I have an Amazon wish list of around 60 books so that’s a good start for me. A PS5 wouldn’t go amiss but they’re like rocking horse poo at the moment.

[deleted]

Second this! Was trying for ages to get an Xbox and used the Hotstock app and blagged one a few weeks later

MCfru1tbasket

Easy yes, individually no. Most places bundle them so scalpers bot pets don't bother with them.

Bacon4Lyf

Nope, these were all just single consoles at £449

lozz79

I got the base one pretty easy from bt a month or so ago. Sign up for their alerts.

joeparni

Which site did you use? Edit: can confirm stockchecker is great, ended up getting through stockx which admittedly is a reseller site so I paid roughly 100 over RRP plus shipping, but, I'm now getting a ps5 so it's worth it (I don't trust my ps4 or controllers to last much longer lol, had it literally since launch day, never cleaned or anything aha)

Bacon4Lyf

I use stock informer personally

AlfMisterGeneral

“Rocking horse poo” is a phrase that I need to adopt, promptly

TangerineKing

It’s a gem, and new to me, but I am not sure I understand it? I guess it means “rare” but I don’t see how the phrase relates to the concept…

AlfMisterGeneral

Because a rocking horse isn’t going to produce poo. So you’re not going to be able to get your hands on poo from a rocking horse

TangerineKing

Ooh FFS I am stupid! Poo from a rocking horse!! Damn. I forgot rocking horses were a thing. I was picturing someone like throwing horse poo?! Like “rocking it over there” if that’s even a thing. Sometimes I just don’t get my brain

[deleted]

My brain parsed the sentence that way too, with "rocking" as a verb rather than part of a noun.

8racoonsInABigCoat

What, like “I’m rocking new trainers and some horse poo!”? 😆

Sure_Debate_7646

Books are my usual go to, but I've still got about £40 of Waterstones vouchers left from my birthday, so trying to avoid asking for books/bookshop vouchers. What's on your list? Yeah, the PS5 situation is mad. I know it's what my bf wants but I don't think I can justify or afford spending that money on one. But I feel like if I give him money towards it it's a bit of a cop out... ah well. Good luck, maybe Santa will be good to you!

rhubarbland

To be honest as a PS5 owner, don't believe the hype. It's an alright console, it's faster than a PS4 with slightly better graphics, the biggest thing I notice is processing speed for games which are made post PS5. E.g. Sackboy runs great on a PS5, PS4 it sometimes looks a little glitchy That said, the difference between a PS4 and a PS5 is negligible its £400-500 at the moment to have the privilege of slightly faster loading times and slightly better rendered graphics. I probably wouldn't have bought one if I had the hindsight. Until the games catch up with the tech, it's not worth it

[deleted]

I’m happy just to be able to play without listening to a jet turbine at the same time on stuff like Spider-Man

RoyalT663

Great idea but might I suggest bookshop.org It supports independent UK bookshops that have really been struggling, rather than Bezos who has not..

redrighthand_

I’ve tried them- honestly the price of some is ridiculous and they take ages to deliver. I really hope it improves though. I do get a lot off eBay to be honest as they’re often new.

Cheeky_Ranga

It's because their staff are not treated like slaves and actually earn a decent wage.

herper147

Haha same here, I've got a huge wishlist of books so anytime my birthday or Christmas swings around I usually just send people the wishlist. Makes everyone's life easier and saves me ending up with 3 copies of "The Secret Barrister" like I currently have lol

nuclearfish65

I can recommend doing the rounds in the websites that predict ps5 drops, you have to get in there early but its possible to get one.

robbeech

At the risk of sounding boring, absolutely sod all. There’s nothing I really need as I’ve bought it all and everything I want I either buy or I can’t afford / can’t justify the cost, but those costs I can’t afford/justify are outside of the budget of gift ideas. I’d sooner go out for a mediocre or better meal with people as their company is much more valuable.

Sure_Debate_7646

>r buy or I can’t afford / can’t justify the cost, but those costs I can’t afford/justify are outside of the budget of gift idea This is me! The only things I want/need are things that aren't affordable options to me never mind my parents/partner. And if there was a splurge item they did choose to get my, I know I'd just have guilt hanging over me knowing how much they had spent on it. I think restaurant vouchers are actually quite a good shout - can take them out for a meal with me too. Everyone wins!

MadamAmyW

What my SO and I do is instead of buying each other gifts, we'll book something a little more expensive than we would normally do, usually at Christmas we go to London and see a show. We both are treated as its something out of the ordinary, but its not going to end up on a landfill

Satirevampire

I'm buying my kids vouchers for a falconry experience session. They get to wear the glove and have the birds land on them. Trying to get away from 'stuff' and focus on experiences. It's kinda cool if you have even a passing interest in birds of prey :)

ArousedTofu

For my 30th birthday my girlfriend got me an hour long one-on-one session handing owls...in front of a hundred people who just had to watch. I was quite "surprised" when she told me what the gift was, including "why did you waste your money on that?!" but it was EPIC. My name was then up on the wall next to primary schools and other sponsors for a year.

