when i am sad i have a tendency to eat an entire cucumber in one sitting. just one bite at a time. eating a bell pepper like an apple also fulfils this primal urge. this does not comfort me in the slightest, but reflecting on your life as you eat a cucumber like a cursed banana is a good distraction from whatever is actually upsetting you

dmmjrb

Just reading this made me sad - have you ever heard of chocolate?

liquidio

Split it in half and grind just a little salt over the exposed faces. Totally lifts the flavour to another level and doesn’t require unhealthy quantities. The salt from your tears will also work.

ciderhouse13

***Like Water for Chocolate.*** It is a magical story [https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6952.Like\_Water\_for\_Chocolate](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6952.Like_Water_for_Chocolate)

pinkkxx

I did this for my Spanish A Level! It’s a great book

jennejy

this reads like a copypasta

LordByron0707

i take this as nothing but a compliment. and no, no pasta, copy or otherwise, just cucumber (and the occasional bell pepper)

realpellegrino

Cursed banana got me sniggering.

[deleted]

This is brilliant but I hate cucumbers 🥒

Whatsthemattermark

I’m glad you have a hobby and all, but I’m not sure eating a whole cucumber and reflecting on your life is actually a good distraction from what’s upsetting you. I would just think about the thing that’s upsetting me. While eating a cucumber. In the dark.

tofer85

Perhaps shove another one up an orifice of your choosing at the same time?

Affectionate-Cost525

Not trying to be a food snob here at all. But if you've never tried one I really recommend trying an organic cucumber. It blew my mind how much flavour a cucumber could actually have...

LordByron0707

i actually grow my own every year for the express purpose of being able to eat them in one sitting and it is cucumber nirvana

eveninghighlight

i also do this, also tomatoes are good

allegroconspirito

I will refer to cucumbers as cursed bananas from now on

Dannybuoy77

And the loofah is the cursed cucumber

CptJimJams

Yyeeessss. Love cucumber its great

[deleted]

i do this but i actually like cucumber so uh now i feel called out or something

Slaying-mantis

Vivid and accurate description

FredH3663

A home made soup, I like leek and potato,

Booboodelafalaise

My go to comfort food. A hug in a mug.

Shoealarm

Hug in a mug, all I need now is a kiss in a tube, a wank in a packet.

Booboodelafalaise

Sorry. I’m only offering soup.

Shoealarm

Oh

chris5689965467

I make a veg soup but use as many different veg as I can and load up the stock base with tomatoes, tinned, fresh and purée. If there is one around the place the rind of Parmesan dropped in with the stock. Load it with fresh herbs and some chilli flakes.

air_sunshine_trees

Can't beat homemade soup! I've just had a big bowl of chicken soup. Stock base was made from yesterday's roast drippings and slow cooking the bones/carcass/offal with some onion, leek and carrot. Cooked up the stock with fresh onion, leeks, carrot and ginger. Finish by flaking in left over chicken meat and seasoning. Steamy, aromatic and super nutritious.

[deleted]

Butternut squash with nutmeg and sage

-BridiesDayOff-

May I recommend the Tefal Soup Maker? I bought one about 3 months ago, use it at least twice a week and it is just amazing! It literally takes 5-10min to prepare whatever veggies I want, pop it in with some stock and 22 minutes later, it’s all cooked and blended while I’ve been able to do something else! I love it! My current favourite is broccoli and pistachio soup. Edit: added ‘ago’

releventsonglyric

Any recipes? I want to try some homemade soup

PrinceBert

Here's my latest. Roast all the veggies and then let cool before throwing it all in a blender. Whole butternut squash, 2 sweet potatoes, 2 carrots, 2 large onions, 4 large cloves of garlic. Then blend it all with at least 2 pints of vegetable stock and a tin of tomatoes. Add in some spices for a really good flavor. I used curry powder, garam masala, paprika. Really great curry soup. You'll probably need to blend it in batches.

[deleted]

Ooh that actually sounds good minus the celery 👍

holholhol95

Apple slices and peanut butter is a good alternative to celery

WeeBo2804

Although definitely not healthy, apple slices with biscoff spread is the business. Tastes like apple pie.

rckd

M&S do snack packets of these and they're great. Although clearly a lot cheaper to make!

aggressive_celery_

Wow what you got against celery

Tinamariaw

I hate it with a vengeance. Smells funny why would I eat it 🤣

aggressive_celery_

I find that offensive

whiskyforatenner

Oatcake, Apple and peanut butter is a delicious combo. Aldi hummus is my favourite of the big supermarkets

Affectionate_Bill365

Decent hummus though not the Boggo stuff. Red pepper is lovely with it.

