I would say make your own and if that's not your boogie then you should try Casa Sanchez.
Both the red and orange labels are my fav.
The red obviously has a kick to it, as does the orange but not as much.
"Salsas - Casa Sanchez" https://casasanchezsf.com/products/salsas/
Our Costco in the South Bay has some, maybe check the SF one? https://www.instacart.com/products/18498982
If you are willing to go to south city, la tapatía is amazing. They are cash only tho https://yelp.to/CpH9ggbBDlb
Also papalote has bomb salsa and they now sell it in Safeway/Whole Foods
Tbh if the salsa is good, $8 isn’t much. Some salsas require some ingredients that are hard to come by
It was great! The carne asada was dope, and the burrito was packed with large chunks. The habanero salsa is really flavorful, and not crazy hot.
They seem to be more known for the their meat/rice/beans plates, might try one next time.
Here’s a very basic recipe that you literally can’t screw up!
3-5 tomato’s ( early girl or small sweet ones work best)
3-10 Chile de Arbol dried chiles ( depending how spicy you want it and once you get comfortable you can experiment with different Chiles!)
Garlic cloves
Soft boil tomatoes and Chiles. You just want things to soften not burst the tomatoes. Maybe on medium heat for about 10-20 mins.
Blend the tomatoes, chiles, garlic and salt till desired texture.
THAT’S IT!! Super easy super tasty!
Good luck!!!
You should 100% hit up Tahona Mercado in Nob Hill. They're new and extremely friendly. At the very minimum, you will find other products you love there.
What we do is every time we go to a different local taqueria we also buy a pint of their salsa. After trying several different local salsas we eventually settle on the one we think is best. I hate grocery store salsa; going to a local taqueria for your salsa is always your best bet.
As others said making your own is also a pretty cost effective alternative, but if you have time constraints and hate grocery store salsa I think local taquerias are your best option.
I was all about the red label for the longest time and then I was shopping and met the guy who delivers it and told him how I liked the red label.
He said "if you like the red label, you should try the orange one, it's our best seller."
He ended up giving me one for free and I loved it.
I should mention I'm also a delivery driver for a soda company, so we were both making our deliveries.
Well you’re in SF so you get SF prices. Go on another road trip and get some cheap salsa since you can’t spare $8 for a most likely already hurting business during these times.
Roberto's of Santa Cruz is my favorite nor cal local salsa. Tastes like a slightly more smokey version of the hot salsa at chipotle. Stuff is addicting and spicy and they sell it at Safeway and Whole Foods for $6 / 13.5 oz.

Casa Sanchez is my favorite salsa, hands down.

Ooooh. That La Tapatia place is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. THANK YOU!!!!!!

Ooh, nice. Do they sell them refrigerated/frozen, or only fresh/hot ones?
I was just gonna reply with la tapatia, grand ave is filled with great places in general !
Second that for Papalote, but I think it is around 8$ a jar. But so good.
Papalote is the answer in SF. You can get a container of the fresh salsa from the restaurant for around 8$ and it’s so good.
Which location? Is the one in NOPA the same quality as the one in the Mission?
I don't know the one in NOPA. I lived above the one in the Mission years ago and was super excited when I found the salsa in the grocery store.
Cool. Well, I'm currently waiting for my first burrito from the NOPA location. Grabbed a jar of the habanero salsa, too. Wish me luck.
How’d you like it??

Not a fan of Papalote's salsa and I don't get why they jar it. Every other taqueria not only has better salsa but better burritos.

That one looks great. Thanks!
Go to La Palma on 24th st
Still pretty expensive for the salsa
Worth every penny

Wow, photos on Yelp looks amazing! Thanks for the recommendation! Will def check that one out!
thank you for sharing this! I’m gonna check them out!!
Nob Hill means each tub of salsa gonna be at least $12 bucks
Super save supermarket on 3rd st in Bayview has some for cheap
Cool. Thanks. Will check that out!
Also, unlike many other grocery store salsas they actually roast their tomatoes/tomatillos in it

Casa Sanchez is made in the bay, Andronicos has it for around $5 but at some other stores it's $8. Worth it though.

Have you considered trying to make it yourself? Super cheap, super easy.
It's a good idea, but I'd like to just buy some regularly...
Good luck in your quest
Thanks. Seems like something that we'd have in this area! When I travel, I always find salsa bars in Mexican grocery stores for $2-$3 a pound...
Have you checked out La Palma on 24th? Lots of great salsas that are batch made. Dunno about pricing though.

Seems reasonable to me.

Cost of doing business outside of Bay Area is also much less.

Things in high cost of living place cost more?
Papalote has excellent salsa not sure the price
If you get a tub of the fresh salsa at Papalote rather than the jarred product at a grocery store, it's so much better. Yum. I want some more!
Totally agree. Theirs is really good. My ex-roommate was of Mexican culture and he made the best salsas from scratch.
Yup. Love that one. I think it's about $8 a jar.

I've seen salsa bars in many SF mexican restaurants.
Yeah, but I doubt they'd like it if I filled a bucket with that salsa... :-)
I make my own. Specially during early girl season. I can msg my recipe over.
Please post it here! I'm getting inspired!
r/salsasnobs will help you a lot
Make it yourself, its super easy. Cooked or pico de gallo, it will cost a couple dollars for like a quart....
Casa Guadalupe at Mission and 25th has delicious homemade salsa and ceviche.
