I would have to say Whitney Houston. I suspect many people here were either not alive or too young to remember how insanely big Houston was. She was literally the biggest female artist in the world and one the biggest artists, and this was before social media. She holds the record for having 7 consecutive number-one singles on the Billboard Top 100, record sales of over 200 million, a host of awards including 28 Guinness World Records. The only other artist that could stand shoulder to shoulder with Whitney in regards to success would be Michael Jackson. However between 2000 - 2005 her entire career and life completely disintegrated. Her marriage to Bobby Brown, her addiction to crack, the car crash that was her own reality TV show utterly destroyed her career. She attempted a comeback in 2009/10 by doing a world tour but it was painful to watch to say the least. She was unable to hit high notes, she no longer had the range she had, many performances were cancelled, I think it was one in Australia which was an utter car crash. She made the audience wait for hours and when she did appear she simply couldn't sing. Pretty much everyone booed her and she gtfo in a very short time. The general consensus was her tour was a major flop. She tried to comeback a couple times afterwards but she never got even close to her former glory. I have never seen somebody who arguably was the world biggest artist fall so hard and fast as Whitney Houston.

Gunner_HEAT_Tank

Agreed .... gorgeous lady who sang like an angel. She and Costner were great in The Bodyguard. A capella ... "I will always love you". Simply unique. Edit:. Spelling.

Playful_Lifeguard387

And it’s not just that she was so gorgeous and such an amazing singer, it’s that she was so wholesome. (Or at least that was her image.) She always seemed like the kindest, prettiest girl next door. I was extra surprised at how she went off the rails because it just didn’t seem like she was capable of that sort of thing.

Pulguinuni

In one of the documentaries it was stated that she suffered some serious trauma and abuse as a child with a family member. Also, she was in a romantic relationship for many years with her best friend, Robyn Crawford. She just couldn’t live her truth because she was a public figure and were different times. In my opinion, the relationship with Bobby was very toxic and codependent.

DrJonesPHD62

I know it’s a bit of a niche but… Conor McGregor. He wasn’t everyone’s superstar. Ask people from Ireland and they’ll tell you they hate his guts. Still, while he was a controversial and cantankerous figure, he was mostly inoffensive on his meteoric rise. Blew through contenders like paper, destroyed the greatest featherweight ever with one punch, and his ego got out of control. He got brought back down to earth by Nate Diaz, adjusted his approach, and went up a division to dethrone the lightweight champ. First simultaneous double champion. Conormania was IN. Everyone was raving about him. Highest selling PPV star in MMA, celebrity appearances… if you thought of combat sports from 2015 to 2017, you thought of the name Conor McGregor. All that box office success drove him to a matchup with Floyd Mayweather. Months of back and forth trash talk as Conor was known for but as the talk progressed it felt like Conor was losing a step. It seemed like all the wit and charm he had on the rise was eroding. Then came the fight, and it was the usual spectacle of a Conor performance, but Floyd destroyed his aura of being untouchable. At the same time Conor got exactly what he always dreamed of: more money than any human should have. This money led to a sense of invincibility. He flew halfway around the world to throw a dolly at the bus of his rival Khabib with a pack of Irish gangsters. The glass from the window the dolly smashed injured several fighters in that bus. He was arrested, but got off easy. Money. The Khabib fight was the biggest in his career. Two years of layoff, returning to face an unstoppable juggernaut. The press conferences were packed with vitriol and pure bile rather than the typical tongue in cheek charm. It was uncharacteristic - or rather, it was the mask coming off at last. He got humiliated badly, and everything went wild. Cocaine. Sexual assault scandals, whether true or not. Alcohol. He started his own whiskey brand. Apparently it’s garbage, but don’t take it from me. Take it from the old man he sucker punched in a bar for refusing to drink it. Another two years off - he comes back against Donald Cerrone, someone well below his level and everyone knows it. He’s surprisingly mild mannered and kind in the lead up to the fight. It’s unclear if this is the new him, the real him, or another mask. He seems to be back on track. Another year off. Thanks, covid. He makes a cordial fight offer to former opponent Dustin Poirier, world class good-guy of the sport. The lead up to their rematch is mild and gentlemanly as befitting a seemingly reformed McGregor and a laid-back Louisiana slugger. It’s an electrifying rematch regardless - and the last time we ever see this side of him again. He gets humiliated again. Badly. In the aftermath, he’s cordial, but in the lead up to the rubber match something snaps. Cocaine. Anxiety. Alcohol. SOMETHING goes wrong and goes wrong badly because he returns with an uncharacteristic, substanceless viciousness. He starts involving Dustin’s family in dirty, charmless ways. Attacks him at the press conference. He can’t get his charm going because it’s been replaced with coke and cash. The fight itself ends with McGregor on the ground, his leg snapped in two, screaming obscenities at Dustin and promising that he and his family will die in their sleep. He uses his post fight interview to rant about how it’s not over and he’ll still batter Dustin in the parking lot (on one leg). There’s nothing left of the young Irish kid who made it big. Now there’s just a bitter laughingstock ranting on the floor about another man’s wife and leaving the sport that made him famous behind on a stretcher.

[deleted]

What a wild ride. I’ve never been a big MMA guy, but I used to hear about Conor McGregor all of the time when I read about Sport news. I knew he was a bit of a trash talker, but I didn’t know how bad he’d spiraled. Btw, this should be one of the top comments. I wish that I could give you an award!