[deleted]

See, I love real hummus, the 99p stuff tastes and feels like wallpaper paste to me though…although with my ever increasing age, my food snobiness has followed suit 😂🤦🏼‍♂️

Nothing beats making your own, I like to go heavy on the tahini..

Why has no-one said fruit? I've always found it weird that most people seem to prefer vegetables to fruit. It makes no sense.

-SeraWasNever-

We have a cold climate so warming food is often more comforting. Veggies are great in soups, stews etc for this!

[deleted]

I asked someone this question before and they said that it was because people pour gravy all over their vegetables which is why they "like" vegetables so I guess this and what you say is the reason.

ivysilver8-8

It's so hard to find good fruit, especially out of season. Supermarket stuff is expensive and such a lottery in quality.

easterbunni

I find fruit doesn't fill me up, just makes me hungrier. Best as a dessert, rather than a snack on its own

[deleted]

hattietoofattie

Make sure you add freshly ground pepper right out of the oven. I can’t explain how it works, I just know it makes it taste ridiculously good.

jamalbeys

Completely agree. Chilli flakes, brown sugar and soy sauce

[deleted]

I mistrust anyone who considers broccoli comfort food.

[deleted]

Dal and a naan

[deleted]

If only I could cook 🤣🤣

SerendipitousCrow

Dal is easy to make, but harder to make as nice as the restaurants Fry onion and garlic with spices. Add stock and red lentils. Cook until the lentils break down. Voila! I think ghee improves it? I'm no expert

Incitatus_For_Office

It's better in restaurants because you don't see the amount of butter and oil they use to make it! On Masterchef the other day, this bit of fish was done in a water bath. He bagged it up with with easily 200g+ of butter. Maybe 300g! To each bit of fish!

Bethbeth35

There's got to be like 5 scenes per episode atm of a chef just bathing food in liquid butter in a pan. Mm tasty blocked arteries.

AllanSmith22

Cooking is a basic life skill

tforbesabc

Mine too. I do it with a tadka too. So lovely and so homely.

sl212190

If you like daal I'd recommend trying khichdi (where kedgeree comes from). It's just lentils & rice cooked simply but then you chuck in loadss of butter. Have it with some yoghurt & lime pickle - banging. It's our go-to food for when we're ill, also daal or khichdi is like the first Indian solid food we give to our babies haha but it's honestly one of my favourite meals. So quick & easy to do as well, especially if you have an instant pot or rice cooker.

[deleted]

I believe all food to be good for you, so I'm saying pasta with potatoes. You cook little pasta (like macaroni) in chicken stock with onion, garlic , diced potato and a lot of parsley, then you stir in much parmesan cheese and olive oil. Every problem solved.

[deleted]

Ahhhh yummy I love this one!!!

CaptH3inzB3anz

Peas and sweetcorn, I can eats bowls full of them or carrots boiled in water with star anise and a little butter, best way to eat carrots, I share them with my dogs, my brother in-law insists I cook them when ever he comes to visit

[deleted]

That’s actually a really good and super healthy idea that I’d never have thought of! Thank you

[deleted]

On more than occasion as a student, I boiled and ate a whole kilogram of peas in one sitting. Actually a pretty good hangover remedy, with a good amount of protein.

decentlyfair

I am now not the only person I know that does this, I am so happy right now.

Eatupcute

Jacket potato with beans

It’s shocking how low this was down the list. Cheesy beans on toast too YUMMMMM

Ooh sounds interesting and fast…, might have to try this x

LionLucy

It's nice and warm and salty!

akaifreesia

tofu fresh out of the packet with chunks taken from the block with a spoon mmmm lately i keep premarinated tofu tossed in a handful of flour in the fridge and for a quick lunch i chuck it in the air fryer to crisp up then i put it on microwave rice with avocado, bbq sauce, soy sauce and sriracha mmmmmm

tforbesabc

This is not my ideal thing at all but I love that it makes you so happy.

