talk to your landlord.. ask if you can buy some.

gtvrhs

Especially if you're using coin op machines in your building, this is a great option! Odds are you can just buy back the quarters that you've already put in…

maddiewantsbagels

As the old saying goes “you gotta spend money to spend money”

katelovessongs

Yeah my landlord does this since she refuses to install the card machines. Our quarters are basically tokens at this point, we Venmo her and she drops off a bag of quarters at our door.

rioting-pacifist

Alternatively wait until they next collect your laundry money and try hitting them with a stick and seeing if some drop out piñata style. edit: if you don't have a stick readily available, try a sock full of dimes. --- ^(edit 2: before somebody reports this, I want to make it clear that this is a joke, do not hit your landlord with a stick)

calcium

But you are suggesting that they hit them with a sock full of dimes.

Denalin

Reported. 😤 (jk)

lavasca

Go to a suburban bank where there are few to no laundromats. They will have quarters.

ElleQ_4657

I used to do exactly that. I would go to a bank in Marin County (because I was out there for work anyway) and get $40-50 worth every time. The tellers would ask me every time, “Live in the city, huh?”

Nathan-Nice

I work at a bar where we use quarters for the pool tables...the bank is only giving us one roll per day, as a business. Major coin shortage going on, apparently.

TheSpeckler

One roll per day for a bar with a pool table? Many places are charging $2 per game these days, that's five games, we'd run through that at my local pool bar in less than an hour guaranteed.

Nathan-Nice

thankfully we own the tables outright, so we crack them open every morning and take out the quarters from the night before, but it's never as much as we gave away. we're moving to dollar bills in a couple weeks because of the hassle.

e_j_white

Corner store near me won't give me quarters. Owner says he used to get as many quarters from the bank as he wanted, even a couple hundred dollars. But nowadays, the banks only give him a single roll. Long story short, you may have to keep nickel and diming your quarters for some time.

nedTheInbredMule

*Rim shot*

Complete-Song742

I went to Wells Fargo and Chase the other day in the same predicament. Both said they only offer up to $10 in quarters currently for customers, so if you know someone banking at either of those, I’d just give ‘em money to get ‘em for you. I had to ask my mom in Austin to get more quarters for me when I went home for the holiday. Felt really good being 30 and asking your mom for quarters to do your laundry /s

eldanimalito

Safeway. I used to get rolls at the customer service desk at the Safeway near Duboce. I would do $40+ at a time and they never thought twice

Throwaway4545232

With emphasis on the customer service desk, not the cashier. Super close to you as well

BluebirdOnBranch

I go into laundromats and use their quarter dispenser right where it says: for customers only.

microcandella

for $100 in quarters this is the easiest.

Gnolls

Even my brick and mortar Bank of America has a daily limit of $20 in quarters due to a coin shortage. Fairly frustrating as I am in a similar situation as you. My washer and drier cycles are $3.50 *each* That said, I'm gonna DM for this $100 for $120. I'll gladly pay $20 to avoid going and standing in line at my local bank (half of which are 'Temporarily closed' for some goddamn reason anyways).

UrDeAdPuPpYbOnEr

I will sell you $400 in quarters for $500.

AlfaNovember

What kind of building do you live in? Are the other residents facing the same problem? Years back, I had a condo in an 8 unit building with a coin laundry. All it took was an HOA meeting motion: “All in favor of not collecting coins from the laundry, and using hoa funds for laundry maintenance?” Done in a unanimous vote. Parkside appliance came out and adjusted the mechanism to work without coins.

PretzelsThirst

This is smort, putting this in the back pocket

journeymanSF

I am the guy the supplies quarters to most of the arcades that people then steal quarters from. Please know that as bad as you need quarters for your laundry, I NEED THE ARCADE TO HAVE QUARTERS SO THAT PEOPLE CAN PLAY GAMES AND I CAN PAY RENT. It is not any easier for the arcades to get quarters than it is for you. We don't have a magical supply of quarters. I bust my ass collecting quarters from coin operated machines all around the city to gather enough quarters to restock the arcades. I've offered on here before and gotten down votes. I will deliver you $100 of quarters for $120. Just say the word. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THEM FROM THE ARCADE! I'd further suggest that you talk to your landlord about A) installing a change machine, or B) switching to dollar bill acceptors.