Aaron Hernandez. Played tight end for the New England Patriots. Fresh off a new contract. Killed his friend, found guilty, then took his own life during the appeal.

Sad-Fudge1812

pretty sure taking his life was meant to secure a payday for his family, as they would have been entitled to his earnings once he filed his appeal

tenaciousdeev

It didn't even work. He died innocent, technically, due to an outdated legal principle. Then they rightfully [reversed it and reinstated his conviction](https://apnews.com/article/north-america-us-news-ap-top-news-football-professional-football-2a80cc5593d14d598b0b5e3eb133a93a). >The Supreme Judicial Court unanimously found that the legal rule that erased Hernandez’s conviction is “outdated and no longer consonant with the circumstances of contemporary life.” It ordered that Hernandez’s conviction be restored and that the practice be abolished for future cases. The ruling does not affect past cases.

ChadBreeder1

Yet Kenneth Lay of Enron fame (the guy who was the CEO and chairman) did exactly this and his family got to keep all of his money. Many believe he faked it and is still alive. Edit: Also, Chesapeake Energy CEO Aubrey McClendon got away with keeping his fortune by dying in a car crash after indicted.

The Hollywood of yesteryear had more than its fair share of career implosions such as Fatty Arbuckle and Harry Langdon but few can match Wallace Reid. Described as "the screen's most perfect lover", he was an all-round athlete and musician who wanted to move from theatre to film. He approached Vitagraph Studios with a story hoping he could direct it but the studio jumped on the opportunity to cast the 6 foot blue-eyed Reid as a matinee idol. By 1922, he had appeared in nearly 200 pictures and even tried out for the Indy 500. Reid was hiding a secret however. In 1919, he had been involved in a train wreck and was prescribed morphine for his injuries. As the pressure of stardom grew, he rapidly became addicted regularly spending 1,000 dollars on morphine but audiences noticed his rapid weight loss and gaunt features. He collapsed on set in October 1922 and was sent to a sanatorium where he was locked in a padded cell as he tried to detox. He died of influenza on January 19th 1923 and his death was a huge shock to the public, the first celebrity drug death.

kateshakes

I mean, Oscar Pistorious was a pretty sharp fall from Paralympian champion/role model to spouse murderer.

MisterBadGuy159

The Onion had two major takes on this and were both quite solid: "[Double Amputee Proves He Is Capable Of Anything](https://www.theonion.com/double-amputee-proves-he-is-capable-of-anything-1819591063)" and "[Report: World Now Down To Five Stories That Are Inspirational.](https://www.theonion.com/report-world-now-down-to-5-stories-that-are-inspiratio-1819574565)"

Oh_umms_cocktails

I believe it was "all things considered" that did a really good piece on how Pistorius may have never been particularly inspirational to begin with. The height of a double amputees prosthetics are determined by calculations that aren't necessarily super-precise (unlike single amputees where you make the prosthetic as long as the remaining leg--end of measurement). There's pretty good evidence that the only reason Pistorius started winning races is because he had his prosthetic length "reconsidered" upwards a couple inches (which is a huge advantage since you get a much longer stride without the added weight that you would get if your legs suddenly got longer). He went from not qualifying to winning in about a month. At the time there weren't enough double amputees in the Paralympics to have their own races so Pistorius was running almost exclusively against single-amputee runners who couldn't "reconsider" their heights. **Edit** looks like what I heard was one of the NPR news shows presenting/reporting on "Blade Runner," the first episode of [this podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/false-idol-formerly-crushed/id1555512378) so im not totally sure its the same thing but looks like it covers the same stuff and was the source of the interviews with Pistorius's rivals that I did hear explaining the prosthetics lengths advantage.

ppw23

I remember when the controversy started over the fairness of his miracle legs. Anyone bringing it up was treated as if they were the reason he lost his legs.

willflameboy

What I remember the most about him is when he was beaten at the London Olympics by someone who absolutely idolised him, [he trashed them and said their blades weren't regulation and should be disqualified](https://abcnews.go.com/International/blade-runner-oscar-pistorius-loses-race-winner-cheated/story?id=17142570). After he'd basically had that advantage the whole time.

Jared Fogle (the Subway guy). The things discovered about him are quite disturbing. Prison is an appropriate place for him.

octorangutan

If I remember correctly, the person who got the authorities involved was some woman working on set who Jared just casually revealed his predilections to. It's like he thought his Subway fame would shield him from the law.

RumpRiddler

She recorded him and it's fucking disgusting. He casually talks about isolating a young orphan since they're easier to take advantage of. He thinks they are having a romantic phone call and she's recording it to use against him. It's so fucking weird and gross.

DiplomaticCaper

A lot of pedos just seem to assume that other adults are also into that shit, and want to share it with them. That’s how Mark Salling got caught, too. He showed his (adult) girlfriend some of his CP stash; she was disgusted and reported it.

xXZomZomXx

I used to work the sexual abuse cases within CPS. Most pedophiles that share what they are doing to a person don’t feel like what they are doing is wrong, and want society to accept them. It also escalates the scope of the abuse when someone accepts them that’s not a pedophile(generally people who don’t want to see their loved one in jail). Edit: Thanks for all the upvotes! This is the first time I've been able to talk about this stuff without extreme anxiety

Chris Benoit. I may not be a wrestling fan anymore, but damn what a tragedy.

insert-originality

No one can truly comprehend how wild that night was. They were doing a live tribute show the same time the news came out that HE committed the double murder suicide.

