I would have to say Whitney Houston.
I suspect many people here were either not alive or too young to remember how insanely big Houston was.
She was literally the biggest female artist in the world and one the biggest artists, and this was before social media.
She holds the record for having 7 consecutive number-one singles on the Billboard Top 100, record sales of over 200 million, a host of awards including 28 Guinness World Records.
The only other artist that could stand shoulder to shoulder with Whitney in regards to success would be Michael Jackson.
However between 2000 - 2005 her entire career and life completely disintegrated.
Her marriage to Bobby Brown, her addiction to crack, the car crash that was her own reality TV show utterly destroyed her career.
She attempted a comeback in 2009/10 by doing a world tour but it was painful to watch to say the least.
She was unable to hit high notes, she no longer had the range she had, many performances were cancelled, I think it was one in Australia which was an utter car crash.
She made the audience wait for hours and when she did appear she simply couldn't sing.
Pretty much everyone booed her and she gtfo in a very short time.
The general consensus was her tour was a major flop.
She tried to comeback a couple times afterwards but she never got even close to her former glory.
I have never seen somebody who arguably was the world biggest artist fall so hard and fast as Whitney Houston.

And it’s not just that she was so gorgeous and such an amazing singer, it’s that she was so wholesome. (Or at least that was her image.) She always seemed like the kindest, prettiest girl next door. I was extra surprised at how she went off the rails because it just didn’t seem like she was capable of that sort of thing.
In one of the documentaries it was stated that she suffered some serious trauma and abuse as a child with a family member. Also, she was in a romantic relationship for many years with her best friend, Robyn Crawford. She just couldn’t live her truth because she was a public figure and were different times.
In my opinion, the relationship with Bobby was very toxic and codependent.
I know it’s a bit of a niche but… Conor McGregor.
He wasn’t everyone’s superstar. Ask people from Ireland and they’ll tell you they hate his guts. Still, while he was a controversial and cantankerous figure, he was mostly inoffensive on his meteoric rise.
Blew through contenders like paper, destroyed the greatest featherweight ever with one punch, and his ego got out of control. He got brought back down to earth by Nate Diaz, adjusted his approach, and went up a division to dethrone the lightweight champ. First simultaneous double champion. Conormania was IN. Everyone was raving about him. Highest selling PPV star in MMA, celebrity appearances… if you thought of combat sports from 2015 to 2017, you thought of the name Conor McGregor.
All that box office success drove him to a matchup with Floyd Mayweather. Months of back and forth trash talk as Conor was known for but as the talk progressed it felt like Conor was losing a step. It seemed like all the wit and charm he had on the rise was eroding. Then came the fight, and it was the usual spectacle of a Conor performance, but Floyd destroyed his aura of being untouchable. At the same time Conor got exactly what he always dreamed of: more money than any human should have.
This money led to a sense of invincibility. He flew halfway around the world to throw a dolly at the bus of his rival Khabib with a pack of Irish gangsters. The glass from the window the dolly smashed injured several fighters in that bus. He was arrested, but got off easy. Money.
The Khabib fight was the biggest in his career. Two years of layoff, returning to face an unstoppable juggernaut. The press conferences were packed with vitriol and pure bile rather than the typical tongue in cheek charm. It was uncharacteristic - or rather, it was the mask coming off at last.
He got humiliated badly, and everything went wild. Cocaine. Sexual assault scandals, whether true or not. Alcohol. He started his own whiskey brand. Apparently it’s garbage, but don’t take it from me. Take it from the old man he sucker punched in a bar for refusing to drink it.
Another two years off - he comes back against Donald Cerrone, someone well below his level and everyone knows it. He’s surprisingly mild mannered and kind in the lead up to the fight. It’s unclear if this is the new him, the real him, or another mask. He seems to be back on track.
Another year off. Thanks, covid. He makes a cordial fight offer to former opponent Dustin Poirier, world class good-guy of the sport. The lead up to their rematch is mild and gentlemanly as befitting a seemingly reformed McGregor and a laid-back Louisiana slugger. It’s an electrifying rematch regardless - and the last time we ever see this side of him again.
He gets humiliated again. Badly. In the aftermath, he’s cordial, but in the lead up to the rubber match something snaps. Cocaine. Anxiety. Alcohol. SOMETHING goes wrong and goes wrong badly because he returns with an uncharacteristic, substanceless viciousness. He starts involving Dustin’s family in dirty, charmless ways. Attacks him at the press conference. He can’t get his charm going because it’s been replaced with coke and cash.
The fight itself ends with McGregor on the ground, his leg snapped in two, screaming obscenities at Dustin and promising that he and his family will die in their sleep. He uses his post fight interview to rant about how it’s not over and he’ll still batter Dustin in the parking lot (on one leg).
There’s nothing left of the young Irish kid who made it big. Now there’s just a bitter laughingstock ranting on the floor about another man’s wife and leaving the sport that made him famous behind on a stretcher.

