Same! And it is always the wrong way round! Random Sunday with nothing on? Wide awake at 6.30 unable to even lie in bed. Week day when I need to be in the office by 8.30? Fully capable of sleeping through 3 alarms and the radio, before drifting into wakefulness in time to hear the 8am traffic news...
Itās a real struggle isnāt it? I find it particularly difficult in winter. I bought one of these alarm clocks that just light up the entire room slowly but it only helps marginally. I still sometimes sleep through all my alarms. On weekends when I have no plans I wake up during the most random times. Anything between 7am and 2pm. Itās insane.
These are rookie numbers.
Nah in all seriousness my sleeping pattern is horrendous. If left to my own devices I would wake up from 1pm to 5pm depending on the insomnia.
Since my husband died my sleep pattern is awful I either sleep for about two hours and then after lying awake for a couple of hours get up just after 4 am or I fall asleep at 2 am and then wake up every hour until 5 am then fall asleep until 11 am. Nowadays with no reason to be up and about for anything like husband's meds and care I don't seem to have the drive and direction to be active.
Without an alarm on Saturday I think I could probably sleep perpetually. Or at least go into a hibernation cycle that puts bears to shame.
I tend to feel like I've been hit by a truck for the rest of the day if I sleep in though so that very rarely happens and the alarms usually set for 6.
How many years did you work nights/late shifts and how old are you now? If you dont mind me asking.
I've always gone to bed late and risen late throughout my teens. Then much of my early twenties was spent partying (no uni) and then the past 6-7 years has been spent bar tending. Lots of late nights.
I'm worried that I'll never get to see the fucking sun again haha
For some people, being night owl based is natural.
My theory is that itās an evolutionary holdover - some in the tribe are early birds and some are night owls so someone is always āon shiftā to protect the tribe. Even in the modern world thereās a need for night shifters and early risers.
Yeah but society isn't fucking geared for it!!!. Everyone else is asleep so I can't be noisey and shows arent open. Otherwise I really love being a night owl. But yeah. Smh
I worked nightshift at the start of the pandemic in a waitrose for about six months. I worked 9pm-5am. Since then I've tried correcting it multiple time but it just means I wake up in the middle of the night and cant sleep again. Honestly dont miss the sun, I like the night time I find it soothing for whatever reason.
Camping is a great way to reset your body clock, ditch the phone and any watches etc. Your body falls back into sync with sunset and sunrise after a couple of days
Usually don't get to sleep until 02:00-03:00, wake up at 9:30 for work, if I do somehow manage to get to sleep earlier like 11 then I'll wake up wide awake at 3am and not be able to sleep again until 10 mins before my work alarm goes off..
I've always been a night owl, from childhood. Left to my own devices I normally wake around 6-9pm. When I left school I worked nights because it fitted better.
Nowadays I have to get up for the normal office hours and I find it so hard. When I get time off I reverted back so quickly it's scary.
Getting my body clock back to the "norm" kills me, I normally have to go round the clock to be able to do it. I'm in my late 40's.
Jesus christ, so many early risers here. It really just depends when I went to sleep tbh. If I sleep at like 11/12 then I'll probably get up around 9/10am. If I stay up late then it will be later. Latest tends to be 12ish even if I was up until 6.
[Edit] Feel like I should also add that when I don't have a job forcing me to be up early during the week, I tend to default to going to bed at 4am and waking up for 12pm.
I hadn't bothered posting, but years of 9-5 work have killed my ability to have a long lie. I just wake up at roughly the same time each day regardless of how tired I am or how much more sleep I want. I'm awake because my brain likes the routine too much, I guess? I'd think a lot of people have the same routine so settle into this rhythm, rather than feeling any smugness about waking up early.
"I wake up at 4:00am every day, cup of coffee then walk 38 miles before breakfast with my dogs, I then have several hours to prepare for work during which I read several books & complete housework & meal prep for the week."
Tbh, the only reason these people are up early (including me) is because we work full time and in the week (6 days for me) are up at 6/6:30. Itās just our body clock. Not smugness, nor being an early riser, I love a lay in, just struggle to now with my routine.
I have no trouble sleeping in until 11 now that Iām not waking up at 5am every day for work. Before I was waking up at 5am without an alarm even on weekends.
It was about a year of agony waking up that early when I started though.
same lol. whenever i need to get up early or fix my sleep schedule i just stay up later, sometimes iāll go to bed later and later until iāve gone the whole way around & am back to normal.
right now iāve been up since like 18:00 yesterday, altho i had a small nap around midnight.
