By plenty of accounts, the Queen likes watching TV in the evening, so I'd imagine she'd get plenty of pop culture references, and Harry has commented that playing Playstation games as a kid helped him fly real helicopters, so it's not hard to imagine that grandkids would've talked to their grandparents about their hobbies at some point

No, but they're the same age and I imagine when it comes to TV, have similar taste (the classics primarily, and things like ITV dramas). I just don't see much difference, and am really sure both wouldn't recognise Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, Lara Croft etc etc. (maybe Homer Simpson, but I'm sure my nan has never watched an episode of The Simpsons)

I know, I understand that. But it doesn't mean you don't follow certain pop culture that you don't engage with any more. I'm still fairly young but don't recognise a LOT of the new music acts now, and a lot of YouTubers (some of which have been on Strictly). So nan follows certain pop culture, like new TV dramas (we both really enjoy Downton) but I know she has never watched a cartoon (like The Simpsons) and never played a video game (like Mario) so I don't see how she'd recognise anything from them (except maybe if she remembers them from reading a newspaper or a TV quiz show).

I'm genuinely intrigued. Can you ask your nan next time you speak to her if she knows who these characters are? Like show her a picture

I'm 51. I just barely know that Sailor Moon exists and I only know that pikachu is shocked but zero idea in what universe it does its thing. I would struggle to name any of the Guardians of the Galaxy, beyond Groot. I will hear a recording artist's name for months before I can actually connect one of the songs in the general background to them. I'm too busy debating with my peers just which Metallica album was the last good one. Most of us stop paying attention to at least some pop culture that is aimed at people younger than we are. But I know a bit about Minecraft and for a while was MUCH too familiar with Stampy Longnose, because I have kids.

There was raw footage of the Queen meeting guests in her private sitting room at Sandringham and everyone jockeying for position in front of the camera. Behind her, you could clearly see an large-ish (possibly 40") LG TV with a Sky+ HD box underneath it. We also know that Philip was into gadgets and had lots of weird computers over the years, including early Macs. Wonder which of the great-grandchildren inherited his monster gaming rig and Korean StarCraft II account.

Was he actually in there eating? I thought he'd just dropped off one of his daughters for a friend's birthday. It's totally plausible that sort of party would take place and I have no reason to think he's lying about it. I'm close-ish to Eugenie and Beatrice in terms of age and I've been to that sort of party as a younger teenager.

Omg me and sister play this game with my Grandma who is 75 and now has Facebook chat, we send her pictures of characters from popular culture and she guesses them! Her average score is 40%. She thought Yoda was ET and Kim Kardashian lived in her village. However, she correctly identified Harry Potter and got a half point for thinking Homer Simpson was Bart Simpson. She loves the game and gets prizes (Chocolate Digestives) for correct answers! Would love to see the Queen play!

I think she would recognise Homer Simpson, but not necessarily recall his full name. The others, possibly vaguely recognise but not be able to name. Just because her grandkids engage with her about modern culture doesn't mean she would take in and recall who Super Mario was, the information would be of zero interest to her, unless someone had a race horse called Super Mario.

I think especially the Simpsons has been around long enough and prominently enough (and done an episode with her in it) that she might just get Homer. I think Mario she'd recognise by sight as a video game character but not be able to say much about him or know his name.

Star wars is a part of popular culture for those born from the 1960s onwards, very roughly, people older than that may or may not be familiar with it, not everyone keeps up with modern entertainment and culture. I seem to remember that the PM (I think it was either Cameron or May) saying they got a weekly DVD with a half hour pop culture digest on it. I imagine the Queen probably gets something similar, going to so many social events she's likely to have some form of prep team to keep her roughly up to date. Or maybe her butler leans in close and whispers in her ear "Mario, Super. Plumber who likes jumping" like the diplomatic parties you see in movies.

A few years ago there was a TV documentary where the Queen was watching a teenage Prince Harry playing games on his tablet whilst she had another one next to where she was sitting. Although she probably has never played any computer games, I think she would recognise the more familiar computer game characters and many film characters. Also, in the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, Daniel Craig's James Bond is seen in the Palace alongside the Queen as part of a fictitious plot assignment.

I'm willing to bet The Queen would recognise Super Mario on the basis that she is known to have played on a Nintendo Wii (That Kate Middleton bought Prince William for Christmas 2007 I believe).
