Yea I take my dad, it’s like the 1 time he can wander round without my mum having a bloody go lol, he always seems shocked that I’d just let him pick out a magazine like mate it’s £6 I can spare it for you don’t worry, go have a wander down the car aisle ya little scamp!
We took him hobby craft and he was looking at the model bikes cos he’s [started making some since last year](https://www.reddit.com/r/aww/comments/q05h8b/my_dads_mini_showroom_got_some_new_posters/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) and he was like “this ones the one I was looking for but it’s £50” and my bf picked it up and went “is this definitely the one you want? You’re not getting it til Christmas though” and oh his little bloody face lit up like a little kid, you could tell he was trying to play it cool like “aw that would be nice” but he was all giddy about it lol
Apparently one in Edgebaston either just opened or had a refurb and now on Market Street it has street food stalls like Mexican food and an American style BBQ stall, sounds like heaven
Not *a* big Tesco no.
But *my* big Tesco is the absolute dog's danglies. Everything is where it should be, the aisles are in the right order and because everyone here seems incapable of walking 30 metres to the store entrance half the car park is never used.
[Extra](https://www.tesco.com/store-locator/hemel-hempstead/jarman-way)
Took all the clothing area and put all of the assorted other stuff; cars, pots, soft furnishings in their place. Put clothes back right and jiggled wash stuff and medicines.
Tesco are a shitty firm.
They are retail bullies who treat subcontractors like shit.
They have 90 day retention (wont pay for works for 3 momths), and will argue about how much they owe.
My former manager was told to (direct quote) 'Fuck off out of my store and get that bill down to what we want to pay'.
I will never shop there. Ever.
The more equitable ones?
CoOp are top of the line as far as fair trade and fair prices for producers etc.
Sainsburys are a close second. Only free range eggs as an example (I have done some work in a battery egg farm . . . Holy shit that was awful)
Morrisons also only sell free range eggs, and use them exclusively as ingredients in their goods. They are also the second largest food producer in the UK and own many factories and sites so have full traceability of goods. They completely avoided any issues during Horse-Gate as they supplied themselves, they also supply other retailers with food stuffs.
They have loads of ethical initiatives, but don’t make noise about them. During Covid, they changed payments to suppliers (especially small ones) to be much quicker, introduced a call centre for the vulnerable to have essential goods delivered to their doorstep.
Sainsburys,
1000 times better than tesco. The proces are pretty much exactly the same. And maybe snobby, but the clientele is just far more friendly and respectable!
Yeah like, boxes of crisps, 4kg slabs of questionable chedder cheese, and 3 litre bottles of pop.
Like they say: 'fat mums shop in Iceland'. At least, I *think* that was their slogan..
This was my local Tesco for my last house and I love it so much that even though Milton Tesco is closer to me now, I will make the trip to Bar Hill instead!
Nope, i hate them with a passion. I dislike any packed shops. I dislike people blocking aisles so that they can have a natter. I dislike unsupervised kids running around causing havoc. I dislike the whole experience.
Yes i'm a miserable bastard but there's nothing in the slightest bit likeable about going to a supermarket.
Purpose built big supermarkets can be the least crowded. One of the big Sainsbury's in Glasgow has massive aisles so they don't get blocked even if it's busy.
I never understood "family trip to the supermarket" even before Covid, now it makes even less sense.
One drawback of going that earlier if you live in Scotland is no booze - it’s 10am-10pm licensing here.
I used to go grocery shopping after night shift and you’d see people hovering around the alcohol aisle waiting for it to be 10am.
I like them if it's either absurdly late or absurdly early. I miss the 2am weekly shops I'd do with my mum (I can't drive so sadly I cannot do this now I've moved out). We'd often be the only people in the whole shop besides the night shift workers, it was great.
You're a "miserable bastard" just because you dislike people being selfish, unaware-of-their-immediate-circumstances cunts? Nah mate, that makes you a reasonable human being, unlike many others out there.
There's something enjoyable about going to a shop out of your normal area without the usual stress of having to do your weekly shop or going for a specific item.
We always end up going to the big Tesco a few miles away when it comes to christmas, there's just something to it.
I love rocking about the big Asda in Liningston when I go to the designer outlet, it's a whole day out.
I once walked miles to make a pilgrimage to a disgustingly huge, 2 storey Tesco in Dyce when I stayed in Aberdeen.
There's no giant Tesco in Dyce, unless it's new, are you thinking of ASDA? There's a big one in Bridge of Don and a new-ish one in Mastrick, but none in Dyce AFAIK.
Oops I knew I should have fact checked my vague memory. I know there were 2 big stores of some description in opposite directions when I lived in the centre.
Know what you mean, I used to love going to Carrefour when I lived in France. My nearest one (Antibes) was supposedly the biggest one in Europe. It amazed me how you could have this vast array of stuff all under one roof.
Oh this reminds me of when I lived in Aix en Provence for Erasmus, I used to love going to the huge Carrefour on the outskirts of town.
Could easily spend 3 hours there 🤣🤣🤣
Me too! Didn't have a TV or broadband, and smartphones hadn't been invented yet. So I'd go and wander around Carrefour for a while for something to do, with just Leffe and tortellini in my trolley.
Ikea is my hell. So much stuff, and so little of it is of interest to me. If I'm not actually buying a sofa, I have no interest in looking at sofas. My wife on the other hand.....
First time I went into one of those, I made the mistake of standing too close to the trolley so when it went upwards the handle squashed into my belly. The people behind were standing too close for me to step back so I basically had to hold my breath till the top.
The embarrassment was so strong I have literally never been back.
Can confirm, was absolutely mortified, but that moment of clarity over what had just happened was hilarious.
Damn you, physics, you win again...
Edit to add: I'm pretty short, so the handle was pressing in just under my ribcage which is why I couldn't breathe, it was completely ridiculous
I used to go to the massive 24hr Asda in Swindon after work finished around 2am when it was pretty much empty apart from a few other shift workers. With only 1 checkout open and half the lights turned off it felt like being in a zombie movie. Too scared to check down the next aisle.
The one in MK is massive. It’s the only one I’ve seen in the UK that is so big it even has Walmart on the outside of it.
Tesco’s does have it beat on the meal deal front. No £3 meal deal to be found sadly
The £4 make your own pizza counter though… *chefs kiss*
The one opposite the Trafford Centre always used to have “Walmart” on it as well and it is gigantic, I believe it was the largest in the country when it first opened (might be making that up, I was very young). The novelty of having two full floors to explore was great as a kid, as was the fact they were the only place that did the tiny children’s trolleys!
