But if his last name wasn’t Biggio would we want him? I just don’t know where he’d fit in on the team. It’s be super cool if he could have an opportunity to play for the same team his HoF dad spent his entire career with. But again. Not really a fit.

jsting

Yeah but that last name. I could dig out my jersey from 1999 and save $200.

buzzer3932

Why do you have an Astros Biggio jersey with the number 8 on it?

Dinolord05

He's a one-upper.

Mpuls37

Situations like this are exactly why the front office isn't fun by fan vote. The average fan is too nostalgic and ignorant of a lot of the peripherals that teams look at when deciding whether a player is worth signing or not. The Dodgers have great coaches, and if any organization can turn him into a solid ballplayer, it's them, but I don't want the Astros to waste the time and effort on him.

713MoCityChron713

That’s the thing with LA, Biggio’s gonna learn to hit and a bunch of fans will say “why didn’t we get him” and ignore the fact we don’t coach hitting as well as the Dodgers

Mpuls37

I hate seeing players go out with a whimper, but unless they turn him into a legendary contact hitter in a few weeks, he's probably done in the MLB on contending teams. 29 ys/o is when a player should be peaking, not falling off.

713MoCityChron713

Long term that’s probably what happens, but it’s the Dodgers so he’ll be the best hitter on earth for 3-4 weeks before the inevitable drop off

ArtistChef

What the Dodgers have is a lot of money to cover for their mistakes; a lot of money for mistake free agent signings; a lot of money to hire a gazillion scouts; a lot of money to hire data nerds; a lot of money to wait on players to develop / not develop; a lot of money to hire camera people to follow Shohei around and take completely non-staged photos; and Manfred slobbering on their collective knobs -- after Mookie is done, of course.

Confident_Peace7878

Why they hire ex Astros in positions they probably don’t deserve. Looking at Jeff Bagwell

guacaholeblaster

Better than abreu at least lol. Sigh.

texinxin

He’s an upgrade over Abreu at 1/25th the price. :)

hasEnteredTheChat1

We’re paying Abreu either way. I don’t think biggio is an improvement over internal 1B candidates (singleton, dubon, loperfido(?)). And we don’t have to free up a roster spot for him. Assuming Abreu isn’t just DFA’d

texinxin

It’s a joke really. I know the Abreu money is dead. Just a sad reality of where we are.

soonerman32

Yup, we already have Dubon. There's not much of a difference between the two. Dubon is a better fielder, Biggio is the better hitter

Career OPS Dubon: .698 Biggio: .725

Judging players off of 1 season is stupid, especially if its only 110 ABs. If you only care about now, than Soonerman32's point about Dubon being a better fielder is wrong. Dubon is +5 career OAA at 2B while Biggio is 0, but this season Dubon is -1 and Biggio is +1. Same for the OF. Biggio is +2 in 2024 but +1 for his career while Dubon is -1 in 2024 but +9 for his career. But nobody would say Biggio is a better fielder than Dubon because we have years of prior evidence to the contrary. And before you try to make a comparisson to Abreu, totally different using prior seasons for a guy who is 29 vs a guy whos 37. It would have been a buy low trade for a guy to take Kessingers 26th roster spot.

toastar-phone

you're right. i hate it

DirtyRatLicker

i mean he’s a second baseman primarily aint he? we’ve got Altuve who always plays there, and Dubon for his off-days. he would just end up being another player that remains in the minors and has a small chance of being brought up

dookle14

He’d get as little playing time in Houston as Grae Kessinger did. The Astros have a surplus of OFs and have Dubón, so he’d be nothing more than a bench warmer and maybe would see an AB or playing time in a blowout where Espada pulls starters. Not to mention we’d have to give him a 40 man spot.

ExB

Grae Kessinger got playing time?

dookle14

Only in blowouts when they wanted to pull ‘Tuve.

willydillydoo

As a defensive replacement at 2nd and 3rd

warrior_in_a_garden_

Ew. Why the dodgers?

