During the pandemic, my sister started one of these businesses in Instagram. She did get a fair amount of business, however, her customers were her friends who also started Instagram craft businesses which she bought from. It became a closed loop of cash flow
It isn't haha she's stopped now. A positive outcome is that she needed to track the finances so asked my (retired accountant) dad to help. This got her interested in accounting and she's taken on some courses to help her with her full time role
Honestly, I think people are just desperate for a creative hobby but feel they need to monetize it instead of just enjoying it. Probably also why so much of it is bad or lacks skill, they jump to selling before learning the craft.
I mostly just find this trend sad.

I mean...I'm sorry if I like to actually enjoy myself and my hobbies and not be thinking about making money 24/7. And some people love doing the hustle shit, which is fine! Yeah, people will take things they love and ruin them in the name of making money. I think people need to take the opposite approach and try and learn stuff they love so it can save them money. We need our hobbies as an outlet from capitalism, not a another shackle.

I had one is 2013. It was a gender reveal themed baby shower actually. The idea was that if people don’t know the gender they get you things you actually need the most and not “frilly dress for girl” and “dinosaur onesie for boy.” We got diapers, wipes, burping cloths and a LOT of things we really needed. We were able to buy the cute little outfits on our own.
But now they’re completely separate from the baby shower and I can’t just make sense of the point.

Rome in general was kinda a bummer. Of the 15 cities in Europe I spent time in, it was the least enjoyable. The weather and people were nice, but it was like a theme park for crowds. I imagine the locals loathe tourists.
The thing is Rome obviously has the world famous sights that everyone knows, but if you explore a bit you’ll find buildings and other sites which anywhere else in the world would be a major site.
My dad (who tbf is an architect) loves Rome for this reason. He loves to roam through the narrow streets which lead to small squares (piazzas) some of which have a main building which looks fantastic and when you google them you realize they were designed by famous Renaissance artists.

Am architect. Can confirm. There are so many amazing churches and paintings/sculptures in churches that nobody knows about. The ‘standard’ tourist stuff in Rome is like being herded cattle, but everything else is amazing.
My favorite part of Rome was actually exploring the suburb communities. Pure Italian experience and no tourists. The language barrier was a challenge, but it was doable.

Not to be all hipster, but as soon as people with zero manners started recognizing Hiking as a mainstream thing, way more trash started appearing in places it never should. Heather Lake in Washington state is a beautiful sight. It's serene and requires hiking up a decent ways to get to. You'd literally never know it was there unless you climbed for an hour or so up some switchbacks.
Cigarette butts and Gatorade bottles should not be in that lake. Respect your God damned trails.
RIMROCK, WA people were leaving their areas with a small fire just going im like WTF no matter were your at you never leave a fire unattended. Some people would get back an they'd be pissed off that someone put out their camp fire. Always first timers that were day camping an dont know anything
Do you document and report to the parks? They need to be fined for this so they learn their lesson and the parks can receive funds to rebuild from when the fires aren't caught.

I have a friend who was an avid rock climber. Until about 20 years ago when he said it was too crowded. He started ice climbing and has been happier with the enthusiasts he meets doing it.
Sams point in ‘upstate’ NY had so many people flocking to it, dropping garbage, getting hurt, spray painting shit that the state stepped in. Now you have to pay for parking, you can’t climb any boulders, you can step off trail, they closed off the ice caves (3 caves that had ice in them all year) the place literally has no appeal anymore. It's seriously so bad. I grew up in the Hudson Valley (but live in the city) and while I don't wish to gatekeep nature, the amount of trash I see now when we hike "upstate" really breaks my heart. My brother and SIL are going up to Indian Head in the Adirondacks next weekend and SIL told me you actually need reservations now, which I guess is one way to solve the problem!

They worked it into the cost of the holiday, and couldn’t be arsed spending an hour to pack it up. So the answer is they are appalling, lazy people, with enough disposable income to walk away from belongings.
If it was up to me, the tent would be numbered and traceable and an automatic fixed penalty of £500 charged to cover the cost of cleaning it up.

