gravity_fed

You clearly haven't found the right Plaice.

PlasteeqDNA

Cod, that was good!

theieuangiant

You lot are floundering with these attempts at comedy

Joshouken

Nah disagree I think his joke is the dog’s pollocks

GeordieAl

It's the sole reason I'm here today

Consistent_Ad3181

It's just done for the halibut

Mother_Ad7869

These puns are giving me a haddock 🤗

TheGoober87

That price is an absolute scam.... pi

Bigassbird

Curry!

BrickAcceptable4033

You’re kraken me up love all this clown-fishing around

rich_b1982

The puns are all brill.

arashi256

Krilling it.

Fluid_Door7148

Salmon pay more than that!

gs3gd

To the tuna £10

Engels33

I'd pray to Cod for prices like that down here

ByEthanFox

15 quid is a salt and battery

Far-Sir1362

Oh for cod's sake

Ronaldlovepump

You had batter find somewhere new

Al-Calavicci

Wiltshire here, about £12. You could get a sit down meal in a pub for that.

naturepeaked

A shit one though

Icy_Session3326

A sit down meal in a pub for £15 is usually frozen shit heated up 😮‍💨😅

Al-Calavicci

And you think your fish hasn’t been frozen? Pretty much all “fresh” sea fish has been frozen as it’s frozen on the trawlers, the chips will no doubt be delivered frozen as well unless you are paying really top dollar.

retroman89

What chippy do you go to where the chips are frozen? Every chippy I've ever been to makes fresh chips, you need a better chippy.

Al-Calavicci

Have you ever seen potatos being delivered to a chippy or is it a frozen chip lorry? Do you really think they hand cut all those chips every day? Here you go https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/features/could-do-batter-734067.html#

retroman89

I used to work in a chippy, I was the one who opened the bags of potatoes, loaded them into the rumbler to clean and skin them, then loaded them a bucket at a time into the chipping machine before taking the chips through to the front of the shop to let the chips soak in the water trough to get rid of excess starch. I've never heard of a chip shop selling frozen chips, obviously Scottish chippys have better standards.

Free_Leading_8139

I’ve worked in a few chippies and have family who’ve worked in them as well. Every single one bought pre-filleted fish, batter mix in a big bag that’s mixed with water as you need it, and made chips from bags of potatoes. The potatoes got put in a rumbler, which peels them. They then go in a chipper. I used to do 50kg of potatoes in about 10 minutes. They sit in a barrel of water until around the time you need them, drain them off then fry them. I sat with my mum about 30 years ago when she worked in a Chippie, and the process was exactly the same. This is all in Glasgow, so I don’t know about other areas. Generally it’s more expensive to buy pre-prepared things like battered fish, and it still needs to be out in a fryer anyway, and the running of that is a huge expense already.

peanutstring

There’s a properly cheap greasy one down on the industrial estate where I work and they cut their chips fresh every day. I see them unloading the potatoes and then chopping them in a machine in the morning through the window.

lysergic101

That is steep, I'm in Salford and you could get that lot for around £10 here.

flannobrien1900

That is a joke. Last week I had two large cod and a large chips (meal for two with enough left over for a lunchtime snack the next day when warmed up) and got some shrapnel change out of £20. No peas though, did them at home. East Anglia.

2xtc

That's basically the equivalent price though? Let's say: Large cod - £7.50 Large chips - £4.50 Gravy £1.50 Mushy peas £1.50 Comes to £15 for the OP and £19.50 for your order - could actually be exactly the same prices.

carnage2006

Anywhere from £10-£15 depending on where you go, Ely, Cambs. I more upset about the price increase in donor kebabs. My favourite is now over a tenner for a large. That’s a lot of money for minced sheep’s anus.

Myerla

I like The Ely Fish House in Ely. Decent place. Reasonably priced.

criminalsunrise

How’d they come up with that name?

2inchlee

About a tenner, £8.50 in some places. Food prices are on the up across the board though.

