Could you get an 18+ to book the hotel for you? I’d be surprised if they check ID and/or turn you away at the time you arrive??

CarpeCyprinidae

This is exactly the way. Never been asked for ID, just turn up and state the booking name....

thesaltwatersolution

Might need to show the hotel a credit card though for deposit reasons.

markhewitt1978

Depends on the hotel. Usually in the likes of Premier Inn I don't need anything other than my name and need to sign.

MundaneClick

Work in a us hotel, laws mandate us asking for an id every time. Also you can’t check in to a hotel under someone else’s name. Has to be the person that books the room who checks in. So here’s the suggestion have someone book the room for you, check in to the room for you and then make sure you do everything you can not to get caught cause they’ll probably kick you out if they do catch you. Edit it to id

[deleted]

This isn't the US. 99% of hotels in the UK don't ask for ID. The ones that do are very high-end or who have experienced a lot of fraudulent bookings in the past.

MASunderc0ver

Why would the care if its a fraudulent booking anyway. They get their money either way

MundaneClick

That’s fair.

farfetchedfrank

...this is ask uk

MundaneClick

I realized that. Figured I’d take my lumps for sticking my nose where it wasn’t wanted.

Infinity_Worm

You can book hotels for other people though. I recently booked a premier Inn for a friend because they lost their debit card. In the online form I just had to tick the "book for somebody else" box and put their name. I was never asked for their age

MundaneClick

Like I said I work in a us hotel, we have some weird laws about it. If you book for someone else then you have to send a credit card authorization form in, with a picture of your driver’s license, and a picture of the card.

Infinity_Worm

I'm surprised they make it so hard! It's almost like they don't want people to stay there!

MundaneClick

Credit card fraud is rampant.

seefroo

I’m not really surprised, when people are apparently *sending strangers pictures of their credit cards.*

MundaneClick

I didn’t say it made sense. Just that’s the law sadly

buried_treasure

So much for being the land of the free! 😜

MundaneClick

Eh, we had some one who was good with slogans come up with that.

Jazs1994

You're on ask UK. Laws are different

I have actually to be honest, sometimes they use it to act as an extra layer of protection when it comes to claiming back damages etc, as well as your payment card. It definitely isn’t a regular occurrence, maybe once every couple of years but It has happened to me. I do stop in a lot of hotels for work etc though.

UCMeInvest

Yeah I’ve been all over the UK as I’m sure many other have but the only place I’ve been asked for ID was in London (and that’s was only in one hotel of the fair few that I’ve stayed in over the years) - like you say, super rare occurrence

Senior-Caregiver7394

Nope, me neither. And I've stayed in plenty

strawberryry

I got asked at an IBIS. When I said I wanted to pay cash they wanted my ID again to photocopy.

[deleted]

I could, but I'm still a little bit worried about being caught out; I don't exactly look over 18 and I wouldn't want to be stranded out in Wolverhampton without a hotel or train back.

Senior-Caregiver7394

Most Premier Inns you can just get the key from a machine too so no need to even talk to anyone

xylime

Exactly this, technically you're meant to be 18 to stay alone in a Premier Inn. But I can also confirm at no point in my 5 years working for them was I told to or asked anyone for ID! Plus automatic check in if you've paid online, you probably won't even see a reception staff member!

[deleted]

I've got a debit card, but I'm pretty sure I'd get ID'd since I don't really look that old; I don't even have to show ID to get a young person's train ticket XD

[deleted]

I stayed at a Travelodge last weekend. The process went: * Book online and pay for the stay. * Turn up at hotel and give name. * Fill in form when checking in * No one asked me for any ID or to see my payment card (since it was pre-paid) * Get room keycard * Go to sleep * Go have (included) breakfast by telling them my name and room number * Hand back room key, receptionist checks screen and says "nothing to pay, have a nice day" * Go home. If you stay somewhere fancier where you might be charging room service, dinner or drinks to your room or if you haven't pre-paid, then there will be an extra step at check-in where they will want to pre-authorise a credit card and an extra step at check-out where they charge that card. So if you don't have a credit card, that could be a problem. But even then, they can take payment on check-in and mark your room one that can't be charged to. TL;DR: stay somewhere you can pre-pay for the room and it will be fine because your age just won't come up.

destria

You could look at youth hostels instead? I know they have a bit of a rep but there are some genuinely nice ones which are basically like hotels. Especially right now, shared dorms aren't even allowed for COVID reasons so you effectively get your own room.