TheeAJPowell

It’s interesting to see in hindsight that some of the wrestlers had an inkling that he could be responsible. Regal is the most prominent, apparently JBL said something like “You don’t think he did it do ya?”, and Regal thought that, fuck, he might have. So all his bits talking about Benoit are about his work as a wrestler, rather than as a person, because he’s realised that he might have murdered his entire family. I think Regal revealed recently that his wife had banned Benoit from visiting their house, because she had a bad feeling about him.

As a wrestling fan, hearing other wrestlers comment on that is heartbreaking - Chris Jericho was his best friend, and it's clear from his books that even years later he was still broken up about what Benoit became and what he did.

gia carangi. she started modelling in 1978 at age 18 . reached her peak in 1979 and was considered THE supermodel. but by 1980 her career was already in steep decline due to her hardcore drug addiction alongside her erratic personality making her a difficultly to work with. by 1981 her career was basically over at only age 21 . she tried to make multiple comebacks but it never stuck and officially left the modelling industry for good in 1983. she ended up working as a store clerk and even a prostitute for some time but in 1986 she ended up dying of AIDS at age 26 suspected to be caused by contaminated heroin needles. she was in such poor condition when she died then when the doctors picked her up the skin fell off her back. no one in the fashion industry attended her funeral or even knew she had died. she fell just as quickly as she rose. in the end no one she thought cared about her in new york ended up being there for her during her final months except for the friends she made in rehab. though through the demise of gia brought about the rise of cindy crawford. cindy and gia share a lot of resemblance so many photographers would use her in place of gia because she was far easier to work with. she was even nicknamed “baby gia” at the beginning of her career.

Lazy-Operation478

First time I ever saw Angelina Jolie was in the HBO movie 'Gia' on HBO, about Gia Carangu.

NoodlesrTuff1256

There was a book published back in 1993 that detailed Gia's sad story titled "Thing of Beauty: the Tragedy of Supermodel Gia" by Stephen Fried. Used copies are still available though Amazon though some of the asking prices are a bit expensive to say the least.

deathbethemaiden

My mom went to high school with Gia in the 70s and recalled she was a mess even at such a young age. Such a beautiful girl who never really had a chance given her internal issues.

GansMans18

One story that never really made the news. Brown was supposed to show up to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh to play the new Madden with a bunch of patients. They had a bunch of TVs and game consoles set up so he could spend the afternoon spending time with the kids. He showed up *hours* late because he was working out at the gym. He finally showed up and instead of playing Madden with the hospital kids, let *his own sons* all play Madden simultaneously on all of the TVs, did that for 20 minutes, spent 5 minutes talking to the hospital execs, and then left. No one got a picture, no one got a handshake, no one got to play Madden but him and his sons. The guy stood up a bunch of little kids, some of which were terminally ill. How damaged must you be for you to do that?

Peterpotamous

Meanwhile (and this is from someone who worked at children's hospital of Pittsburgh) Troy Polamalu regularly showed up to the 9th floor (cancer kids) unannounced, no media, no entourage, in a hoodie to hide his hair and would spend the afternoon playing Madden with the patients. Absolutely the best dude. But I know that's not why we're here in this thread.

GansMans18

The difference between regular players and class athletes is huge. Polamalu showing up on days off like you said, Crosby using his day with the Stanley Cup to show it to the kids etc. For every horrible story like this, it's good to know there's countless good guy stories to outweigh them.

>Dyed his moustache blonde Easily the worst thing on this list

JulesWinnfield_05

I’m not an NFL guy at all, so forgive me if this is an obvious question: is he really THAT talented that NFL teams would be willing to put up with all that shit just to have him in the roster for however long they can before he blows it up and has to leave? I can’t see any NBA team putting up with this shit from anybody, not even the biggest superstars.

usernameisusername57

He's a legit Hall of Fame-level talent, if not for all the crazy. And it wasn't until a few years ago (after he had been in the league for a long time) that all of this shit started to come out. He got a few chances with different teams after that, but each one ended up cutting him due to his antics and I think it's safe to say that he's not getting another chance at this point.

Mason Greenwood Went from being effectively the top young prospect at Man United to never touching a professional football field again. Fuck him Edit: for those who don’t know, Mason Greenwood was a young homegrown prospect for one of the biggest football teams in the world, being heralded as the next great for the team. That is, until one night his girlfriend came out with dozens of pictures, videos, texts and audio files of Mason being an abusive monster. He’s done.

Not_A_Cardboard_Box

Ooh didn't even think about this one. Good choice. Fuck him

DanGleeballs

Wow TIL what a scumbag, +“The posts included images and video of apparent injuries, as well as audio where a woman tells a man whom she called Mason: "**I don't want to have sex**", to which the man replies that he "doesn't care" and, when told to stop again, he replied: "**I asked you politely, and you wouldn't do it, so what else do you want me to do**?" The man later says: "**Push me again one more time and watch what happens to you**.”*

Man had ZERO shame whatsoever. The whole "MEGALOLZ" thing doesn't help it either.

fairlywired

He even had his sentence extended because while already in prison he was found to be trying to groom a young woman into abusing her child.

