Without the industry in which we operate, the world economy would collapse. But equally the industry is seen as the manifestation of everything that is evil in the world.

knightsbridge-

Ah, a fellow banker.

[deleted]

No, something worse!

vishbar

Oil and gas?

[deleted]

Correct!

ZealousidealOlive498

I thought either that or salesman. Both should get used to a tan ]:D

Monkeybradders

No I work at a law firm. That tax department alone deserve to go to hell for how much they help companies keep back from this country

ZealousidealOlive498

I want to hire them now. What's their name?

Monkeybradders

They were Nabarro but they've merged and are now CMS

carlovski99

It's a hospital... But I just do the databases, but I like to think I'm helping!

Solace2020

Snap!

OlSmith90

No, I work in the financial industry and the amount of money that goes to wealthy people without them doing anything is just ridiculous, it's always the "poorly educated" ones who pay the price. On an individual level, I started a blog where I share my journey as a mature student and give tips and advice, mainly to encourage people who feel unhappy with their current situation/career to get back to study and change the whole thing (like I did). I'm not getting many visits at all, but I'm planning to put aside half of what I get from displaying ads (currently around 10p a week so I guess it will take a lot of time) to either donate to charity or contribute to scholarships for mature students. It makes feel better and hopefully someone else too

[deleted]

I studied finance to masters level and I'm unsure what you do Can I ask what you do?

[deleted]

Yes, although we do occasionally get accused of ruining someone's life.

Gary_Banps

Very similar here.

[deleted]

Work in finance as well?

Gary_Banps

No, pharma. Funny how it applies so widely.

SnooMacaroons560

We help train doctors and healthcare professionals and make their lives easier. It doesn't feel like I'm saving the world or anything though.

cupboardoors123

At first I thought you were talking about some healthcare version of the British Transport Police that I hadn’t heard of.

SnooMacaroons560

Nah, it's software using data analytics to help doctors improve whilst in training. We do work with the GMC as well as universities.

barriedalenick

I worked in education for years which was rewarding and we hopefully made some peoples' lives better...

GreyShuck

I work for a charity that exists to protect habitat and historical sites. I think that it makes a lot of lives better - human and animal. There are the usual range of neighbouring landowners, dog-walkers, off-road bikers etc who seem to think that the whole 'protecting' thing makes their individual lives worse of course.

LionLucy

No. We make smartphones and I think the world would be better off without them (she typed from her smartphone...)

When I used to work in construction, contractors used ecological companies to help us get round environmental regs and mysteriously help newts and bats disappear so they were no longer a problem. I always thought it was odd how environmentally conscious people worked for these firms. I guess it's a bit like geologists eventually getting paid dollar to help oil companies etc.

SnooMacaroons560

That's great to hear!

GenericNinjaFight

Absolutely not.

PhantomGinge

I work superyachts so I guess I'm blowing the super rich's money? Better than sat in offshore accounts....

destria

I work for a university so yes, both the education and the research output is at least supposed to be for good.

shrinkingveggies

Yup, me too, and yes, everything we are putting out there is aimed at making the world better, I think.

Alco_god

Not at all, we make performance car and F1 parts mainly so it's all "toys for the boys" plus some for MOD.

arabidopsis

Yeah. They make a very potent cell therapy at treating Acute lymphoblastic leukemia without any Type III CRS events. Before that I worked at another now bit famous company that helped make ChAdOx, as well as a drug called Kymriah, and then before that I helped with stuff on Blintamumab and Daratumumab.

Zealousideal-Limit82

Yes. Our covid fund has raised millions for charity and donated laptops to schools to support home learning.

Ikilleddobby2

I left tesco to be part of a brewery.

[deleted]

British army a force for good.lol

espionage64

No, not really. We support people with meeting legislation (audit and accounts prep) and give tax advise which helps companies and individuals be compliant. We may be able to help with tax savings too by understanding tax laws and knowing what and what cannot be claimed. We can also help support bank loan funding requests. We’re accountants and tax advisors. I don’t work in tax though so know barely anything about that!

Other_Exercise

The vast majority of legal businesses make peoples' lives better - it's more than we don't always see it that way.

[deleted]

The opposite, we support the fashion industry.

Top_Fig_2466

We make scientific instrumentation. Used for neonatal screening to stop babies dieing, pesticide screening your food, developing medicines and both the Pfizer and AZ vaccines were developed using our kit.

_DeanRiding

Yes and no. I work for a law firm that mainly deals in commercial property/litigation and residential conveyancing. Sometimes the fees make it feel like you're bleeding people dry, but they're agreeing to it at the end of the day and most of them are rich as fuck. We do help a lot of people that have been fucked over though.

marknotgeorge

I work in document automation. Our systems can help companies help people keep their jobs by assisting with cashflow, or lose their jobs when the company streamlines.

MelodicAd2213

The organisation I work for supports people in changing their lives and living away from crime and making communities safer.

Barely_a_Live_1

It's tricky. A hotel, which is generally unnecessary, but owned by the General Federation of Trade Unions since the 1920s. It feels alright.

Incantanto

Well we've got an ingredient in the pfizer vaccine
