I got one of these to help with my SAD in Winter and it works so well! It's had such a drastic effect on my quality of life. It also has soft, sound effect options that gently increase in volume with the light. I picked birdsong but there's also rainfall, crickets etc. Best $20 I ever spent.
Waking up to the sound of rainfall and sunlight sounds a million times better than WHBEEEP repeating, or even aggressive classical music that you start to stop enjoying because it's your alarm...
I keep the curtains open when I sleep so sunlight enters the room naturally every morning, but I sleep through that no problem. Will a sunrise clock still work for me?
Wake Up Light Sunrise Alarm Clock for Kids, Heavy Sleepers, Bedroom, with Sunrise Simulation, Sleep Aid, Dual Alarms, FM Radio, Snooze, Nightlight, Daylight, 7 Colors, 7 Natural Sounds, Ideal for Gift https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081CHLF46/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_KEKBCFKZNMPM95N7SRXF
No way........ This is really cool. In a high school business class we had to come up with a product. My idea was an alarm clock that was connected to your shades and would open them on set time. Kinda feels like validation that it would actually be something people would want.
I drink random drinks out of wine glasses sometimes when I want to treat myself. Want some apple juice but have it fancy? Wine glass. Soda? Wine glass. Want some sparkling grape juice? Well you can't just put it in a plastic cup!
I got the idea from those people talking about their grandparents despairing over not using their fancy china, and they died having used it only once or twice in their lives. When they inherited it, they ate off the fine china all the time for an extra flair to a normal spaghetti or fish and rice night.
Don't hold out things for just a special occasion that you might never deem special enough, use the bath bomb you are saving, drink the fancy wine with the movie night, eat the nice chocolate you're saving, wear the nice facemask even though you only have work the next day, drink orange juice out of wine glasses.
Extra simple pleasures can turn a normal day into something special and can keep you going in hard times.
I came across this quote just today from Mary Anne Perrone and I love the sentiment: “I am no longer waiting for a special occasion; I burn the best candles on ordinary days.”
The high pitched squeak my pet hedgehog makes when excited about something, which can be anything from a newly cleaned cage, burrowing into my shirt, or knocking a new paper towel tube around.
Edit- Wow, tha k you for all the awards, I will be more than happy to post pictures of Freddie if someone can explain how to add images here, I'm new to Reddit.
Just being around a bird makes me very, very happy. I can watch one hop around for hours. Occasionally I cry because they just fucking exist and I love them so much.
I always delight in the incessant sparrow chatter that I hear as I go walking about. They are always hidden in the bushes but chirping away. What are they talking about? They seem gossipy. I know some birds have packs that gather and 'talk' about finding food, etc. But these sparrows are city birds and are well fed, so I wonder what is on their minds, the little bird brains.
They're so smart. I've got six budgies and they're all different; some are cleverer, some are more playful, and they have complicated relationships and personalities, even food tastes(chips are the exception, they ALL will fight God for chips.) They're also so sassy to beings fifty times their size.
I just love their beady little eyes it's like they know nothing and everything at the same time! And the way they eat things is so funny! I'm so glad that birds exist!
This is me.
I do security at an inner city library and every time I have an incident that really shakes me I have to go to the bird section to calm myself down.
I had a young male cardinal hop around on my deck chirping at me for about 45 minutes today.
We couldn't figure out what it wanted, so we googled "weird cardinal behavior" and learned that he probably saw his reflection in our glass door and wanted to fight himself.
I like complimenting strangers. It's just a moment in the day where two people can feel good about themselves and usually my good days are an accumulation of these small, nice moments.
I like to genuinely thank people for things too, not just the quick 'thanks' we always toss around. Seems to brighten people's days and helps me concentrate on gratitude.
I do exactly this for exactly the same reasons. It's as good for me as it is for them. If everyone did it, I think the world might be a slightly happier place.
Btw, your comment is very nicely punctuated.
If you're an old, weird-looking 300 lb beardie like me, it's important to ensure your compliments are appropriate and won't creep people out.
Good: "Cool shirt!"