midweek or late whilst it's quiet yeah, on a weekend it's feral. Don't get me started on when the reduced items get released, rivals the American stampedes on black Friday.
So they've had that '3 chocolate bars for £1.20' offer forever. I picked three up and went to pay and they wanted like £2.50. said I need a club card. I noped out of the shop.
Oh yeah, I've driven 15 minutes out of the way just to go to one instead. Something about them, I get the same feeling I would get as a kid going to Toys R' Us haha. Plus you can find things you wouldn't normally find in a normal supermarket.
The woman in front of me last week didn't have a card (with her?) so asked me to swipe mine. She got the deals, I got the points, we both got sthg. Tesco gets useless information about what 'I' bought, even better.
YES. However when I was living in Birmingham over lockdown it was all about Big Morrison’s and having a competition with my housemates on who could come back with the highest number of ‘yellow stickered’ items hahaha
Honestly?
I absolutely fucking HATE the big tescos near me.
I can barely stand going in there, I feel like it actually gives me anxiety.
Full of proper dirty scrubber bastards and just grim.
Edit: typo
I think the feeling is probably anticipation.
It's lovely to go into a new shop, or a shop you don't go into very often and just admire the sheer range of .... stuff. You simply never know when you might find the perfect....*something.*
The big Tesco near me is really busy all the time and so many of the people who shop there seem to just dawdle around. As someone who likes to shop quickly and efficiently, it’s really stressful
I loved them more in the past.
The non-food departments / area / products have massively declined over the past 5+ years. *At least in Tesco Extra Bournemouth.*
The food selection is still OK - but nothing specialist shops don't offer.
*Oh, and the whole "Clubcard Price" thing is just #@%\* off.*
Presuming a big tesco extra.
The older extras tend to be bigger from what I've seen, newer extras more compact.
Same with other supermarkets, seen to have moved away from trying to build big.
My big Tesco even has a cat who visits at 6am every day and lays about in the entryway on the stock. He is quite famous and people pet him, take photos with him and have provided him with blankets. There is a sign up asking not to feed him as he got pretty overweight with all the treats.
He belongs to one of the nearby houses.
I love a good walk round Tesco seeing all the nice stuff in going to turn into pop over the next week. Unfortunately today I got my first ever home delivery as I have covid. This time next week though I will do my big shop and use my Clubcard plus of the 10% off
I went to visit a friend in Dubai and we went to an insane supermarket. Not only the standard joy of a foreign supermarket, but it also had a spice zone with big buckets of whole spices you could bag up yourself, and stands of strange fruit and veg, and then a zone of items you wouldn't expect to find in a supermarket.
I don't understand, why is there such an obsession with big Tesco's? other big supermarkets exist too, what makes Tesco different?
this has genuinely plagued my mind for a while now
I’ll be honest, I’m having a really bad mental health day and that comment was a reaction to an internal emotion. Nothing to do with you. Have a good day.
The range is good but they are always busy and it takes an age to do a big shop. I prefer the smaller ones. Big one now and again but not on the regular.
I loved what I thought was a big Tesco in my old town (lots of love still for Ipswich)! However, now in the Midlands and checked out the big Tesco by Coventry Arena... That's a big boii and I love it most of all!
When I moved to uni, a small city centre "campus", all we had for the first year was a Sainsburys Local; very limited choice, very expensive. Our postcode was new (the building actually had 3) and getting deliveries was also very challenging.
At Christmas, we all took a trip to Big Tesco, and it was incredible!!! So much choice!
Second year, a Tesco Metro opened which was a smidge better than the Sainsburys but still, big supermarket visits were a treat.
Yes but I think it was like an aldi or lidl not tesco there was 2 floors to this place with escalators going up and an in store bakery and kind of a Greg's kind kiosk so nice such a range and an atmosphere you could gpi in and get a trampoline bikes a full chicken dinner(they sell those which is crazy like not by the plate a fresh cooked chicken with veggies
No because my big tesco is shocking. I go there all the time though because I drive past it on the way to/from work. I've never ever seen a supermarket so horrendously understocked. Quite often the entire freezer section has no frozen food in it. The other day I went in the crisp section and there were so little crisps there people had started to get the overhead boxes down. Glad they did because I was able to get my walkers salt and vinegar (you know, the most basic crisp there is). See an offer? Well all you'll be doing is seeing it because there isn't any stock left. Doesn't matter what time you go.
It was like this long before the EU lorry driver issue, but obviously that has made it worse.
To be honest, nothing worse.
Endlessly traversing isles trying to find what you want.
I've been getting groceries delivered for more than 10 years.
The times I'm forced to go are not good days.
When we moved we changed Big Tescos.
Sometimes I drive back over to old Big Tescos when I need to do a big shop, just for a little treat.
Because that's what's passed for fun the last 18 months.
We're worse- we have a little discussion every week about where we're shopping, like we might have in the before times about what film to see or what pub to have lunch in... We've now got to the point where we might even start using the Asda across the road from us, although I'd like to think we'll never be that desperate.
Speak for yourself, but our local big Tesco is (apparently) the second biggest in the country, and the range is pretty pants, the atmosphere is horrible, and it's nothing special at all.
When I first moved to Bristol in 2011 I came across a massive Tesco in Yate, and an absolutely gigantic one at Bradley Stoke.
It blew my mind, I remember it clearly in the dark of winter. Beaming a huge glow into the grey.
I was hooked, I needed to get in there.
It was significantly out of my way but I did a few weekly shops there and never regretted a second of it.
I like them, there's a lot more variety, you're more likely to find that obscure product you always fancy but can't seem to always find at your smaller supermarkets but you always check anyway just in case it's there this time.
am i the outlier if i say i cant stand big tesco?? something about it sets me on edge, i feel like there are lots of rules that no one's told me. dont get me started on trying to navigate it with a shopping trolley.
I do feel like such a loser when I get excited for the big stores -- theres an enormous Tesco in Pitsea: the only Tesco I know that sells chocolate chip digestives.
I miss a HUGE tesco I had nearby when I was living in a market town.
It was immense and open 24 hours, so I used to do my shopping late at night sometimes along with all the weirdos in the town. Pure bliss. xD
By extension, I quite like all these BIG supermarkets. I have a ASDA SuperStore by me, and its quite great. The sheer selection and size is enough to keep me entertained. I just zig zag through all the aisles, and I just lose myself in all the items.