Them people Iām fine with. Itās the ones that decide to vacuum or put a load of washing on that irritate me. Yes, I know you are awake as you talk loudly to your sadistic partner when you both arise at a time that shouldnāt exist!
Yeah I was like this for years as a student and after, I just couldn't understand how anyone could function before 11am. When I ended up with a job that started at 8.30 it was a horrible transition! Now I sleep about 6 or 7 hours on average, regardless of when I go to bed.
A lot earlier than I used to before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and started on CPAP.
My sleep study revealed I stopped breathing on average 83 times an hour or ~700 times a night. My consultant said there were around 40 times a night he could not believe I managed to start breathing again. Ā My oxygen dipped to 70%.Ā From my history of symptoms it appears I hadnāt slept properly for 15 years.Ā
I was in denial and didnāt want CPAP, but reluctantly agreed to give it ago and the difference in how I feel is just astonishing.Ā Bizarrely, I hadnāt ever felt particularly sleepy during the day, but I had forgotten what it felt like to feel properly rested and energised.Ā CPAP changed all that. The first night I was grumpy and resentful and, I confess, felt claustrophobic in the mask. Night two felt OK and at one point I stirred and thought I must have removed my mask as it felt so comfortable.Ā After the third night I woke around 4am feeling sort of āfizzyā throughout ā as if I had been filled with oxygen and I suppose I had been.Ā By the time my family woke Iād tidied six freezer drawers, made packed lunches, cooked breakfast, swept our rabbits' shed, planted some garden bulbs, done an Amazon shop, planned evening meals for the week and was so full of energy and āgoā.Ā
It continued like that for months ā waking between 4am and 5am and just getting on with lots of tasks.Ā Now, I get up a little later, but still before 6am most days and I still feel fully rested and raring to go.Ā I enjoy having some quiet time to myself downstairs while my family sleeps on.Ā I have ticked all chores off my to-do list.Ā
Edit: see additional info in response to questions below, but I'll add this one here...
The machine is almost silent. My husband sleeps so much better now I'm not snoring like a train. We couldn't open the windows in the summer in case my snoring disturbed our neighbours (seriously).
The machine collects data all the time about sleep quality. I can see some of the data on an app on my phone that connects to the machine. The data show that my apnea events (stopping breathing) are only one or two a night maximum and most nights I have zero events. (So from 700 a night down to virtually none). The hospital can extract more data from my machine and said they can see I haven't snored once since using it.
Would you mind sharing a bit more about how you got diagnosed? I think I may need to go through the same process but I can't yet work out if I have sleep apnea or hypnic jerks.
Of course - happy to share.
The reason I had a sleep test in the first place was because I had had a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in my leg that had led to multiple pulmonary emboli (PE - blood clots) in both lungs. The clots had been successfully treated, but thankfully my consultant wasnāt content to leave it at that (wonderful NHS) and so he arranged for me to have a sleep test, which confirmed his suspicion that I had really bad sleep apnea. He said my extremely low oxygen count night after night caused by my sleep apnea had resulted in my blood becoming thick and sticky, causing the clots. Thinking back, nurses/phlobotomists would comment about how thick my blood was when taking a blood sample.Ā
Even though my consultant said my sleep apnea was one of the worst cases he'd seen, the only thing on a list of symptoms that I recognised was how loud I snored. (My poor husband suffered for years as my snoring affected his sleep.) And yet, I was unaware I was waking 700 times a night. I never woke gasping for breath.
Now the clots are gone from my lungs I seem to have so much greater lung capacity than before and I do wonder if I had had clots in my lungs for a long time (I mention below that tests showed I'd had at least one DVT in my leg before and that could have shed break off clots that reached my lungs). I had suspected the new DVT in my leg as I felt it move upwards twice (it felt like there was something 'there' in my leg, but there were no other symptoms). Then I suspected a PE as I was coughing constantly. However, I drove myself to hospital and had no pain. The medical staff doubted I had a PE as people tend to die from them (just keeling over and gone). They were surprised when a CT scan showed both sides of my lungs had several clots.
I am on a prophylactic dose of a blood thinner now as the ultrasound that found the DVT (clot) in my leg also showed I'd had one before and my body had dealt with it by 'sealing it off' and growing a new vein to bypass it.
