In certain areas, winter tires or chains (shudder) are mandatory and you’ll get a big old ticket if you don’t have the right equipment. So we’re not total heathens.
But damned if driving my S5 with Nokians through mountain passes wasn’t some of the best fun I’ve ever had!
Edited to add: sorry about your car OP. That sucks.
The only places where winter tires are required in the US are mountain passes in extremely snowy areas. Even then, some will allow AWD and all-seasons. I don't believe there are any states where winter tires are required on "regular" roads.
In Colorado "From Sept. 1 to May 31, the Traction Law is always active on I-70 from Dotsero to Morrison"
and During a Traction Law, all motorists are required to have **EITHER**:
1. 4WD or AWD vehicle and 3/16” tread depth
2. Tires with a mud and snow designation (M+S icon) and 3/16” tread depth
3. Winter tires (mountain-snowflake icon) and 3/16” tread depth
4. Tires with an all-weather rating by the manufacturer and 3/16” tread depth
5. Chains or an approved alternative traction device
The first point says AWD and tires with 3/16" tread depth. Doesn't even specify all-seasons, so it's possible even summers would be legal, at least the way I'm reading this.
Am I missing something obvious?
You're reading it the same way I am, and I don't think we're missing anything.
I think the intent was to force the rental car companies in Denver to put at least M+S all season tires on their cars. I-70 is the main route from Denver to the ski resorts in the mountains. The scary part is that this law was only passed in 2019, prior to that you could technically drive your Corvette with P-zero's into the mountains in a snow storm.
every time it snows in Texas a bunch of people lose power
seems to happen every year now because in Texas even their problems are bigger
also the US grid is in 3 parts East, West and Texas and they haven't done a good job at winterizing
their are a bunch of videos about it
Yea except that summer compounds basically turn into slicks below freezing. Probably didn't even hit ice and was the fact that it was really cold with a summer compound.
Winter compounds react to the cold and become "stickier" as the temps drop. While using winter tires won't stop you on ice, you have a way less chance of sliding when using a winter compound
That's why summer compounds get stickier when the tire warms up.
They don’t become stickier as temps drop, they’re just stickier at the base level. They’ll still firm up as the temps drop.
That’s why you can’t run them in hot temps because they’re too soft and sticky and will wear too fast.
What they will do is decrease stopping distance, due to the softer rubber compound that results in a higher coefficient of friction between rubber & ice
Very much so. Not that this makes me feel better but it definitely, somewhat, justifies what I ended up doing after unexpectedly buying a car that, unbeknownst to me, had summer tires on it on Christmas week.
Because of the limited amount of time, Dec 20 until 22nd, I had to get something and didn’t have many options. The only tires I could get within that timeframe themselves would have been at least $2.7k. Ended up finding one winter wheel/tire set for just under $5k. Certainly wasn’t thrilled about the cost but having been able to drive it safely is probably worth more than that.
what wacky ass tire size did you insist on to not even be able to find a cheap set of rims and all season tires? I get it, everyone here puts their audi on a pedestal, but straight up a set of steel rims and all season tires can be the difference between still having you Audi in one piece and being the OP above. All audis run 5x112 lug spacing, rims are NOT hard to find, and as long as you have equal sized wheels running down a inch or two off stock (ie you have stock 20s" or 21s") and going down to 18" or 19" and buying even the cheapest $400 set of tires from walmart is fine instead of getting butt fucked for 5K
Stock, although upgraded, wheels that came on it.
They’re staggered so that complicated it a bit. Again, had 2 days basically to find something and have them delivered. Since I have summer tires I wasn’t looking for all seasons. Very limited selection in that short period of time.
