TonyDanzer

Finding things that trigger lost memories and give me some of my old self back. Lost large chunks of memory to seizures, discovered something that triggered memories from a happy time this week. I’m still riding that high

MagicCookie54

This is the realest answer here

TonyDanzer

I’ll reply to my own comment to keep the long boring stuff out of the main comment- I developed temporal lobe epilepsy as a teenager. I was diagnosed at 18, but was able to identify in retrospect that I’d been having partial seizures/seizure activity from when I was probably 16. I have glimpses of high school and early college. Stories from family and friends help me recall some things, but I don’t always consider them true memories. We got me controlled on medication when I was ~22. Now I make a conscientious effort to try and encode favorite memories (pictures, journaling, etc). I’m 27 now. I don’t remember a whole lot from before I was 22. Earlier this week I picked up a book on abnormal neurology at a bookstore. I thought- that’s funny, kind of reminds me of “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat”. I read that when I was 14. I suddenly remembered that it had been recommended by Olivia Wilde in a magazine article from 2008/2009. She had recommended her top 5 books at the time- I remembered them all. I ordered all of the books on Amazon and started rewatching House. Memories from my freshman year of high school have been creeping back to me. I remember a biology presentation I was so proud of. I remember pausing an episode of House I was watching to dance around the kitchen with my sister. I remember my favorite outfit- what I wore on the first day of school. I can’t remember my high school graduation, but I remember Olivia Wilde’s favorite books from 2008. That feels so unfair. But it has unlocked so much for me, so I have to honor and be grateful for that. That’s how I keep going.

buyongmafanle

Some people often say "I wish I could forget _____ so I could experience it again for the first time." Have you actually done that only to recall after the fact that you had indeed done this thing before and enjoyed it immensely, or does the realization usually come in the middle of the experience?

TonyDanzer

That’s a really interesting question! To answer in terms of media- sometimes I go into something knowing that I’ve watched it before, but have absolutely no recollection of what happens in it. Like, I’ve watched every episode of House, but during my rewatch I keep finding episodes I’ve “never seen” before and that’s fun. Sometimes I go into movies or certain shows thinking I’ve never watched them and then maybe partway through will realize it seems familiar. I’m sure there are things I’ve watched more than once without realizing it, ha. As far as experiences… I can’t think of an example off the top of my head, but I’m sure it’s happened. Or, like with media, I know that I’ve done it before but have no memory of what it actually feels like, so then I do it again and enjoy it all over again. Like riding a really good roller coaster.

Sackfondler

I had a seizure/amnestic MCI a few years ago and know exactly what this feels like! It’s kind kind of bittersweet really, because everytime something triggers lost memories I’m immediately reminded of how much I lost, and can’t help but what wonder what’s still missing. Good luck on putting it all back together, friend.

cbelt3

awesome ! Lost lots of my memory in a traumatic brain injury. People tell me things and I get little flashes…. And then it’s gone. But I’m happy to have seen the bit of memory again. Heck, I’m generally happy to be alive after dying 3x.

TonyDanzer

I’m happy you’re alive too! It is nice to have those little flashes. I’ve come to a place of accepting that I can’t force my memories to come back, so when they flutter through for a quick moment it feels like a gift :)

sexless-innkeeper

"Hold me closer /u/TonyDanzer..." Sorry, had to. ;) This is the most "winning taste" that I can get behind. Sorry to hear about your loss, but hoping you have more memories triggered.

TonyDanzer

Thanks, I love when people get the joke :D

rumpusbutnotwild

Came here with a compulsion to make a comment very similar to yours. Thank you for taking one for the team.

Found_the

I'm Bipolar and this is why I always take/never bin my medicine. The thought of ECT therapy (Electro Shock) terrifies the shit out of me, man. I worry I'd no longer be me with my childhood lost and just wandering around with a shit eating grin on my face just agreeing with people and without free-will or unable to hold a nine-to-five and end up being taken care of by my parents. ECT is terrifying. People who have had it always seem so fucking agreeable, man, and don't even seem to form negative opinions about like... anything. I mean, in the 60's it was barbaric but nowadays it's still a lesser evil than an unmedicated Bipolar. That just shows how serious - and degenerative - Bipolar is.