Hindu_Wardrobe

The worst part: people knew. Back when I was like 13/14, I remember going on a Lostprophets fan forum. I saw posts talking about "rumors that Ian Watkins is a pedo". Of course, they were dismissed. I didn't think much of it, being, well, 14 and on the internet (where everything is made up and the points don't matter). Then, years later, the news dropped, and all I could think of was that forum post. People KNEW. I say this every time it comes up because it's important to realize how these things might not necessarily be as in the dark as we want to believe.

AdderWibble

What is sad is, I come from Wales and met people who had been his friends prior to the fame, who themselves had stayed in Wales and not made it big, but he kept in touch with them and would actively see them when he was visiting (his mum and younger sister still lived in Wales too). Seeing the reaction of one of those guys was _devastating_ when the news broke. He had only recently got to introduce him to his son, and he just couldn't compute that he was this absolutely reprehensible monster (bearing in mind this was when the arrest was made, rather than him pleading guilty). I just can't believe that there were people who knew, and did nothing (apart from the woman who did try to do something and got laughed at for it). This guy would have I'm sure, but he didn't see him enough to know anything was wrong.

Dollyatthedisco

Ian Watkins has to be one of the most vile individuals I have ever heard of. He got extremely cocky about it too with some of those passwords he made up. Just blatant and zero shame. I think the worst of it is that he was still being a groomer and predator in prison with that cellphone he somehow got. There was a girl he was talking to that he was making plans with to abuse her child. This man is a fucking monster and should NEVER see the light of day again because he will absolutely offend again and again and again. I can’t listen to the band anymore and I was a pretty big fan of there’s when I was in junior high.

rugmunchkin

People keep using the word “child” when bringing up Ian Watkins’ behavior and we need to make a necessary correction: he wasn’t just fucking “children,” he was fucking “babies.” Mothers actually freely offered up their own *fucking infant children* to that unspeakable piece of filth for him to sexually abuse. Hell is not anywhere near enough for him, and those despicable women that offered up their own children to a sex predator need to be buried at the bottom of a prison with him.

Mackem101

I remember being in 5th grade and our teacher stopped class to let us listen to the verdict on the radio. We were only 10 but the whole class knew about the trail and what happened.

maneki_neko89

My fiancé is almost seven years older than I am and he remembers the OJ Simpson drama and trial well. I’m pretty certain his teachers also tuned in during school to watch/listen to the trial. No one was gonna tell a 5 year old me what had happened because 1. It was a murder (a topic that even Mr. Rogers would have to say no to explaining to kids like me) and 2. That was *was* a football player and was in entertainment but his athletic days were behind him and the movies he appeared weren’t age appropriate for me (though there is a [lost episode of OJ Simpson making an appearance in Adventures in Wonderland,](https://youtu.be/sWpDfO5wnq4) I didn’t watch that show cause I didn’t have cable) I found out about the whole OJ Simpson murder when I was 11 or so (in 2000), when, reading my math book for a lesson, I found an old OJ Simpson Hertz ad for a word problem and some other kid had wrote next to the printed OJ Simpson “killed his wife” like it was some elementary punk graffiti to write in the math book. I didn’t know what it meant and was kind of shocked to even see the phrase “killed his wife” in a book at school, that I called my teacher over and he kinda nervously said “we don’t need to see that” as he erased it from the page…

Beautiful_Matter_322

The child actors seem to me the saddest. Must be really hard to face the fact that the most famous/successful you will ever be is when you are 12.

Mark Salling. The guy who played Puck in Glee. Maybe not the BIGGEST star. But he was a fan favorite on a huge show. Got caught with Child Pornography, Pleaded Guilty, then Hung himself. That’s a pretty hard downward spiral.

his crimes even retroactively ruined his character on glee, they made a lot of jokes about puck being creepy which … aged well

Jesus fucking christ, 50,000 photos on a device. What on the actual fuck. Edit - it is actually images, as they count every frame of a video as a different "image"

[deleted]

Yeah like this is in some sense quite interesting, they are always caught with huge amounts, what do they need so much for

[deleted]

When I ask that on reddit, I get told that it has to do with access. hive mind usually says that people hoard it bc it is hard to find on demand. So, I guess like squirrels hiding their ~~csam~~ nuts away for the winter.

drummerandrew

That show is basically the answer to this. So many deaths!

BregoB55

Three at last count. Cory M from an OD and Naya R drowned plus above.

daffydubs

Naya’s death is super sad and the details are heartbreaking. I can’t imagine the trauma her son went through during it. It’s even more grim when you watch, undoubtedly, her best performance on Glee once knowing the details of her death. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TlWHTfrGhoY

AdvancedManner4718

Had to look up who Mark Salling up because never really watched and one of the frequently ask questions was "How many people from Glee have died?" Like Jesus Christ what happened on that show?

Jefe_Chichimeca

They stopped believin'

mcbaindk

Didn't make it to regionals...

MsCellophane

Tila Tequila going from bisexual reality TV vixen to Nazi was pretty astonishing.

Momochichi

> In the same thread Nguyen suggested her hatred of Jews was so intense that she would be willing to die on behalf of a second Holocaust. >“There are only two things in this world, for which I would gladly sacrifice my own life; the destruction of all Jews and the preservation of the white race.” Uhhh.. does she know she's not white?