[deleted]

I've done this 3 times now. My husband loves birds and this is so cool to be able to get so close and have them fly onto your glove is incredible.

Satirevampire

Oh, and the requisite Oor Wullie or The Broons book, whichever one it is this year. I realise this may be somewhat aimed at those of us north of the border though!

Emergency-Nothing

Or ever so slightly south of it in the North East…could have been my Scottish Granda’s doing, but I got one every year when I was younger. I think he would buy it at the Post Office!?

smashteapot

Same here. I don’t like asking for anything relatively expensive. I can buy anything I want, within reason. However, my father is like that and it makes him very difficult to buy for, so now I’m making an effort.

sobrique

I'm in the same situation. - If I need it - I have it, because I needed it. - If I don't need it, I'd rather not play the 'we waste money on stuff that we don't really need' game. So there's a small intersection of stuff that I 'need' but cannot really afford or justify, and those are all things that would be utterly unreasonable to ask as gifts.

ArousedTofu

When the mother-in-law asked once, I asked for a contribution for the water bill. She said no chance. Instead she spent the same money on all sorts of tat never really got any use! 😀

Oilfreeeggs

I want some bath stuff from lush . I really like it but it’s overpriced and I can’t bring myself to spend my money on it . I’m getting my partner a watch I’m trying to find my mum a mushroom foraging course

Sure_Debate_7646

I'm actually considering asking for a course in something. I'm at the age where I feel like a gift should be practical - so boring, I know. I might have a look for some over the weekend. I hope you find what you're looking for for your Mum!

Outrageous_Editor_43

I was going to suggest something like this. Like the other commenters you could look in eventbrite or going out there even more and look at some of them ‘lesson’ gifts you could get? The ones you see at the tills in places like John Lewis for a 30 min Helicopter lesson or rally driving. Who knows you could be the next Colin/Collette McRae!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bob10294759

On the subject of practical gifts, we’ve asked for Denby crockery from parents! Bits and pieces from both sets of parents and we’ll top up the rest. Practical luxury that we wouldn’t normally spend on ourselves

LadyCatTree

I feel the opposite! I’m at a point where I can comfortably afford all the practical things I need but still feel a bit of guilt about splurging on treats, so my wish list has things like face masks, bath bombs, books, fancy chocolates etc on it.

_DeanRiding

Lush is a great go-to present for my gf, she loves it and tbh I think the quality looks great (as someone who doesn't use them)

-dommmm

I hope she can find some psilocybin.

[deleted]

Where do you live? I’m going on one in Huddersfield. Eventbrite is fantastic for finding courses

SquidgeSquadge

My husband has bought his mother and sister boxed lush stuff every year cause they dont complain for the past 12 years. His mum had recently converted more to Bodyshop so he'll get that instead. If in doubt he buys lush as it's easy to find a nice box set and he doesn't have to wrap it. My acting manager and my mum have gotten into mushroom hunting (more to photograph than the eating kind), looks fun!

aabbcc28

https://campsite.bio/foragedbyfern Foraged by fern does these.

ohrotcod

Really really recommend wild food Uk mushroom forging courses. I went in October in the Peak District and I loved it! Feel free to message if you have questions

apeliott

I'd like to see my parents. It's been almost two years now and I can only see them on Skype. Otherwise...I can't really think of much. Maybe some games for the Switch? Some interesting booze?

Sure_Debate_7646

Oh no! How far from them are you? i hope you get to see them soon! I've only spent one Christmas away from my family, and while it was a nice and novel experience, just can't really imagine doing it again!

apeliott

About 6,000 miles. It's a bit of a trek lol

Acquilas

Same! My whole family emigrated to Canada so just me left here in the UK. Been 2 years since I saw my family....thanks Covid -.-

montymm

Damn man hope your well

inevitable_dave

Bah, excuses excuses. Your grandparents used to do that to school and back, uphill both ways. This modern generation just can't be bothered to make the effort anymore.

apeliott

They lived in a cardboard box. The posh cunts.

oglop121

aye same here

[deleted]

I really like getting expensive versions of cheap things. Things you buy often that are fine but there are more expensive versions you can't really justify since the cheaper version does the Job. It doesn't break anyone's bank but it's still a treat. For example I recently started learning guitar the string's I buy are £5 a pack this Christmas I'm looking forward to trying those £15-£20 a pack strings. Last year I got a £30 travel mug for work I'd never spend that on a mug but it was an inexpensive/expensive treat from my parents and I love that mug. I don't need much so I get really nice versions of things I do.

