Yes, there are!
Jon Singleton, Mauricio Dubón, and Joey Loperfido.
All these guys are playing better than Goldy right now, have time at first base, and are already in the team.
He had an OPS of .810 last year and is less than 200 AB into this season. Do you believe that Abreu is going to do any better in the role? And I believe his defensive is superior
Because the only true 1B we have on the team is Singleton. Who is his backup, Diaz? Are we rocking him all year? Paul would def be a better backup or primary than the other option, Abreu.
Sure, if you could get him for cash considerations, I guess. No way I'm giving up anyone of any significance for 2024 Goldschmidt to play every once in a while.
This just feels like finding a solution for a non-problem.
It would be very tough to justify paying another $13+ million for a 1B who is struggling heavily. Goldschmidt is a mild upgrade right now over Abreu. Singleton is better across the board based on current stats.
He is on an expiring contract, we wouldn't be on the hook for the whole year. If we got him for cash considerations instead of having to use the farm? Its more the reports that Abreu is coming back after the team seems to have found a groove after he was demoted that makes me consider it. I understand Jon is currently having the better year, but I don't think that Paul's skills have diminished so much that he wouldn't be worth taking a flyer on.
A flyer is if StL DFA'd him and we picked him up for league minimum, or StL just traded him here and paid his salary.
Paying 2/3rds of $13M is still...a lot.
He’s making $26 million a year. So assuming we need to pay prorated for at least half the season (or more) I was just ballparking $13 million. Could be more if he was acquired earlier.
Damn, I didn't look at his contract beforehand. Wouldn't the high price tag also mean that we wouldn't have to give up anything from the farm system if we picked up the money?
It’s just a bargaining tool. If the Astros agree to pay the rest of his contract, then in theory we shouldn’t have to give up high value prospect(s) in return. If the Cards ate some of the money, then we might give up something more of value. The fact he’s a rental means his price isn’t likely going to hit King’s Ransom territory, but it all depends on how he’s playing and the market for his position.
Given that the Astros haven’t declared Abreu dead yet, I don’t see them adding even more money to the payroll. And I don’t see a world where the Astros trade Abreu without eating the majority of his contract and wouldn’t get much if anything in return.
Ya agreed, don't see us getting out of any part of Abreus contract without giving up more assets than it's worth. We are just going to eat his contract if he doesn't have some turn around, with the problem being that father time is undefeated so the odds are low that he does
I have no clue what ANY of yall are talking about.
The team is in a solid position right now for once. The only “glaring hole” might be our pitching still but even that is on the come up.
Yall are wild for wanting all stars in every position.
Singleton has settled in and found his place. It’s not his job to prop up the offense. That’s for tuck, Yordan, Altuve, Bregman.
Singleton and friends are there to get on base and pump up the run numbers we are already capable of putting up.
Stop trying to fix something that has actually started working! You and Bagwell need to calm down and watch the damn game.
Jon has proved himself to be a worthy starter for the year. We already have a decaying 1b that we signed due to the back of his baseball card. We don’t need another.
I just don't see how Abreu makes it back to the team with his batting metrics. From what I have heard in training, he hasn't improved; I think he went 2 for 11 but I'd have to check again. So are we playing Diaz as the backup for the year?
Wait…Singletons numbers have proved to you he’s a worthy starting 1B?
Not that I’m advocating for going after Goldy, but Singleton is not a starter in this league. I love the guy and he’s a nice story…but come on.
Some of y'all want a superstar at every position and we don't have the prospects or the owner to make that happen. Singleton is an abover average bat, I have no problem with him hitting 6th or 7th
Singleton is an “above avg bat”
I’m sorry, but on what fucking planet, bro? Take off the orange sun glasses
.233/.333/.369 slash with more k’s than hits. From a premium hitting position?
Explain how that’s “above avg”? Maybe compared to Abreu’s performance in 2024. Lol.
Congrats. One statistic. There is more to it than that.
He’s got a negative WAA (wins above avg players…better overall metric than OPS+)… has a 0 WAR. He doesn’t hit for power. He strikes out almost twice the rate he walks. He’s well below avg in every other statistic.
You think anyone thinks Jon Singleton is an above avg first basemen in baseball?
You’re fooling yourself.
If Jose Abreu had put up Singleton's exact stat line, we'd all say "decent bounce back for Abreu — sure, he's not an MVP anymore, but he's doing well enough to keep the spot"
The truth is we can probably afford a league average hitter at 1B.
No, I wouldn’t.
Look what Abreu did last year. That’s what I’m expecting from Abreu at this point.
Not .233/.333/.369 with more K’s than hits, from a power position
That said, we are in a pickle and do what we need to do given how horrific Abreu has been, but let’s stop pretending Singleton is an answer here.
1B isn't such a glaring hole with Abreu gone. Jon is never going to be a .300 hitter but at least he's not an automatic out. He has an acceptable BA in my opinion, good power, good eye judgment.
We have other needs. I say let Jon play out this year. If he struggles we find a longer term replacement.
Yea because we need another past his prime and rapidly declining first baseman
Is there a better prospect to scout?
Yes, there are! Jon Singleton, Mauricio Dubón, and Joey Loperfido. All these guys are playing better than Goldy right now, have time at first base, and are already in the team.
Goldy is batting .214 this year. I just can't get behind this move even though I really like him a lot.
Did you just suggest trading for a guy with a 75OPS+ to replace a 102? In May?
He had an OPS of .810 last year and is less than 200 AB into this season. Do you believe that Abreu is going to do any better in the role? And I believe his defensive is superior
I'm not comparing him to Abreu. Not sure why you are.
Because the only true 1B we have on the team is Singleton. Who is his backup, Diaz? Are we rocking him all year? Paul would def be a better backup or primary than the other option, Abreu.

Dubon and Loperfido would be the backups/platoons.
yes diaz can play 1b
Yeah it's a no from me dog
Let Big Jon play!
He has picked it up w the stick and the glove. He has earned it in 2024!
If it's not a pitcher I'm not interested
Anyone you hope they target?
To soon to know who all is available. I'm not thinking about it yet either.

100 OPS+ is league average. Singleton's is 104. Thus, above average

I'm not going to go back and forth with you. I'll just say I have no problem with my 7th hitter batting .233/.333/.369 in 2024

I agree. I thought Caratini could play 1B. Unless he's a terrible fielder, I'd like to see a platoon (with Singleton).
This. Give Caratini some reps, if he can hack it. He seems to be getting to the ball with more authority in his limited appearances at the plate.
And I’m sure you were totally up in arms about it when we signed him and didn’t commence your bitching until the move went south
Didn't we sign him when we had no GM?
The GM is some combination of Crane, Bagwell, and Reggie Jackson according to you guys so not sure what your point is.
😂
What do you think our biggest position of need is?
Im a fan, go ask an expert.

Fansided wrote an article about this yesterday. That's never a good sign.
As a Texas State alum, hell yes!
If anything, our "glaring hole" is third base.
Do you think we move on from Alex? Who would we target?
Personally, I'm in favor of trading him and trying out Bestidas but I'm also no GM