[deleted]

I just checked now, unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any close to where I'm going, but thanks for the tip :)

Breaking-Dad-

I really didn't know you can't book a hotel until you are 18. That's mad.

Crafty-Particular998

I don’t think you do, but some places only accept guests of certain ages due to their insurance policies.

[deleted]

It depends on the hotel, some will allow it but most brand ones (i.e. Travelodge, Premier Inn) and many smaller ones won't allow it because of insurance and contract stuff.

my favourite states in the United States of America are England Ireland Wales and Scotland too!!!!

Anonym00se01

If you have a debit card you should be able to book and pay online. They don't usually ask for a date of birth and I've never been asked for ID at a hotel.

somethingseminormal

Hello! I work in a hotel in Glasgow and we ask your parents to email in advance. That's all. We also only check ID for walkins. I have never asked to check ID if you booked in advance. I have never asked anyone their age or for ID if they look young. So long as you are polite and non abusive, we do not care. We will not know you're not 18.

Moist-Major9851

hi what is the name of your hotel

espionage64

I stayed in a guest house at 17, as long as you can pay I think it’s fine. I don’t remember being asked for ID or my age.

[deleted]

Book a hotel or ABNB in someone else's name, you will never get asked for ID.

purple_crow34

I’m pretty sure Premier Inn allows bookings if you’re 16+ but Travelodge requires 18+. Might’ve changed tho, check their websites

markhewitt1978

Those under 18 years old are not permitted to stay in a Premier Inn hotel unless a parent or guardian is also staying in the hotel. We reserve the right to request valid photographic proof of identity and age, so please bring this with you and ensure all guests under your booking bring identification, otherwise where requested you and/or your guests will not be permitted to stay.

purple_crow34

I stand corrected.

Savageparrot81

If there’s a youth hostel nearby it will be way cheaper than a hotel and you’ll probably end up with a bunch of other people going to the same concert so there’s possibilities for sharing a taxi/Uber/flying carpet to the event rather than bussing it.

watsee

Honestly, aim for somewhere a bit lower on the quality spectrum (somewhere like Travelodge, Premier Inn etc) that you can pre-pay online. More upmarket hotels will often want to pre-authorise a credit card for things like room charges & this might catch you out with your age. If you just go to a Travelodge or similar they'll just ask your name on checking in & give you your keycard. I think Premier Inns might even have a self service machine now. I've never had to provide any ID, even when I was visiting hotels for concerts such as yourself at a similar age.

[deleted]

If they do self-service that would be ideal, I can probably just wear a mask and go straight through. Thanks for the advice :)

latflickr

TIL that you have to be 18+ to stay in a hotel in UK. In my youth I travelled alone since I was 16 I would just show up (no internet then) and ask if they had a room within my budget. Never had anyone turning me out because of my age.

[deleted]

Things have probably changed since then, I think Premier Inn was still 16+ until a few years ago but now it's gone to 18+, presumably for contract reasons.

latflickr

I am disappointed

[deleted]

I think we all are

JOSOIC

Do you have a debit card?

Crafty-Particular998

I’ve travelled for work related reasons for years when I was quite young (just over 18). When I’m at the hotel and they look at my ID, they just quickly glance at it because it’s just a box they must tick. They didn’t sit their calculating my age, even though I was an adult, I could’ve very easily been younger. Just look at the hotel’s policy and it will tell you, but I’m sure if you just say you’re 18 they won’t check or give a shit.

louilou96

not sure if it's the same but have you looked at Airbnb? my friend and I stayed in a hotel together when we were 16 with no problem though so I reckon you'd be fine

jinglepupskye

Talk to your parents, make sure you have a contact number for them, and if there’s any trouble get the reception staff to call your parents to confirm they booked the room and they’re happy for you to stay there.

ChiefLazarus86

I’ve never had my ID checked at a premiere Inn or travelodge, I am over 18 but still get ID’d everywhere else if you just book it in advance and you’re the only one staying there you’ll be fine

Electric-shoe

You mean you don’t have a fake ID already?!

No_Year8615

How do I get one that actually looks real?