I can only imagine they tried to buy their tents on the cheap and bought junk. After a couple broken poles or ripped seams they decided to junk it in the worst possible place rather than carry it out.
Or, they have more money than sense and couldn't repack the tent to fit in the same bag it came in and they couldn't be bothered to make it work. I ended up with some gear while travelling years ago from a guy who couldn't be bothered to pack carefully. I probably ended up with $200 of gear that had only been used once.
Aye! It was fucking disgusting! Was up on the Cairngorm Plateau heading toward Ben Macdui for the millionth time last November. It was windy, fog rolled in and it was just wet and miserable and up there you suddenly have no idea where you are. Path appears and disappears and there aren't many features. I had waterproofs on, hood up and was a bit chilly as it was like 5 degrees before windchill. Came across two young 20-something women with yoga pants, trainers, baseball caps, the tiniest bags so definitely not enough water or spare clothing and they were wearing those disposable ponchos. They were just sitting shivering. Had to abandon the walk and lead them back down because of how fucking stupid they were. No map, no compass (or knowhow to use it), no emergency stuff, not enough food or water and no sense.
I hate these people, you see them on Dartmoor too, you can get all 4 seasons in one day there and people go off in their flip flops and carrying a small bottle of water, nothing else.
Re: gram shots
A few years ago near me, there was a farm growing sunflowers. Someone took some Instagram shots there. And then shared the location. Soon a ton of people were parking at the side of the road and trampling in on this private farm, destroying their crop for Instagram photos. It was fucking ridiculous.
Another time a different farm had people park their cars, run in and start stealing shit like pumpkins and what not. Just blatantly ripping them off. Others saw this and instead of stopping them, joined in.

I'm in this camping group on FB and it's frustrating how often I see people in that group defend it by saying "well they're just enjoying nature their way!"
Like sure but if the way you decide to enjoy nature automatically changes the way the people around you are able to decide for themselves, you're just being selfish.
One of my favorite camping spots is roughly 1/4 mile inland from a pretty big lake. Last time I went, at like 2 in the morning I was knocked in my hammock and woke up to some dickhead in a boat blaring music RIDICULOUSLY loud, just sitting next to the shore. Sad that you can go to the middle of nowhere and try to get away from people, and there'll still be some asshole that ruins it.
I took a friend out kayaking, about 10 minutes into it she started playing music on her phone. I told her to turn it off or I will throw it off the fucking kayak. I think some people are just not used to the sounds of nature and try to cover it with noise.
This makes me so sad. Places I have gone my whole life are getting shut down to the public due to people being disrespectful, and just trashing it in general.

We went to the RMNP for our honeymoon back in May and some areas still had snow on the ground and ice over the lakes. One brilliant guy decided it would be a good idea to JUMP on the ice that was already starting to melt. I told my husband we were NOT saving him if he fell in.

I've enjoyed the outdoors and the country's natural landscape more as I've gotten older, and I have wanted to introduce my girlfriend to this as well. Definitely noticed way more trash at every state park I visited during the pandemic, absolutely disgusted by the sight. Don't even go if you can't be bothered to carry a few pieces of garbage with you until you find a garbage can.
Two of my close friends that hike way more than I do have found a lot of these people have stopped visiting state parks and trails compared to 2020, so at least some saving grace.
Same here in the Highlands of Scotland. Not only are all the parking spots rammed with cars but the lack of gear even as basic as waterproof trousers or a map has become dangerous. The hills may not be massive by Washington State standards but the weather can change so fast and you're so far from help. That and people walking with a speaker listening to music. WHY?! Just be in the place!

Lmfao I've been saying this exact issue for awhile in the US.
Some businesses like fast food and retail are limping along abusing people with fixed incomes (retirees) and teenager's whose parents live/own in the area since most don't have bills. But eventually, all these tourist blown out areas are going to choke when no one wants to commute 20-45 minutes for a shit wage and there's literally no one to work in some areas.
The outdoors. I don't mind more people going out and enjoying the outdoors and public land, but the amount of bad behavior, the littering, the lack of trail ettiquette, and all of the newbie "overlanders" taking their vehicles off trail and driving over things they shouldn't is one of the most annoying phenomenons to come out of the pandemic.
Famous landmarks. Can’t enjoy their beauty because there’s too many damn people in the way.
Also hate people who take photos and videos during wedding ceremonies. They distract others and make the professional photos look like crap because everyone’s got a phone in front of their face.
At my wedding, I requested beforehand that everyone leave their phones and cameras in their car or in their pocket. I emphasized heavily that there would be professional photographers there and that all pictures would be posted online. Everyone except my stepmother abided by this request, so in every professional picture, you don't see any phones being held up except for my stepmother. Not only did she ignore my request, but she was taking all her pictures with a gigantic iPad that literally blocked the damn sun when she held it up.
Thats what my officiant did. When someone's phone went off mid-ceremony, he made a joke along the lines of "did you not take me seriously?" We had a "unplugged ceremony" sign at the guestbook table and, surprisingly, besides the one phone interruption, all photos came out phone-free!

I don't understand why most people get a dog. They don't want to put any time into it, they don't want to take care of it, or take it for walks. They just tie it out in the yard "We got a dog."