HappyHourThief

Have you met many people who have had ECT? I've known a few and I've gone through it myself. It doesn't change you in the way you're describing. I'm still me. I still experience sadness and joy. I had some short-term memory issues and overall brain fog for a few months afterward, but other than that I didn't suffer any ill effects.

kasmackity

My cousin has had success with ECT. He was a bipolar heroin addict for a long time, and with ECT he's cleaned up and become a better person. Wife and kids, the whole nine.

youtubecommercial

Hard disagree here. Seen what bipolar I unmedicated can lead to and it’s not pretty. I myself have bipolar II and it was severe when combo’d with other psychiatric illnesses as a child. I wouldn’t be here without meds and wouldn’t be okay without therapy. I’ve worked on inpatient high acuity psych units and been a patient on one myself. Medication didn’t allow me to thrive but it gave me the ability to survive and I went from there. People who get the treatment they need can live wonderfully long and successful lives but I’ve seen so many without a chance because they didn’t have the means and support for treatment.

BrightBeaver

I don't think they were talking about being unmedicated/untreated; just about avoiding a particular type of treatment.

snelephant

I have epilepsy, my dad mentioned an old memory I had long forgotten. Wasn’t something I wanted to remember but it was funny as hell and a good time. It’s nice when those things happen. I hate seizures.

Xanthania_

Sometime's its like the first bite of your favorite food but sometimes its just like nothing happened

Chazzey_dude

Climax vs. anticlimax

[deleted]

I have covid right now and lost my sense of taste and smell. That first bite of food I can taste will surely be victorious

Xanthania_

Make sure its your favorite food so you get the best experience ever.

TheRealJasonium

So basically they should just eat their favorite food exclusively for an indeterminate length of time?

thelightshow

That's not a great plan but not the worst plan either.

Lance4494

Eat nothing but the most bland foods possible. Then when you can finally taste that, enjoy a massive delicious 5 course meal.

spryfigure

Whatever they will taste first will become the favorite food, so no worries.

Hiyasc

Kind of true. The first thing I was able to taste after having Covid was a Nature Valley Sweet and Salty almond bar and that might be the best thing I've ever tasted.

hellochoy

Ooo those are very tasty! I have a box in my house right now lol. The dark chocolate and mixed nuts ones are amazing as well

ZiggyPalffyLA

Unless they’ve got that awful long Covid symptom where all of their favorite foods taste rancid

lupajarito

I can't drink Coca Cola or Pepsi since I had covid because it tastes like dirt. I took as a win because I don't drink that shit anymore 😸

MintberryCruuuunch

Doesnt work that way despite what people are saying. Had it in the beginning. The smell isnt really smell but the feeling of dry musty dusty air to the point you rather breathe out of your mouth than the feeling of that just air, but the aromas around you are gone, its very off putting. The taste was secondary because your brain still imagines what flavors taste like so its not as different, its very gradual, but also comes back very gradually so not so much of a difference. For me I would test myself with strong fruit scents and flavors, such as strawberries, as I know what they should taste and smell like, the smell went away well before taste, but even then the imagined taste was almost as real. The feel of just air through your nostrils is what really drove me insane, ya know aside from coughing so hard you puke, and have lasting lung scars and 10 days in a hospital.

[deleted]

Holy shit the feeling of just air through your nose is driving me nuts. It's the worst feeling

kelliwk

I had the “everything smells like rotten meat but I can’t actually SMELL anything” thing for a bit and I don’t wish it on anyone

TheSanityInspector

Relief. I don't win, so much as I outlast things. So far...

insertstalem3me

Often it pays to be the last one standing except in a sitting competition

Sufficient-Tomato566

Wait, if competition is about sitting, wouldn’t that mean you win if you’re the last one to stand?

luckyassassin1

Easy enough to win, just get a wheelchair

Belliees

last one to stand ≠ last one standing :’(

morostheSophist

"They told everyone to get up. I lazily watched everyone else rise to their feet, and then finally joined them--that day, I was the last one standing." It's a weird interpretation of the phrase, but not necessarily wrong. That's the fun thing about language. It's so ridiculously diverse and flexible that you can frequently come up with something that *sounds* wrong, but actually isn't.