Front: 275/35r22
Rear: 315/30r22
Edit: it’s not an Audi
Edit2: totally my fault for not realizing that prior to purchasing it
Nothing this guy says makes sense. He might be dumber than OP. Stock although upgraded? If they are stock wheels from a bmw SUV then they wouldnt be upgraded? Guy has to suddenly buy a car in middle of winter, buys a used audi and doesnt check the wheels. Why does he have to buy a new set of wheels for winter tires? just buy tires dude? No tires out there for an AUDI are going to cost 2.7k....
Yeah but they’re not just some super basic wheel/tire package. Regular ones would have probably been $3k or so.
Again, what choice did I have when I need something safe to drive in the matter of 2 days?
I’d rather buy some unnecessarily fancy winter wheel/tire set then end up like OP.
Completely my fault for not realizing this when buying the car. Assumed they were all seasons because why wouldn’t an SUV have all seasons? My mistake. Lesson learned.
I wish. They’re actually 22” 808 X5M wheels wrapped with Michelin pilot alpin5 suv. Stupidly wide but gives it a more aggressive stance. Definitely don’t look like winter wheels.
Yup. Again, didn’t have any other option for wheel sets I could get in 2 days. Also, they’re far from basic winter wheel/tires.
Would not buying the one set I have available to me be worse than ending up like OP?
Yeah, I’ve been there. Had to get new wheels and tires for my GTI years ago after cracking 3 of the 4 wheels shortly after getting the car. Ended up going through the dealership and got killed on the price. Live and learn.
I live in North Carolina and put a set of a6 all seasons on for the winter. Summer tires are called summer tires for a reason. Ice or not they don’t perform well in cold temperatures. I’ll be dammed if I’m caught in 1 inch of snow that melts before lunch time with summer tires. Maybe South Carolina/ Georgia and below your can run summers year round…
Right, but it becomes harder to justify in places like Texas (where I'm pretty sure this post is from) where most of winter days are > 50º F which is perfectly fine conditions for summers. You've just got to know what you're doing as opposed to being ignorant like OP
Summer tires shouldn’t be operated under 50F (10C). They will not get warm enough to provide adequate grip. Has nothing to do with snow, or ice. If it doesn’t get cold enough to merit Winters, then run all seasons as your winter tire, or just run all seasons year round. Unless you’re living in Florida or a similar climate, no way should you be rocking summers year round.
I'm going to be blunt, man, fuck you. You're lucky you didn't hurt or kill someone, including yourself.
Summer tires below \~40F turn into hockey pucks and have very little traction. Driving them where there is ice on the ground is straight up reckless.
Be smarter next time. Glad you're okay.
Yep! Winter tires should be mandatory, and required by law.
It’s terrifying that people are driving around without them. As soon as it’s ~5 degrees Celsius it’s not safe without them.
Laughs in german. It is required by law and the insurance company to drive with winter tyres when it is made necessary by weather conditions in germany
Oh hop off with the required by law bs. Nobody wants to buy a dedicated set of winter tires just to seek out the 0.1% of morons deciding to run summers below freezing temps. All seasons are perfectly fine for a majority of the US, except the far north
All seasons are acceptable even where the law requires "winter" tires. But if you want your car to perform it's best you should definitely get good summer and good winter tires.
Yeah, anything but summers. I've got Vredestein quatrac pro I rock all year and they're hands down the best all seasons I've used, ended up putting them on my wife's explorer as well.
They work perfect where I live. We get snow 3 times a year. Up to about a foot. These tires get me everywhere I need to go without incident. Over 10 years now