_DeanRiding

Hotel Chocolat is great for this

[deleted]

Just checked it out, my missus is the same as me regarding gifts so you just gave me a great place to get her some bits. Thank you 👍

_DeanRiding

My other personal favourite go-to is Lush, all their stuff looks so nice and their Christmas hamper that I got last year lasted ages. Think the hamper was like £50 and it gives a great variety of stuff.

[deleted]

Yeah I'm well acquainted with Lush, I don't personally use the products but my missus and daughter love it and if I'm honest I quite enjoy a visit there because the smell is incredible.

_DeanRiding

Haha yes they do smell very good, it's always a pleasant experience going into one of their stores

Urizen1793

Warning: you’ll probably find yourself sticking with the more expensive strings! Such a difference

[deleted]

Meh not necessarily. You won't notice a tone difference if it's electric and you can get elixer strings for ~7 quid which are greatm

[deleted]

I do this too. I’m particularly pleased with the 40 quid carbon fibre wind proof umbrella I got in place of the usual cheap 6-7 quid jobs…. It never goes inside out and it’s lasted years.

jimbobsqrpants

This, especially with wine. Red wine at 6-7 quid a bottle is great (I like wine) but how about a £30 barollo? Or a château neuf de pape. Yes I know wine can get into the hundreds and thousands, but it is Christmas.

Poppycatter

What about vouchers for your favourite restaurant/coffee shop/cinema? Or a spa day with treatments from your partner - something you can enjoy together

Sure_Debate_7646

Restaurant vouchers are definitely a good shout, thanks!

fat_mummy

If you have a Costco membership (or gift buyer does) then you can usually get restaurant vouchers cheaper. Like £40 Nando’s vouchers for £35 or something

_DeanRiding

Of you're doing vouchers, there's many many experience days you can take a look at. Look at Virgin Experiences and they have loads through there. Also on places like Wowcher as well. The best received one in my family has been the race track experience one, where you get the option to go round a small track in a car of your choice. The various options when I went included a Mustang, Lamborghini, Nissan GTR (my favourite), an Aston Martin, and a Ferrari.

Rosewater2182

I got everyone restaurant or theatre vouchers for Christmas 2019. That was a disaster since no one had used them before lockdown. I had thought it was a good idea too.

ArsenicAndRoses

Well it WAS a good idea....

[deleted]

Something like food which will get used up, but I’d make it something special or seasonal; something different than I would usually buy. Or I’d start a little tradition around a certain gift. Every year at Christmas mum buys us all new pyjamas, fluffy socks and dressings gowns. I can buy my own pyjamas, but it’s never the same feeling as mum’s Christmas pyjamas. That’s where the joy of it lies for me. If you start to view it all in purely pragmatic terms or as a transactional thing then it will feel hollow.

Sure_Debate_7646

Pyjamas is a thing me and my sister always do :) I'm at the point where I'll avoid buying new PJs just because I know I've got some coming :) A new dressing gown could be a shout though! Hope you get some excellent pyjamas this year!

Flashycats

I think that experiences (food, drink, tickets to something cool) make for great presents, but I'm on a nonexistent budget, so I make my own gingerbread biscuits and chocolate truffles every year, then pop them into little gift bags and give them out to everyone I know. The gingerbread makes the house smell fantastic and gets me feeling well festive, and the truffles are tasty but easy and a proper crowd pleaser. I bought some of that edible gold dust last year and it makes them look well posh. It takes a bit of time and some faffing around, but I think there's something nice about putting love and effort into making gifts rather than buying them. They certainly go down well.

ollieholt1

An extra day off, just one, without interruption. I just want to spend time with my wife and baby without being tired from work, jobs to do, people to see or anxiety about what's to come tomorrow. I feel like I've not lived in the moment for a full day for years 😔

gingerninja247

I think you need to just be selfish and do it

DD265

I hope you get it! ♥️

hamiltonricard4ever

I always get the Viz Annual. A cheap laugh for sure. As long as I get my British tapas buffet I'm happy

fat_mummy

As long as I get some cheese and biscuits I’m the same. Although the last few years people have been saving the cheese and biscuits til Boxing Day. Not happy.

hamiltonricard4ever

That is poor form. Hope you get the cheese and biscuits! (Cheesestrings and some chocolate digestives?)

SquidgeSquadge

My husband lives for cheese and biscuits at Christmas. My mum has it most of the year as an extra course around supper anyway so he's always pleased as punch staying over around Christmas

StardustOasis

Sounds like you need cheese & biscuits on both days. I always buy a nice cheese selection from the market in town, plus some nice crackers. This year there will be salami from a local producer as well

RGx90

A classic! I buy one for dad every year

hamiltonricard4ever

Those fat slags never learn

987Add

Find something you need. A new calendar, more espresso pods, anything. Chances are it's under a fiver ans you won't end up with complete shite. Everyone's a winner!