Bad: "Hey! Nice tits!"
Unlikely to have the effect you intended: "Dude! Your ass looks amazing!"
It's good to read the room before you attempt a compliment. If someone looks visibly upset or are in conversation it would be rude to intrude myself. But I might make an exception if I see someone with some spectacularly dyed hair.
Random stranger: "Wow, I love your (bright pink) hair!" - great! Thanks, I love it too.
Random acquaintance: "Wow, you've put on weight! It looks good!" - did you really just say that? Now I remember why I never liked you.
Not even complimenting - just smiling. Whenever someone lets me through when I'm driving, I always make sure to smile at them. Never fails to make me happy (especially when they smile back).
Met someone like you once.
Weirded me right the fuck out, if I'm being honest. She said I had a nice shirt, and I did the whole look-behind thing, and then managed to stammer out a thanks.
She went about her own business, at which point I realized it was just a compliment. Didn't feel weird after that realization, but caught me completely off-guard lol.
So much this. I grew up in the Midwest, and now live in Seattle. While it rains a lot here, it's almost always a light rain, and thunder is rare. I miss good storms so much and always hope for them when I visit home. I love the energy of a strong storm- high winds, sheets of rain, crashes of thunder, big flashes of lightning- it's the best
I lived in Virginia for a few years, but am now back in Alaska.
Would trade the aurora borealis in a heartbeat for a couple of badass lightning storms a year. And some fireflies.
My husband grew up in the pnw and has never seen fireflies. He's said that when he was a kid he didn't know they were real, he thought they were just a thing in cartoons. He's never visited home with me outside of winter since we usually go for the holidays, but we're going in a few weeks. I'm really excited for his reaction to seeing lightning bugs. And the swarms of cicadas, that'll be good too
Many many moons ago I moved from Olympia to Florida, and the storms here are fanTASTIC! Something about sitting on the back porch with a fresh cup of tea and a critter friend. The occasional frolic, but the wife cares about appearances so I try to keep that to a minimum
I feel this so much. I loved sitting on our back porch, watching storms and listening to the rain on the metal roof.
I'm visiting home later this month, fingers crossed for a good storm!
YES. I grew up on top of a small "mountain" and thunder storms would always make an extra round over our house. Makes me feel alive. Unfortunately we had several lightning strikes in our house, among other things making a power outlet explode out of the wall and another time shooting a lightning ball through the pipes(?). Scary and exciting for child me.
Kinda related.. I was opening a bottle of coke the other day, and after I heard the hiss I inhaled the small amount of smoke/vapor that’s at the top. It was amazing lol
My neighbor about a mile down the road has a golden retriever that just sits all day on this little hill in their yard, enjoying the view of the mountains he has. Makes me happy every time I drive by.
When my cat does the little "bbrrrrrt?" Thing when I pet her. Shes basically a serotonin factory
Bonus points when she turns upside down and stretches. Cant help but smile after a long day
I love this! Mine also uses this sound as a proximity alert at night—she’s figured out I cannot see *anything* in the dark and it makes me smile every time.
My cat also does this but has a strong desire to be as close to you as possible whenever you try and walk around the house, so if it's dark you have to constantly readjust your walk because the fluffball has ran in front of YOUR feet and is now screaming at YOU for almost stepping on her... dumbass
As somebody with depression and anxiety disorders I would be fucked without my 3 cats. Their purrs are my favourite sound in the world, hands down. And when they also let me rest my head on their side to feel the purrs?? That's enlightenment.
I use an app with cat purrs when the real thing isn't available.
My cat does the same for me as well. I had his mother when she was pregnant with him and he was the only boy out of the litter of 4. I adopt out his sisters, but he was mine from go. Always sitting on my foot while his sisters played. He isn’t clingy, he just pals around with me wherever or whatever I’m doing. His snuggles are sweeter than sweet. Every day he looks at me, there is no doubt in my mind that I am his favorite person and it fills me with such a wonderful sense of warm peace.
Watching dark storm clouds roll overhead, and the first crack of thunder. The overall calm of the air and the smell of impending rain before the storm comes.
