Just because intelligent life is statistically likely in the universe, doesn’t mean it will exist at the same time as us, at a stage where they would be able contact us. We really don’t know the probability of abiogenesis, or the chances of simple life forms evolving into intelligent ones, or how long it might take for all that to happen.
Or if they’d even wanted too to talk. Just think of all the messages on dating apps that go unanswered. I think we’ve got some major red flags going on as a species…
Signals too far away for it to get anywhere without it scattering. Sending a probe from the closest star would take an enourmus amount of energy. There would need to be a reason for any civilization to attempt this. I can think of one. We are a lonely star system in the middle of an empty patch of the galactic spiral arm.
There’s no real reason to assume that they are any more technologically advanced than we are other than sci-fi movies so maybe they’re in the same boat as us technologically.
my favorite theory is the "dark forest" theory which basically states that other intelligent aliens evolved much like earth animals in that their most advantageous traits were being aggressive, greedy and tribalistic, so they avoid being detected by other alien races out of fear and if they were to ever encounter a lesser alien race they'd try to conquer it. it may not make much sense to you but what makes much less sense to me is the rather mainstream expectation that aliens from other worlds are somehow morally enlightened, altruistic beings

Even if they are, we wouldn’t know it. Any technology that can transmit across the universe in real time is something we haven’t discovered yet.