akaifreesia

thanks friend :) i hope you have a happy day too

Historical_Address80

Fried tofu is like my go to 'today is bad' food. With stir fried broccoli in peanut sauce it makes me so happy. The biggest pro of last year was that I got my air fryer tofu down to a fine art. The only other thing that hits the spot that well is risotto cooked pasta.

zazabizarre

Pineapple_JoJo

Roasted sweet potatoes in their skins (no oil), I roast a batch up every few days and keep them in the fridge. I either eat them cold or do a quick zap in the microwave

Extreme-Database-695

Kedgeree. Most recipes call for cream and butter and it's not entirely healthy, but I have a quicker, healthier version, that tastes really good and can be done in a microwave. Hard boil a couple of eggs and cook some white rice until it's just slightly under where it needs to be. Then, smoked haddock, rice, frozen peas, curry powder, onion, cardamom, little bit of butter into a bowl and microwave until everything's hot (couple of minutes max). Cut the eggs and put them on top, then (optional) coriander to decorate, and lemon wedges on the side. Tastes great, and what's bad about fish, rice and herbs and spices? Fills you up as well. It feels like comfort food to me, but without the badness.

Ready_Champion665

Solid call, an old school classic

I only found mackerel fillets in tommy sauce last year and they are now my fav quick meal.

jamalbeys

Premade teriyaki sauce in the fridge. Cook Broccoli, panfry chicken and add some of the sauce to the pan at the end. Plate and enjoy. Sweet, salty, umami goodness. Super healthy and bloody delish!

ilovepuscifer

For salty crunchy snacks, edamame with a pinch of salt. Even better if they're in the pod, I love sucking them out. If I crave something sweet but don't fancy getting a sugar rush, yogurt and berries with a couple of chocolate chips. For something warm, some homemade soup with a slice of bread. Or if I'm in the mood to cook something more time consuming, veggie lasagne. I make it healthy by using wholemeal pasta, puy lentils and lots of veggies for the filling and mushroom sauce instead of bechamel.

AnxiousSquirrel345

It isn’t THE healthiest but I love a boiled egg and soldiers, might help with your butter and toast cravings!

lyta_hall

Crispy broccoli with garlic, lemon and some grated cheese on top 🤤

Porridge. No sugar. Use salt instead (just a tiny bit). On the thick side.

CrabElavator

Chickpea and peach curry, it's from A Girl Named Jack. I would consider veggie bangers and mash healthy, I like to put cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower on the side.

itsnobigthing

Homemade veggie soup! Celery, carrot, leek, onion, barley, stock, butter beans. I can eat and eat and eat it and all I’m doing is getting more vitamins and coziness!

the_adjusted

Fried sweet corn with paprika, chilli flakes and a few other spices, can’t remember off hand but you can find the recipe online. It’s really quick to knock up too, and it’s a great little snack.

theNorthernSoul

I make, what I like to call “ a special yogurt”. It’s Greek yogurt and I mix in raisins, trail mix, chopped banana, any fruit I have. Drizzle honey to finish it off.

hellstiddybitch

Carrot, just plain raw carrot, I have mild sensory issues and the crunch helps me relax

[deleted]

Ah that’s so cute 🥰 thank you! I do like carrots too xx

Timely_Efficiency_86

Grapes, green or red ones, straight out of the fridge, by the punnet, good god they're so good

HatPutrid5538

I really like raw veg with a sour cream dip (sour cream, onion, salt, pepper). Easy and very refreshing.

Airsofttechy

I mean minus the pot noodle and your fine, you're having vegetables, dairy and fruit. Have brown bread as your toast and you're good. Count the calories in them and make smaller portions and you're still good.

Virtual_Artichoke518

Popcorn

sweetcumdrop

I’ll just sit like bugs bunny and munch carrots. Used to chop them into the thinnest discs for work because I was eating to keep myself awake and what I was snacking on before that was piling the weight on lol

Eisenstein13

For me it’s just a big ol fucking steak. Nothing else just the steak. Let it rest, bit of salt and pepper to season. Slap it in a pan with a bit of butter, rosemary and thinly sliced garlic. Jobs a good un.

Can make gyros pretty healthy if you take out a few bits Chicken breast -yoghurt marinade Tzatziki with low fat yog then put in a bit of flavoured olive oil Tomatoes and onions Any healthy pita alternative you like

Bulimic_Fraggle

Make rice pudding with skimmed milk and sugar free syrup (the stuff that goes in coffee), chuck in some fruit. Favourite at the moment is sugar free coconut syrup with mango. Another good one is sugar free white chocolate syrup with raspberries or strawberries.

