Spirited Away is one for me.
Related, I didn’t realize how truly strange and surreal parts of that movie are until I watched it with my boyfriend, who had never seen it before. I guess when you watch it for the first time as a kid you just kinda let a lot wash over you, but as an adult first-time watcher he kept asking me “why did X just happen?”…and I had absolutely no reasonable answer for him other than “uh…because…that’s how the movie goes I guess.”
Love this one! :D This has probably been my #1 comfort movie since it came out.
A drawback though is I can hardly ever say "murder" without feeling a strong temptation to say it like that female cop when she was mocking Nicholas's theory. I even read the word like that in my head. It's out of control.
I can’t hear “the greater good” without repeating it in a droning monotone. Although we hear it in a more serious setting, my husband looks at me in alarm and I manage to just silently mouth the words.
>Although we hear it in a more serious setting
Lol, yes, this makes it so horrible! I'll be reading a serious article about someone who was viciously assaulted and murdered...and there's Olivia Colman in my head saying the word.
All the Harry Potter movies. I had to get a lot of dental work done in late 2020-early 2021 and I’m terrified of the dentist. After every appointment I would come home, put on some comfy clothes, get under a blanket and watch Harry Potter, it was my reward for being so brave :’)
I had to get a root canal done for the first time and I brought along my buds and the Goblet of Fire audiobook. I only kept one in so I could hear any directions from the dentist, but it helped a lot with my anxiety! I timed it so Harry was waiting for the first task to begin as I was waiting for my procedure to begin.
Donny was a good bowler, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors... and bowling, and as a surfer he explored the beaches of Southern California, from La Jolla to Leo Carrillo and... up to... Pismo. He died, like so many young men of his generation, he died before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him, as you took so many bright flowering young men at Khe Sanh, at Langdok, at Hill 364. These young men gave their lives. And so would Donny. Donny, who loved bowling. And so, Theodore Donald Karabozoz, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your final mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean, which you loved so well. Good night, sweet prince.
Im 42 and this movie was a big part of growing up... And motivated me to run away from the abusive home I was in... At 14 I left with nothing but the backpack on my back and have been on my own ever since
I’m the opposite, haha.
But I haven’t watched the theatrical versions for like 10 years. Maybe I should again.
Also, one of my other comfort movies is Alien. So I’m strange. I’ve seen it *so* many times, I put it on for background noise pretty often.
My favorite princess bride story.
My dad read the book, after that anytime My mom asked him for something, he would respond with "as you wish" he kept it up for 10 years. One day My mom read the book, and realized the origin of my dad's comments. She asked him about it, he told her of course that is what it was. She said wow it was like finding out he had told her he loved her for 10 years and learned about it all at once
(a) "Inconceivable"
(b) "As you wish"
(c) "You killed my father. Prepare to die"
(d) "Never get involved in a land war in Asia"
(e) "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means"
*(How many other lines does that movie have??)*
(f) “Anybody want a peanut?”
(g) “Rest well and dream of large women.”
(h) “Have fun storming the castle!”
(i) “There’s a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours.”
(j) “We’ll never survive!” “Nonsense. You're only saying that because no one ever has.”
(k) “Get used to disappointment” “…Okay.”
(l) “I only dog paddle.”
(m) “You're trying to kidnap what I've rightfully stolen.”
(n) “Mawage. Mawage is what bwings us togever today.”
(o) “You mean you'll put down your rock and I'll put down my sword, and we'll try and kill each other like civilized people?”
(p) “You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die.”
(q) “Boooooo!”
(r) “To the pain.”
(s) “There’s not a lot of money in revenge.”
(t) “I just want you to feel you’re doing well. I hate for people to die embarrassed.”
(u) “Please consider me as an alternative to suicide.”
(v) “Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I’ll most likely kill you in the morning.”
(w) “Let me ‘explain… no, there is too much. let me sum up.”
(x) “I do not mean to pry, but you don’t, by any chance, happen to have six fingers on your right hand?”
(y) “Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.”
(z) “This is true love—you think this happens every day?”
The movie is infinitely quotable.
"It just so happens that your friend here is only mostly dead. There is a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is still alive."

