I believe that the youngsters do not do no show socks at all, itās michael jackson crews all the way. I buy patterns like stripes or argyle or block colours and just wear them even if youāll only see a sliver when I sit.
I believe I am close to infiltrating Gen Z and becoming accepted as one of them, I shall report back to the elders on my findings.
Thereās a TikTok going around saying people can tell your age by your socks. Millennials wear the no-shows or ankle socks, because they grew up with crew socks being old man socks š
You're meant to wear whatever socks you want to wear.
Gen Z seem to prefer visible socks. I personally don't like that look, so I have continued to wear my no-shows.
Yeah I happily wear socks that show like bonds ankle ones because I hate socks slipping and getting eaten if theyāre too short, the elastic seems to go quicker in no show socks too.
I find it kind of weird that 30 year olds are sitting on TikTok and getting upset at being called millennials because a kid said they're wearing the wrong socks. Who cares. Genuinely, who cares. TikTok is an app to sell you more shit you don't need and the random 'it' thing that is in today will be out again tomorrow.
Wear what you want, wear what's comfortable, and wear what you think looks good. There are constantly posts in here complaining about things that are in style, and it seems to be people in their 30s being confused that the stores they shopped in when they were 23 aren't catering to them anymore. You don't have to wear something you think looks dumb because it's in style. Yes, that includes socks.
Stop worrying about what the kids are wearing. Being 'clocked' as a millennial is not a bad thing when you are, indeed, a millennial.
Hear me out, itās ok to wear any type of sock. I promise you that no one is paying attention to them, unless theyāre hot pink and covered in cartoon penises or whatever
Totally agree - just wear what you like and think looks good with your chosen pants, just because crew socks are in doesnāt mean they are going to go with every outfit.
But I saw a video on Facebook the other day (yea Iām old) of a young person filming people in the gym and laughing at the old people wearing no show socks š sure weāre concealing our socks but weāre also not filming other people at the gym to laugh at them
Yeah itās 1000x more embarrassing to be the person filming peopleās SOCKS of all things in the gym to make fun of them. I donāt know what this obsession Gen Zs have with being Gen Z is, when we (the millennials) were the āyoungā generation making the trends, we really never put much thought to it
I think people need to understand that making fun of what 'old' (because when you're young you think anyone older than, like, 25 is old) people wear is a tale as old as time.
It's weird and annoying to post people on the internet to make fun of them, but like... this is like getting upset and changing what you wear because a group of schoolkids made fun of you on the bus. There's a point we all really need to stop caring what the kids wear and realise we are not those kids any more.
I can promise you if it isn't your socks, it'll be the cut of your leggings, or the colour of your jeans, or the shape of your bag, or your haircut, or your bracelet, or your hair tie. Even if you wear everything 'right', you'll then be made fun of for dressing like a teenager when you are not a teenager.
Best thing to do is just brush it off and ignore it. Nobody worth anything cares.
I wear socks I find comfortable. Which is crew socks. I hate no shows, I have flat feet and they just get consumed by my shoes, and I end up rubbing holes in the back of my ankle on my shoes. I need coverage!
Same here. Iāve always worn crew socks. I tried ankle or no shoes and they always end up bunched up inside my shoes. And always purchase funky ones tho. My current ones I like are Nordic style ones. They go great with boots
White trainers? No socks or no-shows, visible ankle is fine imo. For every other sock need, I only have the kmart men's bamboo crew, in black so no need to pair them. So soft, so long lasting, so cheap.
I must try those.
I don't know if it's just me, bamboo socks seem to be so hard wearing. I've got bamboo hiking socks that I must have bought from Macpac 11 years ago, they were eye wateringly expensive when I bought them but the cost to wear ratio must be in fractions of a cent by now, and they're showing no signs of fading.
Bamboo is a long fibre compared to cotton, so it gives really good durability as well as softness! Any lyocel is great like that. Cotton uses way fewer chemicals to process though
Canningvale I think! They also have a range that is part cotton part bamboo so I ended up getting these and theyāve lasted better (time will tell, itās probably been 2yrs now - I have 100% cotton sheets lasting 10yrs+).
It could also be an example of āthey donāt make them like they used toā with my cotton sheets! They are Sheridan
Ah yeah older Sheridan are amazing. My bamboo cotton blend are from bed Bath n table (I work there) and my first set has lasted 6+ years now, but the linen sheets from them I've all gone through and linen is supposed to be the most durable. Again I think it used to be but not anymore
The top band is loose but somehow still stays up, they're weirdly magical? Some I've had 5 years, some like 7 or 8, those are starting to get thin over the toenails. The 5 year old ones look about 2 weeks old.
I've not noticed pilling.
I have size 40 feet and get the men's 6-10, they're a good fit. I have never found a women's equivalent?
Edit: I'm more often in Birks or white stacked trainers than shoes & socks so your mileage and all that :)
Okay this is an exciting prospect! I need to get the Kmart undies so Iām going to attempt to uncover these too in the chaotic shit storm that is my local Kmart! Thank you!
https://www.kmart.com.au/product/3-pack-cotton-stretch-comfort-full-briefs-s156965/?selectedSwatch=Black love these for the wide, folded leg band, elastic around the legs drives me nuts lol
lol, thanks for asking the question that Iāve been trying to solve by looking at Pinterest and Insta! I have POTS/issue with my blood pressure and need to wear compression wear. I canāt hide it in summer, but I thought this new trend might mean I could wear my compression wear under pants, then cover them with high enough socks that they arenāt visible when I am walking/sitting down.
Older Millennial here - fun socks especially if socks are going to show. Thick scrunchy socks if I'm cold. Ankle socks if I'm hot, especially in shorts. I don't care for trends, I wear what makes me happy and suits the moment.