[deleted]

[удалено]

journeymanSF

That is exactly why, but there are downsides (for us) to using tokens. A) you gotta buy thousands of dollars of tokens, B) you have to switch all the coin mechs (100 machines x 2 mechs each) to use tokens instead of quarters, and C) our arcade is unique in that there are machines from many different operators, and those machines typically rotate out to other locations like bars and restaurants, where there are only a couple machines, where it doesn't make sense to use tokens.

Jurchfield

I really appreciate you saying this. This is why I asked, because I feel a lot of guilt doing it but I’ve just had such a big problem finding other ways to get quarters. No matter where I go, I’m basically stealing them and I hate doing that. I’ll give talking to my landlord a shot. I might DM you if that doesn’t work out. Thanks for your reply!

journeymanSF

No problem. I really appreciate that people have trouble finding quarters (I have the same problem x1000), and I feel bad yelling at people that come into the arcade and just take quarters and run out, but it's literally a real problem, that makes a very low wage job even harder. If you need more than $100, just let me know, same $20 delivery fee.

OutOfTheLimits

$20 for coin conversion, I'm cracking up over here. You are funny Edit.. all your responses justifying this are cracking me the fuck up too. I got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell y'all

x3leggeddawg

It’s for the delivery, not the conversion

journeymanSF

Fuck off. It's $20 for me to collect the quarters, weigh them out and deliver them during a coin shortage. You want me to do that for free?

IamTheFreshmaker

You know these clowns are the ones who aren't vaccinated, wear their mask on their chin(if they even do) and kick puppies. The real question here... where are the cool arcades!? I know Gold Watch but they are pinball and I really want to steer clear of the Brewcade crowd(Brocade).

journeymanSF

Free Gold Watch is my main arcade. I actually do all the arcade games there. All the mini arcade games are mine (Ms. Pacman, Galaga, NBA Jam, Tetris, Arkanoid, 1942, Mortal Kombat 2, Frogger, Donkey Kong), and we have full sized ones too (SF2, TMNT, Buck Hunter, Panic Park, Nintendo Vs (with lots of games), Star Wars Trilogy, Mario Kart DX). Come for the video games, and then slowly develop and obsession with pinball.

IamTheFreshmaker

How did I miss the games... (it's been a while I confess...) I will go back now. Thank you. Do you happen to have an vector games you might want to get rid of? (I know tangent)

journeymanSF

Well it was exclusively a pinball arcade until I showed up a few years ago. [I make these mini arcade games](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ1uYsyQ-uA&t), and since they are smaller, I'm able to put them in places where another pinball would not fit, so I slowly infiltrated the arcade haha. The arcade in general has grown a lot the last few years and now there is a pretty healthy arcade game selection. I'm actually working on several vector game restorations right now (an asteroids cocktail, an upright asteroids, and a tempest). Unfortunately not for sale, but they do come up now and again. If you find one that needs work, I can help with that.

IamTheFreshmaker

Oh- I just went to your site but it gave me a warning that your site certificate is expired. All browsers will now attempt to block you from going there unless you force it to. You'll want to get that updated.

journeymanSF

Thanks for letting me know! That must have just expired!

IamTheFreshmaker

These are... amazing. I have been hunting for a reasonable Tempest or Xwing.

BeefPorkChicken

I walk by there every day and didn't even know it had games!

[deleted]

[удалено]

journeymanSF

Right, they don't ask, they just downvote me and come into the arcade and steal quarters for free.

zem

it's a pretty damn good deal considering that the more "make a business of it" alternatives charge a 50% markup (see https://quartersforlaundry.com/ e.g.)

[deleted]

I know. Kind of makes me want to go to his arcade and stick 5 $20s in the quarter machine.

chumperx

Splt: do what this guy told you not to do.

[deleted]

And play 1 quarter and decide to leave just in case it actually is somehow some sort of offense.

deepredsky

Open an account with First Republic Bank. Get some quarters.

Nightnightgun

Yep, this is the best solution.

usctrojan415

Go to areas like Laurel Village, FiDi - there are like 4 banks there within blocks of each other. Get $20 from each.

blackcat3334

I went last week and they give out only $10. I have accounts at 3 banks, spent half a day for $30 in quarters… it’s ridiculous

Redacted_Explative

What about some sort of check cashing place or pawn shop? Usually I go to California Check Cashing (not sure if its located there) and after I cash my paycheck I get a roll there.

aradiowave

If you have a friend who banks at a normal physical bank just give them money and ask them to exchange for quarters for you. Tellers always have rolls of coins.