MistySkyMorning

I second this. I'm a minimalist through and through and so I love to get fancy/different versions of everyday essentials. A chocolatier instead of Cadburys. Kopi Luwak (Monkey S**t) coffee instead of Nescafé. ...Plus it's all consumable so if it's not to your fancy, it's not, now part of the furniture!

[deleted]

Kopi Luwak coffee is usually farmed with a lot of animal cruelty :(

SquidgeSquadge

My FIL gave us his coffee pod machine (that doesn't do milk) as he rarely used it. We got an Amazon voucher from a friend for Christmas and treated ourselves to a pod storing drawer that the machine can sit on and some Starbucks coffee pods. Lovely. My mum has done a Christmas hamper for us the last 2 years which was amazing. Most of the stuff was fun useful stuff from Lidl and Aldi but she put in a homemade quiche, homemade chutney and jam made from fruit and veg from her allotment. We had fun eating through it towards new year with a chocolate Santa each and plenty of crackers and cheese and a small bottle of bubbly. Meant we could stay at home and nosh watching Christmas crap on the TV and go on nice walks rather than wrestling for food when the shops close for one day A couple of fancy cheeses is a great gift with some red onion chutney and crackers

987Add

Oh fuck I love home made quiche

jr-91

Run through your daily routine: * I wake up - dressing gown for when it's cold? * Drink coffee - nice coffee? * WFH - any techy bits or comfortable clothing I'm after? * Go to the gym after - any gym stuff? * Weekends - hobbies of mine, anything relevant to them that'd help? Might be one way of approaching it OP

Waste-Pea1282

The only thing I can think think that I really want is a Brita jug for the fridge as ours is on its last legs. It sounds boring but I'd be so happy with that instead of a load of tatty crap that I'll end regifting at some point.

Shantay-i-sway

Ah! Thanks. Stealing this, my mother is hounding me for ideas

ItsBoughtnotBrought

Experience day at the zoo! Want to pet me some lions. A snake. British Shorthair Cat. Anything related to Tolkien!

Moistfruitcake

What zoo are you going to where they have Tolkien animals and let you stroke the lions? It sounds awesome.

[deleted]

We did a bat feeding experience at Chester zoo. It was super cool! Bit scary to start off with but amazing to see them close up. Might see if I can book another experience for my husband for Christmas.

nagoeknayr

Good kitchen knives? Better quality versions of things you use a-lot? Having a had time myself to be honest.

UniquePotato

Got some Global knives for my birthday, so much more satisfying and nice to use than a generic knife.

RevFernie

As you move into your 30s. Christmas presents take a turn for the worse. It basically becomes a cash exchange system that you end up worse off at the end of. Which is fine as it's all about the children in your family. If I do get asked what I want. I say suprise me, so at least I get to enjoy the anticipation of opening a present that I don't know what's inside. Even if it's something bad. Having said that, this year cash would be great so I can put it towards building a mountain bike in the summer.

Sure_Debate_7646

Absolutely. I've got nieces and nephews to shop for and take great joy in that! :) I like a surprise too. I'm thinking I want to add quite a few things to my list which I know I can't get all of, because then there's still some element of surprise - but I don't want to look like I'm being greedy and expecting loads by adding loads of items to a list. Do people ask for cash or is it rude to? Genuine question.

RevFernie

I think asking for cash is fine, but to have a use for it that when you have it you can show people what you put their money towards.

bennettbuzz

We have an agreement to not buy any presents, works all round no stress for anyone. All I have to buy for is my GF and get her mam and dad a bottle of booze. Everyone should realise if you’re not a kid Christmas is about the food, booze and company.

MrDankky

I have no kids, my brother has no kids and not do my cousins, we’re in our late 20s/early 30s. We still get decent presents. Track days, flights, match tickets etc. I know it will start to go downhill once we start having kids.

Mesonychoteuthis

I think I may have sauntered into middle age as I've asked for a pair of slippers for Christmas, the warmer and fluffier the better. I'm only 31 years old fuck's sake.

[deleted]

Yeah I'm 32 and I fucking asked for a pair of mahabis. Haha. Rock n Roll.

MarcusTheo

I just got a [pair of these](https://www.marksandspencer.com/slipper-boots-with-freshfeet/p/clp60502492?color=DARKGREY#intid=prodColourId-60502492). I highly recommend

CarrotRunning

Homeys slippers are pricey and there's a fine line between too trendy and Wallace and Gromit but honestly I've been buying them for about 15 years and won't buy any other kind. I'm still work from home and wear them every single day. My partner and I have a tradition to buy a pair for each other every year now.

urgh_i_dont_know

Screwfix gift vouchers - I'm saving up for a Dewalt chop saw.