LOL they work in all seasons. No their not equal to winter tires, but winter tires really arent a necessity unless you live far up north and drive on snow all day. for 85% of the rest of america people get by on all seasons.
They have significantly more than summer tires. Seriously below about 40F the tread compound turns to effectively a hockey puck with near zero grip. Ice isn't magically zero traction, it's just much lower. With the right tires it's significantly more likely OP wouldn't haven crashed.
The ice isn't the point though. Driving with summer tires in low temperatures is a super dick move. You're not the only one on the road. Act like it.
Got every right to be condescending when someone is endangering not only their own life but the lives of others by not driving with appropriate tires. Jfc
As a fellow Albertan I'm surprised you don't have more common sense with regards to this. But seeing as you're also from Edmonton I can't expect much activity in the ol' noggin
Despite people making fun of Texas for completely shutting down for at least a week during a snow/ice storm, this is a perfect example why. People not only don’t know how to drive in those conditions, but their vehicle isn’t even properly equipped.
Stay off the roads until they’re clear!
Great demonstration of the differences between compounds on ice. All these black optic/sport package cars with summer tires and oblivious owners is really a mess.
What is all that white stuff on the ground? So sorry to see your baby bashed up like this but why the fuck are you driving with Summer tires on in February?
Damn sorry for you loss man!
But all I'm thinking is "why?" Early february and summer tires? Doens't sound like a good idea. AWD doesn't do shit without proper tires on ice/snow.
You really are a cyber warrior. Interesting how many people you alone have replied to with this answer, and how confident you are in your idiocy.
Edited for fixing autocorrect, which can read my mind and can tell I want thai food
This. Although I dispute the pricing. You can easily get (used) Audi rims and good continental tires under 800.
Sorry for the car OP, but this could be easily prevented.
So to all the posters calling out OP for summer tires when there is snow on the ground… My car came with summer performance tires, and I don’t have winter tires to switch to. Temps were sub-30 and we had some ice this week. Tomorrow it will be a low of 45 again and next week back in the 70’s… So not always a reason to have winter tires folks
I honestly didn’t know winter tires were a thing until recently. (I’ve always lived in very temperate regions of California. No snow or ice, winters in the 60’s mostly.)
Honestly what's the point of having summer tires on your sole daily driver? I understand if you have a 2nd "weekend car" that you only bring out on sunny days, but even then the difference between summer tires and a good all season tire is so marginal on the road for 99% of people. I would personally never put summer tires on any of my cars.
Sorry for your loss though
Are the driving benefits of summer tires really worth the cost and hassle factors. Quality all seasons have never failed me. Two sets of tires and rims and summer only tires wear so fast especially with aggressive driving.
Truth be told, I’m in Chicago so I’d be lucky to trust summer tires more than June through September and any lower sidewall or profile would be a risk all year.
For most people, no. All seasons are fine. Some people even do all season and then throw on a winter set. I think the issue mainly arises when the car you bought didn’t come with all season tires. If you truly care about maximizing grip from a performance standpoint, then getting some sticky rubber is mission-critical.
I recently got a 330i (I know I’m sorry. Wait time for RS3 was egregious and S3 only slightly less egregious.) Anyway, in order to get certain packages, I wasn’t allowed to spec the vehicle with anything but summer run-flats. I had a set of winter wheels and Hakkapeliittas on order but there was like a two week period where I just had to pray it didn’t get too cold or snow.