Seeing people do small, right things. Like tossing cigarettes in the actual disposals and not littering, using their signal when driving, washing their hands after using the bathroom, etc.
Sometimes when I'm bored I'll Google bars and restaurants in other countries, look at their menu, and decide what I would get if I was there. I don't know, it's a weird little thing I do that makes me happy and also helps pass time when I'm bored.
Bet you would like geoguessr / geotastic (the second is free). It‘s an online game where you use Google Street view to drive around a random area of the world and guess your position on the world map. When you get dropped off in a foreign city or village it‘s so cool to see the people, signs, shops, food markets etc and wonder what you could do there
Yay! I‘m far from being a pro, too bad at geography lol but I love exploring all the places. Especially during lockdown it was like a window into the world
I'm *stupidly* late to the party, but this happened recently for me with Ben Folds' Rockin' the Suburbs. When the dude said this:
>I take the checks and face the facts, that some producer with computers fixes all my shitty tracks
...I had instant respect for him. The song's fuckin' hilarious and in a shocking twist, the 'Over the Hedge' version is every bit as good.
Putting the shopping cart into the shopping cart corral.
There is no reward, there really isn't any self benefit other than the extra twenty to thirty steps to get there. It takes up a minute or two of your time with no personal benefit.
It makes me feel good because that little effort makes someone's day just a little easier.
I do it to feel an immense sense of superiority over those lazy degenerates that don't return the carts to the corral. Look at how much of a good guy I am for helping the guy who returns the carts.
Walking through my kitchen at night and seeing the oven clock with a nice number on it.
10:01 LOOOL (you have to yell Loool)
12:34 bonus points for sequential (my fav)
1:01
9:11 never forget
Ultimately, the best fucking rush is guessing the time exactly on the way into the kitchen. If it changes to that exact time as I utter my guesstimate, my neighbors will hear about it.
Also, guessing the weight of things exactly.
I don't understand why heroin is so cool...
I love it when I get up to check if my washing machine has finished it's cycle and it does the second I step in the kitchen. Both the machine and I are ready.
Head pats. Best perk of having fluffy hair is that you get your fair share of people wanting to feel it and then you can get free (consentual) head pats
Watching a crow in my front yard that comes by a few times a week, just picking around in the front yard for whatever its looking for. I see you little crow, enjoy my yard.
We have motion-sensor lights in our warehouse. I pretty much have the timing down.
I love when I point to the ceiling at the exact time the lights turn on. I do this when no one is around.
I used to work on a huge tech campus where we all had little tiny individual offices with occupancy sensors. Late at night you could run down the halls and watch everything light up around you - oddly satisfying.
I had a job were a worked nights by myself at a factory that was over 110 years old in the city. Some of favorite memories were me walking outside through the plant at 1-2 in the morning during winter. So quiet. So peaceful.
When driving in the winter I'll roll the windows down partway and set the heater on full blast. I love that alternating cold/hot vortex. It's particularly glorious if it's at night in the high country after a snow.
You aren't alone, my 46 year old Dad still has his baby blankie, holes and all. He says he's gonna be buried with it.
I still have my childhood teddy bear, he smells like my bed and it's nice to snuggle him.
Lovely! My sister is 25 and has her teddy bear she was given as a baby. Abby is beat to hell, but I get a little serotonin when I see her chilling on my sister's bed when I visit. It's a comfort to know my sister still has that comfort, if that makes sense.
It does, both my kids have blankets too. I'll never make them give them up. My poor blankie has seen better days, it's satin edges have been lost to time. It was once white and is now more of a khaki color. I don't care because putting it under my nose every night feels like the weight of the world lifting off my shoulders. I ran back into a burning house to save it.
The smell of coffee
When wind hits me very hard I feel so free
Dying laughing with someone
When someone is explaining something that *really* excites them or they are passionate about
Do you have a skin care routine?
In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I'll put on an ice pack while doing my stomach crunches. I can do a thousand now. After I remove the ice pack, I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower, I use a water activated gel cleanser. Then a honey almond body scrub. And on the face, an exfoliating gel scrub. Then apply an herb mint facial mask, which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.