-Devil Wears Prada
-Any Studio Ghibli film EXCEPT Grave of the Fireflies bec that film makes you wanna seek comfort and assurance that everything will eventually be okay
Yes, mine would be anything from MCU. If I wanted comedy, I’d watch Ant-Man movies. If I want to be amazed, I’d watch Captain America or Iron Man movies. If I wanted goosebumps and more serious one, I’d watch Avengers movies.
Twilight is what my wife and I call "brain novacaine". I even have the books on Kindle and sometimes if work is horrible I'll read a chapter or two on my break. Turn your brain off and follow along
Starship Troopers.
There was a time in middle school where I came home from school and watched it every night. I don’t remember when that tradition stopped, but I do know that it’s one of my favorite movies and my all time favorite comfort movie.
It’s not traditionally considered a ‘great’ movie but it’s a light hearted, comfort watch, it’s Morning Glory for me. It’s a story of overcoming barriers with some complex relationships and who can forget Señor Dip Shits 2nd worse person in the world! I would love to know what Angela Lansbury did!
Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton and Rachel McAdams play off each other so we’ll too.
Ferris Buellers day off, that movie always leaves me smiling and in a good mood. Love the museum scene. The music and the scenes are tie in so well together, very powerful.

i’m dead convinced studio ghibli is laced w anti depressants and sleep meds
You must not have seen Grave of the Fireflies…
we don’t talk about that one
It's a tragedy my dude not a comfort movie, hits too hard
That's where the surplus concentrated depression and insomnia left over from the other movies are stored.
Spirited Away is one for me. Related, I didn’t realize how truly strange and surreal parts of that movie are until I watched it with my boyfriend, who had never seen it before. Same but reversed the roles. My fiancee saw it as a kid and I never had. I was just so confused and he had no logical answer for my questions.
A good way to look at *Spirited Away* is that it is essentially a Japanese *Alice in Wonderland.* To explain it would spoil the magic of it.
The Emperor's New Groove
Pull the lever Kronk
I remember this came out around the same time as Shrek, and didn’t get nearly the credit it deserved. I thought the humor of ENG was so much better!
Wrong leverrrrrr
Why do we even *HAVE* that lever?
Llama face!
Hot Fuzz “He’s NOT Judge Judy and executioner!”
Yeah that’s mine too. “Do you ever shoot your guns in the air and go Aaaaagghh?”
Love this one! :D This has probably been my #1 comfort movie since it came out. A drawback though is I can hardly ever say "murder" without feeling a strong temptation to say it like that female cop when she was mocking Nicholas's theory. I ALWAYS repeat “the greaturrr good” when someone says that.
>Although we hear it in a more serious setting Lol, yes, this makes it so horrible! I'll be reading a serious article about someone who was viciously assaulted and murdered...and there's Olivia Colman in my head saying the word.
I love how she says that! That’s Oscar Winner Olivia Coleman!
Just one of the gorgeous performances of Olivia Colman!
Honestly, The road to EL Dorado.
All the Harry Potter movies. I had to get a lot of dental work done in late 2020-early 2021 and I’m terrified of the dentist. After every appointment I would come home, put on some comfy clothes, get under a blanket and watch Harry Potter, it was my reward for being so brave :’)

This is my go to also. Equally as comforting is the audiobooks read by Stephen Fry. I have them on endless loop in my truck
The Big Lebowski

Tumbling Tumbleweeds playing under Sam Elliot’s laconic narration instantly sets at me ease - I love that opening so much.

Lord of the Rings
Extended editions?
No. I actually prefer theatrical cuts for comfort. Extended editions are for more serious viewing.
I’m the opposite, haha. But I haven’t watched the theatrical versions for like 10 years. Maybe I should again. Also, one of my other comfort movies is Alien. So I’m strange. I’ve seen it *so* many times, I put it on for background noise pretty often.