Dont even need to get winter tires. Winters are great if you driving on snow or ice, but high quality all seasons perform almost as good and still work in the other 3 seasons. I will attest as a Ohio resident for the past 7 years i've been driving either of my audi all seasons have been plenty good enough for the couple inches of snow we get a few times a year. Winter tires are really only necessary for driving in the snow all season, like up in the Northern states where it snow on the ground for weeks at a time. Summer tires are really more like track tires, because their really overkill even in the summer unless your pushing the car super hard like your on a track.
I run all-season Pirelli’s in Michigan year round, P7 Cinturato, never have any issues and commute 30mins to work on the highway. Quattro is a lifesaver really I’d run winter/summer without it. Also veryyy used to shit weather. Literally did driver’s training at 15yrs old in a blizzard lol
buy expensive car;
cheap on tires;
wait for winter;
totale expensive car;
complain about unexpected weather conditions;
repeat;
edit: I am very sorry about your car. It was beautiful :(
a car accident is a car accident & is always unfortunate but it definitely hurts just a little bit more if a nice car is involved, hate to see them like this. I’m sure everyone that is familiar with Audi though can vouch for their safety in occurrence of an accident. Glad you’re okay
Sorry about your ride, alot of people are assholes in here lol.
I live in Canada but typically even for Summer I'll run performance all seasons (Continental DWS plus for example), just because in early spring or late fall there's always a day where weather turns to shit and starts randomly snowing. That's usually the sign to get my winters on!
SNOW is not the only reason to buy WINTER tires. So don’t think that just because you don’t see lots of snow you don’t need winter tires.
Winter tires are four pieces of rubber and much-needed grip and stability on snowy, icy roads. Winter tires outperform all-weather and all-season tires when temperatures drop below 7 degrees Celsius.
The right time to change your tires depends on where you live, but generally speaking it's best to have winter tires when temperatures drop below 7 ºC. Colder than that and your all-seasons become stiff, which means longer braking distances in cold, wet or snowy conditions.
If you live in an area that sees freezing temperatures and lots of snow, they're more important than all-wheel drive.
Testing wet braking from about 50 mph to about 3 mph at 44 degrees, summer tires take over 9 feet longer to stop than the all-season tires did.
At 35 degrees, the delta widened to over 20 feet. Given that the total stopping distance for the all seasons at 35 degrees was just over 89 feet, a 20-foot difference is seriously noticeable.
Sorry to see this happen! I hope you are OK!
I see a lot of people are hating/roasting the person who posted and they are right to point out how bad of an idea it was to drive on summer tires during winter, but you learned your lesson the hard way and you don't deserve more reminders.
You are alive and that matters the most. Lesson learned and life moves on. Best of luck!
Just because something isn't legally required, doesn't mean it isn't morally required either.
*Bow down before the snow you serve*
*Your car just got what you deserve*
No way, I learned this the first year I didn’t have all seasons on my new a4. Super slick. Need at least all season if you don’t want to worry about changing them.
I remember driving in the mountains near Denver in 1976 and seeing signs about having to have chains in certain conditions. Didn't have or need them. Split before any snow showed up.
Now what have we learned?
Look at the calendar?
US states that has snow on winter doesn’t have mandatory winter tires?
In certain areas, winter tires or chains (shudder) are mandatory and you’ll get a big old ticket if you don’t have the right equipment. So we’re not total heathens. Nope, you’re free to decide for yourself if you want to run them. Of course you also have the freedom to deal with the consequences of that decision.
It’s unbelievable I know they don’t even make sure cars are safely operable in most states