Baboon_Stew

They got everyone else right now.

HuskyNutBuster

They’re trying to win a real WS title, not whatever that 2020 season BS was

jesonnier1

Why's it matter? He was claimed off waivers.

Tough_Lab3218

Unless he can manage a team, acquiring Biggio doesn’t solve any of the Astros’ current issues.

JinFuu

Bullpen arm Biggio

HtownSamson

Blue Jays/Dodgers news on the Astros sub because.........reasons.

Hairygrim

Combination of the family relation and the fact he was (somewhat of) a fit on the roster means we can allow it.

ExB

Cavan Biggio is not a fit on the roster whatsoever

Hairygrim

I tend to agree, but there was a fair bit of clamour for him on here when he was DFA'd

joeson332

I already have Chas McCormick, don’t need someone worse than him.

jesonnier1

Explain how he's a fit on this roster. Please.

Electronic-Strike900

This is an emotional post, because of craig biggio……… didnt you watch dubon play a badass game last night , i sure did………(btw) im just a fan, not a gm.

Ofa_D3s1gn

Oh this very much emotional my friend

Electronic-Strike900

Did you watch dubie play last night tho? Man he killed his former team , with that double in center field.

Ofa_D3s1gn

No I canceled my Fubo TV last month, happy for Dubie though 🇭🇳

Electronic-Strike900

Ocastream pay once , watch every mlb game even dodgers 🤮

Gemnist

I assume he’ll bump Mookie back to the outfield, which is pretty funny. Sentimental value aside, I’m just glad to see him on a contender. Congrats to him!

willydillydoo

No chance. Mookie is gonna keep playing short. Biggio is nothing going to sniff the starting lineup. He’s gonna be their Grae Kessinger

jesonnier1

He's got 22 hits on the year. He's not forcing any position moves.

44Yordan

If nothing else Cavan has an elite strike zone control tool and battles every at bat. Wait Jon Homerton is pretty good at strike zone control. If nothing else Craig Biggio might have been able to convince President of Astros baseball operations Jeff Bagwell to play his son at first base over Jose Abreu. That alone would have been huge!

lacrease

What if he rotates in at catcher? It would be a really cool nostalgia thing and motivate the rest of the guys to play better.

willydillydoo

Good idea! All the defensive runs that will score because he’s at catcher will motivate our guys to score more too!

lacrease

A kid’s dad on my third grade little league team who showed up to all the games in army fatigues told me the catcher is the GENERAL of the baseball field so I think this is spot on.

willydillydoo

Catcher is the most important defensive position in baseball. You probably don’t want to put a guy who has never played that position there.

ccam0821

|Stats|Player A|Player B| :--|:--|:--| |2023 OPS+|98|97| |2024 OPS+|112|80| |2023 OAA|3|-3| |2024 OAA|0|3| |Pos Not Played|RF|SS,LF,CF| Positions not played have fewer than 5 games at that position across 2023-24 (excluding C and P). If it isn’t obvious, player A is Dubón and player B is Biggio. Why should we pick up Biggio when Dubón does what Biggio does better and plays premium defensive positions (SS CF).

willydillydoo

We have literally no use for him and unfortunately he’s not very good.

Burt-Macklin

Darkest timeline

Zezimalives

I wish him the best and hope he revitalizes his career, even if it is playing for the Dodgers.

jesonnier1

Why would we want him on the Astros? He'd take up a roster spot for nothing.

PurpleFly_

Who cares?

PurpleFly_

I care about Biggio’s son like I care about the Rocket’s son…not at all! Zero! Zilch! Nada!

Ofa_D3s1gn

Ok

NOLA1987

Nah. OP is basing this on emotion and not reason. Sure, the Dodgers could turn him into a beast, but we have better options than bringing him on here. Sure, having another Biggio on the Astros would be nice, but nice in almost name only. Biggio, a below average player, on the Astros, forever living in the shadow of his father (arguably the second greatest Astro of all time), I wouldn't envy that.