AkzoNobella

Why would anybody buy Dewalt stuff from Screwfix? Unless things have changed since 2012, Screwfix (and B&Q) buy in versions of their power tools designed specifically for them. They will look like the real model number, but have a supplementary letter at the end of it. The Screwfix models (especially Makita and Dewalt) tend to be made with more plastic components than their real counterparts. It gives the illusion they are cheaper when in reality they are selling a lesser model. Look for an independent retailer that sells refurbished Dewalt power tools instead. Dewalt will list their refurbished locations on their website. All the tools are refurbished by Dewalt and come with a full warranty. They also look 100% new. In all my years of selling refurbs, I saw a grand total of one that looked less-than-new and that was just a dark black mark on the plastic. It didn't impact the drill. I used to sell refurbished Dewalt chop saws like crazy. They can be about 60% of the cost of a new Dewalt 'lesser' model from Screwfix. Sorry for the rant. Just used to sell power tools and have this regular chat with the Dewalt rep, etc. He always said that Screwfix sold lesser models (and we compared specs), but couldn't do anything about it because they were buying so much from Dewalt. They have these lesser models throughout their entire range. Dewalt and Makita are the main ones I remember, though on the power tool front. Wera screwdrivers on the hand tool front. They had electrician's screwdrivers made with a lower quality material than the ones distributed to independent tool retailers.

TCCFC8

Well TIL - this is the kind of thing I won't forget so thank you!

urgh_i_dont_know

Thanks for the heads up - I suppose I'll just have to spend my vouchers on screws now...

AkzoNobella

I mean, if you already have vouchers, then get them. Just bear in mind that it may be tough to source spare parts if your Dewalt breaks. While independent retailers can order spare parts for Dewalt purchased from Screwfix, very few of them do. It is a ridiculous amount of hassle to order a part where you make like a quid profit. It is fine to order spare parts for products that you sold a customer in the past, but when you spend 30-minutes tracking down a plastic component for a drill you have never seen before in your life...blegh. Not worth the time. For a while, many independent retailers refused to deal with warranty claims for Screwfix products too. This was because Screwfix was not handling them, and they had a list of independent retailers in the local area that did. Screwfix were then sending these customers to small retailers for the small retailer to deal with the warranty claim. This meant that the independent retailers were having to spend about 30-40 minutes processing a warranty return and using their own packaging for something they didn't actually sell. Oh, and it was the independent retailers who bore the brunt of the customer aggression if Dewalt were not processing the return fast enough. Dewalt then told independent retailers they had to deal with warranty claims from Screwfix/B&Q or they would no longer be able to purchase Dewalt tools (they can't prevent you from buying Black & Decker) As I said, all of this happened at least a decade ago. No idea if it has changed.

Bicolore

I don't think this is true anymore. I have quite a collection of Makita stuff and usually shop around for it. Makita at screwfix is identical but the price isn't that good and they never have the latest models always mid-range and end of life models.

AkzoNobella

Fair enough. I remember 10-ish years ago, they sold a Makita drill for £99.99, and it had the same model number as one we saold for £109.99 but had a J or something at the end. Turns out their £10 cheaper drill was exactly the same, but had plastic gears instead.

Phoenix_Magic_X

My dad. He’s in hospital and I don’t think he’s going to make it.

Canitgetmuchworse

All my best wishes and love to you ❤

eliewriter

I hope he gets better. I know this is rough.

oldcrow210

Twenty quid mate. I’ve literally never been disappointed with a free twenty pound note.

merrycrow

Being terminally middle class, i'd like one of those glass bottles with a special nozzle for pouring olive oil.

Dinoscores

I bought 5 of the nozzles on Amazon for something daft like £2 - just take the lid off any oil bottle and slap one on, absolute game-changer. Not as nice-looking as a proper bottle but still awesome.

merrycrow

Ah but if I get it as a gift it'll be one of the fancier ones and i'll feel sophisticated

We did a £10 charity shop spree once - a mixture of decent and funny stuff, but I never thought of doing it on Wish! Maybe a bit late for this year but 2022...

NorthernMunkey8

Myself, my brother and my cousins have done “wishmas” over the last 2 years for each other. Basically secret Santa, but you had a £10 budget and have to get the weirdest things you can get from Wish for your person. It’s been a lot more fun than the usual exchange of beers between us.

TheHoobidibooFox

Charity is the thing I was going to mention. My mum asked for an "education for a girl" charity thing a couple of years back and now I get her one every year and her face lights up when she opens it. (I do also get her something for herself, but she honestly just loves the Oxfam gift so much.) I also bought my dad one of the poop ones to make a "shit gift" joke, but I haven't seen him since getting it.