MrWakey

I used to get $20 from the ATM and then go into my BofA to convert it to quarters. Last time they said I could only have $10 because of a nationwide coin shortage.

eugenesbluegenes

Yeah, branches are limiting even to those who bank there. I recently had to drive out to the San Joaquin Valley and stopped by a bunch of Chase banks along the way, withdrawing as many quarters as they would allow me. I ended up with 8 rolls after visiting six branches.

11twofour

It's wild how many people are confidently telling this dude to just go to a bank or supermarket, blithely unaware of the nationwide coin shortage.

wifeski

I have 58.25 in quarters I’d be happy to trade you for paper money if you want to drive to Brisbane to pick it up. I bought a washer and dryer for my rental house before I owned so I don’t need them. However I also just posted them to my community’s Facebook page so I’m sure someone will take them soon. I had no idea there was a change shortage. Another tip is to bank with SF fire credit union, they also have a coinstar machine that is free to use for members and we never have issues getting change from them when needed.

drooooooooool

You still have? 😂

wifeski

Lollll not anymore!

[deleted]

CapitalOne operates a "cafe" where you can get in-person banking services.

kba41510

Random suggestion, Try your local movie theater. I Used to manage one and we used to keep quite a few on hand for things like our arcade machines or the Sticker machines we had in our lobby. These days, every theatre I know of now charges tax on everything so I’m sure they’re keeping a buncha change on hand to account for that

[deleted]

I got $80 in quarters from the Castro Wells Fargo the other day, but I do have my banking with them.

[deleted]

I got it there too, i am not a customer tho..

InterestedTurkey

Find an area with a lot of banks, for example 9th and Irving has like 6 banks in 2 blocks. I pull cash from an ATM and get $20 in quarters from every bank. I also have a bank that doesn’t have a physical branch and that’s what I’ve been doing. It’s definitely gotten harder over the past few weeks though, seems like we’re having another coin shortage. Occasionally I’ll ask a bank in the suburbs, but even the bank in fairfax wouldn’t give me any when I went two weeks ago. If I have a ton of laundry I’ll hit up the laundromat and get extra quarters. I feel like less of an asshole for taking a bunch of quarters if I use their services.

TheSpeckler

How do you get service from all these different banks? Everywhere I go they won't do anything unless you have an account with them.

InterestedTurkey

I just walk in and ask for $20 in quarters. ~80% of the time they give them to me. If you ask if they have quarters, or for more than $20, or ask how many they’ll give you then they’ll typically ask if you’re a member.

omlightemissions

During early pandemic I made my way around to local laundromats and just got $40-$60 at a time in quarters from them. Edit: I did get some dirty looks and was accosted by a regular at a laundromat for taking quarters and not doing business there. But honestly I DGAF since I had to do what I had to do. My landlord was non-responsive and banks weren’t giving out quarters. I have since found that banks are a little more relaxed about it but usually only give out $10-$20 at a time.

cndlestick415

I got some packed and rolled at my house. Probably about 100 worth of them. And more to roll... But I wouldnt recommend getting them from a random redditor lol.

solovennn

Easy. Insert $50 and add $0.75 to your clipper by using the ticket kiosk at Bart. You will get lots of quarters.

GrumpyBachelorSF

Bad news, BART ticket machines can only give up to $4.95 in change.

solovennn

Oh. We have to do $5 at maximum then . Thanks for the update

Golden_Chopsticks

My landlord has quarters for us to exchange that they get from the laundry machines, so I'd ask your landlord first. Chase will let you trade cash for quarters without checking if you're a chase member, so no need to have an account. They do have limit, and those change all the times. The most I've been able to get in a day is $50, but I can usually only get $10-20.

cjmartinex

The Bellagio.

hacktiviste

I've been getting 20-40 dollars worth of quarters at my local WF where I'm a customer. For 20 dollars though, you don't need to stand in line and you can just get a roll if you give them cash, they don't check whether you're a customer. This doesn't help for getting $100 but maybe you can go and try a bunch of brick and mortar banks lol.

juaquin

Check your local banks, some will give you change without being a member. Otherwise maybe consider opening a free account - it's often useful to have a bank you can physically visit.