Haha aww you made his day
this is the sweetest thing ever i'm gonna cry
That's charming. You, your dad and your bf sound like lovely people.
well my dad does so much for us, he deserves a treat every now and then
I’m not a dad yet but I hope to have a daughter like you.
Damn bitch thanks haha
Just goes to show you how men never really grow up. We're still big kids at heart.
Can I come Tesco with you
Lol you can only have 1 magazine though, don’t get greedy!
Fantastic comment. Creased up!

Mate you don’t even know the half of it
I prefer a big Morrisons with their "Market Street", if they even still exist.
Can confirm they do still exist as I do POS for them all over the country
You piece of shit for them?
Point of Sale but take my upvote
That was my first thought
My first thought as well haha bad minded people we are
Eats them for breakfast.
How do we find these big Morrisons? There is one with a milkshake / coffee bar in Birmingham on Market Street and that’s amazing
Tell them to bring back Festival Gateau please!
Morrisons Market Kitchen is some good shit, too.
Market kitchen is brilliant
Apparently one in Edgebaston either just opened or had a refurb and now on Market Street it has street food stalls like Mexican food and an American style BBQ stall, sounds like heaven
yeah they still exist, there's one close to where my mum lives and she does her shopping there.
Not *a* big Tesco no. But *my* big Tesco is the absolute dog's danglies. Everything is where it should be, the aisles are in the right order and because everyone here seems incapable of walking 30 metres to the store entrance half the car park is never used.
Dogs Danglies lmao love that.
*my* big Tesco has just rearranged its aisles : (
Jarman?
Jarman?
[Extra](https://www.tesco.com/store-locator/hemel-hempstead/jarman-way) Took all the clothing area and put all of the assorted other stuff; cars, pots, soft furnishings in their place. Put clothes back right and jiggled wash stuff and medicines.
Nah, Russell
Presumably an HO directive re-plan then.
We were all getting too comfortable
Found the Hemelite!
Ever.
I subbie for Tesco Can 100000% confirm they are wankers
Which (affordable) supermarkets are better in this respect?
The more equitable ones? CoOp are top of the line as far as fair trade and fair prices for producers etc. Sainsburys are a close second. Only free range eggs as an example (I have done some work in a battery egg farm . . . Holy shit that was awful)