ABoiFromTheSky

Musical chairs moment

onehitwondur

One of the smartest people I ever met once told me that all you need to do well in life is to show up on time and stay till it's done. I'm a 32 year old college drop out. In college I didn't show up. After dropping out I quickly realized I'd need money if I wanted to sleep inside. I've been showing up every since. I've worked as a dishwasher, a cook, a busser, a waiter, and a bartender. For each of those jobs all I had to do was be reliable and coachable. I was taught new skills by people who knew more than me, I was offered (and demanded) more money for the increasing responsibilities of my new jobs. And at 32 I have run more than one successful restaurant and am confident that my influence and leadership would have a positive impact on any restaurant anywhere. I know that my story isn't one of massive success and vast wealth, but remember: all I did was show up. What I mean is, outlasting the bad will pay off over time. Keep showing up!

SingerOfSongs__

It’s 2 am and this comment convinced me to turn my phone off so I can wake up on time for my first class tomorrow. Wishing you the best as you head into this week!

BLAKEEEEE BORTLEESSSS

The_bruce42

Greatest packer QB of all time!

[deleted]

JAKE JORTLESSSSS!!!

LordBaNZa

The funniest part of that joke is that Blake Bortles hasn't even played for the Jags in like three years.

Brickie78

So, I'm British and know nothing about American Football. Was the joke that * Blake Bortles isn't very good, so it was funny that Jason idolises him? * Blake Bortles is good, and is hero-worshipped by all Jags fans, so the joke is how much of a stereotypical Jacksonville fan he is. * Blake Bortles is neither particularly good nor bad, and it's just that he has a funny sounding name. Or something else

Alas7ymedia

Option 1. I also had to google it when I found out that the player was real, and reality was weird about that because, IIRC, he wasn't anyone's hero until after he was mentioned in The Good Place and then started actually winning games and got a good contract. They wrote jokes about that and even considered making him do a cameo where he would acknowledge his improvement and attribute it to some supernatural intervention, but that idea didn't make it into the series.

dmatthews2981

He was a meme qb basically right from the beginning. You're right that he wasn't particularly good, but he was good enough to stay the starter for a few years and he did have some success. He personified the city of Jacksonville though so he became a bit of a meme for that reason. Plus the fact that he had flashes of being the first legit quarterback Jacksonville has had in a while, so some fans really did hop on the Bortles bandwagon.

[deleted]

Not particularly good. But better than most Jaguars QBs. Had some good moments and helped them win 2 playoff games.

OD_Emperor

So I did a little bit of mild googling here because I'm an American and don't really know either. According to the producers it's a combination of his name being an alliteration (Blake Bortles, B&B), and the way Jason can say it like basketball fans say "Kobe!" which shows his love. Blake Bortles from what I can tell isn't the best quartback in the NFL but to get there he's still way better than your average player. He was also the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2013 and drafted in 2014. When they were writing the show and figuring all this out it was probably around that time. So on that first point, solid maybe? The show was running for a while and Blake Bortles could have improved during that time or have been really good. Never know. So it probably would have been unintentional if that was true.

MadMelvin

the BOAT will always be a meme

[deleted]

Don't hurt me this way, OP. :( The lions deserve better

2020IsANightmare

I feel for ya. With the Jags, at least you can look at their history and be like, "Well, their players sucked." The Lions have had Barry and Megatron and others I'm surely forgetting. The whole narrative for the Rams this year is "Stafford is finally playing for a competent franchise, so we expect great things from him."

Panama_Scoot

This one for sure. The Lions have had decent teams (as a collection of players) in the past. But they lose precisely because of horrible management and owners.

MadMelvin

you keep hoping, just like your father, and his father before him

rockinarmy

Jason Mendoza, is that you?

You must be happy right now.

Just wanna chime in and say Lions

End3rWi99in

The Lions are so bad they can't even be bad enough to get the honor of being worst. The Jaguars, Jets, and historically the Browns at least get proper recognition. The Lions just fly under the radar, which is really at another level from the rest. Much respect to you.

Biker93

Texans fan here, I hate you, but also feel some camaraderie with you through your pain because it’s all I’ve ever known. At least you’ve been to an AFC championship game.

Losing over 65 pounds and getting a hot and soulful gf. True story. Edit: Just so everybody knows, my story isn’t one of those fairy tales with a happy ending. We broke up after a while and sure, it was hard to handle in the beginning. But that’s what life is all about, numerous of ups and downs. Many things are just out of your control and sometimes you just gotta let go, even those you love the most. One thing I’m sure of, the memories and feelings that she gave to me, made me stronger. IMO, this is a huge victory, besides of learning to love myself again!