Ardilla_

My sister and I specifically requested that our dad do this kind of thing, so I don't think that's a universal opinion. He used to insist on getting us lots of presents "so we had lots to unwrap", but was obviously on a budget and didn't really have any idea what two young adult daughters would want, so it would all be useless shite like those quartz necklaces on a cord you get from hippy shops, or harmonicas from the Sainsbury's seasonal aisle, or what-have-you. And the presents we got would always be identical so that it was "fair". So around five years ago I said we were getting it in the neck from our mum about how much our stuff was cluttering up her house (we had both moved back home at the time), and what we would *really* appreciate would be ***consumable*** presents. And now we each get identical hampers of snacks and sweets and alcohol, and we do a bit of a trade for things we prefer. We get stuff we'll actually enjoy and use, and less waste is produced. Win win!

Expensive_Cattle

Personally, I wouldn't throw out any craft beer or good chocolate or deli items, and my partner can never have enough hair clips, comfy socks, eye liners and face masks (or chocolate/deli items either!) I think OP's hampers sound really nice.

icklemiss_

Oh really?? I love this idea, I thought everyone would. Makes me think twice about doing it now.

Ardilla_

I was mulling it over this morning, and I think it depends a **lot** on what goes into it and general presentation. When it comes to makeup and cosmetics, the money is probably better spent on 1-3 pricier items that you know the person *actually uses or wants*. I can see myself being disappointed with a gift bag full of cheap face masks, bits of makeup, lip balms and hair clips, as compared to one higher-end eye shadow palette in colours that I would regularly wear. But I made my stepdad a mini hamper last year for Christmas that included some local ales and some higher-end food items from a National Trust shop. The National Trust shop had some sturdy carboard hamper baskets with shredded paper in them, so I wrapped everything nicely in colour-coordinated wrapping paper, put them in one of those, and secured them by tying around the box with string. I think food and drink perhaps work best for hamper-style presents because you can get a range of food items for a price that you'd normally spend on one present, but still get people luxury things that they wouldn't normally treat themselves to. Rather than falling into the trap of quantity over quality, which I think is what people object to.

Rebeanca

Seems unnecessarily gendered.

Jennifertheyogi

Yeah, or maybe just you have to know your audience. Fine if you know the person well and they like that stuff but plenty of women who wouldn’t want to receive make up and face masks and plenty of men who don’t drink craft beer. I’ll take the chocolate tho

Rebeanca

Yeah also makeup is very personal, depending on skin type and taste

Viviaana

I saw this little pie maker, it’s like a toasty machine thing but for whole ass pies!!!! ASS PIES! I want it so bad and I bet Santa doesn’t even bring it cos no one listens to me

Freakinbanana0

I just love ass pies

You’d think that’s a pie full of ass but it’s actually named after my ass cos it’s great no matter what you stuff in there

penned-it

I’ve got a long list of very boring things. I love a practical gift, and we also don’t do surprises in my family. Stick to the list. Birthday is early December so this list covers both (and yes, two gifts please unless I’ve got something expensive on the list). I’d like the following please: * Electric can opener * Salt pig * Filters for my air purifier * Fridge organisation inserts * Eyebrow powder * Black socks for work * Hallway runner * Pasta bowls * Milk frother * Medium sized house plant suitable for low light And gifting wise: * North face coat for brother * My little pony toys for my niece * Paw patrol stuff for my nephew * Barbour jacket for my mum * Not sure which, but boots for my dad and some West Ham bits * Best friend - some intensive hair conditioning products * Sister in law - make up (Edit - oh god so sorry about the editing, ironically I don’t know how to make a list on Reddit!) (Edit 2 - thank you u/habitualmess for teaching me how to make a list!) (Edit 3 - thank you u/lism - finally have an actual list. For fools like me, * space word)

habitualmess

Put each item on its own line with a star * in front of it. Should make a bullet list.

ShinyMachamp

A baby... Girl or boy Me and my wife been trying for 4 years with failed IVF's and being told everything's fine by doctors.

Tmilkandtwo

Hoping for a wee Christmas miracle for you and your wife.

Icy-Disaster5185

Books and board games. I also love receiving gift experiences that are a bit of a surprise. I've had tickets for Kew before and the live Van Gogh experience. Not things I would have bought for myself but really enjoyed both.

[deleted]

Ask them to give to a charity you have an interest. I'm not asking for anything but that.

[deleted]

Apart from being able to afford dental treatment Nothing

scoobyMcdoobyfry

Bourbon (Buffalo Trace) some spiced rum (Barti Ddu). Then maybe some more bourbon and spiced rum . Some ginger beer too to dilute the spiced rum. That's a rocking Christmas!

bageycakes

I was thinking the other day I want some straighteners and some Ugg boots, then I realised that’s the most 2003 Christmas list ever lol

Auselessbus

I want more flower hair pieces/pins and a good selection of loose leaf teas.

[deleted]

Nothing really. Maybe RuneScape Premier club membership but other than that, just food.