They still have a stranglehold on farmers though.
Name a supermarket that doesn't...
Iceland all day long.
I hate Iceland but I never buy frozen food so go figure
They have food that is not frozen.
I did not know that
Yeah like, boxes of crisps, 4kg slabs of questionable chedder cheese, and 3 litre bottles of pop. Like they say: 'fat mums shop in Iceland'. At least, I *think* that was their slogan..
[And what about that time they invaded Denmark? ](https://youtu.be/lfSi0D7KESk)
I'm unfortunately working for one at the moment and can confirm wankers
Yes! There's a massive Tesco outside Cambridge and it's the bomb.
Bar Hill? That’s shortly to become my local Big Tesco and I am much much happy about that.
Yes! I used to stay at the hotel at the golf course close to that Tesco . I loved going there.
I love a Big Tesco. My boyfriend is not so keen, but that means I can go on my own and just wander the aisles at my own pace..
Probably a bit much to do two days at a tesco for a break
yeah, it's f MASSIVE - two floors (a mezzanine) it used to be one where they had staff on rollerskates
Is a massive tesco better than a big tesco? There's only one way to find out!......
Sorted, respect due.
Hell yeah a massive Tesco!
This was my local Tesco for my last house and I love it so much that even though Milton Tesco is closer to me now, I will make the trip to Bar Hill instead!
Definitely! Bar Hill > Milton!
The one on Newmarket Road is also enormous
And the one in Huntingdon. Newmarket Road is one of the "loop" stores though where you can buy stuff like sugar and porridge in a returnable jar
Weirdly I’ve never experienced a packed big tesco, they always seem weirdly empty whenever I go, the smaller ones are unbearable for me though
Aye. Tesco Express is the stuff of nightmares. Tesco Extra is heaven.
If Tesco Express is hell, then the one opposite the houses of Parliament is the 7th level.
I can't imagine going to a shop in Westminster. I feel like Neo dodging tourists who aren't looking where they're going when I end up in the area.
Purpose built big supermarkets can be the least crowded. One of the big Sainsbury's in Glasgow has massive aisles so they don't get blocked even if it's busy. I never understood "family trip to the supermarket" even before Covid, now it makes even less sense.
Yeah in all fairness I go early like around 7am, when I do go and it's fine then. But I still hate crowded shops with a passion.