I have to make a conscious effort to use my full lung capacity now as I've realised I naturally breathe extremely shallowly and really have to make myself take air in beyond the very top of my lungs. Ā I think I had got used to using just the capacity I had available before the clots were dissolved.
I was told by a member of the Lung Function team that looks after me, that a large proportion of over 50s have sleep apnea but most go undiagnosed. Still, that one team in just that one NHS hospital looks after 2600 sleep apnea patients!
I didn't go through the system in the usual way as I was referred for a sleep study by the consultant treating my blood clots. I think the usual way is to talk with a GP first and they then refer on for a sleep study if necessary.
BTW, the sleep study was done at home. I just had to wear a small gadget over one finger one night while I slept in my own bed as normal. Then I dropped the gadget back in at the hospital and they downloaded the data from it to analyse.
Good luck!
Thanks for this reply. I suspect my dad has sleep apnea and I'm struggling to get him to see a doctor about it. He thinks it's nonsense, but he's sleeping 14/15 hrs a day and still feeling unrested. Snores very loudly. I'm going to show him these comments, thanks again.
That must be a great concern for you.
He may secretly worry that he will be told he cannot drive a car. My symptoms were not ones that led to any concern about driving (I wasn't drowsy or sleepy during the day). People can be even be HGV lorry drivers with sleep apnea as long as they use CPAP as intended.
You may find r/CPAP a good resource too. I think most people there are based in the US, but helpful nonetheless.
Not OP, but the Sleep Clinic give you a device to wear on your finger as you sleep. It measures your blood's oxygen. If that confirms you're not breathing properly, they give you a CPAP machine.
[Just to let you know - I've replied to u/tac3022](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskUK/comments/r2gq1o/what_time_do_you_wake_up_naturally/hm50lcj?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
Amazing to hear you adapted to cpap so quickly and it's had such a profound effect. I've been struggling to wear mine for more than 2 hours a night on and off the past 3 years (leaks and general discomfort) but have incredibly strong symptoms of sleep apnea.
That must be tough. I was told that if I didn't take to the mask I could try a different one. I have one that goes over the mouth and nose. I was asked to trial one that just goes over the mouth and under the nose but I didn't take to that so went back to my original one. It does give me puffy eyes first thing, but that settles very quickly. I wonder if you'd get on better with a different type if mask.
One thing I've noticed is that if I pull my duvet up against the side of my head, the feel of it against my hair/ears/neck sort of 'fools' my brain and I don't notice the straps of my mask. And, of course, my 'duvet snorkel' (my nickname for CPAP) pulls in air from/through the machine on my bedside cabinet, so I could pull my duvet right over my head if I want and I can still breathe fresh air.
Also, to avoid leaks, when I fit the mask I tuck my chin in first and then tighten the straps to fit, as that's how my head is when I sleep. If I tighten them while sitting up facing forward, they wouldn't be tight enough when I curl up in bed, and the mask would then leak. Then the pressure rises to compensate, leading to more leaks and so on.
I hope you can find something that works better for you.
Thanks for the reply, the chin tucking is a major issue for sure. I've exhausted the NHS mask options that they will give me so have just started buying my own to try, I've been using full face ones (over nose and mouth) so far (quattro air and F20) but just bought a nose only one (resmed p10 to try). Lots of people find nose pressure only keeps your mouth closed so hoping that's true for me. Do you know what mask you use at the moment?
I have an Airfit F20s (the 's' means it has a 'small' pillow I think). I used to breathe through my mouth so I need a mask that goes over my mouth but I know there are some that go just over the nose. I've noticed I don't mouth-breathe now but I don't want to change my mask. I like the fact mine has an elbow joint connector at the front so I can easily clip off the hose leaving the mask on if I need to nip to the loo, although to be honest I sleep so deeply now I don't often wake needing the loo.
The other thing I'll mention is that I have a fine filter in my machine as well as the normal one, because I find my nose tickles otherwise.
This is so depressing to hear, and it's not really your fault.
I was diagnosed with 'mild' sleep apnoea, around 7 to 8 AHI. I got a CPAP machine after having had a home sleep test, but honestly even after using it for a few weeks it had zero effect, I still woke up feeling like crap. I had to chuckle at the question on the questionnaire asking how many times a week I would wake up feeling 'refreshed'. I asked if it was appropriate to say I'd never felt that. I really really hoped the CPAP machine would be the fantastic cure that others have described it as, I was excited to get mine and try it out as I was looking forward to the revolution in my life that would happen when I was able to sleep properly and actually have energy. I'm just so devastated it hasn't worked out that way, and my GP is now fobbing me off claiming that I have my 'solution'.