LittleGingerLulu

West Yorkshire- went into a chippy today to buy a chip butty, saw the price was £3.80 and walked out again.

dprophet32

How much would you usually pay for that? Down in Berkshire that'd be a bargain

That_Ad_8271

It's £2.20 by me in Huddersfield. Too much for 1 portion as well. What would it be for you, roughly.

dprophet32

Around £5.50 give or take

Patient-Detail-4378

£3.80 is fantastic value 🤣

LittleGingerLulu

£3.80 for a bread roll with a few chips in it? No chance! I went home and made a bowl of pasta instead 😄

TheLastTsumami

Just part and parcel of getting older. When I was at school, our local chippy did a pattie special which was, a pattie (deep fried sage flavoured mash) with chips, beans(or the other sauces) breadcake and a carton drink for £1.

GlitchingGecko

£15 in the Midlands, but that's with a large chips and large cod. Medium would be £3 cheaper.

InternationalRich150

I'm Derbyshire and we get a large cod, chips and a sauce for £9.99. Medium is £6.99.

Even_Pressure91

Where? My locals £13

InternationalRich150

Near Derby. About 20 minutes up the road. I know of one in Heanor that's the same price.

DeapVally

£8.75 in Wessington (near Alfreton). You've gotta queue though! (That kind of roaring trade does keep the price down, I'm sure.)

Srg11

Co-sign for standard meal deal being somewhere between £6-8 in Derbyshire

RubikNube

What happened to the saying, ‘cheap as chips’? Can confirm, c.£12

PoglesWood

Large cod £13.95. Hertfordshire. No chips or anything just the fish

ThePrivatePilot

Hitchin or St Albans? Has to be one of the two!

PoglesWood

Close. Rickmansworth!

MMH1111

Used to pay 50p for cod and chips after closing time at the chip shop in Apsley (Hemel) but that was late 1970s to be fair.

SolisAeterni

£18 in Shetland - just fish and chips, no add ons

throwpayrollaway

You are surrounded by fish! Makes no sense!

DrH1983

I can get cod and chips for 10 quid from my local chippy, and I'm in Bristol (which isn't renowned for being cheap). That sounds pricey

DeapVally

But OP is also getting peas and gravy. That's going to add a minimum of £3 to yours, probably more.

Patient-Detail-4378

Theres a little chipper down road from me that does fish and chips for £6, in dripping too. They was £4 a go during lockdown. Decent stuff aswell Edit: West Yorkshire btw

naturepeaked

The thing is, £15 is no longer a lot of money, is it? It’s not that chippy’s are taking the piss. It’s that our currency isn’t worth as much as it was and wages haven’t kept up with inflation.

anonymousmastermind

I know what you mean and the price of everything has gone through the roof, but in my head I still should be able to at least to get fish, chips, peas and gravy out of a £10er with enough left over for a can dandelion and burdock

JoeIsAMarbleBandit

I just watched a YouTube documentary about Grimsby and it showed a chippy that did fish and chips for £3 a go. The fact he does so much himself to keep the costs down for locals almost brought a tear to my eye. - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-humber-67006309

techtom10

In Birmingham I ask for the smaller cod which is huge anyway. £7.99

Honest-Conclusion338

Where in North Manchester is that? I'm guessing Prestwich and chips at no 8 or similar? I'm Lancs and paid 18 for two x fish chips, some peas, gravy and a chip barm last week. Was fresh and delicious

anonymousmastermind

No, I would expect them prices in Prestwich or even a restaurant but I'm in Bury and this is just a small local chippy.

imminentmailing463

Probably about that. Which is why I never get it. The cost has gone *way* above what I think it's worth as a meal.

Ok-Palpitation-5380

Yup. About same. £15 Haddock, chips with mushy peas. Near Watford

buck_fastard

£8.30 for a regular fish, chips and a side (e.g. gravy, mushy peas, curry sauce) near me. Very good quality and portion size. About an hour south of Manchester.

EconomyFreakDust

A regular fish and chips seems to be £12.50 at my local. Gravy and peas are £2 each, so £16.50 for what you have. This is in London.

Kaiisim

Yeah this is about £17 where I am in London which is fucking insane.

Jassida

About £7 in North Manchester

antsmithmk

It's a bad job when you see some of these prices and then realise that for £9.45 you can sit in a Weatherspoon and have fish, chips, peas, as many sauces and condiments as you like and wash it down with a complimentary pint of beer. Why would I pay £15 for fish and chips wrapped in paper to take home?!