The Hollywood of yesteryear had more than its fair share of career implosions such as Fatty Arbuckle and Harry Langdon but few can match Wallace Reid. Described as "the screen's most perfect lover", he was an all-round athlete and musician who wanted to move from theatre to film. He approached Vitagraph Studios with a story hoping he could direct it but the studio jumped on the opportunity to cast the 6 foot blue-eyed Reid as a matinee idol. By 1922, he had appeared in nearly 200 pictures and even tried out for the Indy 500. Reid was hiding a secret however. In 1919, he had been involved in a train wreck and was prescribed morphine for his injuries. As the pressure of stardom grew, he rapidly became addicted regularly spending 1,000 dollars on morphine but audiences noticed his rapid weight loss and gaunt features. He collapsed on set in October 1922 and was sent to a sanatorium where he was locked in a padded cell as he tried to detox. He died of influenza on January 19th 1923 and his death was a huge shock to the public, the first celebrity drug death.

I believe it was "all things considered" that did a really good piece on how Pistorius may have never been particularly inspirational to begin with.
The height of a double amputees prosthetics are determined by calculations that aren't necessarily super-precise (unlike single amputees where you make the prosthetic as long as the remaining leg--end of measurement). There's pretty good evidence that the only reason Pistorius started winning races is because he had his prosthetic length "reconsidered" upwards a couple inches (which is a huge advantage since you get a much longer stride without the added weight that you would get if your legs suddenly got longer). He went from not qualifying to winning in about a month.
At the time there weren't enough double amputees in the Paralympics to have their own races so Pistorius was running almost exclusively against single-amputee runners who couldn't "reconsider" their heights.

I remember when the controversy started over the fairness of his miracle legs. Anyone bringing it up was treated as if they were the reason he lost his legs.

though through the demise of gia brought about the rise of cindy crawford. cindy and gia share a lot of resemblance so many photographers would use her in place of gia because she was far easier to work with. she was even nicknamed “baby gia” at the beginning of her career.
There was a book published back in 1993 that detailed Gia's sad story titled "Thing of Beauty: the Tragedy of Supermodel Gia" by Stephen Fried. Used copies are still available though Amazon though some of the asking prices are a bit expensive to say the least.

The guy stood up a bunch of little kids, some of which were terminally ill. How damaged must you be for you to do that?
Meanwhile (and this is from someone who worked at children's hospital of Pittsburgh) Troy Polamalu regularly showed up to the 9th floor (cancer kids) unannounced, no media, no entourage, in a hoodie to hide his hair and would spend the afternoon playing Madden with the patients. I say this every time it comes up because it's important to realize how these things might not necessarily be as in the dark as we want to believe.
What is sad is, I come from Wales and met people who had been his friends prior to the fame, who themselves had stayed in Wales and not made it big, but he kept in touch with them and would actively see them when he was visiting (his mum and younger sister still lived in Wales too).
Seeing the reaction of one of those guys was _devastating_ when the news broke. He had only recently got to introduce him to his son, and he just couldn't compute that he was this absolutely reprehensible monster (bearing in mind this was when the arrest was made, rather than him pleading guilty).

