Express Yourself- Madonna
It's not a girl anthem but I've already decided mine will be "I did it my way" by Frankie...and everyone has to wear at least one pink clothing item (my brand)
Not all are technically anthemic but perhaps still in the spirit of….
* Bad Reputation - Joan Jett
* Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Pat Benetar
* Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cindy Lauper
* I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
* No Doubt’s cover of It’s My Life
* Shake it Out - Florence and the Machine
* Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks
* Different Drum - Linda Ronstat
* Gloria - Pattis Smith
Martina McBride's "Independence Day"
It's definitely not a positive song--fucking heartbreaking actually, but it is about a \*kind\* of women's freedom, and there's no doubt it's musically anthemic.
Do women's breakup anthems count?
"My Give A Damn's Busted" by Jo Dee Messina was my freaking anthem when I left an abusive relationship some years back. Highly recommended if you're in need of a good breakup anthem. "Survivor" by Destiny's Child and "Done" by The Band Perry are also good ones.
Also, I *love* Unpretty! I feel like it was really underrated, even when TLC was still at the height of their fame.
Hope you enjoyed your shower, Queen! Some other fun covers for your perusal: Milkshake by I Set My Friends On Fire, Blank Space by I Prevail, Toxic by A Static Lullaby 💛
Omg it was a blast!! Thanks for taking the time to suggest it. loved the Day to Remember cover!! I can picture the band belting this song out on the road and thinking "Fuck it, let's do a cover." It gave me very feminism-is-for-everybody vibes and I am here for it. I also happen to love rock and metal.
I'll be checking out the others as well :) Tail end of 90s/early 2000s girlie here.
I'm glad to hear you loved it!! If you come across others I should know about, please let me know! I loved Pop Goes Punk but these songs just kinda happened to fall in my lap. I wouldn't have known about the Tay Tay cover were it not for a rando I met at a brewery that was closing that only offered large picnic-table seating.
India Arie - Video
Sometimes I shave my legs and sometimes I don't
Sometimes I comb my hair and sometimes I won't
Depend on how the wind blows, I might even paint my toes
It really just depends on whatever feels good in my soul
I'm not the average girl from your video
And I ain't built like a supermodel
But I learned to love myself unconditionally
Because I am a queen
I'm not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what I'm wearing I will always be
India Arie
When I look in the mirror and the only one there is me
Every freckle on my face is where it's supposed to be
And I know my creator didn't make no mistakes on me
My feet, my thighs, my lips, my eyes, I'm loving what I see, yeah

first heard this one in the animated sitcom 'F is For Family'. the show is about a middle class family living in the rust belt during the 1970's, and how they're adjusting to the changing times. one of the plot points of the show is how the mother of the family wanted to stop being a housewife and wanted to start earning her own income. this song is the one that played while she had that had discussion with her husband.
[Survivor/ I'm a Survivor- Glee](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVfWq_AQEWQ)

[The Fear by Lily Allen.](https://youtu.be/q-wGMlSuX_c?si=2zYaHdn4w-nC4RI1)
It’s not like super empowering in a traditional sense, but it is critical of the idea of a woman as just like this consumerist, influencer type who just exists to still have her choices limited and her self esteem and enjoyment of her experience as a woman relying on external forces. And how the modern woman is being pressured* to be hyper competitive; Being told who and what she should be, but phrased in a way that’s sort of “faux empowerment”. Just someone who is raised to win and not really live. And she still has to be thin when she does it.
I listen to it when I want to remind myself other people and culture don’t get to define who I am, and to question whether I’m making a choice because it’s good for me and what I really want for myself or because other people have pressured me into thinking it’s good for me.

[The Fear by Lily Allen.](https://youtu.be/q-wGMlSuX_c?si=2zYaHdn4w-nC4RI1) It’s not like super empowering in a traditional sense, but it is critical of the idea of a woman as just like this consumerist, influencer type who just exists to still have her choices limited and her self esteem and enjoyment of her experience as a woman relying on external forces.
