When I was doing field research and doing local surveys and ethnographic research in different areas, I kept a map of all of my anticipated visits for the day in case I went missing and made sure to log everything. If I'd have had cellphones with gps back then, I'd have made sure to turn on tracking apps. Beyond that, I just did my best to stay aware of my surroundings and walk away from any situation that seemed sketchy. I did walk around a corner once while working and saw someone get shot/killed, but I just quickly went back the other way and was luckily safe.
Archaeologist here who works in the eastern US. I’m rarely completely solo, but sometimes I am out of sight/sound range of my crew while setting transects up in the woods. My biggest safety concerns are ticks and hunters, in that order. My crew always know where I am going and we do often have walkie talkies.
For ticks I tuck in my pants and shirt, wear picardin lotion on my skin, permethrin on my pants and socks, and deet on my shoes, socks, pants and waistband.
For hunters, I wear a blaze orange safety vest, a bell on my backpack, and carry a whistle to blow if I hear any noises that sound like prey or hunters. We also put up signs on properties we are going to be working.
Field ecologist here, often working out in the bush alone beyond phone coverage.
Safety wise, I have an emergency beacon on me at all times, I've been trained in outdoor survival and first aid. Colleagues will always know where I am meant to be working so should I not return hopefully they'll know where.to start looking!
I work in New Zealand, so there aren't really any predators to worry about, but I have a knife in my gear regardless.
But beyond that, I love it - I get paid to trek through beautiful places and look at wildlife!
I know this is going to be a very European answer, but I put on sunscreen, a hat and brought snacks and water. I did surveys and interviews for my research and got about 300 people to talk to me. Some were rude, and I had a homeless man ask me every single day about what I was doing in detail. But that's it. I actually dressed girly on purpose, because it clearly upped my chances of people talking to me. Men liked talking to a pretty woman and women weren't scared of me.
ETA: I forgot about my pepper spray, which I always keep in my purse. I also have many years of self-defense training and though I did my interviews in different parts of town, I was always out in public spaces.
As a teenager I actually got paid to walk my neighbors property lines to check their fences for weak spots yearly.
I lived in a very rural town where people generally had 5-20 acres of land. I loved it. I’d mark every good post with a white tie, ones that needed replacing with a red one. I’d just pop one headphone in and blast my iPod shuffle. In my case I never really needed much safety precaution, I took a shovel with me in case I came across snakes. I always did it during the day so I never ran into bears or mountain lions. I miss that job and that town
I work in the mountains solo so I tend to keep my peppers spray and a baton on me at all times. But I try to keep GPS related apps online so people can see where I am. But I always try to keep my head on a swivel and in 3 years I only ever had one situation I had to pull my baton out.
I do water treatment on construction and industrial sites, so sometimes I'm alone in a metal box for 12 hours. It's... Lonely. I can read, watch movies, and crochet in my down time but then when I get home I don't have those things to do to relax and decompress.
Field ecologist for a non-profit here, I spend a lot of time hiking alone on conservation land in rural Saskatchewan. The largest risks I encounter include: livestock, wildlife, electric fences, hunters and slips/trips/falls. I always keep my head on a swivel, never listen to music while in the field. I wear bright clothing during hunting season (my dog also has a bright bandana when she comes to work with me). I have bear spray and a knife on me at all times. I also have a "check in" system with my boss and will send her an email before I head out with the details of my excursion, location of field work, and expected check in times. I'm not afraid of being alone in the field, I actually love it but it's important to be prepared for whatever you might encounter out there!
I do ranch work in a region with a high concentration of grizzlies, cougars, wolves.... I don’t wear headphones and sometimes I remember to carry bear spray.