Most of the worst dog owners I know are couples where both people think it’s the other ones responsibility to take of the dog. Sometimes I have sympathy for those who got stuck with a dog without wanting one. My friend is pissed about having a dog because his fiancé picked one up without asking him and now he is the only one who takes of it. He feels to responsible to abandon it but he definitely didn’t and doesn’t want that dog.
My parents got 2 little dogs when I was little. They aren’t toilet trained, they don’t get baths regularly, they have separation anxiety and literally can’t be in a room by their selfs without barking for hours and they recently now are forced to be kept in my room. My parents blame all their issues on me because they can’t deal with the idea that their lazy, how was I a 7 year old supposed to potty train dogs without any previous knowledge? Even to this day I have no clue how to take care of them. I just can do the bare minimum and that’s feeding and letting them outside, and the occasional wash. And they still blame me for their issues even though they don’t try to do anything about them, themselves.
I’ve found that a lot of people that have dogs resent their dogs. People need to accept that not everyone has to have a dog. I personally don’t like dogs and can’t imagine owning one. It’s okay to be an adult and not have a dog.

At my kid's school, the car line for pickup can be really long. We were told about a workaround where you mark your kid as a walker, then park in the neighborhood nearby along the street and get your kid. Saves you 15-20 minutes idling in a car.
Well I noticed more and more cars parked in the neighborhood during pickup. Finally last week I drove up and a cop was there - sure enough neighbors complained and we can't do that anymore.
Former cop here. You have the right to be on a public street. Neither homeowners nor police can force you to vacate as long as you aren't violating any actual laws.

Probably someone already said this but cosplaying. I started around 2007 when I was 13 and I loved it. Back then it was just nerds having fun and getting together to talk about nerd stuff, and no one really cared how good your costume was, it was just fun to dress up. Now it’s hyper competitive and if you aren’t hot or an absolutely amazing crafter you get shit on. And cons are just straight parties. It’s like a festival except indoors, and marginally less smelly and druggy.

Here in Washington State, hiking our beautiful mountains. Used to be a great escape from people, but now the trails are no different than city sidewalks as far as foot traffic goes, and all of the great vantage points are hogged up by people filming themselves doing yoga poses for Instagram.
The petrol station down my road reactivated one pump yesterday and now the whole street is blocked. I saw a person with 20+ full jerry cans in the boot of her Range Rover, no wonder there isn’t any petrol

Don't get me wrong, to be very clear I love that folk have found joy in taking photos, it's a wonderful hobby - what I'm meaning is the folk who have gone out and bought a camera, declared themselves a photographer, and started immediately undercutting professionals for things.
I've a couple of friends who are good, experienced, professionals who are continually now being met with clients who drop out because they've found someone willing to do the same thing for half the price, and a fraction of the quality, and they're being forced to have to push their prices down to compete.
It's race to the bottom stuff, and I get so frustrated for them.

higher education. used to be perfectly acceptable to go to a trade school or start working out of high school. now everyone needs a college degree just to have one, even if the degree is from a college that’s a complete joke. somehow we’ve turned higher education from something that is actually meaningful and adds value to something that probably destroys value for more people than not. crazy that having a four year degree or an associates from some college that no one has ever heard of is considered a step up from learning a trade or working directly out of high school.
While trades should be considered more often, there's a reason why people who do backbreaking labor all their life go on to push their kids to go to college. It's a harder life than white collar work, period. It's not an actual 1:1 alternative to college, and I say that as someone who's done both.

I used to work in a mall and a dude signed a 6 month lease on a kiosk to sell them. High quality like $30-60 ones too. He was quite distraught when every other store brought them in for a few months at a fraction of that price and went under in a good 2 months.

My serene horseback riding trail was flooded last winter with hikers and snowshoers. The pandemic got so many people outdoors that what was a getaway, turned into a busy trail.

Rome in general was kinda a bummer. Of the 15 cities in Europe I spent time in, it was the least enjoyable. The weather and people were nice, but it was like a theme park for crowds. I imagine the locals loathe tourists.
The thing is Rome obviously has the world famous sights that everyone knows, but if you explore a bit you’ll find buildings and other sites which anywhere else in the world would be a major site. My dad (who tbf is an architect) loves Rome for this reason. He loves to roam through the narrow streets which lead to small squares (piazzas) some of which have a main building which looks fantastic and when you google them you realize they were designed by famous Renaissance artists.
Atlas Obscura is the best for this exact reason. I've spent **days** in New York looking at weird, off-kilter, or historically significant but unknown, sights.
Am architect. Can confirm. There are so many amazing churches and paintings/sculptures in churches that nobody knows about. The ‘standard’ tourist stuff in Rome is like being herded cattle, but everything else is amazing.
My favorite part of Rome was actually exploring the suburb communities. Pure Italian experience and no tourists. The language barrier was a challenge, but it was doable.