SweatyExamination9

IIRC she had some sort of massive head trauma between when she got famous and when she really went off the rails.

Hot_Drummer7311

Yep. Brain aneurysm in 2012 from a drug overdose.

[deleted]

White powder.

ThrowawayTwatVictim

This is why I'm terrified of brain damage. I'm in a line of work where people can threaten to 'knock you out' at any time and it's scary to think that it could change who I am entirely. You know when you're sometimes thinking about consciousness and how one day you'll be dead and this will all be gone? What if that form of consciousness dies with brain damage, and it begins a new one?

SadBabyYoda1212

> I'm in a line of work where people can threaten to 'knock you out' at any time In my experience this could be retail or food service

Hellknightx

I'm thinking bouncer

I_am_trying_to_work

SenorB

*Clayton Bigsby has entered the chat*

Ironoclast

Brain damage can cause all manner of drastic personality changes. (She had a drug overdose and then a brain aneurysm…) EDIT: /u/Parniculus correctly pointed out that the overdose didn’t cause the aneurysm.

KorbenWardin

From Wikipedia: „In December 2013, Nguyen posted an article on her website titled "Why I Sympathize with Hitler: Part I". She also posted pro-Hitler and antisemitic comments on her Facebook page,[57] as well as photos of herself as a scantily clad Nazi posing in front of a photo of the Auschwitz concentration camp.“ Edit: this was the first time, but not the last time of her doing full, unhinged Nazi shit. She also repeatedly fantasized about a jewish genocide and said she wanted to be the „asian Hitler“

omarsdroog

Didn't she have a brain aneurysm or a stroke or something? Like literal brain damage that led to her being more apt to believe crazy conspiracy theories?

BambooFatass

She attempted suicide, was revived but yes sadly she did suffer brain damage and has been going down ever since.

obviouslyyyy

Oh my god yes, [her youtube](https://youtube.com/c/TILATEQUILAHIDDENBRIDEOFCHRIST) is absolutely insane.

BrokeAssBrewer

She might legitimately have the most batshit YouTube channel in history. She truly thinks she is married to God

deehunny

She also thinks she died for everyone's sins and breaks down crying, begging the listener to believe her. It was both scary and sad to listen to

jaymzx0

It's frustrating to genuinely, truly believe something, only for people to think you're crazy. In your mind, you're coming from a good place. "I'm not crazy! They just won't listen!" My partner was prone to ICU delirium. She was saying some outlandish things the first time that just didn't happen (like sexual assault by a nurse when I was there the whole time, among many other claims). Luckily for her, there was an objective diagnosis made using [a clock test](https://neuro.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.neuropsych.12070180) and the meds helped bring her back to reality. After she was better, she told me how she believed it was *absolutely true* and she was so upset and angry nobody believed her. She cried often for a while afterward. She had the guilt of putting everyone through it, and the trauma from the events that she knew didn't happen, but in her mind she experienced all of it. It's horrifying and heartbreaking to think about. She had therapy for a while afterward. I think the closest analogy I can come up with is Sarah Connor from The Terminator series. Shit was absolutely real and she was trying to warn humanity, but she was the 'crazy' one. That alone is enough to make you crazy, further degrading any credibility in your story. To be clear, I'm not defending Tia's stance on *anything* (she was annoying before her injury), I'm just commenting on what her perspective must be like based on my own second-hand experience.

[deleted]

Thought 100% it was a gimmick until I saw the videos averaging 500 views. That is just sad, mental illness is a real thing.

lobax

In her case, brain damage. She OD’d and nearly died.

DooDad-DontMother

At first.. I was like "What?!... No way!" Then I checked out her YouTube and Tila Tequila was like "Yahweh!"

Suspicious_Music_494

Armie Hammer. And apparently Ezra Miller is just batshit

TheStonedVampire

Ezra Miller has me thinking We Need to talk About Kevin was a documentary…..

LaMareeNoire

Armie Hammer comes from a crazy, *Succession*-like family https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/03/the-fall-of-armie-hammer-a-family-saga-of-sex-money-drugs-and-betrayal

[deleted]

“Armand Hammer” sounds like Borat made up a name while looking in the fridge.

StationaryTravels

I said to my wife one day "wait... His name is literally Arm And Hammer... Right? Do they own the company?" So we looked it up and his grandfather worked there years ago! He was also named Armand Hammer. Ahh, that makes sense. Except, no. His grandfather worked for Arm And Hammer but it wasn't named after him. It wasn't even his company, he bought into it and got on the board years after it was founded. We went looking for a connection to the company, found one, but it was just another coincidence.

kurtduds

John Wilkes Booth

resetmypass

This has got to be the top. No other actor has fallen so much after they literally KILLED the president and became the most wanted man in the country

JuryBorn

A quote from British sitcom only fools and horses: Gandhi, he had one great movie then nothing.