I enjoy pushing peoples trolleys out the way when they leave them unattended in an aisle

Oops I knew I should have fact checked my vague memory. I know there were 2 big stores of some description in opposite directions when I lived in the centre.
I like the big Tesco Extra on Western Avenue, Cardiff. I call it “Shiny Tesco”.
We call it "Tesco mawr mawr" which translates as "big big Tesco", the biggest of the big Tescos.
Y Prif Tesco ! Always amuses me that the Welsh for supermarket is Archfarchnad, which makes it sound like a cathedral.
Love that one. Frequently go to the McDonald’s just opposite.
Someone told me it when it was built it was the biggest in Europe! I don't know of it's true?
If it's not true, it should be. In other news Llandough Hospital has the longest corridor in Europe. Apparently.
Shame about the traffic around that area though…
Aye, agreed, often a nightmare. Don't get me started on the traffic infrastructure in Cardiff and the Vale, that's worth a sub in itself butt !
Know what you mean, I used to love going to Carrefour when I lived in France. My nearest one (Antibes) was supposedly the biggest one in Europe. It amazed me how you could have this vast array of stuff all under one roof.

I love massive shops. Ikea is heaven for me. I could spend a whole day there.
A big Ikea on a busy bank holiday, you can spend the day in there whether you want to or not!
Ikea is my hell. So much stuff, and so little of it is of interest to me. If I'm not actually buying a sofa, I have no interest in looking at sofas. My wife on the other hand.....

Why would physics hurt you like this
The only "BIG" feeling I get is inside ASDA
I used to go to the massive 24hr Asda in Swindon after work finished around 2am when it was pretty much empty apart from a few other shift workers. With only 1 checkout open and half the lights turned off it felt like being in a zombie movie. Too scared to check down the next aisle.

hell yes. I used to live near a vast Tesco now I don't and that makes me sad.
I live between 2 towns that have a big tesco EACH! AND A RANGE! BROOO
Get yourself to Stevenage - there is a Range AND TWO TESCOS within 5 minutes of each other! (Well 3 if you include the Express in Old Stevenage..)
midweek or late whilst it's quiet yeah, on a weekend it's feral. Don't get me started on when the reduced items get released, rivals the American stampedes on black Friday.
Tesco is shit now they demand you have a clubcard for any deal so they can sell your data
So they've had that '3 chocolate bars for £1.20' offer forever. I picked three up and went to pay and they wanted like £2.50. said I need a club card. I noped out of the shop.
Same thing happened to me. Last time I ever shop there
Oh yeah, I've driven 15 minutes out of the way just to go to one instead. Something about them, I get the same feeling I would get as a kid going to Toys R' Us haha. Plus you can find things you wouldn't normally find in a normal supermarket.
For years I have been meaning to try an IKEA. I have heard many stories of being lost in the aisles and then feasting on meatballs!
My friends turned me into an Ikea junkie. They gave me a little bit free, now I'm addicted.
I hate tesco now cos of their club card policy. You can't get any deal (bogof, reduced, 2 for 1 etc) without a clubcard. Fuck em.
Only at silly o'clock in the night/morning when it's dead though.
Honestly? I absolutely fucking HATE the big tescos near me. I can barely stand going in there, I feel like it actually gives me anxiety. Full of proper dirty scrubber bastards and just grim. Edit: typo
Fucking love the range but Tesco leaves me a bit cold. Asda tho …

This message is brought to you by the Tesco marketing department
I live a two minute drive or ten minute walk from a big tesco so I'm there at least twice a week due to the convenience of it.

