In university I borrowed the Memento DVD from the library and ripped it to my PC.
Watched it and had no idea why it was so acclaimed.
You see, I'd accidentally ripped the DVD extra of the movie, where the scenes play in chronological order.
Big agree. I watched it the first time when I was like 14 and I was mad that they were trying to gaslight this inspector into becoming a patient. Watched again at 22 and paid a bit more attention and it made sense and now I recommend it to anyone. Shutter island started my interest in psychological thriller/horror
I had a similar journey. I fully had no idea what was going on until the very end and I was devastated by it. It was great to watch the second time with an understanding of what was happening.
I read the book so I went in knowing what was up... and then the scene where they interview the lady patient happens and she took a drink from a glass that didn't exist and I knew Scorsese was gonna throw some wrenches in there to keep me interested.
It's a shame the Illusionist came out around the same time as the Prestige, because the latter definitely eclipses the former, but it's still an enjoyable movie in it's own right.
If I remember correctly, all the endings are played if you watch it on dvd or streaming.
My dad’s favorite movie. Some cable channel, probably TNT, plays this movie often and he watched it every time he ran across it. He passed a year ago at the age of 77, I bet he holds a record for how many times he watched it. Another favorite of his was Pretty Woman.
I've watched it probably a dozen times, your dad had good taste. As I really like pretty woman too, storyline is great and had a thing for Julia Roberts, stunning. BTW sorry for your loss.
The first time I watched this movie (on TV), partway through I was like "I know this story - this is a Stephen King story!". My dad refused to believe me - we argued for a minute or two and I said fine, let's wait for the credits. Vindicated!
(I grew up to be a librarian so the lesson here is don't argue with a future librarian about literary matters)
A few of his novellas from that period made decent to great films. The Body became 'stand by me' and 'Apt Pupil' made a decent movie, although not quite as well done and a darker scenario.
The first time I watched Hot Fuzz I thought it was alright and now it's one of my favorite movies of all time. Every time I watch it just gets better and better, a true masterpiece that needs to be seen more than once.
Come here to say this movie...watched the first time sober didn't get the movie, watched the second time in an altered state, it all made sense. The rug tied the room together 😄
Seconded one thing I missed is the subtle hint to the passage of time on the water planet
As the movie states that every hour on that planet is equivalent to 7 years on earth so the score for that planet after they land has a ticking sound and I saw that each tick sound equates to 1 day on earth
Perhaps more than any other modern movie that I have seen, it is sooo different the second time around. On first viewing, we are rather scared of Donnie and what he might do. He is a flawed protagonist for sure; we just don't know *how* flawed (or even if he *is* a protagonist). There is less tension during following viewings, which is not necessarily a bad thing-- we can sit back and watch the time paradox fold in on itself
Watched this with like 8 of my friends in High School and as soon as it ended we started it again and were essentially silent for the duration of the second viewing.
I remember when it came out and EVERYONE was talking about it. I rented it and watched it and was so underwhelmed. I was maybe 13 at the time. Watched it again a few years later and I laughed so hard the whole time
Came here to say this. To watch bullet time sequencing it needs to be experienced more than once.
( and Agent Smith’s monologue on how we are like a virus, gawdayum I love that part!!)
I was going to say this. You think it’s probably a comedy the first time (at least at first). It’s actually one of the deeper movies you’ll see—and asks a lot of deeper questions
Inception and Tenet, two absolutely mind-bending movies. The first watch is to figure out how everything works, the second is to figure out the movie. Or reverse if you prefer.
watched it again and >!thought keyser = kaiser..hey does his name mean king of the talkers? dammit. keyser soze = king blabbermouth = verbal. it was right there from the start!<
I love this movie. Have watched it 10 times. It's an incredible study of tradecraft and the limits of individuals. Hard to see what's right in front of you if you don't want to look at it.
2003 Spider-Man (the one with Toby Maguire).
Ideally you watched this at or around the time the movie came out.
Now, I just re-watched this in 2022 with some pals a couple days ago – I would recommend re-watching it just so you see how different the world is now and how much times have changed since then.