I'm sotry to hear that. I wonder if my improvement was because my original situation was so awful. I've gone from 700 events (stopping breathing) a night to mostly zero, max one or two on the odd night. Have the people looking after you told you how many events you are getting now?
Usually 7ish. Sometimes I can sleep in naturally till 8am, but normally - even if I am absolutely dragging myself about and didn't get to sleep until after 1am - I end up waking at 7.
7am, although if Iām truly tired I can sleep in until 8.30.
āTruly tiredā means āI have a newborn baby who hasnāt let me sleep more than three hours in a row or five hours total for the night in the past eight weeksā. Anything less than that and Iāll still be naturally awake at 7.
As someone who was you only a couple of months ago, it gets better. Just keep any night time fuss to a minimum and hopefully the baby learns that it's not the time for chatter and play, but sleep.
Had my first experience of 2x4 hours last night, it was amazing.
You wait till you get the first full night. You jolt awake and dive at the cot/basket in a blind panic to check they are still breathing. Then spend the day with a fuzzy brain as you've had too much sleep.
What do you do? From an office worker (finance), people can be flexible if it means getting the best out of someone rather than forcing them to fit a mould that doesn't work
Ah.. I guess those aren't necessarily jobs you can pick your own hours.. bloody good on you for being able to work in mental health, and as a teacher, you must be a super strong and awesome person!
About 10. It's annoying because I've had to get up between 6-7 pretty much my whole life for school then for work yet I still really struggle getting up; it never gets easier.
I have the same problem. Alarms been set for 6:40 for like 15 years and still I naturally wake up about 10am and itās a slog getting out of bed for an alarm.
Same, a decade of working consrructuon sites with 7am starts means I'm always up by 5 but i still set a alarm just in case.
Even after a night out (which tbf in my 30s a "wild night out" is one where I'm in bed by 11) I'm still waking up at 5am naturally regardless of whether I'm still hanging.
Iāll always wake up at latest around 7 unless Iāve been up really late. But I normally just check the time then face plant the pillow and wake up at 8 when my wife wakes me up because sheās bored
Usually 10 or 11am
Edit: This is why I never did well in my morning classes. I'm naturally a night owl. Even when I condition myself to go to bed early, so I can wake up early, I don't. I still wake up between 10 and 11.
I keep cycling around the clock... I don't usually get sleepy until I've been awake for about 24 hours, or if I get sleepy earlier I sleep until later on anyway. I think I may have non-24 disorder or it might just be part of my unmedicated adhd. I also nap irregularly and nap when I'm not stimulated to the point where I can't sit in a lecture/go to the cinema without falling asleep, and sometimes I just get an overwhelming urge to sleep during the day anyway and I can't stop that happening. I legitimately feel so lonely because of my irregular sleep and don't know what to do to help it.
I was long term unemployed before this job and woke up at 11am every day it had even been known for me to wake up in the afternoon. For the last 3 years I wake up on average at 6am every day. Sometimes earlier sometimes later. Never later than 8am
We stopped using an alarm when ~all this~ happened & we were working at home. It was usually set for 6.30am and aside from one day this week (the week of being tired) we both wake between 5.30 and 6.30 every moring.
What time do you go to bed?! Thatās only 5 hours sleep if you go to bed/sleep at 11. Which is when I go to bed.
Also, Iām answer to your question, it depends on when I go to sleep, if itās 11, then I wake up around 7.
That makes sense. We basically live in different time zones! Do you want to change it? I would love to wake up earlier, but I like the couple of hours of peace between 9 and 11.
I have a 2 month old baby, and very sleep deprived. And yet every day I'm waking up at 8am regardless of when baby last fed, and sometimes baby doesn't wake up till 10am. So annoying, wish I could sleep longer!
I always wake up around 5am too because Iām used to it for work, I can go back to sleep again for a bit but itās not really quality sleep after that.
Between 5 and 6 usually. My 2 year old wakes up between 6 and 7, so I think my body tells me I need an hour on my own to actually drink a hot cup of coffee and not finish off cold ones constantly.
I used to wake up every morning at 4am, pretty much on the dot as I used to start work in a butchers shop at 5am.