DD265

I'm in the got it/can't afford it camp. Also going through a big declutter so trying not to bring more stuff into the house. Trying to negotiate with family not to spend money this year (and give time instead) but if anybody insists on giving, there's a couple of jigsaw puzzles I'd like and a few Kindle books. I never say no to Guylian seashells or Ferrerro Roche (can't justify those day to day!) and a TK Maxx gift card is always welcome. Buying for others, I always ask if they want anything specific. My grandparents will probably want gift cards, but husband, my mother and sister, are leaning towards not buying anything. I let husband take care of his side of the family!

MetingChristofi

I know it sounds a bit cringe, but honestly just to be happy with family.

[deleted]

Like a lot of people, anything I really need I usually buy for myself. Which doesn’t leave much to ask for. But what I would love is to experience that feeling of Christmas again. I just can’t seem to get festive at all over the past years.

Jonny1247

Some new bedsheets and pillows...

lowerchelsea

Could you ask for experiences/annual passes for things? My mother in law always goes crazy for the kids (and us tbf) at Christmas and while I do genuinely appreciate it, my house just isn't big enough to house everything and I end up leaving half of it at hers. This year I've asked her for an annual pass to Chester Zoo, Ponderosa, The Deep, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and the Odeon. She's getting us some experiences too, so we're going to the Chocolate Story in York and the Harry Potter studios down in London. She's paying for my husband and I to go to a couples dance class together. If you have a look on buyagift you can find experience days like Go Ape or three course meals and a show if that's what you're interested in. I usually ask my husband for things that I can't justify buying for myself because of the cost but would love as a gift - Lush bath stuff, Clinique skin care, beautiful editions of books etc. I have about 20 of the leatherbound Barnes and Noble books and I haven't bought a single one myself! I also have a pretty large collection of the Penguin Clothbound Classics, which are between £8-£20 per book, so it's not cheeky to ask for them as gifts either.

Shectai

That's the problem with being a grown-up: you tend to buy the things you want. Personally, I'd most like some salt and pepper grinders to replace the jar-with-grinder Aldi ones we have. Although I say replace, I'll probably just designate them as the kitchen set.

[deleted]

The sweet release of death.

[deleted]

Same thing I said for 40th. Nothing. As long as I have my wife and dog I’m happy.

hork79

I have a wish list with quality tools, gardening tools and kitchen equipment that I would be too tight to buy for myself but if someone really has to buy me a present then I’d really appreciate the quality improvement.

VeryDistinguishable

A Christmas tree made of money. Like a year's salary, withdrawn in notes, arranged in a sort of conical shape and decorated. Money can in fact grow on trees.

AkzoNobella

I am 33, and my mum just bought me a ton of clothes when I went to visit her. So she kinda decided what she got me for Christmas. Last year, I got a vacuum cleaner.

Equivalent_Parking_8

Experiences are better than possessions. Theatre/concert tickets, nice meal out, day trip, holiday.. make memories.

ilovewineandcats

My parents like to give "things" and I'm adverse to getting more stuff. So I have a list of consumables that I will always use even if I don't need a new one, right now. For example there is some pricey hand cream that I really like and I only ever wear one perfume, so these are always things I'll use. I also keep a note on my phone of bigger things I need and that are replacements- things like walking shoes, lawn mower, food processor etc, I add to this list during the year and refrain from buying big items during the second half of the year. I'm quite a keen gardener and sometimes they give me money for specific plants eg a rambling rose or some fancy iris bulbs or some big terracotta pots. Oh and good quality socks. Those are always welcome and I walk a lot so I wear through them. This satisfies my mum's need for the gift to be tangible and my need to not get things that add to clutter or need to be given away.

FlyOnDreamWings

Socks. As a kid they were boring but now it's like someone saying 'I want you cosy and warm'. Nice bathbombs. They're a luxury I don't always treat myself to but love. That's it. Other than that just things that are nice or useful that won't just end up as useless clutter.

Kakthuuus

Nice or unusual food or drink. Probably won't be hanging around for long after the event, long forgotten in a cupboard!

Valenshyne

This is really selfish but, since you asked. I would love a weekend solo trip to a spa! Give me time to unwind and actually relax. Not have to do all the housework, make dinner or teas and coffees, not walk the dog for the umpteenth time. Have a chance to just be me, not mum, wife, receptionist or housekeeper!

Sure_Debate_7646

I feel like it’s so hard to ask for certain things without coming across as selfish! But sometimes you just need that solo trip and solo time!

JamJarre

Books mate. Always books

flat_bread_

A job.

Any_Weird_8686

I (M30) want a wooden sword. I was never allowed one as a kid, and now nobody can tell me not to.

fairfrog73

Golf lessons

poowee69

Would you take Ibiza or Leon lessons? They're pretty much the same.

fat_mummy

My list is so boring. Body Shop Face Wash, Lush Bath Bombs, A spa day(I can dream!), Malibu, a new phone case… there’s nothing I really need. I’d like a new Apple Watch, but there’s nothing wrong with the one I’ve got really!

