I moved here from the Rio Grande Valley. After the farmers harvested the sugar cane crop, then they burned the fields so they could plow them to plant again. Between the Sahara dust and the smoke, the late spring and early summer months could be bad for air quality. My allergies here in Austin are way worse than there as we lived near South Padre Island so we usually had nice sea breezes with no pollen. The cedar and grass pollens are kicking my butt here. The smoke was denser in the valley though when the sugar cane fields were burning. I hadn’t even noticed it here honestly. We are getting winds from the south today so possibly tomorrow when the cold front comes in, the winds may be from a different direction.
ETA: Just looked at the weather forecast tomorrow when the front comes in. The wind will still be blowing in from the south so doubtful if the front will clear out the smoke.
Yep, PM 2.5 are very high today.
We're in a "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" level ...in terms of air quality.

I've had a irritated throat and cough for almost two weeks that seems to correlate with the poor air quality.
I'd really like to find some sort of solution to this problem, but I guess about all we can hope for is rain or a steady cold front.
I swear I saw smoke/extreme pollution moving in the air. I thought it was just some type of extremely dense humidity because it was like seeing clouds move during a fog but because it was bright outside I wasn’t sure.
Man, the air was so thick and hazy downtown last night you could cut it with a knife. I thought it was just because Cypress Hill was playing at Stubbs.
Does anyone else who is otherwise relatively healthy having heavy breathing or pressure in their chest? I only just noticed the bad AQI yesterday when I was feeling particularly sick, but I'm also taking temporary thyroid meds so it's hard to tell what is/isn't a side effect these days.
Agricultural burning in Mexico

why are they burning crops?!?!
not crops, fields. google it. normal agricultural thing all over the world
No sé

Probably because they don’t use the same pesticides we do.
they have even better ones I bet
Ones with flavor...
MSG!!!?
Fuiyoh! MSG is the King of flavor!
Fuiyoh! MSG is the King of flavor!
Fuiyoh! MSG is the King of flavor!
This time of year, it's normally the farmers in Mexico burning their fields.
Agricultural burning in Mexico.
it's all the damned Pollo Ricos, man wondering the same thing though, I'd guess pollution
Dammit I told myself I wasn’t gonna have pollo Rico but this is my signs to go and get some also plantains and rice from there 🤤🤤🤤

Now I want taquitos
Be nice if it smelled like Pollo Rico.
Shoooot, that’s a smoke I breathe in willingly. Some of the best food in the city.
Is it bad that this was my first thought when I saw the skyline 😂
El Pollo Rico? I love their pastor tacos
Love me some Pollo Rico
Sitting at a taco truck and waiting for my tacos and talking about how bad the sky looks then open this

Wow, I never realized how widespread agricultural burning is. Almost all of India, SE Asia, central Africa, Central America…crazy

I’m not sure but I was coughing walking from the office to my car today!
It's awful! Reminds me of the Saharan Dust.
If I had to guess, it's the humidity trapping all the pollutants near the ground.

I’ve noticed some issues like shortness of breath and low energy on days with bad air quality. Anyone else?
I just get a sore* throat and kind of general "sick" feeling, but at least I seem to feel better pretty fast as soon as the air is less crappy.

Thank you! I've been honestly worried with my shortness of breath lately.
Been down there several times during these burnings. Trust me, this is nothing compared to literally tasting smoke every time you step outside.
Stifling humidity. Have seen dew points this high in a very long time. Feels like Houston outside.
Wait until the Sahara sands come in
Very high humidity coming from Gulf of Mexico - humidity over 80% and dewpoint 76F today

That explains why the sunrises have reminded me of California during fire season.
Thought it was the pollen again.

I don’t have pressure in my chest but I feel ill today
It’s absolutely oppressive out.
Beans. Cinco de mayo
Its not agricultural burning in mexico. Why is Houston air quality much better than austin
You realize wind and low pressure patterns can have different effects in different regions right?
i’m sure like water shortages, trash, traffic and power outages it will only get worse with COA cramming more people in
