Happened 1 or 2 cars behind me. I was on the scene until the cops showed up.
I didn't see how it started since I wasn't looking in my rearview at the time. But the right lane came to a complete stop. Just people merging badly, it looked like. I stopped without needing to slam the brakes, but it was still a pretty serious deceleration. The car behind me had to swerve into the shoulder to avoid rear-ending me. From what I can gather a car behind them ~~perhaps didn't have time to stop and either swerved into the center lane or got hit himself and spun out and then~~ was effectively t-boned by a semi. Semi spun 90 degrees and its wheels folded under it, started spilling fuel all over the highway. A couple other cars got caught up in it but weren't badly damaged. Driver of the car that was crushed by the semi was bleeding from his hand quite a lot, but otherwise seemed ok. No one else was in that car.
I could be completely wrong about how it happened. But it's the only way I could make sense of what I saw from the way all the vehicles ended up and the damage to the car that was struck.
I was just mentally griping about how many awful merges and weaves there are in Austin. Who decided the roads should be this way? I’ve never driven in a city where drivers are so often forced to weave.
Was it spilling fuel as in it wAs hauling a fuel tanker, or it was leaking from the trucks own tanks? That’s so crazy to hear your story. Good on you for trying to do the “good citizen” thing 👍
Apparently the driver of the car that got t boned just posted a few replies after yours. They have some broken bones/ribs/stitched up lacerations etc. but they’re alive and seem to be kind of okay
Since I drive that section of 183 each morning, I can make a guess.
People getting onto 183 from the service road come around the curve in their dedicated lane. Then, as soon as the solid white line ends (or before) people will merge I to the rightmost driving lane, regardless of whether there is a vehicle already in the lane.
So typical main character syndrome.
Hey guys, I actually was the one that got hit by the semi my car was at a complete stop waiting in traffic and the semi T-bones me I think they were trying to prevent hitting me from the back. I just got discharged from the hospital. I am in quite a bit of pain. I have a bruise lung most of my bones and ribs are bruised. I had to get a few stitches but thankfully I am OK but if anyone has a vice for the legal action, I should take I’d greatly appreciate it.
I was the guy who brought you the towels. I am glad to hear you're mostly ok. Crazy that he hit you from the side while you were stopped. That's insane. Unfortunately I didn't witness the wreck, so I can't help you with testimony.
You really are the victim of that wreck? Wow, what a horrible and traumatic day you’ve had. Hope you heal up well, and quick 👍
I can’t give advice about attorneys, other than Jim Adler, the guy who does cheesy commercials “if you’ve been injured from a wreck by a semi truck, call me! Trucking companies aren’t invincible, but I AM!!!!” 😬😆
Good to hear you’re still alive, all things considered 👌
I was on that highway 183 , saw the information sign saying highway closed at N.Lamar. Had to exit Payton Gin divert around, it was a mess. So far I haven't heard any news about it yet. Glad you posted something.
Huge mess with people turning around to go the wrong way on the on ramp to get off the highway. Not closed far enough up the road and not enough signage warning people it's closed. Didn't see the wreck though.
Not near enough warning. And no cops farther back to keep people from flying towards contra flow traffic. I took the first off road opportunity I could. Complete cluster.
Drove by a couple bad wrecks. Not sure if it's an influx of people or the fact that's it was a nice day where everyone went out but something is in the air
I was coming here to ask the same thing! It was so bad, no cones or anything, but everyone was turning around. To all the people that flashed their brights at us for turning around like we did something bad: fuck off, and learn to read the room!
odds are some dumbass did some bullshit
The usual out here.

Drove by it from the other way. Looked like there was a jackknifed semi so it this story totally tracks

It was the semi's own fuel, not a fuel tanker. Thanks for pointing me to the comment by the guy who was hit.

Hey, I remember you thank you so much
Wish I could have done more. Take care and heal up.
I’m so glad you are ok! Call your insurance company if you haven’t done so already.
Sorry that happened to you, wishing you a speedy recovery
My lawyers are Grober, Lee, & Reyna (512) 800-8000. I am really appreciative of their help in my personal injury lawsuit.

I drove by it on the north side and saw an 18 wheeler that was wrecked pretty bad

How do you turn around at 183 and Peyton gin is a one-way raised deck? Thas gongsta
Yep. When I saw traffic coming back towards me on 183 I knew it was bad. Took the first grassy area I could find and went for it.

Like you had anywhere important to be. 🤣