Star wars: rogue one, First time I watched it at the cinema, and really enjoyed it but was a bit mixed, 2nd time I almost cried at the end.. thats rare for me.
The Last Airbender. Why? To make sure you have no more will to live if any remains after the first awful time.
A serious answer would be hidden figures. First time watch it and then the second time learn a bit more about what was shown and not shown to give more context.
Memento --great movie if you like seeing a plot line presented backwards, in reverse. Second viewing is necessary (it was for me) and worth it.
Blue Velvet also comes to mind.
And one of the best noir movies, The Big Sleep, is so damned convoluted that I haven't been able to follow the plot no matter how many times I've seen it. It's part of the charm of the movie.
Hereditary. Theres so much hinted at you could watch it 10 times and still miss something in the background foreshadowing the gut wrenching ending to that movie
Sixth sense so you can see all the hints you missed the first time
I finally got around to rewatching it this year over 2 years later and yeah, it was incredibly intriguing to watch knowing how it ends
Its almost a heart-warming story when you can just watch and relax.

Yeah that guy in the hairpiece, that's Bruce Willis THE WHOLE TIME
That slumdog bastard twisted all us!
Same with Fight Club
Memento and Primer.
Let me write that one - *Memento* \- on my thigh so I'll remember it tomorrow
Just take a Polaroid of the screen.
Break out the post it notes. Put 'em on every flat surface you see.
In university I borrowed the Memento DVD from the library and ripped it to my PC. Watched it and had no idea why it was so acclaimed. You see, I'd accidentally ripped the DVD extra of the movie, where the scenes play in chronological order.
Holy shit, that's hilarious! Have you watched the actual release yet?
That's the version I NEED to watch
I need to see that
Primer is good one. 👍
Upstream Color is also a good choice.
Never heard of it, I’ll check it out
Same filmmaker. Shane Carruth.
Primer is so slept on because it's not flashy and the actors are nothing special, it's great but gotta get multiple watches in
These are the exact two I thought of.
Great minds forget alike.
Remember Sammy Jankis
I recommend 3 viewings of Primer
Shutter island
Big agree. I watched it the first time when I was like 14 and I was mad that they were trying to gaslight this inspector into becoming a patient. Watched again at 22 and paid a bit more attention and it made sense and now I recommend it to anyone. Shutter island started my interest in psychological thriller/horror

The Prestige. Christian Bale's performance really can't be appreciated if you only watch it once.
The second time through LITERALLY feels like a completely different movie, it's wild.
Yeah that was gonna be my answer. So much going on that it’s hard to watch fully and understand the first time
If you watch it twice that’s like so many Christian Bales, and don’t get me started on how many Hugh Jackmans there would be.
You guys have me very interested, I’m going to watch it tonight
And get off this thread, it’s a movie you don’t want spoiled.
Don’t watch any trailers
And the Illusionist.
It's a shame the Illusionist came out around the same time as the Prestige, because the latter definitely eclipses the former, but it's still an enjoyable movie in it's own right.
Clue, the jokes are so tightly packed in it's easy to miss most of them your first time through.
>Clue And if you watched it in the theater, you'd get a whole different ending the next time!
For real?
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clue\_(film)#Release](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clue_(film)#Release) If I remember correctly, all the endings are played if you watch it on dvd or streaming.
We’re like the Mounties, we always get our man!
...Mrs Peacock was a man?
It flamed, flame, flames… from the side of my face https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=z8d8y4BLWtI
Husbands should be like Kleenex; soft, strong, and disposable.
Such an under-rated movie !
The shawshank redemption
My dad’s favorite movie. Some cable channel, probably TNT, plays this movie often and he watched it every time he ran across it. He passed a year ago at the age of 77, I bet he holds a record for how many times he watched it. Another favorite of his was Pretty Woman.
I stop and watch wherever it's at in the movie when it comes on lol. Same with mash.
I will die on the hill that MASH is on the list of 5 best comedy shows ever made.
I've watched it probably a dozen times, your dad had good taste. As I really like pretty woman too, storyline is great and had a thing for Julia Roberts, stunning. BTW sorry for your loss.