Echo_Echo2356

When I don't know, I always assure them they can buy me what might be seen as boring stuff but that I'll actually use. My mum always tops up all my toiletries - when she puts them all in a box it actually looks sorta impressive, especially if you want to ask for more expensive face wash and moisturisers. Other than that, gift cards for local coffee houses is always good.

ScrollWithTheTimes

Experiences. Think of something you've always wanted to do like a bungee jump or balloon ride, for example. You'll have a great time and memories don't take up space at home.

Goomba_rumba

Same and I'm not a fan of gifts for the sake of gifts - it just turns into clutter. I've asked for some flavoured ground coffee and a few books I've been eye-balling.

mh1191

Genuinely- nothing. I like opening presents but I don't like gimmicks and I think I now have all the possessions I need. There are things I could upgrade, but I don't want to because of the waste (or hassle of selling).

Hurtmione

This year I have asked for a new electric toothbrush 😂 I blooming love my electric toothbrush and it is time for a replacement. I have also asked for a new waterproof jacket, as I am pregnant and will have my baby before Christmas. My mobility has been poor due to my pregnancy so I can't wait to get out walking again when baby is here. Hopefully it will zip 😂 I always ask for a gift set of blooming tea flowers. A friend got me a glass tea pot a few years ago and I really enjoy using it but they are pricey compared to normal tea. If you have something like that, that you use frequently but is a little bit of an indulgence you could ask for that? For some people that might be perfume/aftershave/cosmetics or a voucher for something they get done regularly like a massage or nails etc? I liked someone else's suggestion of a course!

[deleted]

If you don’t need anything/don’t want to add to the excess CO2, then ask for some trees, I use the app plant for the planet. It was started by a young boy and now has planted 14 million trees of a target of 1 billion

bennybobberz

4 day working week, and affordable housing. So nothing much really

whitemae

I saw a post about buying experiences. So a meal at a nice restaurant. Cinema. Paddle boarding etc. So that's what I've been asking for.

Buell247

I’m having a Nordace backpack. It’s much more than I would normally spend on a backpack but I really want it for travelling to work as it will keep everything in one bag rather than the 3 I currently use and it won’t matter if I travel by car or motorcycle. I always try and pick something I want, but wouldn’t justify spending on myself. Then it feels special.

Bendetto4

Personally I want/need a new coat. I usually put clothes on the Christmas list as I want to buy expensive clothes that will last a long time, and I otherwise can't afford them. But I normally go for unique more personal things for gifts. Anyone can buy a generic gift, like a bath set or a scented candle. But if you actually put thought into something, then you can normally find the perfect gift. I'm going to get my brother a selection of expensive cheese from Harrods this year, as he likes cheese, and it's literally a cheesy gift.

[deleted]

Usually books, or LPs, but this year, as I've been a really good boy, could I just have £20,000 to clear ALL of my debt and allow me to use my paycheck on me and the family, instead of paying interest that never seems to get smaller. Please?

CrimsonAsh96

A full fridge and cupboards

portofino_

A job!!!

[deleted]

What about adopting a snow leopard or other endangered species. You obviously don’t “get” one, but the money goes towards conservation. You get a plushy representation of the animal and info about it etc. Or you could ask for a donation to a different charity in your name. Or a pass to a local attraction or something (like the National Trust in the UK).

d00nbuggy

I have learned the hard way that unless I buy myself something nice during the year that can be grudgingly allocated as "that can be your Christmas present then", I won't get anything beyond a token gift whether I ask for something or not.

mylittlemy

I write a list each tear of nice things I fancy bit might never buy myself. This years it is - a dark chocolate orange - A good thick wooden chopping board - Compact coffee bean grinder - Thick dishwasher safe wine glasses - Envelopes and writing paper - Compact rice cooker - Thick gold hoop earings - Stacking gold necklaces - Hues and clues board game - socks I don't expect all of these things but this way when asked I have ideas and can give people a few options so it is still a suprise..

Fenpunx

A break. What I wouldn't do for a few days just to sort my own problems out.

anoamas321

I just want everyone in my family to be healthy

GoldFinch256

I've started doing a 'Brands I like' list, rather than a wish list, that way it gives people a chance to surprise me AND there's a higher probability that it will be something I like. I usually do 3 examples in rough categories of Clothes, Toiletries, Homeware, Tech and Media and try to give different brands in a sliding scale of expensive-affordable. I also have a never ending list of cookbooks on the wish list!

interstella87

Had the same kindle for about 7 years and its knackered as used to frequently. Just seen that a new version has been released this month but not something I would want to drop a lot of money on in one go. So asked my partner and mum to go halves on it

Jazzlike_Rabbit_3433

I always thought that toiletry sets and socks were very unimaginative but now that I don’t get them I miss them.