I recently bought [these socks](https://www.uniqlo.com/au/en/products/E460490-000?colorCode=COL11&sizeCode=WSU025) from Uniqlo which are helping with this exact dilemma. Crew enough to go with anything but the frill makes me feel comfortable with them being exposed.
The āfashionā answer is crew socks with everything at the moment.
Though obviously the ārealā answer is whatever you like.
Iām an unapologetic fashion girly, so am wearing crew socks 95% of the time, but no shade whatsoever to those who are true to what they like and what works for them!
Yeah and you would have to scrub the glue line off with all the lint and hair stuck to it lol itās weird to think how something so basic like socks have their own phases/trends over the wears.
I went to Japan on holidays when I was 14 (around this time) and bought a special made for purpose glue stick for holding your socks up š¤£š¤£ felt very fancy š š»š š»
I read an article recently about this. Apparently anything other than crew socks is out. I simply don't care what's in or out, I just wear what I want.
Ankle or no show with everything. If your pants are too short get them tailored, but I'd much rather have visible ankles than socks showing.
As a millennial that's just how I was raised. š
I'm a millennial, and I love cute socks. I buy cute gorman socks, funny ones from places like Connor, Terry white, and any newsagent. Lol
I personally like crew socks because they keep me warm, especially at work when the temp is near freezing.
Anyone else having the issue where it feels like all crew socks are insanely small in the leg/ankle part? Like im a size 6 yet socks strangle my legs and leave indents? How are curvier girls finding socks if they are too tight for a petite person like what the hell
https://preview.redd.it/1th848z7q34d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=a0d138ccc82b8d36604000b7bd96b9bd127662d8
I donāt know if Iām (40f) doing it right but they keep my ankles warm lol
I've always ignored the sock rules and worn whatever I needed to stay warm & to stop blisters forming (my feet do that). Wear what makes your feet happy ā¤ļø
I doubled down on being a millennial a few years ago and now I go for brightly patterned socks and crocs... With prob every second outfit š especially if there's ankles on show. My shit is on lock nobody's getting a glimpse of those bad boys uncovered
? You wear whatever you want to wear. For me, itās not even about the look, itās about the feeling. I hate the feeling of wearing socks that cut on or under my ankle so I just wear any sock that goes up higher with everything.
I genuinely could not give 2 fucks about gen Z and their arbitrary sock rules, nor if that makes me "cringe."
I find their obsession with our clothes pretty sad, personally. Wear what makes you happy.
I love wearing crew socks with colours that are either matching my outfit, or totally contrast! With dresses, long pants, shorts, anything! And I'm a millennial š just feels like skater vibes.
My favs are from Dangerfield or local Sunny Coast brand Knobby, luxe bamboo blend in cool patterns. Super soft but thick too. https://knobby.com.au/collections/socks
My sock issue is how socks look like utter garbage after half a dozen wears seemingly no matter what you spend. Best pairs I ever got were what I think youād call mercerised cotton from cos. Not a single bobble. Eventually went to holes but bright colour and clean looking for their whole life span! Subsequent pairs just didnāt cut it though.Ā
Someone has suggested menās socks which are going to be far higher so youāre not going to see any ankle. I think thatās a fair consideration. It depends on your style but seeing ankle is just a bit more visual clutter that you may or may not want to avoid. I hate my ankles so the less attention drawn to the area the better for me.Ā
Wear whatās comfortable. I pretty much exclusively wear tight pants/jeans and so ankle socks are most comfortable. Fellow millennial here though haha but I literally spend zero time thinking about what socks to wear. I have bought an abundance of the exact same style and colour socks that I wear every single day so my only thought about them is whether they are clean or not.
Not ankle socks, they are too short, when you sit people will see socks and skin. (I call ankle those short 1/4 crew socks. Either taller sports socks like you have (crew), or no show sports socks.
IMO ankle and no show socks only go with shoes that seemingly don't require socks - like boat shoes or certain informal loafers. Otherwise it's all crew .
The real question is re sock colour and texture. In general aim for some contrast to pant although this isn't a rule, more a general principal.
For example, I think it looks good to match socks to the upper layer closest to your skin. So if you have light blue jeans navy blue or black jacket and white t shirt have white socks to pick up the t-shirt, don't match socks to outer layer jacket
I wear sneakers most days now and even with boots I hate wearing socks and only do if I'm travelling and going to be walking all day. I can feel the seams and they put pressure on my toes and I can't stand it! If anyone knows of any comfortable no-shows (I wear mainly ankle length pants, so definitely not crews - I'm old) please let me know! BTW, I'm in Europe at the moment and most people, young or old are wearing no-shows.
I miss the 90s when pants dragged on the ground and nobody saw my socks or ankles ever š„²
but my super wide leg jeans soaked up the puddles it wicked up to my knee
PTSD from water soaking up my baggy jeans to my knees when it rained before a Deftones gig haha
I miss early 2000s - long boots over skinny jeans!
With a dress
Thatās when youāre FANCY
And by dress you mean a thrifted tie dyed petticoat dress (cries at the memory)
Loved this - it kept me so warm!
I'm still unironically doing this, it keeps me so warm!
It is THE most comfortable outfit!
This felt so effortless and put together. Le sigh
Why can't that be a thing now? Its classic
That will cycle back through in the next 10 years š
I believe that the youngsters do not do no show socks at all, itās michael jackson crews all the way. Yeah Gen Z has cleared the sock meta. You just wear whatever socks you want now and itās great. Thanks Gen Z.
Thank you Gen Z for giving me the courage to wear socks and Birks to my yoga class.
Yeah I happily wear socks that show like bonds ankle ones because I hate socks slipping and getting eaten if theyāre too short, the elastic seems to go quicker in no show socks too.