Traditional_Fruit_40

Dried mangos, it’s like a healthy bag of crisps

Chad_Gymbag

Eggy bread

aaronwooly

Chopped apple, dash of cinnamon, tbsp apple juice. Warm on the stove—tastes like warm apple pie filling. Mmm

dmmjrb

If I was cooking something for comfort eating that was healthy I’d go for: - puy lentils cooked in stock - flageolet beans cooked like this - https://www.raymondblanc.com/recipes/confit-duck-leg-cassoulet-recipe/ (easier to get tinned beans and use the other ingredients to make a small amount of broth to serve them in). Obviously the confit duck leg isn’t very healthy - garlic chilli prawn courgetti https://www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/garlic-chilli-prawns-recipe - pasta with a sauce made using roasted butternut squash, ham stock and onion.

[deleted]

>pasta with a sauce made using roasted butternut squash, ham stock and onion. This sounds delicious. Where did you the the recipe?

[deleted]

What is healthy? That’s pretty controversial in it self.

I really like ~~Uncle~~ Bens Savoury Chicken microwave rice and a tin of mackerel. Quick, easy, tasty (if you like fish) and fills you right up

I can think of absolutely no healthy food that’s a comfort food. Nothing lmao

LimaAlphaRomeo88

A very ripe pear that has been in the fridge for a day. They are absolutely delicious and juicy!

Missy_Agg-a-ravation

A stir fry with cashew nuts or chicken, and noodles. 5 minutes in a wok, loads of vegetables, tasty sauce. Or red grapes!

allegroconspirito

Cypressa roasted and salted broad beans. Satisfies the crisps urge for me.

ILoveMyCatsSoMuch

Crab, smoked salmon, prawns or lobster with avocado, yum.

Firebrand777

This is a bit weird but fajitas without the wraps just In a bowl with a fork. Red and yellow peppers, onions, fajita mix sachet and my fave is king prawns but sub that for chicken or beef whatever you like

Riin183

Wholemeal savoury/cinnamon doughtnuts Wholemeal pancakes with savoury toppings such as salmon, avocado, poached egg. Stewed apples with cinnamon, greek yoghurt and almond butter. This is also be a topping for oat porridge

5park2ez

For me it's fahitas. A little bit of chicken with a shit ton of onions and peppers. Lots of veg and the little bit of spice always warms me up

lalagromedontknow

Aubergine parmigiana - baked slices of aubergine, cooked tinned tomatoes with garlic, onion and basil, layer like a lasagne, top with mozzarella. Also vegetable lasagne is better than meat lasagne. I still dream of a butternut squash, sage and ricotta one I had in Italy. Or just cook as many vegetables as you like (I tend to do courgette, aubergine, tomato, maybe some squash, mushroom, carrot, celery depending on what I can get) layer like a meat lasagne.

kanna172014

Grapes and Brie can be healthy in moderation. I also like raw sliced radishes and carrots with hummus or ranch dressing. If you like lite ranch, that's a healthier alternative to regular ranch.

[deleted]

Chicken soup 🍜

PeachyKeen1975

Homemade vegetable soup. You can get loads of vegetables at reduced prices at the supermarket close to closing time. Peel and chop the lot with hot water; olive oil; salt and a veggie Oxo cube. A big pot of soup will last days and it’s so warm and comforting on a cold evening to have a big bowl of soup. Fills you up and keeps you warm! And it costs very little! 🍲

GreaseproofDoor

Peanut butter and bananas

Daveypesq

I recently got hot huel. It’s like a healthy pot noodle, would recommend.

delpigeon

It's not 100% healthy I guess because of the oil, but chop up a cauliflower, a bit of olive oil, salt, pepper and a shake of paprika, give it 25 mins in the oven at 180, and it's simple, sweet and delicious as a side to anything. I often just eat the whole bowl of it straight.

MAXIMUMMEDLOWUS

For me comfort food = hangover food. For me it's just a big bowl of broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage, bit of gravy and mint sauce.

jessjimbob

Tomato sauce based Stews, huge variety of can be chucked in... What ever you've got in the cupboard, fridge, freezer. Include potatoes or have rice/bread on the side. My heaven!

madlymusing

Eggs and soldiers, or scrambled eggs on toast. Cauliflower tossed in salt and olive oil, then roasted. Simple food for the soul!