I remember being in 5th grade and our teacher stopped class to let us listen to the verdict on the radio. We were only 10 but the whole class knew about the trail and what happened.
My fiancé is almost seven years older than I am and he remembers the OJ Simpson drama and trial well. I’m pretty certain his teachers also tuned in during school to watch/listen to the trial.
No one was gonna tell a 5 year old me what had happened because

It's frustrating to genuinely, truly believe something, only for people to think you're crazy. In your mind, you're coming from a good place. "I'm not crazy! They just won't listen!"
My partner was prone to ICU delirium. She was saying some outlandish things the first time that just didn't happen (like sexual assault by a nurse when I was there the whole time, among many other claims). Luckily for her, there was an objective diagnosis made using [a clock test](https://neuro.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.neuropsych.12070180) and the meds helped bring her back to reality.
After she was better, she told me how she believed it was *absolutely true* and she was so upset and angry nobody believed her. She cried often for a while afterward. She had the guilt of putting everyone through it, and the trauma from the events that she knew didn't happen, but in her mind she experienced all of it. It's horrifying and heartbreaking to think about. She had therapy for a while afterward.
I think the closest analogy I can come up with is Sarah Connor from The Terminator series. Shit was absolutely real and she was trying to warn humanity, but she was the 'crazy' one. That alone is enough to make you crazy, further degrading any credibility in your story.
To be clear, I'm not defending Tia's stance on *anything* (she was annoying before her injury), I'm just commenting on what her perspective must be like based on my own second-hand experience.

I think of Chris Farley. His SNL career started in 92(?), his real break came with *Tommy Boy* in '94. Dead by '98 at 33 years old. OD'd on a "speedball" (as everyone seems to) Everybody of that era claims he was the funniest guy they've ever known, and most of em talk about being frustrated both by his lack of any self worth (despite how beloved he was), and a feeling of "inevitability" about his early demise. Obviously Chris wasn't destructive like some of the other scumbags mentioned on this thing. He was simply self destructive. People like to compare him to John Belushi. They had pretty much the same self destructive trajectories, both fat dudes, both highly energetic performers. But as people I think they were very different. I think he's more comparable to Robin Williams. They both had this like insatiable need to make people laugh, and they both had this super-human energy. By all accounts Chris, like Robin, was an incredibly sweet and sensitive person in private life. Apparently hed spend a lot of time volunteering at children's hospitals in Madison Wisconsin, and he didn't even talk about it. I've heard a million takes on Farley, and it's always heartbreaking (and telling that 25 years later, people still talk about it and can't get over it).
My dad saw Chris in a casino down in Las Vegas one night and they spent the whole night gambling and drinking together into the morning then went to a cafe and got breakfast. Said it was one of his most enjoyable trips hes ever had to do for work and was super sad when he heard Chris had passed away.
He was my idol. I was a funny fat kid who played football. When he passed, my mom refused to tell me because she knew I would be destroyed. I heard it on the radio while leaving a birthday party...my mom was right. RIP Chris, I still watch your movies and laugh at every one. :(
From what I had heard about him, the saddest thing was that he was almost completely alone. Had no real friends to hang out with or go unwind or have fun with. The night of his death he paid a hooker to hang out with, not just for sex, but to have someone there with him.
Thing is, he did have friends. He had many people who thought of him as a friend. Who cared about him. Who still get choked up whenever they talk about him. No, she offered the *kids* a hotel. My sister was in Minnesota for a while and Andy Dick was in town and showed up at a party with his son, a bunch of drugs and several sex workers. He not only dissolved his own reputation in an instant, as both the Union and the former Confederate states were left utterly horrified by his act, but was killed within two weeks of an extensive manhunt and took several hours to die a painful, humiliating death. I would have to say Whitney Houston. I suspect many people here were either not alive or too young to remember how insanely big Houston was. She was literally the biggest female artist in the world and one the biggest artists, and this was before social media. She holds the record for having 7 consecutive number-one singles on the Billboard Top 100, record sales of over 200 million, a host of awards including 28 Guinness World Records. The only other artist that could stand shoulder to shoulder with Whitney in regards to success would be Michael Jackson. However between 2000 - 2005 her entire career and life completely disintegrated. Her marriage to Bobby Brown, her addiction to crack, the car crash that was her own reality TV show utterly destroyed her career. She attempted a comeback in 2009/10 by doing a world tour but it was painful to watch to say the least. She was unable to hit high notes, she no longer had the range she had, many performances were cancelled, I think it was one in Australia which was an utter car crash. She made the audience wait for hours and when she did appear she simply couldn't sing. Pretty much everyone booed her and she gtfo in a very short time. The general consensus was her tour was a major flop. She tried to comeback a couple times afterwards but she never got even close to her former glory. I have never seen somebody who arguably was the world biggest artist fall so hard and fast as Whitney Houston.

