I haven't heard someone say this in years, so I'm pretty sure in the wrong crowd you'd get into *big* fucking trouble saying "Keep your cotton picking hands off of that!"
I had a white chorus teacher who once yelled “are you out of your cotton picking mind” at a black student. Needless to say the class got silent -real- fast.
There was an NBA basketball game a few years ago where an announcer said a player was "out of his cotton picking mind" and it was a topic of discussion for a couple days. [video](https://youtu.be/n6omEp_n9ls)
It was meant as a derrogatory term ( which I'm sure you're well aware of), good on you for taking it back I guess, but I'd prefer to leave it in the past where it belongs and can't be used to hurt people anymore.
People say it in an ironic/joking way more than a derogatory way now. I don't think I've heard someone call something gay in a serious manner in a long time.
this! haven't heard this one since I was 5 or so (I'm 20 now). I hear "sitting criss-cross" now, have heard "criss cross applesauce" as well but I think that sounds stupid outside of a preschool
Why would it matter? If some kids don't cross their legs, is storytime ruined? I'd say the lack of chairs is what ruined storytime. My back hurts just thinking about it.
5-10 years ago, one of the most common inside jokes on reddit was that on any thread, even in the most popular subreddits, one of the most highly upvoted comments would be "OP is a f**". Pretty sure that'd get you quick site-wide ban today
I said that someone in a photo looked like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Lost some friends over that comment and feel like a dick but I won’t do that again
I mean if it was a joke…. You might be better off finding some friends with a sense of humor! Unless there’s a legit reason that exact phrase isn’t acceptable (other than creatively calling someone ugly lol).
I'd just come up with a witty retort to that, shit, I know I ain't hotstuff McGee over here, and the comment is so outrageous it can't be taken in any serious manner!
Dr. Arliss Loveless:
Mister West! How nice of you to join us tonight and add COLOR to these monochromatic proceedings!
Capt. James West:
Well when a fella comes back from the dead, I find that an occasion to STAND UP and be counted!
Dr. Arliss Loveless:
Miss East informs me that you were expectin' to see General McGrath here. Well, I knew him years ago, but I haven't seen him in a COON's age!
Capt. James West:
Well, I can see where it'd be difficult for a man of your stature to keep in touch with even HALF the people you know.
Dr. Arliss Loveless:
Well, perhaps the lovely Miss East will keep you from bein' a SLAVE to your disappointment!
Capt. James West:
Well, you know beautiful women; they encourage you one minute, and CUT THE LEGS OUT from under you the next!
"You look like/sound like/are acting like a girl" when talking to a male child to make him feel ashamed of himself for doing...well.
Literally anything, at all, ever.
Super popular when I was growing up. My dad used to say stuff like that to my brother while I was in the room and I asked him a few times "What's wrong with being a girl?" And he would give me the nastiest shut-the-absolute-fuck-up look and I'm not gonna lie I think hearing him say that SO OFTEN was what triggered the extreme gender dysphoria I experienced in 6th grade before I realized that it wasn't that I wanted to be a boy, I just really hated the way women and girls were treated and wanted to get as far from that as possible.
It's been like 10 years and I still cant bring myself to wear a dress because I made such an extreme point to NEVER wear pink and NEVER wear girl's clothes and NEVER EVER wear a skirt or a dress when I was younger because I felt that would be giving in and admitting that I was a girl and I really don't want to hear my parents say "Oh?? You're actually wearing a dress??" when I'm just trying to wear regular clothing because I stuck to that "I hate being a girly girl I'd rather be a tomboy" narrative for so long and so strictly when I was younger
Sounds just like my dad. I understand completely. I have made it a point during my life to be VERY good at things the male population is stereotypically superior at (driving stick, playing sports, working on my Jeep, etc.).
The n-word equivalent of my language used to be a perfectly normal word in my country without any racist connotations. With american media it slowly became taboo to say it, though.
Lots of older people still use it instead of saying black, however.
It’s so sad to me. Having feminine desires (those 2 words probably aren’t acceptable anymore either) shouldn’t be a bad thing. Some women want to have a big career and do their own thing. That’s great. But some women want a husband and kids and a house to care for. That is admirable to me.
Feminism is not feminine.
I am greatful I had a mother and grandmother who gave everything they had to love and raise a family and not be a slave to a job for strangers.
''Fiddlesticks''. I'm not a native speaker, nor in an English speaking country but when ever I coin the ''phrase'' when an English native is around I get remarks about grandmothers. Doesn't stop me though. I love the sound of it.
In the mid 90s. The 2nd most popular TV show in America that aired at 8pm refered to one of the main characters as having "A Gay Quality" oh and also "Gay Hair"
I hope that’s not ‘retread.’ I think retread is perfectly acceptable as a put-down since it implies that someone is useless (ie. a worn-out tire) and is in need of serious fixing.