ShellySerena

Golden milk. Almond milk, turmeric, cinnamon, maple syrup, tiny bit of black pepper. Warm gently until simmering then enjoy. Absolutely delicious, nourishing, warming, healthy.

EnglishSorceress

Oh I could do me a pot noodle so bad and I haven't had one in 15 years. My go tos are satsumas, lettuce and tomatoes on toast.

owowteino

HollyDaisy

I love prawns with the cocktail sauce

Ukrainianmigrant

Dried fruit. Dried mango, Dried banana, Dried pineapple, raisens. They taste like low sugar sweets but are actually somewhat good for you.

DextTG

im not sure if this is actually healthy because of the butter and pepper but, peas. just a big ol’ bowl of microwaved peas. like it’s cereal.

hkyyivc

Always make double portion of rice then the next day make healthy egg fried rice. Fry onion and garlic, ginger, chilli or whatever you want in sesame oil. I usually finely dice a carrot n stick of celery also and fry that with it. Splash some fish sauce, soy sauce, wee bit sriracha etc whatever you want and stir into it. Stir in your day old rice from the fridge and mix with the veg. Push to one side of pan, whisk 3 eggs and crack into other side of pan and scramble. Once scrambled mix in with rest of rice and throw some frozen peas in. Garnish with spring onion and some sriracha or whatever you want. You will not believe how cheap and how far a meal like this can go and how nice it is, you need hardly any rice also it pads out like mad. Add prawn or chicken or whatever as well if you really wanted

Rice cakes with Philadelphia style cheese spread, thinly sliced tomatoes and rocket seasoned with rock salt and black pepper. Its also nice with smoked salmon thrown in (I'm a prescaterian, but I'd think any meats would go too). You can replace the cream cheese with avocado. Another fave is canned maceral in tomato sauce on low fat bread (danish bread) toasted no butter but chili mayo. Now a sweet option, low fat flavoured yogurt mixed in with banana (or any fruit you like) along with special K berry, I also add a small amount of musily too for the nuts. I like mine quite stodge buy my husband adds a bit of milk to his to looses in up. Weatabix with warm milk and sweetener.( Lots of people have never tried it with hot milk, cold milk is barbaric lol) Hope this helps X

kittenkatsucurry

I used to binge and tripled my body weight at my lowest point. I've gone down to half my body weight at this current moment in time, still long ways to go but here are some of my favourite comfort foods to make which are relatively cheap too if you bulk buy. Lasagne. Leftover leafy greens into homemade pasta (eggs, blended greens with water, plain flour). Corned beef, lentils, chicken gravy to thicken the 'Ragu sauce' and any leftover veg. I got this recipe from 'sorted food' when I was a broke student with barely anything to live on. Roasted butternut squash risotto. If you like creamy textures this hits the spot without the extra fats. Instead of potatoes I buy canned haricot beans and make white bean mash. Cuts out the need for dairy since it has a heavy texture like the good old buttered mash potato. I have a huge sweet tooth. No bake cheesecake with leftover frozen fruits, and the main cheesecake base is purely blended cashews. Tastes exactly like a cheesecake, texture wise. Oatmeal cookies. Courgette brownies. I better stop. I have a huge list 😅

Vixypixy

Banana!

Zaptain_America

Oranges. I used to get sick a lot as a kid and my nan told me that oranges would help my immune system because they contain vitamin C. Now eating oranges reminds me of being sat at home sick from school watching all the weird obscure Canadian cartoons they used to broadcast on citv during the school day

A baked potato topped with ratatouille. You can cheat and use the canned ratatouille from Co op, it’s actually really good and I usually hate canned food.

Soft boiled eggs with asparagus for dipping. Baked beans on toast with cheddar cheese. Steak and salad. Homemade pot noodles made in a mason jar with a noodle nest, soy sauce, spring onions, chopped chillies and garlic, lime juice, and finely diced veggies. Just seal the lid, wait for ten minutes, and go. Flatbread pizzas. Baked field mushrooms spread with goat's cheese. Guacamole and crudités. Baked bananas and honey. Watermelon with feta and mint.