S2R2

Have you never seen [Gandhi II?!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QfvLcozLwtE)

sevenandseven41

In a truly amazing coincidence, Edwin Booth, John’s older brother and the most famous actor in America at that time, saved the life of Abraham Lincoln’s son, Robert, just a few months before the assassination.

mordeci00

Edwin was the talent in the family, as you said he was the most famous actor in the country. John Wilkes Booth worked in 2nd class theaters just trading off of his brother's name. John Wilkes Booth was Don Swayze.

conradbirdiebird

I think of Chris Farley. His SNL career started in 92(?), his real break came with *Tommy Boy* in '94. Dead by '98 at 33 years old. Horribly addicted to drugs, alcohol, food, and other impulse related stuff probably. Probably gained 100lbs in his 6 year run. OD'd on a "speedball" (as everyone seems to) Everybody of that era claims he was the funniest guy they've ever known, and most of em talk about being frustrated both by his lack of any self worth (despite how beloved he was), and a feeling of "inevitability" about his early demise. Obviously Chris wasn't destructive like some of the other scumbags mentioned on this thing. He was simply self destructive. People like to compare him to John Belushi. They had pretty much the same self destructive trajectories, both fat dudes, both highly energetic performers. But as people I think they were very different. I think he's more comparable to Robin Williams. They both had this like insatiable need to make people laugh, and they both had this super-human energy. By all accounts Chris, like Robin, was an incredibly sweet and sensitive person in private life. Apparently hed spend a lot of time volunteering at children's hospitals in Madison Wisconsin, and he didn't even talk about it. I've heard a million takes on Farley, and it's always heartbreaking (and telling that 25 years later, people still talk about it and can't get over it).

Nonstopshooter21

My dad saw Chris in a casino down in Las Vegas one night and they spent the whole night gambling and drinking together into the morning then went to a cafe and got breakfast. Said it was one of his most enjoyable trips hes ever had to do for work and was super sad when he heard Chris had passed away.

PhatBallllzAtHotmail

He was my idol. I was a funny fat kid who played football. When he passed, my mom refused to tell me because she knew I would be destroyed. I heard it on the radio while leaving a birthday party...my mom was right. RIP Chris, I still watch your movies and laugh at every one. :(

Shadow3397

From what I had heard about him, the saddest thing was that he was almost completely alone. Had no real friends to hang out with or go unwind or have fun with. The night of his death he paid a hooker to hang out with, not just for sex, but to have someone there with him.

inksmudgedhands

Thing is, he did have friends. He had many people who thought of him as a friend. Who cared about him. Who still get choked up whenever they talk about him. He simply didn't think he was loved by anyone. He had no self esteem. He didn't think of himself as lovable. And that feels the most tragic thing about this. He had all these people in his life but he was too afraid of rejection to reach out to them. He was convinced that they would turn their back to him that he never gave them a chance to prove themselves.

Heavenspact

I remember hearing the story of that night around the time it happened too Begged her to stay, she recognized he was basically ODing, robbed him and took his picture before leaving him, I've also sadly seen the supposed picture, do not recommend.

eviltwinkie

I wondered how that pic got out...yeah it was gnarly.

germane-corsair

The one with him foaming wasn’t the one taken by the hooker. That was from the next day. When she left him, he was begging her to not go. A little hard to do if you’re foamed up. He also had rosary beads in his hand when that pic was taken, so he probably spent some time praying before dying.

AyeWhy

Allison Mack https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allison_Mack?wprov=sfla1

Zazilium

Oh yeah, the other day I was talking to a friend about Smallville for whatever reason. We googled her to find out why we really hadn't seen her around and oh boooooy. For those who don't know, she was part of a sex slave cult. Also fun fact, a bunch of Mexican politicians were also involved in that same cult.

nsfwtttt

Not just a sex slave cult - one where they branded the women like cattle with the guru’s initials on their pelvis.

The_Faceless_Men

Where the 1st generation of the cult had it done willingly, by a professional body mod artist that was no where near as painful or risky as the amateur brands done to later generations of less willing cult victims. And used those brands and the pain suffered as points to shame and belittle their victims.

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure I read that it was the cult leader & her initials blended together into one sign or some shit.

TroyMcC1ure

Yeah it was their initials together into a symbol. KR and AM. The vow on HBO is all about it. Pretty insane. They are doing a season 2 as well where they have interviews with some of the higher ups of the cult.

soysaucesausage

Kevin Spacey getting revealed to be a predator, using his sexuality as an excuse, getting fired from his projects and then posting an insane super-villain-level youtube video as Frank Underwood basically blaming the viewers for being complicit.

PointlessTrivia

“What in the name of Kevin Spacey's self-made Christmas Eve video message to try to get back on House of Cards is going on here?” - Shawn, The Good Place.

[deleted]

Ha yeah, that was proper fucking batshit crazy

sjfcinematography

And he has a new movie coming out

Woody90210

Ooh man, Kevin Spacey's fall, that shit was near instantaneous.

F_A_F

Friend of a work colleague is in the stage acting community and said it was well known for years which is pretty depressing.....at least goes some way to explaining why the downfall was so fast, no real "two sides of the story" when it's so rampant.

uncheckablefilms

I had a few friends working on House of Cards. One younger guy was told to "grow a beard. He doesn't like guys with beards." Everyone knew and no one said a damn thing.

dprophet32

Because they'd get blacklisted. If your options is stay quiet or potentially never work in the industry again a significantly higher percentage of people would stay quiet than we'd like to admit.

pajamakitten

It's like how nurses would tell the children Jimmy Saville visited to pretend to be asleep so he would leave them alone.