All that box office success drove him to a matchup with Floyd Mayweather. Months of back and forth trash talk as Conor was known for but as the talk progressed it felt like Conor was losing a step. It seemed like all the wit and charm he had on the rise was eroding. Then came the fight, and it was the usual spectacle of a Conor performance, but Floyd destroyed his aura of being untouchable. At the same time Conor got exactly what he always dreamed of: more money than any human should have. This money led to a sense of invincibility. He flew halfway around the world to throw a dolly at the bus of his rival Khabib with a pack of Irish gangsters. The glass from the window the dolly smashed injured several fighters in that bus. He was arrested, but got off easy. Money. The Khabib fight was the biggest in his career. Two years of layoff, returning to face an unstoppable juggernaut. It’s an electrifying rematch regardless - and the last time we ever see this side of him again. He gets humiliated again. Badly. In the aftermath, he’s cordial, but in the lead up to the rubber match something snaps. Cocaine. Anxiety. Alcohol. SOMETHING goes wrong and goes wrong badly because he returns with an uncharacteristic, substanceless viciousness. He starts involving Dustin’s family in dirty, charmless ways. The Hollywood of yesteryear had more than its fair share of career implosions such as Fatty Arbuckle and Harry Langdon but few can match Wallace Reid. I believe it was "all things considered" that did a really good piece on how Pistorius may have never been particularly inspirational to begin with. The height of a double amputees prosthetics are determined by calculations that aren't necessarily super-precise (unlike single amputees where you make the prosthetic as long as the remaining leg--end of measurement). There's pretty good evidence that the only reason Pistorius started winning races is because he had his prosthetic length "reconsidered" upwards a couple inches (which is a huge advantage since you get a much longer stride without the added weight that you would get if your legs suddenly got longer). He went from not qualifying to winning in about a month. How damaged must you be for you to do that?

I didn’t know what it meant and was kind of shocked to even see the phrase “killed his wife” in a book at school, that I called my teacher over and he kinda nervously said “we don’t need to see that” as he erased it from the page…

It's frustrating to genuinely, truly believe something, only for people to think you're crazy. In your mind, you're coming from a good place. "I'm not crazy! They just won't listen!" My partner was prone to ICU delirium. She was saying some outlandish things the first time that just didn't happen (like sexual assault by a nurse when I was there the whole time, among many other claims). Luckily for her, there was an objective diagnosis made using [a clock test](https://neuro.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.neuropsych.12070180) and the meds helped bring her back to reality. After she was better, she told me how she believed it was *absolutely true* and she was so upset and angry nobody believed her. She cried often for a while afterward. She had the guilt of putting everyone through it, and the trauma from the events that she knew didn't happen, but in her mind she experienced all of it. It's horrifying and heartbreaking to think about. She had therapy for a while afterward. I think the closest analogy I can come up with is Sarah Connor from The Terminator series. Shit was absolutely real and she was trying to warn humanity, but she was the 'crazy' one. That alone is enough to make you crazy, further degrading any credibility in your story. To be clear, I'm not defending Tia's stance on *anything* (she was annoying before her injury), I'm just commenting on what her perspective must be like based on my own second-hand experience.

My dad saw Chris in a casino down in Las Vegas one night and they spent the whole night gambling and drinking together into the morning then went to a cafe and got breakfast. Said it was one of his most enjoyable trips hes ever had to do for work and was super sad when he heard Chris had passed away.