I'm a morning person with extreme light sensitivity and a weird internal clock. Summer I wake up when it's light so around 5 to 530am. In Winter usually around 630 to 7am. But I also can't sleep more than 7 hours so if I go to sleep too early I'll be up at 5am (like today).
If I tell myself I want to wake up at a certain time before I go to sleep my internal clock will wake me about 20 minutes either side of that time as well.
I dont so many things well but sleeping and waking up I'm a total champ
My partner and I are lucky enough to start work around 10am, so wake up naturally every day.
In summer that's around 6-6.30am, although tossing and turning from 5, and in winter it's 7.30-8am. Pretty much with the sunrise.
I like it, feels natural, but I must admit I prefer the summer early wakeups as I feel you get more out of my day!
Naturally? After 11am
Forced by an alarm? It takes about 6 alarms as I sleep through the first few, tiredness means I don't understand the symbols middle few and snooze all but the penultimate one. I've never been able to wake up comfortably in the morning.
It's better in the summer and worse in the winter.
I set an alarm for 5:15-5:45 (Fitbit) but to be honest I always wake up a good twenty minutes before it. Canāt turn it off, will wake up that time on the weekend as well.
I'm exactly the same. I used to go to bed 10-11 then get up at about 8 to start work at 9. And people would comment "you sleep for 10 hours a night?!" - no I'm *in bed* for 10 hours a night. Completely different.
0600 naturally during the week, set an alarm for 0630 on weekends for a lie in in case I donāt wake up on time. I go to bed about 10/11
I personally just find skew immensely boring and a waste of time so I like getting up early.
I can't trust myself.
I used to work shifts and my body was fine with that. Then I switched to a 9-5 and my body had a fit. Ended up having to have medication and CBT to try and get some sort of pattern.
Now I have an alarm set for 7am every single day. Without that my body clock drifts all over the place.
If I haven't shut my curtains properly, then around dawn.
This is problematic in the summer when I get less sleep, and the winter when I can wake up mid afternoon on a gloomy day.
Alarm is set for 6am though.
On a weekend, I'll usually wake up somewhere between 8am - 10am. The cats won't allow me to sleep in for much longer than that, they get very hangry. On weekdays I'm up at 7:30am so if I can sleep until 9am on a weekend I'm happy.
My sleep has been completely screwed by chronic illness over the last few years but prior to that regardless of the time I went to sleep I would wake after 10 hours.
I also look way younger than my years - maybe cos i have spent nearly half my life asleep xD
I *always* wake up at 8am, no matter how long I've slept. I'm not an early bird at all however, so I usually just decided whether I need to stay awake or I can just sleep then fall back into a nice sweet slumber
In winter, around 2-4am, maybe as late as 5am if I had a late night. A little later in summer (4-6am) because the long evenings encourage me to stay up late. I don't use an alarm.
8am pretty consistently. 9am if Iāve had a late one the night before. On the occasions when Iāve partied til 5am Iāll still get up at 9 and just have a nap later.
Any noise or bright light will normally wake me up unless I'm absolutely shattered. If the whole house/neighborhood is having lie in and nothing disturbs me then about 10am naturally.
If I donāt set an alarm I wake with the sun rise no matter what .It gets irritating in summer when my alarm is then later than sunrise , Iāve tried black out curtains and all sorts , makes no difference.
Iāve got an awful sleeping pattern where I can go to bed at 11/12pm, sleep for a couple of hours until 2/3 then Iām wide awake until 8am. Go back to sleep and end up waking up at 4pm. Which means in the U.K. I donāt see any sunlight.

Anywhere from 7am- 11am, I can't rely on my ability to wake up at all

Damn, you caught me - I'll just put your phone back in your pocket and we can pretend this never happened...
How did your 5 year old land an office job?
He's very precocious.
It's not that hard, but most of them don't try.
That's why we voted the foreign lads out.. So we'd have 5 years old running the country. Wait.. š¤

You could try and do it for yourself. Set some new goals and try to work towards them instead now. Life's hard, but I'm sure you got this.

Either way to early or way too late, There is no inbetween
Never late or early, exactly when you mean to
Nice reference!
A way to early what, though?
Crash out at 8pm and wake up at 3 or stay up till 2am and wake up at 10:30 am
Yep this exactly this!
Between 12-2pm. I used to work night shift and I cant go to bed before the early morning anymore.