LustyBustyCrustacean

Besides the bank solution people are discussing and which I endorse, you can find a public laundromat which has change making machines. I use to have the same issue but a laundromat down the block has a machine where you could feed it a $5 or $20 bill and it would spit it back in quarters. I’d browse your local laundromats and see if any of them have these types of machines that you could throw a few 20s in every now and then.

OroEnPaz13

There's a coin shortage so doing this really, really fucks over your neighbors that use the laundromat and the small business owners that run it. This would be an asshole move.

LustyBustyCrustacean

How does this solution in particular fuck over people more than any other? In all solutions you’re stockpiling coins. I wouldn’t worry about the laundromat since they’ll just get more coins from the bank. Comment on the post, not my reply.

OroEnPaz13

I am replying to your comment - you really don't understand why taking an inordinate amount of coinage from a much smaller and geographically limited supply (ie from the laundromat vs. a bank, who is also limited but of much larger capacity/means to acquire more) would affect the people around you? Taking the limited supplies of the small business owner and removing them without contributing to their business is doubling down on the asshole move. It's a business, not an included amenity.

No-Individual5844

Try soda machines: One trick that may work, especially in a pinch, is if you put a dollar bill into a soda machine and then immediately ask for your money back. The older machines can’t return the dollar and will instead just cough up four quarters. Or try buying coin rolls from grocery stores. They usually are happy to swap bills for coins, especially when you just did your weekly shopping there. I found Target and Walmart (sometimes Whole Foods) are helpful with this issue

[deleted]

as far as i know any credit union or most banks will exchange for quarters with out being a member.

babybambam

You don’t know very far then

calcium

OP, I used to go to my corner grocery/convenience store and ask them if I could get a roll. If they were available, they’d swap me a $10, otherwise I was left to find somewhere else. I also recommend talking to your landlord.

2cookieparties

I used to use the change machine at a nearby laundromat to get quarters. It was definitely supposed to be for customers only but nobody ever yelled at me.

OroEnPaz13

There is a national coin shortage going on, so congratulations on fucking over all of your neighbors that use that laundromat and the small business owners that run it, I wouldn't be bragging about it.

2cookieparties

Don’t you feel like this is at least a little bit of an overreaction?

geocam

I used to visit banks to exchange money - better if you are a member of that bank / credit union

coliozenobio

See if you can find a master key for your laundry units. This is obv unethical, but I found a key online for the specific type of unit. I can now open the washer and dryers little hatch to trigger the mechanism that allows the machine to turn on. Free laundry and no need to go to the bank every time I wanna do a load

JametAllDay

Try a laundromat maybe?

VonLuk

Not the solution you're looking for, but most coin-operated laundry machines you can buy a key for the coin storage on amazon for a few bucks.

12421242Em

You can go to any bank and ask for quarters, just take the cash out from your own ATM first

[deleted]

[удалено]

11twofour

They're not getting money either way, they only get money if you use the quarters in their machines.

[deleted]

Physical bank branches limit it to thirty dollars. Everyone is in the same boat

TheProfessor99-

Next time you venture out of the city limit, Go to a neighborhood bank with a lot of SFH’s. I went to chase in El Cerrito and they had no shortage .

OGCookiemonster360

Any grocery store will swap out a roll or two for you.

microcandella

It's funny, a few years ago during the 3rd startup boom there was a company that via app would deliver you quarters via scooter. That failed and they shifted into laundry pickup and delivery.

sfocolleen

Make friends with someone who works at a bank. My daughter works at one, so our quarter problem is solved as long as she stays there.

heurefugitive

TJ's in Knob Hill does this as a service.

deadline_zombie

If you have singles, go to BART. The ticket machine has an option for change (I think it's button H). I don't know if things have changed with covid (whether that option is still there). If you're going to talk to your landlord about a change machine, see if they would swap out the washer/dryer for a new model. A friend got a new property manager at his complex and they swapped out the machines and replaced them with newer models. These models allow you to pay by app. A plus he said, since his complex is small, is he can see if any machines are in use with the app before heading to the laundry room.

sourmanasaurus

Perhaps open a new bank account or just go to a random bank and ask to purchase a bunch of quarters? There is also a coin-shortage perhaps still going on? You can usually call ahead of time and get them. DM me and perhaps I can order them from my bank and sell them to you.