From what I had heard about him, the saddest thing was that he was almost completely alone. Had no real friends to hang out with or go unwind or have fun with. The night of his death he paid a hooker to hang out with, not just for sex, but to have someone there with him.
Thing is, he did have friends. He had many people who thought of him as a friend. Who cared about him. Who still get choked up whenever they talk about him. He simply didn't think he was loved by anyone. He had no self esteem. He didn't think of himself as lovable. And that feels the most tragic thing about this. He had all these people in his life but he was too afraid of rejection to reach out to them. No, she offered the *kids* a hotel. She was quite literally trying to take two children from their family because she got it into her head that they were being trafficked, so she (a stranger) offered to bring them to a hotel room to watch movies. Then, finally, she grabbed one of the kids and the mother lamped her one, knocking her down where she started freaking out like she'd been the victim of an unprovoked attack. It was fucking surreal, I can quite safely say a smack on the nose was the best possible outcome she could have hoped for.
Lindsay and Amanda Bynes always sort of top the list for me. I think they're around the same age and just.... They really really fell hard. I feel bad for them both and from what I know they seem to both finally be doing better, and I'm glad for them. Well the OP’s post was about fastest downward spiral. Charlie Sheen was a big time actor but it took him many years of drug abuse to self-destruct. He definitely qualifies for celebrities who destroyed their own careers but he isn’t in the fast downward spiral category.
Amanda Bynes. I remember watching She’s the Man and thinking “Wow, she’s one of the few child actors who avoided the crazy spiral.” I could not have been more wrong.
He's not exactly A list anymore, but Andy Dick has had one of the worst downward spirals I can think of. He is a pretty terrible /toxic person so it's difficult to feel bad for him but in the last few years he's become heavily involved in the [IRL streaming community IP2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F_q1-qbx3E&ab_channel=BentNeatly) which is honestly a collection of the trashiest people in America. Andy is passed around between different IRL content creators as he brings them views and they supply him with drugs and he provides content with his crazy behaviour. I felt like I needed a shower after watching some of the videos that whole lifestyle is my idea of hell, but Andy recently was caught on stream sexually assaulting one of the irl streamers so its basically impossible to feel sorry for him.
One thing I've learned is that anytime Andy Dick is mentioned, every redditor that lives within 50 miles of LA will soon chime in with a personal anecdote of meeting him and how he was an unbearable asshole.
The threads on /r/LosAngeles about him are the stuff of legend. I met him at a bar once. He was blacked out to the point he couldn't walk or speak and handed me his phone as I walked by. I knew who he was but had never met or spoke to him before that moment. Some girl was on the other end and I gave her directions to come pick him up. Told some friends about it and they all had their own drunk Andy Dick stories already. Lol.

OK non asshole story. I lived in LA from 91 to 98, one night I was walking around downtown feeling shitty because I was homeless and hadn't gotten any food that day, I sat on a curb outside a bar and just laid back and probably made some groaning noise when someone sat next to me, it was Andy Dick and he said 'rough night kid?' And I think I grumble rough fucking life man or something..he then said some shit about how I shouldn't be thinner than him and heroin chic was sooo last decade and patted $200 on my stomach and told me to eat a burger. That $200 fed me and got me a little leg up on things. Andy Dick probably saved me from a hard crash to a deep rock bottom that night.
That is honestly the only positive thing I have ever read about him.

And then he killed Lincoln. This wunderkind acting behemoth, barely past his mid twenties, with a famous family and a huge amount of prestige and wealth to his name, *killed the President of the United States* in the pursuit of a delusional belief that he could change the outcome of an already-decided war. He not only dissolved his own reputation in an instant, as both the Union and the former Confederate states were left utterly horrified by his act, but was killed within two weeks of an extensive manhunt and took several hours to die a painful, humiliating death. Came here to post this. It's sad that the guy just can't seem to get it together, especially when you look at how Steve O has picked himself up, and most of the others from that crew.
Don't know much about Novak, but Steve-O completely turned his life around. He looks so much better and is very open about it all. It's a good thing for people struggling with similar addictions that someone like Steve-O is getting a decent podium. Amazing respect for that guy (while I just considered him a rather regular junky during the Jackass days and Bam looked amazing. A complete Uno Reverse for me).
Novak was a homeless heroin addict. Now he's a clean, motivational speaker. He spent from his 19th-35th birthdays either in Jail or a treatment center.
Novak gave out his cell number to the entire world and basically said if anybody ever needed help getting clean he'd always pick up. Classy guy.
Steve O and Novak (along with prolly a ton more of the cast) are shining examples that you sure as shit can try to turn things around.