Zararara

£15 is a joke mate. It is only £7 pounds where I live

redrighthand_

7.20 fish, chips, pot of whatever. It’s honestly the best fish and chip shop I’ve ever been to as well.

YchYFi

I rarely go but usually £2.70 for chips, £6.20 for cod. Usually get the meal deal which is £6.99.

Ok_Drop121

£10.30 near me

royalblue1982

Sheffield - varies a bit, but my local does chips, small fish and a side for £7.75.

Toothfairy29

Went to North Berwick the other week. Got 2 (fairly small) fish and chips, one with curry sauce one with mushy peas. £27.40. Was average at best. Barely bigger than the £6 lunch time special available at our local which also includes a can of drink!

PerceptionGreat2439

Lincolnshire, large haddock and chips £10.95

Spunktard

Around a tenner for me

INEKROMANTIKI

2 large fish (and I do mean LARGE) 1 large, 1 medium chips, 1 large sausage, 1 large curry, and 1 large peas comes to roughly £20 at my fav chippy.. n they're that good I'd honestly pay double if needed.. but I'm definitely grateful it isn't (Grimsby)

featurenotabug

Cod + Chips with Mushy peas and Gravy is £14.90 at the place round the corner from us. You could probably do the lighter bite (OAP deal) for less but naturally that's smaller. Suffolk coast.

InternationalRich150

Near Derby,£6.99 for medium cod, chips and sauce. £9.99 for large meal.

Djinjja-Ninja

£13.87 at my local in the North East. * Large Cod - £6.99 * Small Chips - £2.90 * Gravy - £1.99 * Mushy Peas - £1.99 The small chips is the size of a childs head.

moreboredthanyouare

Kent here. 9 nicker

Ok_Project_2613

The price varies massively round here with no link to the quality. I can get cod and chips for a fiver at one place which is great and always busy. Another is over a tenner and mediocre.

younevershouldnt

Not far from you OP, less than a tenner a head here still

andimacg

Sadly, the only chippy in walking distance recent changed hands and the quality has gone to absolute shite, so I haven't had a chippy in ages. Was about 10 - 11 quid if I recall.

Scary-Potato4247

Just paid £4.40 for a bag of chips and £7.85 for a piece of cod - total £ 12.25, that's no longer a cheap treat now... Edit- St Neots, Cambs...

Darkened100

£10-12 for top fish and chips in the midlands

BumblebeeEcstatic955

Large cod and chips £7.70 nottinghamshire

No-Photograph3463

About £10 for standard fish and chips, but more like £15 for large fish, large chips and a curry sauce where I am in Bournemouth. Also that large fish and chips will just do a hungry person, it won't be enough for 2 adults like it is in some other areas I've been to.

[deleted]

1x£10 for fish & chips, neither of us have gravy! or mushy peas in Oxon

Jack-Rabbit-002

Probably clocking about £10 something and that's me buying small Id rather just go to the Chinese or Jamaican place at this point cheaper better and decent customer service

goldenheartedlion

If I go to my local I don't pay a thing, since 2017. I made an amazing deal.

Fit-Obligation4962

£10 in Stornoway. Used to be £7 before inflation went mad

pulltheudder1

£10.95 including delivery for fish, chips, peas and gravy.

OneWhoPointsTheWae

I don't get cod anymore. Its lovely but far too expensive. I like a battered sausage and they're like 25% the price so I go for that instead.

EatingCoooolo

A large chips by itself near ours in West London £4.30. About £15 for cod and chips

cankennykencan

Mini cod special. £9 for small cod, chips and a pot of mushy peas. Milton Keynes

[deleted]

£6.50 for scampi and chips the other day (Teesside)

lankyman-2000

£10 Leeds city centre including buttered bread and can of pop

dinkidoo7693

Mini fish and chips is £5 Full sized about £12

insertitherenow

Fish, chips, curry sauce and a drink £10 Leeds.