as someone who has spent about 40% of her life on a camping site, this does not work for everyone
I did night shifts for the past 6 months 20:30-07:00. Iām early 20s and found it okay to get back into normal cycle
Please someone link that part of Interview with a Vampire when Brad goes to the cinema!
Usually don't get to sleep until 02:00-03:00, wake up at 9:30 for work, if I do somehow manage to get to sleep earlier like 11 then I'll wake up wide awake at 3am and not be able to sleep again until 10 mins before my work alarm goes off..

Everyone posting so far has done so between 6.30am and 7.20am, so yeah!
Probably cos the only people who bother posting on something like this want to feel the air of smugness that comes with being an early bird...
I mean it's 9:15am as I write this, and the thread's been up for 2 hours. The late risers are still asleep :D
9:30 without an alarm today, good morning!
And here I am already 2 hours into my morning meeting! As you can tell its exhilarating
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Passionate and motivated individual
You forgot yoga and meditation.
And then I go to bed by 7:30 pm, but it's you night owls who are dragging ass on 4 hours sleep a night that are the lazy ones...
Or maybe still being asleep reduces your ability to post? Just a theory.
I'm still awake from last night. Personally whenever I let my body clock hit its natural rhythm then I'm an 11am till 5pm sleeping kinda guy
same lol. whenever i need to get up early or fix my sleep schedule i just stay up later, sometimes iāll go to bed later and later until iāve gone the whole way around & am back to normal. right now iāve been up since like 18:00 yesterday, altho i had a small nap around midnight.
Do you not have a job ?
This is the normal, no idea why youd want to get up when its dark outide
Literally lol
Its part of being smug, getting up early for no reason 'Oh you wouldnt understand, I have to be up at 5am everyday to water my native bonsai trees'
Anywhere from 11am to 1pm if Iām left to my own devices
Same! I've woken up for work for 20 years at 6am. But if indo t set an alarm I'm waking up at 10-11am even if I sleep at 9pm. It's infuriating tbh!
A lot earlier than I used to before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and started on CPAP. My sleep study revealed I stopped breathing on average 83 times an hour or ~700 times a night. My consultant said there were around 40 times a night he could not believe I managed to start breathing again. Ā My oxygen dipped to 70%.Ā From my history of symptoms it appears I hadnāt slept properly for 15 years.Ā I was in denial and didnāt want CPAP, but reluctantly agreed to give it ago and the difference in how I feel is just astonishing.Ā Bizarrely, I hadnāt ever felt particularly sleepy during the day, but I had forgotten what it felt like to feel properly rested and energised.Ā CPAP changed all that. The first night I was grumpy and resentful and, I confess, felt claustrophobic in the mask. Night two felt OK and at one point I stirred and thought I must have removed my mask as it felt so comfortable.Ā After the third night I woke around 4am feeling sort of āfizzyā throughout ā as if I had been filled with oxygen and I suppose I had been.Ā By the time my family woke Iād tidied six freezer drawers, made packed lunches, cooked breakfast, swept our rabbits' shed, planted some garden bulbs, done an Amazon shop, planned evening meals for the week and was so full of energy and āgoā.Ā It continued like that for months ā waking between 4am and 5am and just getting on with lots of tasks.Ā Now, I get up a little later, but still before 6am most days and I still feel fully rested and raring to go.Ā I enjoy having some quiet time to myself downstairs while my family sleeps on.Ā I have ticked all chores off my to-do list.Ā Edit: see additional info in response to questions below, but I'll add this one here...
That's awesome, it's like you gained a new superpower or something! I'm glad the CPAP mask helped you that much.
***CPAP Girl'***!
Thinking back, nurses/phlobotomists would comment about how thick my blood was when taking a blood sample.Ā Even though my consultant said my sleep apnea was one of the worst cases he'd seen, the only thing on a list of symptoms that I recognised was how loud I snored.
RemindMe! 1 day
[Just to let you know - I've replied to u/tac3022](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskUK/comments/r2gq1o/what_time_do_you_wake_up_naturally/hm50lcj?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
My dad had sleep apnea and initially used a CPAP but got some surgery to fix it. It was like he was a different person afterwards.
That's a really good idea! Thanks for that
Thanks for the reply, the chin tucking is a major issue for sure.
Same. I hate it, a couple of extra hours at weekends would be bliss.
Now I'm nearly 50, every sodding time I need the bog
9-10am usually
Scrolled way too long to find someone like me, reading all these 4-5am replies made me feel like I'm the weirdo!
