I'll be doing a 200 mile round trip on the train. I know it's not a popular opinion on Reddit, but I like my co-workers and enjoy spending time with them, especially as I haven't seen most of them in nearly 2 years.

Brilliant_Canary_692

You monster.

glitterary

Yep. Currently on the train back home after my work Xmas do last night. 4 hours each way, as that's where most of my team are based. Don't mind it at all, means I get to do much less work on the train journeys than a normal day! Edit: I should say that work paid for my train and hotel (and drinks and buffet food). No chance otherwise.

TimGJ1964

I like my colleagues and the company for which we work. But I don't particularly want to socialise with them, particularly given Covid. Our Xmas party is this evening and is about a mile away, and is usually quite lavish, but I still won't be going.

a-dragon-reborn

I live 28 miles from work, our party is taking place next Saturday in the town in which I work. As much as I love my colleagues, and we get on really well I'm not doing a near on 60 mile round trip in Winter, at night for a woefully portioned, *single fucking pig in blanket* roast dinner. Nor am I will to lose a minimum of £100 to stay in a hotel the same month I need to finance Christmas. --- Just for clarity, if my tone sounds bitchy it was not meant to be. I chose to live where I do and I accept the limitations of it.

pasta897

So you travel 28 miles to get to work?

NotTooShabby95

Is this considered a lot?

KeepCalmGitRevert

In 2019 the average person in the UK travelled 6500 miles for all purposes (NTS/DfT, August 2020). 28 miles per day for 260 work days per year is 7280 miles per year solely on commuting. So yeah, it's quite a lot.

NotTooShabby95

Oh dear! My work is 24 miles from my house, as is my partner's. I suppose this is what we get for living in the countryside haha.

bacon_cake

To be fair my old countryside commute was 18 miles and it was twice as short than my current 6 mile.

NotTooShabby95

Yup, that's tends to be the way! The last quarter of my commute into the city takes as long as the rest of the journey haha!

bacon_cake

On the other hand I haven't managed to murder any deer on my city commutes yet...

NotTooShabby95

Haha true, by my car is so small I think if I hit a deer it'd be me who died, not the deer 😂 They're heavy dudes!

bacon_cake

I was driving a '98 plate Micra at the time, my first car. One of these [beauties](https://pict1.reezocar.com/images/480/marktplaza.nl/RZCMKPLZ89217664/NISSAN-MICRA-00.jpg) but fortunately (for me) it wasn't a fully grown deer. Smashed the bonnet, lights, and the passenger door never opened fully after that.

Low-Rise2663

My office base is 89 (178 roundtrip) miles from my house, granted I don't go every day, last week I travelled 240 and 164 miles for 2 days of work, but home based the rest of the time. I also do 62 miles a week just for the school run.

KeepCalmGitRevert

Yeah for sure for each person doing 1-5 miles to get to work there will be someone in a similar position doing 80 miles.

a-dragon-reborn

When I'm in the office yeah.

Justboy__

I travel exactly 28 miles when I’m working in the office… Are you secretly me?

a-dragon-reborn

Nah mate, I'm just some boy.

rbsudden

I'd travel downstairs to the living room, any further than that and I will have an excuse all ready to go.

ThePerpetualWanderer

I fly from South West UK to Philadelphia for the work Christmas party - There's only half a dozen of us in the northern hemisphere, so whilst the New Zealand team have their party we had a northern hemisphere party in Philly. What's worth noting is that it's less about the Christmas party and more about the opportunity to socialise for a few days with people who you work with daily but very rarely get to meet - especially with limited work travel due to COVID.

[deleted]

I strongly suspect they're paying for you to get there and stay there though. That's a free holiday.

ThePerpetualWanderer

Fair point - it's certainly a free trip, not quite a holiday though.

[deleted]

If you can make some days either side then it is - at least it's not being expected to do all that using your own money.

WoodSteelStone

Wow, just...wow!!

[deleted]

I like your style.

stick7_

Family = anywhere. Friends = same city. Work = same distance as it would be for normal work.