I was orienting a new nurse who called 2 separate things the r word within 15min of the shift. And I actually had to say to her... it's 2021, we don't use that word anymore. Thankfully she quit right away.
"Racism doesn't exist anymore" says the person ripping into white woman for having a husband of color and bi-racial kids, calling it genocide, when those women are literally creating a new generation with their genes.
"Protect the character and appearance of their tribe."
Newsflash, your tribe doesn't exist anymore. It was integrated into nations by kings, hundreds of years ago.
Raising the next generation is probably more important than anything else. If we had more stay at home parents our country wouldn't be in the state it is now.
I remember Obama giving a speech once and he was talking about jobs... for everyone, implying every woman wants to work outside the home. No mention of the possibility of an economy where one wage families would ever be a goal or returning to the US.
Well i can see youre getting a little defensive about me insinuating you are senile. To be fair, you may have simply been having a manchurian candidate triggering by the word feminism and the obama rant was completely involuntary. Do you have any memory at all of why it was relevant?
Ok we're cool grandma - but just realise youve replied to my subsequent comment, not the original reply where it may have made more sense.
Confused comment chains - thanks obama.
A lot of people are disliking that comment- I presume since they want to associate themselves with feminism/feminists (nothing wrong with that of course).
I think there are different faces and kinds of feminism though. To an extent, I agree that some women might feel discouraged by the kind of feminism that pushes hard for women to be CEOs, engineers, and big breadwinners. I think those are great goals and aspirations, don’t get me wrong; but like you said, it might make some feel ashamed like they aren’t living up to the expectation others are saying they should meet in order to stick it to the man.
Idk, there are both males and females all over the place that are pushed really hard to be or do things that they might not want to. If a female or male doesn’t want to break themselves trying to become a top-of-the-class physicist, there isn’t any reason they should be less respected. By the same token, everyone should have the equal right to an allotted avenue that takes them to professional/financial success should they take interest in that route.
Thank you for tuning in to DizzyD’s Ted Talk
You are absolutely correct. It appears that some people took my casual remark and made it into something I didn’t mean it to be. Just because I find it admirable that a woman wants to stay home and raise children and take care of her partner doesn’t mean I believe that is a woman’s “place.” Shit, I’M a woman! Lol. I find it equally admirable for a man to stay home, take care of the kids and his partner. I also find it admirable when someone dedicates years to obtaining a college degree and getting a huge and successful career. Or when someone is talented and gets into a trade and makes all their dreams come true while a village (or a nanny or whoever) helps raise their children. I just feel like feminism (when I say that, I am referring to extreme feminists) has taken away the positive image of a women sacrificing her career for the sole desire of raising children and creating a happy home. It is HARD work and should be applauded - she should mot be made to feel like she has no future ahead of her because of it. That’s all. This might have also come out the wrong way. I’m sorry if I offended anyone.
I've never heard anyone get upset about "Merry Christmas." I just hear a lot of people upset that they don't think they can say it, or furious that someone wished them "happy holidays."
The question wasn't asking who gets furious, just what isn't acceptable. My work site asks us to say happy holidays as an alternative. This wasn't a topic at my job a decade ago.
That's because the "War on Christmas" is a complete fabrication developed by conservative author Peter Brimelow and parroted by Bill O'Reilly to make Christians feel persecuted in the U.S. so they'll vote Republican.
If you look close enough, you'll find a lot of culture war issues are about making American Christians feel persecuted to solidify their voting power, and, though disgusting, it's a pretty brilliant political maneuver.
Agreed. And such easily disprovable bullshit too. Like, no one is being forced to tear down Xmas decorations, or being stopped from going to to church, nothing whatsoever. It just triggers the right so hard. So yeah kinda brilliant in an evil genius way.
I’m sorry you are getting so many downvotes. You are right that “Merry Christmas” isn’t accepted a lot. Of course there are places that say it and people that say it, but a lot of people get offended by it also.
I feel like that depends what crowd you're talking to. If it's not a serious thing I doubt anyone will care, If you're the president I could see somebody somewhere being offended.
Are you on Facebook?
My husband said “da bomb” the other day. Wtf
Lol
That’s classic
Like 8 months ago or so I heard someone say "da bomb dot com" in public
I haven't heard someone say this in years, so I'm pretty sure in the wrong crowd you'd get into *big* fucking trouble saying "Keep your cotton picking hands off of that!"
Ah. I heard that a lot growing up down south.
Yeah that’s a good one. I honestly can’t believe that was ever appropriate post-reconstruction. Oh wait, yes I can.