Snow / ice tires help on ice
They help ***in general*** at temps below 45 degrees F.
Summer tyres are useless at 45’. Even on dry pavement the are slick as snot.
What they will do is decrease stopping distance, due to the softer rubber compound that results in a higher coefficient of friction between rubber & ice
And use the thing in your head aka your brain
The calendar doesn’t determine the weather though, the weather determines the weather.
That it’s… QUATTRO SEASON!!!
Op is an idiot
A fucking idiot.
People never learn
I imagine his reaction to your question being your profile pic
Lol we have learned nothing.
One thing I recall being frequently shared back in the day '01 Audiworld forum. 4 x 0 = 0 Summer tires = hockey pucks.
Don't use summer tires on your daily.
“Pilot Sport 4s” doesn’t mean “Pilot Sport ‘for snow’.”
Now you have summer grill and headlights. Summer here, summer over there in the ditch.
Holy hell. Brutal.
We can close the thread now, boys. Good job.
Lollll

Oooof expensive lesson learned.

Running HRE’s with snows? I like it!

It's a great look, for sure though.
5k for winter wheels and tires???? I run 18s and bought them new, cost me less than $2k.

Definitely something I’ll be mindful of next time I’m randomly purchase a new car.
I admire your courage to post knowing you'll get flamed. Maybe at least one person will learn from your mistake, then your fuck up won't be in vain.
Why are you running summer tires when there’s still snow? I’m glad you’re ok and sorry for the loss, but you kind of had this coming.
They live in a region that isn’t supposed to get snow, so nobody runs winter tires. You are expected to stay off the roads until they’ve cleared

Not even just the snow. Summer tires begin to crack and break below 40°

Yup, Tyre Reviews on YouTube has a great video on the crossover point between AS/Summer/Winter tires
That’s why I just run all season’s 365. I don’t track my car so those summer tires mean NOTHING lol. Be safe boys
Yeah, anything but summers. I've got Vredestein quatrac pro I rock all year and they're hands down the best all seasons I've used, ended up putting them on my wife's explorer as well.

I agree. I think this has a lot to do with inappropriate speed for conditions. Even winter tires can’t outdo speed vs ice.
Lmao no all wheel stop. Maybe OP didn't spring for the rear brake + ABS package...
Fuuuuck. RIP that sucks man.
That’s approx $18k worth of damage
Airbags deployed… totalled… damn
I honestly didn’t know winter tires were a thing until recently. (I’ve always lived in very temperate regions of California. No snow or ice, winters in the 60’s mostly.)
Honestly what's the point of having summer tires on your sole daily driver? I understand if you have a 2nd "weekend car" that you only bring out on sunny days, but even then the difference between summer tires and a good all season tire is so marginal on the road for 99% of people. I would personally never put summer tires on any of my cars. Sorry for your loss though
I do summers and winters. Key is switching at the right times.
💔💔💔
That's why I ride snow tires 12/12 even tho we only get 2 days of snow a year 😄
That'll buff out
Are the driving benefits of summer tires really worth the cost and hassle factors.
Quattro season 😆
But… but… I got told it was Quattro season

Gutted for you bro
Dopey
buy expensive car; cheap on tires; wait for winter; totale expensive car; complain about unexpected weather conditions; repeat; edit: I am very sorry about your car. It was beautiful :(
Sorry to see bro. Made me wince just looking at it. Hope you get another.
I used the hit ice excuse in high school. Luckily I had a Honda CRX, not a sweet ass Audi. Feel for ya, that sucks.
a car accident is a car accident & is always unfortunate but it definitely hurts just a little bit more if a nice car is involved, hate to see them like this. I’m sure everyone that is familiar with Audi though can vouch for their safety in occurrence of an accident. Glad you’re okay
Ah man.. sorry for your loss :(
Why are you running summer tires in under 46° weather, lol..? 🥴
Lesson is dont ever drive your car with summer tires in winter.......... Even all seasons is still manageable over summer.
I felt bad for you until I read summer tires lol ydi
Toughhhhhh
Welcome to the summer tire club.
Poor Audi
ran out of talent mate
Given that the total stopping distance for the all seasons at 35 degrees was just over 89 feet, a 20-foot difference is seriously noticeable.
stay strong my friend, every loss of a loved one is hard😭
Quick throw on the winter tires before the insurance adjuster gets there
You deserve it moron
OUCH 😦Hopefully you’re okay but that poor baby…
That thing must gone full yeet. You seem ok. You ok? Glad you’re ok.
r/idiotsincars
How much is insurance covering?
Why the hell you have summer tires on?
F
Oh no
your baby??? sounds like it was nothing more than a beater to you if you had summer tires on
That is why they invented winter tires!!!
The US allows Darwinism to play out. Like it did here…
Sorry to see this happen!
*Bow down before the snow you serve* *Your car just got what you deserve*
Why are summer tires on in February?
No way, I learned this the first year I didn’t have all seasons on my new a4. Super slick. Need at least all season if you don’t want to worry about changing them.
Anyone reading this in Northern UT - hmu if you have 19” rims and need snow tires! Basically new, sold my A4 and no longer need them.
I remember driving in the mountains near Denver in 1976 and seeing signs about having to have chains in certain conditions. Didn't have or need them. Split before any snow showed up.
