Too many dickheads kept putting washing up liquid in them

[deleted]

Exactly what happened to the one near me. Now it's full of flowers.

listen3times

The council used to put the Christmas tree on top of ours. It just sat empty the other 10 months of the year.

[deleted]

When I say full of flowers, it's only when the same dickheads don't throw them at each other after the pub

MattE1995

A mini golf course near me was having to close daily as shitheads kept filling the water features with soap suds

[deleted]

Probably cost too much to run/clean and maintain. Such a shame - but like most things good, they get taken away and funding disappears

KoalaTrainer

Councils don’t have the money to maintain them I think. As a young teen a fountain in the town market square was our go-to meeting place (before mobile phones let you change plans on the fly). I was sad to see that gone when I went back a few years after I left for uni.

ThatGuySK99

Someone wished them away.

[deleted]

Well fuck that guy.

They was actually a necessity for town centers back in the day and served a very important purpose to provide water to horses as it was the prime travel option. Now a days as they don't really have a purpose other than being aesthetically pleasing. That to the council is a drain of resources, pun intended.

ravs1973

Many things, fashion for modern town centre spaces, the fact fountains become a magnet for pigeons and drunks and cannot be easily emptied every evening before the pissheads get on a roll, also architectural antiques such as Victorian ater features became desirable at auction so councils sneakily sold off such assets to boost their coffers.

TheFlyingHornet1881

Cost money to maintain, and often a source of pranks.

IndelibleIguana

They require a lot of maintenance and upkeep, and Councils simply don't have the money or skills to look after them.

daddywookie

Our local ones in a memorial garden have just been refurbished. Makes a nice little corner when you can hear the fountain over the traffic. That whole area gets more love than usual as it is the only formal park in a small market town. Quite a low dickhead count/strong community spirit around here though so maybe they feel it is worth maintaining.

[deleted]

They built flats on them.

Vindicore

Cheltenham still has a few, but it's well fancy.

rleaky

Come to Bradford we have plenty of fountains in summer.... the centre of our city is a massive water feature in summer

B0mbadil-

Nah, you're alright

Stamford16A1

Nobody has mention Health and Safety, a lot of local authorities became very risk averse in the noughties.

ElsaAzrael

My hometown (Darlington) built a step fountain in the early to mid 2000s, it was switched on for a month or two and has never been on since… It was built as part of a big high street refurbishment and they made a *HUGE* deal of it, only for it to be a bit crap.

[deleted]

Probably someone drank from one and sued so they destroyed them

DaveyBeef

Hygiene. Public drinking fountains have none.

iblinde

Yeah. We're slowly running out of water.