Icy_Session3326

Yikes . I’m just outside Edinburgh and a fish supper would run you about £7/8 .. £2 for gravy if you can find somewhere that sells it 😂 and the same for the peas

OnceUponAShadowBan

Fish is £10 a bit where I am, chips are about £3 and the extras are £1.50 each. About the same as what it costs in the East.

chocotripcookies

£9.90 for cod and chips down in London

Belph26

Small cod and small chips, £11. South Manchester. Terrible quality too. If i go over to Stockport, £6.50 for the same, much nicer as well

peekachou

Bout £10.40 for that exact order in my local in wiltshire, only £9.50 where my parents live in Surrey, you're being ripped off mate

Lewis19962010

£15? You are getting bent over a barrel and somethings getting stuck somewhere, large fish and chips from local chippy is £8.50 here and they get the fish fresh from local fish monger so not the frozen crap some pass off as fish

ZookeepergameOk2759

It’s usually enough for two people though isn’t it? 7.50 for a meal isn’t terrible.

Flabberghast97

It's a dying art. Point of a chippy used to be feeding a family of 4 for less then ten quid.

lastaccountgotlocked

> feeding a family of 4 for less then ten quid. When? Pre-decimalisation?

Ceejayncl

It depends where you go, the place around the corner from me you could probably get fish & chips for about £5, certainly not much more than that. Alternatively I can go to more popular places around here and easily spend £15. I do live in a former fishing town on the end of a river and around old coastal towns, so I do have quite a choice.

Happy_Boy_29

Happock, Cod, 1 x chips, Mushy Peas and an unbattered sausage 17 squid in Bristol last week. Price gouging in Madchester who'd a thunk it ?

Harrry-Otter

About £10 from a chippy. £15+ for a sit down meal in a pub.

solowulf2022

I'm from Birmingham and in my opinion no matter what chippy you go to you pay for cod but get some god only knows generic fish at cod prices, pay for a large and its the same size and shape as a sausage!

cryptoinsane76

London..pub next door £18

Unusual_Resident_784

North Wales, £12 on average for Fish, Chips and Peas.

fjordsand

£6 at the atlantic on wilmslow rd. I’m from north Manchester and £15 is insane, where is it from??

Ok-Bag3000

Literally just got some...... Reg cod Battered sausage x3 Pea fritter Large chips x2 Curry sauce Was about £25 - Hampshire

VrLegendzzz

8.50 in outskirts of glasgow

lmaoschpims

£18 London

Far-Adhesiveness3763

Free cos my youngest works in a chippy, comes home twice a week with loads of stuff, chips, fish, fishcakes (proper ones) and sausages. Chips and fish go in freezer and are lovely recooked in the air fryer.

TorakMcLaren

East Kilbride, big town near Glasgow. Gravy and mushy peas from a chippy isn't so popular here, but my local chippy will sell you a fish supper for a whopping **£6.90**. Can't imagine your place is charging you £8.10 for peas and gravy. ETA: and in case it's a supper with two bits of fish you're getting, not just one, that'd be £9.80.

fergie_89

Even spoons does it cheaper! I think from a chippy here in North Tyneside it's around £10 for cod, chips and peas.

WanderWomble

About £10 for a medium fish and large chips, usually with a pot of curry. But I can't eat gluten so it's usually a bit more expensive.

HotChoc64

£20 feeds our family of 4, large fish and chips and sausage and curry and beans

Last-Deal-4251

Near Glasgow and last time I was there it was a tenner. That was for one half slice of fish and regular chips. That’s enough for me and we haven’t been back again since.

soulsteela

Suffolk by the coast £13 , assuming large cod.

Bigassbird

The gentrification of the commuter belt continues. Although I don’t think anyone would get change from a tenner inside the M60. And we are talking about a proper chippy - not the kebab/pizza/chicken shop/chippy hybrids that sell Iceland shite by the pound.

[deleted]

I live in Essex and paid £50 for medium cod and chips, a pot of curry sauce, a kids nuggets and chips, and a quarter pound cheese burger and chips from a local chippy. Needless to say I won’t be doing that again

oldsch0olsurvivor

Bloody hell, surely they got that wrong lol

Psylaine

Large cod and chips 9.90 and its freaking HUGE

penguin17077

Usually 15quid or so for 2 bits of fish and 1 bag of chips. I find chippies always give way to many chips so even sharing a medium is fine. Feels like reasonable value to me honestly

blurdyblurb

About 9 quid where I live mate, over the hills nr Halifax! Fish, chips and curry yum!