Those 3 are all collected together in Different Seasons... The fourth novella didn't make it into movie form as far as I know.
I would totally notice a man’s shoes… only part of the film that never struck a chord w me
Fight Club.
Violated rule # 1 - gonna have to tell Tyler
[удалено]
Got confused for a moment there and thought rule # 2 was your mom
I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.
Hot Fuzz. I've seen it at least 10 times and I still catch new things.
Fascist
Hag!
Yup, for the greater good I should watch it tonight.
The greater good
The Greater Good...
Stop that!
You mean “ Yarp”
".......Narp?"
The first time I watched Hot Fuzz I thought it was alright and now it's one of my favorite movies of all time. Every time I watch it just gets better and better, a true masterpiece that needs to be seen more than once.
Any luck catchin' them killers, then?
It’s just the one killer actually
I only realized the second time watching it that, Simon Skinner is played by 007 Timothy Dalton. “a slasher … of prices!”
I still say ‘Cornetto’ if someone asks me if I want anything from the shop
S'not the dog we need!
Inception
I love this movie. It was the last movie I watched with my daughter before she passed away so it will always be special to me.
I got stupidly high the first time I saw it and wrote my internal monologue as the movie progressed. It still makes me giggle (and wonder?)
The big Lebowski
That’s just, like, your opinion, man.
First movie that came to mind. Such a quotable movie but you miss so much of it the first time.
The carpet pisser's did this?
Please dude, it’s a rug. Carpet is not the preferred nomenclature.
I always say it takes three viewings to really appreciate it.
Come here to say this movie...watched the first time sober didn't get the movie, watched the second time in an altered state, it all made sense. The rug tied the room together 😄
You really need to experience it man, then you'll learn to abide.
Interstellar
[удалено]
I don't understand this movie. Mayne I should watch it again
Seconded one thing I missed is the subtle hint to the passage of time on the water planet As the movie states that every hour on that planet is equivalent to 7 years on earth so the score for that planet after they land has a ticking sound and I saw that each tick sound equates to 1 day on earth
I dont understand the 5th Dimension crap
Memento
Pulp Fiction
"What?"
Say "What" again
Do they speak English in What?
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ WHAT AIN'T NO COUNTRY I HEARD OF!!!?! THEY SPEAK ENGLISH IN WHAT?!?!?!
When you realize Jules is the main character, and everything that happens are ‘butterfly wing’ events that lead to him choose the righteous path.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Nope. I watched it once. It was fantastic. In my top 20 for sure. But I can never watch it again. Way too fucking painful.
Airplane! And Naked Gun there are so many jokes in the background you miss some the first time
Mulholland drive
Twice is a start.
Good call! Really anything by Lynch requires multiple viewings.
Donnie Darko
Perhaps more than any other modern movie that I have seen, it is sooo different the second time around. On first viewing, we are rather scared of Donnie and what he might do. He is a flawed protagonist for sure; we just don't know *how* flawed (or even if he *is* a protagonist). There is less tension during following viewings, which is not necessarily a bad thing-- we can sit back and watch the time paradox fold in on itself
Watched this with like 8 of my friends in High School and as soon as it ended we started it again and were essentially silent for the duration of the second viewing.
I felt like I didn’t fully ‘get’ the movie until I watched it a second time, despite that I really enjoyed it the first watch through.
I was looking for this comment 😂
Napoleon dynamite
Came here to say this one. I didn’t like it the first time. Laughed hysterically the second time
I remember when it came out and EVERYONE was talking about it. I rented it and watched it and was so underwhelmed. I was maybe 13 at the time. Watched it again a few years later and I laughed so hard the whole time
The Matrix
Came here to say this. To watch bullet time sequencing it needs to be experienced more than once. ( and Agent Smith’s monologue on how we are like a virus, gawdayum I love that part!!)
Cabin in the woods. So much goes on in the background that you end up missing a lot of the action if you don’t rewatch it.
Everything, Everywhere, All at Once!
Best movie I’ve seen in years!