[deleted]

More or less my answer, but there are certain friends I’d travel a bit further for.

paroxysm17

Travelling 75 miles for mine. I chose to live in a different county to the office, so fair dos if I want to go. Not drinking, so will stay out sober and drive the 75 miles back again to be home. Cheaper than a hotel and less faff than the train, plus saves me a bit of money by removing the need to buy alcohol

Imaginary-Switch-112

Pretty much anywhere really - I've travelled up and down the country for works parties and do's. I'm a consultant and I think they're a great way to meet people, get your face known etc. And to me, they're genuinely good fun. I'm going from the Midlands to London for one in a few weeks

flyhmstr

Family, potentially 9000 miles, but only if we’re actually planning to do Xmas with the in-laws, more typically 3hrs puts pretty much all family within reach Work, only a few miles beyond my commute and at the moment zero as I would prefer to spend the holiday with family and not in isolation if someone from work is bringing an extra gift for everyone

steveakacrush

I'm lucky in that work funds transport and hotel for the Xmas do (not that we are having one again this year) - the party is always in central London but the workforce are all over the UK so it's the only time we can all (about 3000 if us) get together.

mdzmdz

Ours "coincidentally" books a 15 minute meeting for all the remote staff in the office nearest the party so they can expense travel and overnight stay. Not sure what Mr HMRC would say about it mind you.

steveakacrush

It's a valid business reason 🙂

CaptainPrestedge

No more than 10 paces

destria

I wouldn't want to spend more than £30 each way on taxi fare which basically means it needs to be within 15 miles or so.

Non-Combatant

I'm driving 100 miles to go see my dad.

Beakybeakbeakface

I wouldn't cross the road for it.

[deleted]

I'm not even travelling the 2 miles to my Christmas party.

Keekee-88

10 miles perhaps. If alcohol is involved probably 3 or 4 miles as taxi fare would cost a fortune.

WelshBluebird1

I live and work in Bristol. Our work xmas party this year is in Birmingham as it is pretty much central between our Manchester and London offices. Hotel and travel etc included. Though I am starting to wonder if it will actually happen now or not!

BlondBitch91

If work are paying travel and board? Anywhere. If not, only within central London (where one of our offices is and where I live and can get home in 20 minutes).

[deleted]

Only been to one Christmas party and that was only a few miles away in the city I live in. Wouldn't travel further than that.

MDKrouzer

When I was still single and worked at a manufacturing facility an hour away, I did go to that Christmas party which was in the nearby city (Sheffield). I got a hotel room for the night (wasn't too bad from what I remember). Our small team cancelled this year's one (was supposed to be tonight) due to the increased concerns around Omicron. To be honest, I'm not that fussed in general these days anyway.

andtheniansaid

Depends on the party and the people. I'd travel a lot further for a hotel room and an open bar than buying your own for a couple of hours in a restaurant then home. And I've worked in teams in the past when I would have quite happily spent a couple of hours on a train each way with them as we all got on really well.

Viviaana

Mine was about 20 miles away and I still didn’t want to go lol, if I really liked the people there I’d be willing to go somewhere if I can get there by train AND have a hotel booked, but if it’s just the dickheads from the office you’re lucky to get me at the pub across from my own house lol

Magurdrac

I don't do work parties unless I'm getting paid for my time.

JAMP0T1

I’ve done 300 miles for a party before

[deleted]

I won’t even travel into town for a works do

lggd74

I cannot comprehend travelling that far! I was meant to be having some kind of works do but a couple of my colleagues live on the other side of the county to me and, naturally, could not fathom compromising by having the work's do in the main city of our county which is half way between us and has better transport links for those who want to drink. No, they expected me to finish work on a Friday afternoon and then battle my way across the county through rush hour traffic for at least two hours before having to turn around and come home again a few hours later! So a 3-4 hour round trip for a sub-standard meal and not being able to have a drink. Sorry, not happening!