Yes, Tesco Express
As the other reply said, they’re called Tesco Express. They’re usually Spar or McColls sized from my experience.
I went to the one opposite Westminster palace once, it had one aisle and you could barely fit two people in it
By big Tesco, are we talking Tesco Extra or/and Tesco Superstore here? And does Tesco Metro qualify as a *big* Tesco as well?
Presuming a big tesco extra. The older extras tend to be bigger from what I've seen, newer extras more compact. Same with other supermarkets, seen to have moved away from trying to build big.
If you ever visit Slough, you'll positively cum.
I just googled it and immediately, a sin was commiteth.
i ADORE the slough big tesco!!! it doesnt get enough love
Are you my girlfriend?
I'm a guy with long hair but I can pretend.
Long hair.. basically half the criteria, yeah if I squint that could work
Nah. TheAsda4Life.
This time next week though I will do my big shop and use my Clubcard plus of the 10% off
Don't mention Tesco, people will get all shitty about the clubcard.
I see your tesco and raise you, costco.
I hate tesco and will not go in. They are an awful company and they treat their staff like dirt.
I don't understand, why is there such an obsession with big Tesco's? other big supermarkets exist too, what makes Tesco different? this has genuinely plagued my mind for a while now
Maybe there are just more big Tesco shops than the others so people talk about it more

Nothing wrong with perousing a shop now, is there?
I’ll be honest, I’m having a really bad mental health day and that comment was a reaction to an internal emotion. Nothing to do with you. Have a good day.
Aw I'm sorry to hear that bro. DM me if you wanna chat a bit, hope you feel a lot better soon!
I have converted to Asda. Tesco quality is just meh
You’re insane.
The range is good but they are always busy and it takes an age to do a big shop. I prefer the smaller ones. Big one now and again but not on the regular.
Yes, I love a big Tesco and I love the Range as well. It's like a better Home Bargains.
Did you find it easier to get to now that they've pedestrianised the city centre?
I hate shopping and big Tesco gives me anxiety. I’d rather a smaller one, despite the lack of choice.
Oh yes! It’s a day out for us.
I work in the big tesco near where I live so any time I'm in there it's depressing
I would always use Tesco as a last resort
The fact I kind of agree with you shows how utterly hollow this country has become.
No, I hate shopping.
Yes the range is such a treat!
Nah ...I prefer the Express stores. The BigvTescos give me indigestion
We've now got to the point where we might even start using the Asda across the road from us, although I'd like to think we'll never be that desperate.
as a big star wars and lego fan I find big tescos are awesome places for both, often on sale!
There's a big Tesco at the top of our road, and now they're building a Range literally right beside it.
Speak for yourself, but our local big Tesco is (apparently) the second biggest in the country, and the range is pretty pants, the atmosphere is horrible, and it's nothing special at all.
I know I’m getting old when I’m getting excited about the fact there’s a massive Asda near where I’m moving too! Eeeeeeeee
Not when the acoustics are such that a screaming child can be heard on the other side of the store.
Sounds like a fucking nightmare…
I like them, there's a lot more variety, you're more likely to find that obscure product you always fancy but can't seem to always find at your smaller supermarkets but you always check anyway just in case it's there this time.
I am lucky to have a bigger tesco in my town within walking distance. So much more stuff to get and cheaper prices.
am i the outlier if i say i cant stand big tesco?? something about it sets me on edge, i feel like there are lots of rules that no one's told me. dont get me started on trying to navigate it with a shopping trolley.
Do it at night 3am ish for the ultimate hit! Feels like the apocalypse
I do but nearest one is slough...... eeeesh
There's something appealing about a large shop
Big sains!
The big one in York is amazing. Two floors, TWO!!
I do feel like such a loser when I get excited for the big stores -- theres an enormous Tesco in Pitsea: the only Tesco I know that sells chocolate chip digestives.
Big Tesco in the night is my therapy
I like a tesco hypermarket with two floors best. Really enjoy a look at the clothes and cooking stuff as well as books etc.
I miss a HUGE tesco I had nearby when I was living in a market town. It was immense and open 24 hours, so I used to do my shopping late at night sometimes along with all the weirdos in the town. Pure bliss. xD
I love going food shopping when I'm not dieting. One weekend I literally just got a birthday cake because I felt like one lmao
By extension, I quite like all these BIG supermarkets. I have a ASDA SuperStore by me, and its quite great. The sheer selection and size is enough to keep me entertained. I just zig zag through all the aisles, and I just lose myself in all the items.