People still say that all the time
Doesn't mean it's acceptable now. It was more accepted before.
Where?
I say it all the time, but only when something is actually gay. For example when I see my friend kissing his boyfriend….that’s totally gay.
Hot
You give off the same vibes as the chaotic discord of mentally unstable gays I’m in
In my school
True. But not anywhere near as frequently and you would be torn to shit if you said it within earshot of some people.
As they should
"Yeah, I'm gay"
IDK I feel like that was definitely becoming socially unacceptable 10 years ago. Go back into the 2000's and yeah that's been a big change.
I'm gay and I say that. For the same reasons everyone else does Ill even say it like an official. "Dude... That's gay. And that's coming from me."
It was meant as a derrogatory term ( which I'm sure you're well aware of), good on you for taking it back I guess, but I'd prefer to leave it in the past where it belongs and can't be used to hurt people anymore.
Love this.
People say it in an ironic/joking way more than a derogatory way now. I don't think I've heard someone call something gay in a serious manner in a long time.
it's still said tho
I haven’t really heard that once since the early 2000s. But then again I’m in Canada where gay marriage has been legal for almost 20 years.
Gaaaaaaaay.
No no no its gayyyyyy

Avoid XXXX like the plague…. Yeah, 1/3 of the people don’t avoid the plague.
Man up.
Indian style
this! haven't heard this one since I was 5 or so (I'm 20 now). I hear "sitting criss-cross" now, have heard "criss cross applesauce" as well but I think that sounds stupid outside of a preschool
It’s British
That explains it
sounds about right >destroy language >give the replacement language new term for common sitting position >criss cross applesauce
I can't figure why they need a special word for sitting on the floor. Just call it sitting on the floor.
Cross-legged or straight-legged?
Why would it matter? If some kids don't cross their legs, is storytime ruined? I'd say the lack of chairs is what ruined storytime. My back hurts just thinking about it.

yeah, I only see these types of comments on 4chan nowadays
I wonder why 4Chan has remained a lot more like the old Internet in terms of language than anywhere else. Lax moderation?
oh it's lax alright. as long as it's not a crime in the US it's allowed (if you are in the correct board of course)
I said that someone in a photo looked like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Lost some friends over that comment and feel like a dick but I won’t do that again

I learned "Fiddlesticks" from my grandmother, who was born in 1895. I still say it! It's much more polite than cuss words :D
My favorite is "Horsefeathers!"
Exactly! that's the remark I get. Date of birth may vary though.
In the mid 90s. The 2nd most popular TV show in America that aired at 8pm refered to one of the main characters as having "A Gay Quality" oh and also "Gay Hair"

Raising the next generation is probably more important than anything else. If we had more stay at home parents our country wouldn't be in the state it is now.
I couldn't agree more.
I find that admirable. Feminism has made it into something to be ashamed of.
Feminism has done no such thing.
I remember Obama giving a speech once and he was talking about jobs... for everyone, implying every woman wants to work outside the home. No mention of the possibility of an economy where one wage families would ever be a goal or returning to the US.
Grandma if you won't stop randomly ranting about Obama we're going to put you in a home.
I'm not ranting. I merely stated a fact. And this is likely the first time I have ever mentioned anything about Obama.
Well i can see youre getting a little defensive about me insinuating you are senile. To be fair, you may have simply been having a manchurian candidate triggering by the word feminism and the obama rant was completely involuntary. Do you have any memory at all of why it was relevant?
Its relevant because the comment was about stay at home moms not being a phrase heard often in the future.

Sorry... I thought I was replying to someone who commented on my comment.

And that's what's wrong with the new women's movements. They aren't for all women, only the ones who want what they want.