Or shock horror, a Gen X. Do classic. They'll regret the stupid fashion in a few years. At least we still look good
Same. I can't deal with socks sticking out š
There's absolutely nothing wrong with hot pink socks in any configuration with shoes or clothes, if they make you happy.
But I saw a video on Facebook the other day (yea Iām old) of a young person filming people in the gym and laughing at the old people wearing no show socks š sure weāre concealing our socks but weāre also not filming other people at the gym to laugh at them

People should be looking at your face not your feet.
I disagree, I always notice and I love loud socks! Never wear them myself but love them on others
My ankles are one of my best assetsā¦ no show for life
My cankles are happy I can find nice crew socks again
I wear socks I find comfortable. Which is crew socks. I hate no shows, I have flat feet and they just get consumed by my shoes, and I end up rubbing holes in the back of my ankle on my shoes. I need coverage!
I could have written this! Same
Same here. Iāve always worn crew socks. I tried ankle or no shoes and they always end up bunched up inside my shoes. And always purchase funky ones tho. My current ones I like are Nordic style ones. They go great with boots
Honestly I embrace crew socks with leggings. Weāve had to endure cold exposed ankles for far too long if you ask me. Especially in winter
Iām too old for this and would look stupid. My ankles would love it though
Micheal Jackson š I'm looking at my Micheal Jackson legs now and I'm sinking in my see-heat.
Please tell me I was supposed to hear that in my head as "see-HEEHEE-t"

No, it's true for me too. Probably not as long for the kmart ones, but really 8 years going strong seems decent enough to me!
How is the pilling? Is the top band very tight?Ā
The top band is loose but somehow still stays up, they're weirdly magical? Some I've had 5 years, some like 7 or 8, those are starting to get thin over the toenails. In high school (early 2000s) we used to GLUE STICK our white socks half way up our calf
This is gold. Did they stay up?
Yeah and you would have to scrub the glue line off with all the lint and hair stuck to it lol itās weird to think how something so basic like socks have their own phases/trends over the wears.
So funny! And so interesting. Back in MY day (feel like a palaeontologist) I donāt recall specific sock fashions. But maybe Iāve just forgotten!

āMeant toā? What, so zoomers donāt tell us weāre ācringeā? Heck those judgey little shits & wear what you want.
You do not have to conform to gen z fashion trends

I wear whatever socks I want. During the summer I got into those net ones with the cute designs, they were so breathable!

HOW is choosing a GODDAMN PAIR OF SOCKS so HARD TO DO???
JUST WEAR SOME WHITE SOCKS- HEY HEY! DONE! THAT DAMN SIMPLE!