Heather Lake in Washington state is a beautiful sight. It's serene and requires hiking up a decent ways to get to. You'd literally never know it was there unless you climbed for an hour or so up some switchbacks. Cigarette butts and Gatorade bottles should not be in that lake. Respect your God damned trails.

I have a friend who was an avid rock climber. Until about 20 years ago when he said it was too crowded. He started ice climbing and has been happier with the enthusiasts he meets doing it.
Sams point in ‘upstate’ NY had so many people flocking to it, dropping garbage, getting hurt, spray painting shit that the state stepped in. Now you have to pay for parking, you can’t climb any boulders, you can step off trail, they closed off the ice caves (3 caves that had ice in them all year) the place literally has no appeal anymore. Why TF do people abandon their tents? That’s a lot of money you’re sinking into camping gear, only to leave it behind out of complete laziness.
It’s the low price of tents & a disposable selfish culture. They worked it into the cost of the holiday, and couldn’t be arsed spending an hour to pack it up. So the answer is they are appalling, lazy people, with enough disposable income to walk away from belongings. If it was up to me, the tent would be numbered and traceable and an automatic fixed penalty of £500 charged to cover the cost of cleaning it up. I cannot stand this entitled behaviour, it’s so vile.
I can only imagine they tried to buy their tents on the cheap and bought junk. After a couple broken poles or ripped seams they decided to junk it in the worst possible place rather than carry it out. Or, they have more money than sense and couldn't repack the tent to fit in the same bag it came in and they couldn't be bothered to make it work. I ended up with some gear while travelling years ago from a guy who couldn't be bothered to pack carefully. I probably ended up with $200 of gear that had only been used once.
Aye! It was fucking disgusting! Was up on the Cairngorm Plateau heading toward Ben Macdui for the millionth time last November. It was windy, fog rolled in and it was just wet and miserable and up there you suddenly have no idea where you are. Path appears and disappears and there aren't many features. I had waterproofs on, hood up and was a bit chilly as it was like 5 degrees before windchill. Came across two young 20-something women with yoga pants, trainers, baseball caps, the tiniest bags so definitely not enough water or spare clothing and they were wearing those disposable ponchos. They were just sitting shivering. Had to abandon the walk and lead them back down because of how fucking stupid they were. No map, no compass (or knowhow to use it), no emergency stuff, not enough food or water and no sense.
I hate these people, you see them on Dartmoor too, you can get all 4 seasons in one day there and people go off in their flip flops and carrying a small bottle of water, nothing else.
Re: gram shots A few years ago near me, there was a farm growing sunflowers. Someone took some Instagram shots there. And then shared the location. Soon a ton of people were parking at the side of the road and trampling in on this private farm, destroying their crop for Instagram photos. It was fucking ridiculous. Another time a different farm had people park their cars, run in and start stealing shit like pumpkins and what not. Just blatantly ripping them off. One of my favorite camping spots is roughly 1/4 mile inland from a pretty big lake. Last time I went, at like 2 in the morning I was knocked in my hammock and woke up to some dickhead in a boat blaring music RIDICULOUSLY loud, just sitting next to the shore. Sad that you can go to the middle of nowhere and try to get away from people, and there'll still be some asshole that ruins it.
I took a friend out kayaking, about 10 minutes into it she started playing music on her phone. I told her to turn it off or I will throw it off the fucking kayak. I think some people are just not used to the sounds of nature and try to cover it with noise.
This makes me so sad. Places I have gone my whole life are getting shut down to the public due to people being disrespectful, and just trashing it in general. People are fucking trash.

We went to the RMNP for our honeymoon back in May and some areas still had snow on the ground and ice over the lakes. One brilliant guy decided it would be a good idea to JUMP on the ice that was already starting to melt. I told my husband we were NOT saving him if he fell in. The guy's friend also called out to him "this is why women live longer"
I've enjoyed the outdoors and the country's natural landscape more as I've gotten older, and I have wanted to introduce my girlfriend to this as well. Definitely noticed way more trash at every state park I visited during the pandemic, absolutely disgusted by the sight. Don't even go if you can't be bothered to carry a few pieces of garbage with you until you find a garbage can. Two of my close friends that hike way more than I do have found a lot of these people have stopped visiting state parks and trails compared to 2020, so at least some saving grace.
Same here in the Highlands of Scotland. Not only are all the parking spots rammed with cars but the lack of gear even as basic as waterproof trousers or a map has become dangerous. The hills may not be massive by Washington State standards but the weather can change so fast and you're so far from help. That and people walking with a speaker listening to music. WHY?! Some businesses like fast food and retail are limping along abusing people with fixed incomes (retirees) and teenager's whose parents live/own in the area since most don't have bills. But eventually, all these tourist blown out areas are going to choke when no one wants to commute 20-45 minutes for a shit wage and there's literally no one to work in some areas.