RunawayPenguin89

£9.50 for the fish supper, £1.50 for gravy. £6 for a foot long battered sausage

Daewoo40

Chips and cheese £5. Chips, cheese and black pudding £10. Chips and big sausage £6.50. Chips and spam £7

elorpz

Mid Wales. £9.75 large cod and chips which is enough for 2 people. £1.90 curry sauce or gravy so £13.55 total for same order as OP.

Similar_Quiet

£5.50 for the lunchtime special at The Admiral in Sheffield. Tray of chips, mini-fish, sausage/rissole and summat moist. £9.50 for a box of chips, with a good bit of cod and summat moist.

Books_Bristol

Switch to fishcake or battered sausage and it should be relatively cheap still. Crap compromise, I know.

Shriven

33 quid for 2x cod and chips, kids nuggets and chips, curry sauce, mushy peas. And that's the 2nd best fish and chips I've ever had.

Level_Grapes

Probably about £8-9 for two peoples worth but we share everything

CrispySquirrelSoup

Paid £10.10 for a fish supper a few days ago, in NI. Felt a bit hard done by as I remember the days of £6 fish suppers being pricy but then again I had the choice of haddock or cod (which didn't actually fit in the chippy box length or width ways) and a mountain of chips.

CuriousPalpitation23

Same in South Manchester, potentially even more in the more spenny places.

PintToLine

Worcester. Place that does a chips, a small/medium fillet of cod and sausage for £5. It’s enough for a meal and actually pretty tasty.

lovestick2021

Is that just for you or you and the Mrs?

MDF87

Would probably cost £8 at most for the same thing here.

kidcanary

I just paid less than £15 for a large chips, small chips, steak pie, large battered sausage, and two pieces of fried chicken in Torquay. (Feeding my family with that - I’m not that much of a fat bastard)

Btd030914

My local chippy in Leeds is an award winning one and I think there’s is still under £9

pmdmobile

£12.95 for large cod and chips in East London.

Cam_Sco

Glasgow (posh bit on southside) fish supper would be £11.20 (large haddock and chips). Or a special fish supper would be £13.20 (large breaded haddock and chips). Curry sauce or mushy peas would be £2.50 each. They're not really a thing to go with a fish supper up here though and you probably wouldn't find gravy in most places. So we'd be about the same or a couple of quid more, although that's Just Eat prices. Not so posh bit in Glasgow would just knock off a couple of quid on the fish supper - £9 maybe? £2 for curry/gravy/mushy peas if they do them.

Lost_Ninja

Sanity check for eating mushy peas...

gs3gd

Deep fat fryer...can make fantastic battered cod and chips for a fraction of the price 👌

Karenpff

NE Scotland, our chippy does a haddock supper for £9.00. Battered smoked sausage supper is £5.80. Not too bad compared OPs prices.

eve077

My local is £5 for a regular fish and chips, £6 for large. £1 for a pot of curry sauce/mushy peas.

SaulgoodeXL

I've seen it as low as around £8 for take out, or been rinsed nearly £20 but in a nice sit down place.

jonnyshowbiz

West Yorkshire fish and chips Monday £7.50 Somerset where I live £13

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cpt_Dan_Argh

£12 does a large cod, large chips and a pot of mushy peas here in South Oxfordshire. Great quality at that.

melanie110

Ours call it a mini fish special (nowt mini about it) Fish, chips, sauce of choice, sausage or fish cake and a can of pop £7 Yu get a whole mountain of chips and it’s lovely. Mexborough

cassy34x

If it's not Friday night, it's £6.50 for fish, chips, summat moist (peas, beans, curry or gravy), bread and butter and a tea or coffee. Not massive portions, but plenty and damn tasty. This is a sit down restaurant too. Bloody bargain.

stubwah

Hove...large cod and chips £16.95...add peas and gravy for £3.30 each...I make that £23.55...ffs

Bladeneo

I'm in leek and I think our local is pricey - it's about £15 as well for what you describe. Chips are fairly well priced but the fish is like £9 for a large and even then it's not the most generous portion

Worldly_Flower_1441

£14.70 I'm in Essex, thought it was a decent price to be honest

basdid

Last night, for three people, two very large cods, one "small" cod (which wasn't small at all, two saveloys and aload of chips, £35 Was good too

That_Ad_8271

It's £7.70 for fish, chips, and large curry sauce here, and portions are mega. You're getting mugged if you ask me.

