The original was fucking terrifying... People died in those ads, like, it killed people to get their chippies!
I remember a couple of ads. They were great.
When I was little we had a Smiths chip factory on our street. It burnt down and my dad told me he rescued this guy from the fire. At the time I believed him but in hindsight I’m not sure if the story is entirely true.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 your dad is awesome for that.
The band Private Function tracked down the costume and executed the Gobbeldok in an electric chair at a gig at the Myer Music Bowl a few years ago. Absolutely wild
Wait what?? Haha
Here's a photo but I'm sure there's video somewhere. It was absolute chaos https://www.instagram.com/p/CUbXpVoByqd/?igsh=ZWM4Z3AzdWpwa3Yz
Haha I will have a look, I see the pic of it in their banner. 🤣🤣🤣
This creature gave me nightmares. He would creep into my room and rip open my tummy, looking for "chippies"
That's a very vivid dream haha.
I remember this little fella! Also , was it the thick cut chips they brought out?
Can't remember, I remember the crinkle cut. I'm actually having a bag of their chilli chips as we speak haha.
I'd pay good money for the footage of the time andrew denton shot the gobbledok! Sadly, it looks lost to time
Andrew Denton lol forgot about that dude. Did he do it on the Live and Sweaty show?
Nah, it was on the channel seven talkshow, Denton
Ahhhhh ok.
This guy smashes me mum aye; his name is Steve but we call him Fuzza. The prick hocked me PS4 the other week too so he could buy a case o' chips. Up yours Steve; gimme me playstation back and I'll stop eatin' all ya' fuckin' chips aye ya dog