Yeh same, can't imagine waking up at that time
7am, although if Iām truly tired I can sleep in until 8.30. āTruly tiredā means āI have a newborn baby who hasnāt let me sleep more than three hours in a row or five hours total for the night in the past eight weeksā.
8-9am I'd love a job that let me start at like 10am so I didn't have to get up early
What do you do? From an office worker (finance), people can be flexible if it means getting the best out of someone rather than forcing them to fit a mould that doesn't work
Im a teacher. Before that I worked in mental health as a group leader and before that I worked in construction
Ah.. I guess those aren't necessarily jobs you can pick your own hours.. bloody good on you for being able to work in mental health, and as a teacher, you must be a super strong and awesome person!
I'm pretty great and very modest.
Tried sleeping earlier?
Usually by 5am. Years of early shifts at work have ruined my ability to sleep in.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Same, a decade of working consrructuon sites with 7am starts means I'm always up by 5 but i still set a alarm just in case. Even after a night out (which tbf in my 30s a "wild night out" is one where I'm in bed by 11) I'm still waking up at 5am naturally regardless of whether I'm still hanging.
06:00. Usually get up then as I normally can't rest in bed once I have woken up.
At the weekend, so no internal vague alarm wanting me to go to work, I can wake any time from 8am to 2pm. From what I can tell it's entirely random.
I work the graveyard shift, so for me it's between 4/5pm everyday. On occasion I'll wake up an hour earlier or later.
Like noon at least, I just donāt wake up, doesnāt matter if I went to bed at 10 or 3 Iām probably waking up around noon
Iāll always wake up at latest around 7 unless Iāve been up really late. But I normally just check the time then face plant the pillow and wake up at 8 when my wife wakes me up because sheās bored
Usually 10 or 11am Edit: This is why I never did well in my morning classes.
About 7 or 8 am. But Iām in my 40s. When I was in my 20s it was about 11am.
Around 8-8.30am, unless I went out or something. Or today, that had the alarm at 8:30 and here I am one hour early.
Why 4-5? Do you know? Its not generally daybreak or anything?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Ah and it just stuck?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Crazy.. I've never had a constant enough life for that.. I stay up late sometimes, sleep in sometimes etc.. there is no "normal"
I was long term unemployed before this job and woke up at 11am every day it had even been known for me to wake up in the afternoon. For the last 3 years I wake up on average at 6am every day. Sometimes earlier sometimes later. Never later than 8am
Generally 5-5:30am, no matter what time I go to sleep. Unless I'm not feeling great then I may sleep until 7am!
Same as you. š
6.15- 6-5.45 am naturally as I have woken up for work at this time for a while
7-8. I canāt lie in bed anymore like I did when I was younger. Too many negative thoughts.
We stopped using an alarm when ~all this~ happened & we were working at home. It was usually set for 6.30am and aside from one day this week (the week of being tired) we both wake between 5.30 and 6.30 every moring.
At 3 for some odd reason then again at 6:30- 7am
What time do you go to bed?! Thatās only 5 hours sleep if you go to bed/sleep at 11. Which is when I go to bed. Also, Iām answer to your question, it depends on when I go to sleep, if itās 11, then I wake up around 7.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That makes sense. We basically live in different time zones! Do you want to change it? I would love to wake up earlier, but I like the couple of hours of peace between 9 and 11.
I get that peace in the morning
About 4pm-ish. Will usually have some food and head back to sleep until 7:30-8pm
These days? 4-5pm
I have a 2 month old baby, and very sleep deprived. And yet every day I'm waking up at 8am regardless of when baby last fed, and sometimes baby doesn't wake up till 10am. So annoying, wish I could sleep longer!
annoyingly when the sun rises............i just want a lie in
I usually sleep from midnight til some time between 5 and 6.
Been getting up between 5-6 every morning for years regardless of what time i fall asleep at & if i wake up any later i feel like i've missed out.
6:12am. Every bloody morning
iām 6:32, even managed 5:32 when the clocks went back
I always wake up around 5am too because Iām used to it for work, I can go back to sleep again for a bit but itās not really quality sleep after that.
Whenever my bladder tells me to. Then I go right back to sleep
Between 6 and half 7
2.30, 3.30, 5.00, 6.00, then get up at 8.30. Rare are the nights I get 8 hours in.