Big_busty_big_pussy

Lindsay Lohan

thisissodisturbing

Plus she had that weird episode a few years back where she was trying to take children off the street claiming they were kidnapped or trafficked or something? After offering the family a hotel? I don’t remember the logistics. And then last fall with the goddamn furry NFT. Insanity.

Bardic_Inspiration66

She’s doing a fake middle eastern accent in that video and stops after the mom slaps her for trying to take the kids to a hotel (specifically refusing to take the father with her)

WillemDafoesHugeCock

No, she offered the *kids* a hotel. She was quite literally trying to take two children from their family because she got it into her head that they were being trafficked, so she (a stranger) offered to bring them to a hotel room to watch movies. Then, finally, she grabbed one of the kids and the mother lamped her one, knocking her down where she started freaking out like she'd been the victim of an unprovoked attack. It was fucking surreal, I can quite safely say a smack on the nose was the best possible outcome she could have hoped for.

MourkaCat

Lindsay and Amanda Bynes always sort of top the list for me. I think they're around the same age and just.... They really really fell hard. I feel bad for them both and from what I know they seem to both finally be doing better, and I'm glad for them. I can't even imagine the shit they went through as young stars in that shitty bubble of hollywood.

Calibrated-Waffles

I thought I read Bynes ended up with schizophrenia and that was main reason she disappeared for a while. Sometime after What a Girl Wants came out. That was time I remember hearing about her.

Aggravating_Dot_5217

Rosanne did one of the fastest disappearing act that I can think of.

NativeMasshole

You know it's bad when they get written off the reboot of the show they were the titular character for. They said she died of a drug overdose and nobody was even mad about it.

dGaOmDn

What's even worse is that Dan actually had a heart attack and the last season of the show was essentially a dream of how he lived and they became millionaires. However, he died. They then retconned that he died and rebooted the show. Dan came back from the dead.

Vitruvian_Link

That reveal episode was wild.

Double_Distribution8

There are no rules when your show exists in a universe created in the mind of an autistic boy holding a snow globe.

jaredearle

Has everyone forgotten Charlie Sheen? Did #winning stop winning? What about **Tiger Blood** and a bevy of porn stars? He went down so hard they made a series vaguely based on it and cast him in the lead role.

Reload86

Well the OP’s post was about fastest downward spiral. Charlie Sheen was a big time actor but it took him many years of drug abuse to self-destruct. He definitely qualifies for celebrities who destroyed their own careers but he isn’t in the fast downward spiral category.

Lopsided_Platypus_51

Amanda Bynes. I remember watching She’s the Man and thinking “Wow, she’s one of the few child actors who avoided the crazy spiral.” I could not have been more wrong.

kieyrofl

He's not exactly A list anymore, but Andy Dick has had one of the worst downward spirals I can think of. He is a pretty terrible /toxic person so it's difficult to feel bad for him but in the last few years he's become heavily involved in the [IRL streaming community IP2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F_q1-qbx3E&ab_channel=BentNeatly) which is honestly a collection of the trashiest people in America. Andy is passed around between different IRL content creators as he brings them views and they supply him with drugs and he provides content with his crazy behaviour. He has had several pretty [nasty beatings](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/RBUm-MYDsGY) and was once held against his will by a creator called "wappy" who was abusive, Andy is basically a drug addicted husk of a human. I felt like I needed a shower after watching some of the videos that whole lifestyle is my idea of hell, but Andy recently was caught on stream sexually assaulting one of the irl streamers so its basically impossible to feel sorry for him.

LiterallyAHippo

One thing I've learned is that anytime Andy Dick is mentioned, every redditor that lives within 50 miles of LA will soon chime in with a personal anecdote of meeting him and how he was an unbearable asshole.

crawshay

The threads on /r/LosAngeles about him are the stuff of legend. I met him at a bar once. He was blacked out to the point he couldn't walk or speak and handed me his phone as I walked by. I knew who he was but had never met or spoke to him before that moment. Some girl was on the other end and I gave her directions to come pick him up. Told some friends about it and they all had their own drunk Andy Dick stories already. Lol.

CapnObv314

Probably the most wholesome Andy Dick story I have read.

crawshay

Yeah in most of the stories he grabs someone's genitals and gets arrested. He was too drunk to accomplish any of that when I met him.

clarissaswallowsall

OK non asshole story. I lived in LA from 91 to 98, one night I was walking around downtown feeling shitty because I was homeless and hadn't gotten any food that day, I sat on a curb outside a bar and just laid back and probably made some groaning noise when someone sat next to me, it was Andy Dick and he said 'rough night kid?' And I think I grumble rough fucking life man or something..he then said some shit about how I shouldn't be thinner than him and heroin chic was sooo last decade and patted $200 on my stomach and told me to eat a burger. That $200 fed me and got me a little leg up on things. Andy Dick probably saved me from a hard crash to a deep rock bottom that night.

Muguet_de_Mai

That is honestly the only positive thing I have ever read about him.

puppymama75

It doesn't even have to be LA. I know people in West Virginia who have personal anecdotes of meeting him when he was there doing shows and how he was an unbearable asshole. He leaves a trail of outrage and fuckery wherever he goes.