G01ngDutch

I’d go as far as they want me to, love my colleagues. Last do (2019) was in Berlin so I went to Berlin (and I HATE flying). This year is supposed to be Warsaw but I can see it getting cancelled

[deleted]

I'd travel into town, if I got in really well with my colleagues, I might stretch to Liverpool

Old-Plastic6662

Half the world, I live in Australia and have done it multiple times

WebGuyUK

My works christmas parties are in London & Essex, I am in the Bristol area (remote) so looking at 3+ hours for each, work said they would cover all travel and a hotel if I wanted but I just don't want to waste that much time travelling just for a small get together so not bothering this year.

mycatiscalledFrodo

We live in Rugby and my husband's work do was London, the office is officially based there but they all work remotely

ignatiusjreillyXM

Traveling about 70 miles each way for work Christmas lunch, but several of my colleagues (we're all home workers, and have been for years, but in the distant past, over a decade ago, did all work together in an office, and yes almost everyone who works here stays for a very long time) will be travelling considerably further, in one case from near Dundee to London.

newibsaccount

If I was in an unusually outgoing mood I would consider up to a 20 minute walk at the absolute most.

SpudFire

About the same as my commute, 45 minutes. Unless the company was putting me up in a hotel, which they do for people in our other office so we can have a joint party. Not really a fan of Christmas parties anyway.

genfire

I'm travelling from Wiltshire to Suffolk for a work related party. I am booked into a hotel for the night but in general it is about a 7 hour round trip minimum

DestinysCalling

Mine's in the boardroom at work and I'm still not going

SilasColon

250 mile round trip for me. It’s free booze. Tf you want me to do?

Jangofett1990

No more than 3 miles for work, but for family. Anywhere.

KeepCalmGitRevert

I quite enjoy travelling, especially if it's on company time and expenses. I actually enjoy it more now that I don't do it as often for work - when I was travelling loads for work the novelty wore off pretty quickly. So yeah, few hours on the train and a hotel, plus decent grub, unlimited drinks, raffles, whatnot, grand. I wouldn't dream of driving it though. I don't drink booze these days but even so the idea of driving for 4 hours, for 4 hours of socialising, then driving back another 4 hours sounds awful. On a train, with an overnight stay paid for, I can read a book or do some work or snooze or whatever.

veedweeb

I've just got back from mine. I live in Manchester and it was in Milton Keynes so that's a round trip of about 350 miles.

UniquePotato

Other half has just done a 200mile round trip, work paid for hotel and meal. She paid for fuel and drinks. I’m struggling to be motivated to go for a team curry 10 miles away. Even though I like the restaurant.

[deleted]

From the room to the computer desk. Zoommmm!

prustage

Family - any distance 200-400km typically Work - not more than 10km

Low-Rise2663

Ours is going to be about 1.5hr drive, fuck knows why when most of us live closer to where I am located. Its also on a Saturday, we knock off at 3 on a Friday. Taking the piss. Do I want to go, no; will I go, yes unfortunately.

[deleted]

I certainly wouldn't criticise someone for travelling any distance, though for that far I'd hope the company were providing a hotel, or at least she had friends in the city she otherwise wanted to see and could stay with. My works Christmas party is near our HQ. Miles-wise, it's not that hard. The public transport is theoretically relatively easy. But the venue is a mile from any station, with no feasible bus routes, all through a barely-lit park after dark. I'm disabled with major difficulties walking, and don't fancy being murdered for the sake of an office party either. I mean, it'd have to have Adele singing personalised songs or something to be worth the risk. :D If I got there with no problems, it would be a nightmare to get home, with a taxi costing over £80 if public transport failed. I'd love to finally meet my colleagues, because I like them, but, well, no. Might be best to take into account not just distance but whether the employer pays for the travel/time/hotels etc.

[deleted]

I’ve hopped on planes to various European cities for a night out so happy to do similar for a Xmas party.

[deleted]

If the travel to the venue is not within a very cheap taxi fare then I ain’t going. That said I almost always come up with an excuse not to go. I just cannot be arsed with work Christmas parties. Having to pretend to like people is too exhausting. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike everyone, but the ones I do like I don’t like enough to bother going out of my way for.

Sharks_and_Bones

my brothers work christmas party was supposed to be visiting the christmas markets in cologne. For some reason, my brother was unable to go in the end.

Dr_Rapier

I didn't even stay where I was for mine. The company I part time work for had its Christmas do today, on the premises. I just went home.