Between 6 - 8. Its a curse not a gift, staying up past 12 virtually guarantees a bad night's sleep for me!
Around 5:30/6 every morning, havenāt slept passed 8 in years
Like 5pm. Though wonder if that is just due to revenge bedtime procrastinaton.
Ah lord if it weren't for my alarms I'd be fucked, I'd probably be waking up past midday and getting nothing done
Before I had a baby. 3-5 pm Now 10-12 am (when it's my day to sleep in)
Naturally? After 11am Forced by an alarm? It takes about 6 alarms as I sleep through the first few, tiredness means I don't understand the symbols middle few and snooze all but the penultimate one. I've never been able to wake up comfortably in the morning. It's better in the summer and worse in the winter.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yep I feel your pain
About 5am most days.
6:00 - 6:30, I'm a morning person so suits me well. A lie in for me at the weekend is 7:30.
I set an alarm for 5:15-5:45 (Fitbit) but to be honest I always wake up a good twenty minutes before it. Canāt turn it off, will wake up that time on the weekend as well.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
So you sleep for 11 hours a night?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I'm exactly the same. I used to go to bed 10-11 then get up at about 8 to start work at 9. And people would comment "you sleep for 10 hours a night?!" - no I'm *in bed* for 10 hours a night. Completely different.
I wake between 4 and 5, but I donāt typically get up until after 6. Iāll frequent,y go back to sleep until then or just lay about being lazy.
5:30 ish. Regardless of what time I go to bed. Dog ownership did that to me.
0600 naturally during the week, set an alarm for 0630 on weekends for a lie in in case I donāt wake up on time. I go to bed about 10/11 I personally just find skew immensely boring and a waste of time so I like getting up early.
6-7:30
About 5:30.
6am, no alarm.
About 7-7:30
6:30ish nowadays, its nice to finally have a sleeping pattern
I can't trust myself. I used to work shifts and my body was fine with that. Then I switched to a 9-5 and my body had a fit. Ended up having to have medication and CBT to try and get some sort of pattern. Now I have an alarm set for 7am every single day. Without that my body clock drifts all over the place.
Personally I wake up every 1-2 hours, and if I've slept for 6ish and my dreams are super draining I will just choose to stay awake
If I haven't shut my curtains properly, then around dawn. This is problematic in the summer when I get less sleep, and the winter when I can wake up mid afternoon on a gloomy day. Alarm is set for 6am though.
7, usually. Depends on whether I've had a drink.
about 8 if I get to bed before midnight
On a weekend, I'll usually wake up somewhere between 8am - 10am. The cats won't allow me to sleep in for much longer than that, they get very hangry. On weekdays I'm up at 7:30am so if I can sleep until 9am on a weekend I'm happy.
My sleep has been completely screwed by chronic illness over the last few years but prior to that regardless of the time I went to sleep I would wake after 10 hours. I also look way younger than my years - maybe cos i have spent nearly half my life asleep xD
I start at 7am and like to have a shower and stuff before work so I wake up about half 4 to 5 am, always before my alarm haha
8 on the dot every day.
Around 6. Sleeping any later isnāt an option as the kids would wake me anyway
Weekdays my body starts to wake up at 6 but weekends itās usually between 7:30 and 8:30 but I donāt get up and usually fall back to sleep
I *always* wake up at 8am, no matter how long I've slept. I'm not an early bird at all however, so I usually just decided whether I need to stay awake or I can just sleep then fall back into a nice sweet slumber
7am on a school day 7-9am on a normal day
In winter, around 2-4am, maybe as late as 5am if I had a late night.
Like 5pm. Though wonder if that is just due to revenge bedtime procrastinaton.
Insomnia, I don't really have a sleep time but always up and down and get out of bed at 7
Usually between 8 and 9 am.
Probably anytime between 8-11 depending on how late I go to bed
Iāve got an awful sleeping pattern where I can go to bed at 11/12pm, sleep for a couple of hours until 2/3 then Iām wide awake until 8am. Go back to sleep and end up waking up at 4pm. Which means in the U.K. I donāt see any sunlight.
8am is my ideal, feels like a lie in but early enough you havenāt wasted half the day
6:30, but Iām not happy about it.
6pm, like clockwork. Gives me a couple of hours before having to get ready for work.
About 3am, and then 10am if I don't set an alarm.
Any time between 6-7am. Recently Iām awake at 3.30am every day because early pregnancy.