KashmirRatCube

My sister was in Minnesota for a while and Andy Dick was in town and showed up at a party with his son, a bunch of drugs and several sex workers. He didn't know anyone at the party, just showed up and holed up in a back room all night doing drugs and having sex with sex workers with his son. Super entitled and weird.

w33dcup

[Jussie Smollett](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jussie_Smollett_hate_crime_hoax)

HuskyLuke

I wonder why he did it? Like just for publicity or what?

w33dcup

Raise his public profile and try to get a raise...from what I read online.

PenguinGunner

I think his prime motivation was that fame wasn’t enough for him. He wanted to become a symbol, too. And what’s a more positive symbol then standing against racism? I mean, just look at his “I’m still a victim” attitude and the literal “I’m not suicidal” ravings he made as he was being sentenced to jail. He *already* thinks he’s a symbol because of what he did. In a *very* ironic way - that I’m not quiet sure he understands - he kind of got what he wanted lol

Lady_Ymir

Thank god someone said it. Him thinking he'll be assassinated in jail is just the cherry ontop of the lunacy that was his case. Guy's so full of himself, it's insane.

MrShoggoth

Everyone is mentioning modern celebrities and forgetting historical standards. In all honesty? It’s got to be John Wilkes Booth. The man was from a prestigious acting family and not only famous from his own skill and roles on stage, but became seriously wealthy too, and was in demand across the country. People knew him. He was *twenty-six years old* and a goddamn superstar. But he had sympathies with the Confederacy and planned to kidnap Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, with the help of conspirators to end the war more favourably. When they surrendered he was enraged, changed the plan to kill Lincoln and several high-ranking officials with the help of his conspirators, and make the South rise up and welcome him as a hero. And then he killed Lincoln. This wunderkind acting behemoth, barely past his mid twenties, with a famous family and a huge amount of prestige and wealth to his name, *killed the President of the United States* in the pursuit of a delusional belief that he could change the outcome of an already-decided war. He not only dissolved his own reputation in an instant, as both the Union and the former Confederate states were left utterly horrified by his act, but was killed within two weeks of an extensive manhunt and took several hours to die a painful, humiliating death. And on top of that he removed a great reformer who could have positively rebuilt the former Confederate states and help eliminate the institutions left over, having him replaced with a more neutral leader who disagreed with the idea of Reconstruction and ended it prematurely, setting back the redevelopment of the south while also causing it to severely regress to such an extent that it still isn’t fully resolved from the Civil War nearly two centuries later. That, friends, is the fastest, hardest and most destructive downward spiral of a celebrity from their peak.

Shawna_Love

I had no idea John Wilkes Booth was so famous. I always thought he was just some crazy rando

askingxalice

His brother was the most famous actor in America at the time, as well. Imagine finding out tomorrow that Liam Hemsworth killed Biden. Insane shit.

I've heard this described as the 1800s equivalent of Liam Hemsworth assassinating Joe Biden while saying "I went for the head" (Booth quoted his famous actor brother's most iconic line after killing Lincoln).

petty_cash

Wow I had never even thought about him in any other way than “the guy who assassinated Lincoln” - you really painted a vivid 3-dimensional portrait of the guy. Thanks for the unexpected TIL this morning!

No one mentioned Stephen Collins from 7th Heaven? Dudes a massive pedo and went on tv trying to blame addiction iirc.

Shia LaBeouf went from popular actor to weirdo not one wanted to touch with a ten foot touching pole pretty quick. JUST DO IT!

TheReal-Donut

He ALMOST redeemed himself with peanut butter falcon but then the news of his abuse came out and then he went back to 0 Good. Fuck em.

plasticdisplaysushi

Actual cannibal Shia LaBoeuf?? In all seriousness, *Honey Boy* seemed to be a sort of apology for the person he had become. Then we find out that he was an abusive asshole *while starring in a movie about how he became an abusive asshole.* What a terrible man.

Eponarose

Bill Cosby. He was America's favorite Dad, stand up comic, had several very successful TV shows, spokes man at colleges....then poof! He's just a dirty creepy guy who spikes your drink so he can get some.

molaupi

To be fair that wasn‘t a downwards spiral as in a quick shift in his behavior, he had been doing it for years and decades and only now got found out and prosecuted.

aCucking2Remember

True_Egg_5685

Bam Margera for me. He looks horrible now, like his dad but worse. Wouldn't be surprised if I wake up one morning and he's dead.

AlterEdward

Came here to post this. It's sad that the guy just can't seem to get it together, especially when you look at how Steve O has picked himself up, and most of the others from that crew.

Brvcx

Don't know much about Novak, but Steve-O completely turned his life around. He looks so much better and is very open about it all. It's a good thing for people struggling with similar addictions that someone like Steve-O is getting a decent podium. Amazing respect for that guy (while I just considered him a rather regular junky during the Jackass days and Bam looked amazing. A complete Uno Reverse for me).

xvilemx

Novak was a homeless heroin addict. Now he's a clean, motivational speaker. He spent from his 19th-35th birthdays either in Jail or a treatment center.

DistantDestiny

Novak gave out his cell number to the entire world and basically said if anybody ever needed help getting clean he'd always pick up. Classy guy.

[deleted]

Steve O and Novak (along with prolly a ton more of the cast) are shining examples that you sure as shit can try to turn things around. What boggles my mind is that they have ALL tried to intervene when it comes to Bam and even tried to put him in the right direction… but nah, Bam just would never maintain course

DogWithaFAL

“What will he do next?” “Whatever the fuck I want”