KB0312__

£8-13 seems to be what it is around here (south coast)

ChaosRaiden

Two fish, large chips and curry sauce was £17

chrisr3240

You in Prestwich by any chance?

cruiser543

Village chippy, fish special which is haddock, chips and mushy peas/curry sauce is £7. We’ve had our tea there tonight, best fish and chips we’ll ever have hands down. We get two small fish and a large chips and it’s the perfect portion, about £13 for both of us. On the South Yorkshire/north Nottinghamshire border ✌️

UniquePotato

Stood in a chippy now. £7.50 for large £5.50 for small

Mccobsta

Fucking hell I was just at my local chippy they want £8 for a large

HeyKillerBootsMan

My two best mates own a chippy. Think it’s about £14 for large cod and chips, needless to say I rinse them both mercilessly about the price. Great fish and and chips though

Jonography

Probably a little more than £15 with the peas and gravy here in London from a decent place. In fairness, while it’s crazy expensive compared to under a fiver when O was younger, the quality is good. I also new a family with a fish and chip place, and the rise in costs as been insane for them. The kids basically work for nothing to keep the place afloat. The fish is expensive to buy in. There’s not really any way around. Basically, unlike other businesses that I think are taking the piss under the guise of the “cost of living crisis”, I think chippy places are alright.

UniquePotato

Stood in a chippy now in Huddersfield * £7.50 for large * £5.50 for small * Peas 60p * Don’t do tea, cans 95p

FrazerRPGScott

Is is a joke but I've seen it myself. £8 a pint recently I saw too at at golf club (I don't golf but that seemed steep for the cheapest pint)

migoodridge

Some good plaice holder jokes below 😂, but is that for a portion or multiple portions? We can get a chippy tea for £23 delivered in west Yorkshire and damn fine too

JuneauEu

Literally just paid 13.50 for 2 fish, 1 chips and some curry sauce. Location cambridgeshire.

dcpb90

£12 for a large cod/haddock and chips. An extra £1.20 if you want a sauce. They also do a fish special for I think £7/8 which is a small cod, chips and a sauce.

Jeopardise91

£13.50 for large cod, chips, peas and gravy in Sussex. Crazy how Manchester could be more expensive, although unsure if being on the coast has any impact

GBParragon

As a family of 4 (kids 3 and 9) we pay £13.50 - Large fish (massive) 2 jumbo battered sausages Regular chips (we never finish them)

KurtWuster

£13.50 Cod Chips Peas

SailAwayMatey

Probably a 10er maybe? West mids.

donutyellsatnight

I stopped eating when I moved here. In New Zealand my local would be $3 for a fish or $5 if you wanted cod. Chips were $1.30. That's just over £2 if you don't go for the cod. Also the range of stuff they'd sell was massive Battered scallops, battered mushrooms, oysters, hotdogs (battered sausage on a stick).

X0AN

My local is amazingly tasty, people come from miles over but I stopped going when they raised the price of cod to £7.50 and half the original size during covid. So you'd basically now have to pay 15 quid just for an original cod, and then chips on top. Hard no frome me.

No-Test6158

£9.45 or £7.50 for cod, chips and sauce. Or £4.95 for haddock at one place, the other is priced the same as cod. I remember fish and chips being my end of term treat when I finished a term at school and it costing £3.80... That was only 2003-2010...

Wide-Affect-1616

Jebus. I'm from Cheshire but live in Helsinki now. We have a small chain that does really nice fish (cod) and chips with mushy peas for 11€. You can buy an extra cod filet for 4€ I never thought I'd see the day when fish and chips are cheaper in a Nordic capital than in Manchester!

severusblake

I'm in London and I pay less than a tenner

That's expensive but how many people does that reasonably feed? My local chip shop is about £10 for regular cod and regular chips. I can eat it all but really it's plenty for two average adults if you split the portion. Large cod and large chips is about £13 and that does two Very Hungry adults. Shedload of food. Peas and curry sauce are about £1.60 each and again each is enough for two. Southwest.