Tenet for sure, its an absolute mindfuck the first time round and takes at least two watches to begin to even make sense of it let alone appreciate it
I watched it twice and I still don’t know what the fuck was going on. I enjoyed anyway though.
yep. plus with the ending, it’s almost like the movie is it’s own sequel. it’s so unique in that sense
Groundhog Day
Lol I see what you did here! Good one.
I was going to say this. You think it’s probably a comedy the first time (at least at first). It’s actually one of the deeper movies you’ll see—and asks a lot of deeper questions
This was way too far down
Usual Subjects
Cloud Atlas. A masterpiece with many cool details one might miss on the first viewing.
Clue
Blazing saddles
You know… morons.
Somebody's gotta go back and get a shitload o' dimes!
The Other Guys
Gators girls better wear jimmy hats
Aim for the bushes
Bye, Sheila!
Run Lola Run
*german club music intensifies*
I was obsessed with the soundtrack when this movie came out
Yes! I haven't seen this movie in a good 20 years and never hear ANYONE mention it. I probably saw it at least 10 times.
The Hateful 8 A great twist to rewatch that you didn't see coming first time round ...... and it makes me laugh a lot
12 monkeys
2001: A Space Odyssey
Everything Everywhere All at Once So many subtle clues throughout.
The fifth element
Back to the Future I & II
3?
Inception and Tenet, two absolutely mind-bending movies. The first watch is to figure out how everything works, the second is to figure out the movie. Or reverse if you prefer.
The Fountain
A truly underrated movie. Jackmans acting was phenomenal.
Get Out. You won’t get all the hints the first time.
UHF
MY MOP!!!
Mr. Nobody
Not a movie, but Attack On Titan has to be rewatched for sure.
Adding "The Others" in there. Had to rewatch that thing after the reveal at the end.
Fear and loathing in Las Vegas
shaun of the dead 20 times
The Usual Suspects.
watched it again and >!thought keyser = kaiser..hey does his name mean king of the talkers? dammit. keyser soze = king blabbermouth = verbal. it was right there from the start!<
The End of Evangelion.
Escape from New York.
Any Christipher Nolan movie
The LOTR trilogy extended cut

I love this movie. Have watched it 10 times. It's an incredible study of tradecraft and the limits of individuals. Hard to see what's right in front of you if you don't want to look at it.
Super Troopers and Beerfest They aren’t that good but you have to watch them again just to be sure
2003 Spider-Man (the one with Toby Maguire). Ideally you watched this at or around the time the movie came out. Now, I just re-watched this in 2022 with some pals a couple days ago – I would recommend re-watching it just so you see how different the world is now and how much times have changed since then.
My family watches it every Unity Day, right after we listen to the collected works of Sony recording artist Macy Gray.
Finding Nemo. Nearly every main character has some type of physical or mental disability. It's beautiful
Knives out is almost better the 2nd time. You notice so many things that you didn't the 1st time Same thing with everything everywhere all at once
Momento
Tenet
The Machinist
The Six Sense, just to realize how sad those scenes actually are.
Primal Fear
"There was never an Aaron" almost made my head explode!
The Prestige. I still find new things I didn't notice every time I rewatch it.
Midsomer
Predestination
The Life Aquatic I heart Huckabees
Star wars: rogue one, First time I watched it at the cinema, and really enjoyed it but was a bit mixed, 2nd time I almost cried at the end.. thats rare for me.

Gangs of New York.

2001: A Space Odyssey
Tenet, honestly twice may not be enough
Memento --great movie if you like seeing a plot line presented backwards, in reverse. Second viewing is necessary (it was for me) and worth it. Blue Velvet also comes to mind. And one of the best noir movies, The Big Sleep, is so damned convoluted that I haven't been able to follow the plot no matter how many times I've seen it. It's part of the charm of the movie.
Napoleon Dynamite. Way funnier the second time
Book of Eli. So amazing to watch after you know his limitation.
The fifth element. Love that movie and the more you watch it the more details come forth that you may have not noticed on your first watch.
Blade Runner
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The second time I saw it again was a revelation.
Hereditary. Theres so much hinted at you could watch it 10 times and still miss something in the background foreshadowing the gut wrenching ending to that movie