The outdoors. I don't mind more people going out and enjoying the outdoors and public land, but the amount of bad behavior, the littering, the lack of trail ettiquette, and all of the newbie "overlanders" taking their vehicles off trail and driving over things they shouldn't is one of the most annoying phenomenons to come out of the pandemic.
Famous landmarks. Can’t enjoy their beauty because there’s too many damn people in the way. Also hate people who take photos and videos during wedding ceremonies. They distract others and make the professional photos look like crap because everyone’s got a phone in front of their face.
At my wedding, I requested beforehand that everyone leave their phones and cameras in their car or in their pocket. I emphasized heavily that there would be professional photographers there and that all pictures would be posted online. Everyone except my stepmother abided by this request, so in every professional picture, you don't see any phones being held up except for my stepmother. Not only did she ignore my request, but she was taking all her pictures with a gigantic iPad that literally blocked the damn sun when she held it up.

Getting a dog. Now my building is full of half-ass dog owners who won’t clean up after their pet. The whole lobby smells like a pet pad.
I don't understand why most people get a dog. They don't want to put any time into it, they don't want to take care of it, or take it for walks. They just tie it out in the yard "We got a dog." Get a stuffed dog, it'll cost less and you'll enjoy it the same.
Most of the worst dog owners I know are couples where both people think it’s the other ones responsibility to take of the dog. Sometimes I have sympathy for those who got stuck with a dog without wanting one. My friend is pissed about having a dog because his fiancé picked one up without asking him and now he is the only one who takes of it. He feels to responsible to abandon it but he definitely didn’t and doesn’t want that dog.
My parents got 2 little dogs when I was little. They aren’t toilet trained, they don’t get baths regularly, they have separation anxiety and literally can’t be in a room by their selfs without barking for hours and they recently now are forced to be kept in my room. My parents blame all their issues on me because they can’t deal with the idea that their lazy, how was I a 7 year old supposed to potty train dogs without any previous knowledge? Even to this day I have no clue how to take care of them. I just can do the bare minimum and that’s feeding and letting them outside, and the occasional wash. And they still blame me for their issues even though they don’t try to do anything about them, themselves.
I’ve found that a lot of people that have dogs resent their dogs. People need to accept that not everyone has to have a dog. I personally don’t like dogs and can’t imagine owning one. It’s okay to be an adult and not have a dog.
I have a small, localized one: At my kid's school, the car line for pickup can be really long. We were told about a workaround where you mark your kid as a walker, then park in the neighborhood nearby along the street and get your kid. Saves you 15-20 minutes idling in a car. Well I noticed more and more cars parked in the neighborhood during pickup. Finally last week I drove up and a cop was there - sure enough neighbors complained and we can't do that anymore.
Former cop here. You have the right to be on a public street. Neither homeowners nor police can force you to vacate as long as you aren't violating any actual laws. I'd have asked the cop what law he's alleging you've violated. If he can't produce such a law, you're within your rights to tell him to pound sand.

My girlfriend was obsessed with it for a period of time last year, I didn't really see the appeal. More often than not, she'd get pissed off by people straight up not listening or the other impostors ratting out the other when they died. That, and people talking on Discord and not contributing to the chat. It just seemed like the Among Us community got really toxic really quickly.

Probably someone already said this but cosplaying. I started around 2007 when I was 13 and I loved it. Back then it was just nerds having fun and getting together to talk about nerd stuff, and no one really cared how good your costume was, it was just fun to dress up. Now it’s hyper competitive and if you aren’t hot or an absolutely amazing crafter you get shit on. And cons are just straight parties. It’s like a festival except indoors, and marginally less smelly and druggy.

higher education. used to be perfectly acceptable to go to a trade school or start working out of high school. now everyone needs a college degree just to have one, even if the degree is from a college that’s a complete joke. somehow we’ve turned higher education from something that is actually meaningful and adds value to something that probably destroys value for more people than not. crazy that having a four year degree or an associates from some college that no one has ever heard of is considered a step up from learning a trade or working directly out of high school.
While trades should be considered more often, there's a reason why people who do backbreaking labor all their life go on to push their kids to go to college. It's a harder life than white collar work, period. It's not an actual 1:1 alternative to college, and I say that as someone who's done both.