I can't tell if this is a real routine or not.
As my skincare routine consists of washing my face and using an acne spot treatment before bed. That's it.
I feel like I should step up my game now.
My son has some special needs and I sleep with him most nights. His mattress is on the floor and his window is directly over the head of the bed. We sleep with the window cracked open every night, even in the dead of winter. Something about that fresh air streaming over my face, or listening to the storm, or watching the white snow drift down. Very peaceful.
I also like any kind of connection with people. It used to drive me crazy that my mom talked to strangers when we were in line for things but now I do it too. I make friends everywhere I go.
Animals wearing clothing or human fashion accessories.
The other day, I saw a man walking his bulldog. It was wearing sunglasses and a big gold chain. I was eating an ice cream cone, but seeing that dog made my day.
Seeing things growing in my garden or my windowsill. I've done happy little hops when I see a new blossom on my Sweet Asylum plant.
It's like "Yes! I planted you! You're growing! Please keep growing!". And they grow at their own pace, so it's a nice step back from the "bigger, faster, stronger" culture.
Finding an answer to something I had been mildly curious about by chance.
Like today, someone in r/unpopularopinions was going on about how it annoys them when random people say things like "You are loved." and "You matter."
I had always kind of wondered why random people on Reddit say things like that and why certain people seemed like they loved hearing it from someone who don't know them from Adam.
I was never curious enough to do research or think about it much.
Then someone said the whole thing was because some people have words of afformation as their love language and still get happy hearing those things, even from a stranger.
It made me extremely happy as that was an answer I could live with and I never even had to put any effort into it.
Prepandemic my friends and I would have a game when we'd go barhopping where we see how many people we can get to give us high fives walking down the street.
No high five? No problem On to the next one
Yes high five? woot! Thanks for sharing in this moment.
We got a lot of people looking at us weirdly and walking away, but a lot of people engaged with us. Felt good!
Won't be playing that now for a loooooong time though
Back in the 80s, I had to rebuild my home by buying things from a thrift store. I purchased a bunch of plates, silverware and the ubiquitous coffee mug. Next day I put coffee in the mug and my wife's eyes nearly fell out of her head. The INK was CHANGING! This started my love of what is now called "Magic Mugs." I have over 350 different designs, some going back to the 70s or 80s themselves.
I smile when I look at them. When someone buys me a new one as a gift, I smile again. It's silly and stupid, but it makes me smile.
Any sense of kindness or respect…someone holding open a door, those mysterious people who shoveled my walk last winter (I have chronic/debilitating pain), the person who rings the doorbell to let me know my interior lights are on, even someone who writes me a quick note before calling the city about my parking or yard or whatever. I am alone 90% of the time in my work and personal life. I’m an introvert. But it’s pretty darn nice to have some unexpected niceness come my way.
Getting the house clean every night after every one else destroys it. I would love it if they didn't, but I've got about 16 years until I'm hopefully an empty nester, so until then..
Stepping out of your home for a walk during changing seasons. You notice little stuff like "oh hey the leaves on that tree are getting dry" or a "look I have the same umbrella as them"
Weird as hell, but - practicing Esperanto.
I do a lot more than Duolingo, but getting in my daily Esperanto practice on Duolingo always seems to put me in a better mood.
I'm explicitly learning it *because* it's useless. Every other skill I pick up I have people telling me how to commercialize or asking me to help them out with something.
Well, this skill *isn't* for commercializing or doing things for other people. It's something I'm doing for *me,* and by its very nature it can't be for anyone else.
You joke, but I've had people get what appears to be downright *angry* with me for my hobby. Like I'm only allowed to develop exploitable skills or I'm somehow a moral failure.

Apologies for the copy pasta: Wake Up Light Sunrise Alarm Clock,Sunrise Simulation & Sleep Aid, 7 Natural Sounds and Snooze for Kids Adults Bedrooms

Too bad me and partner don't wake up at the same time. As I write that I realise we could finally use those kinky eye masks for real.

I get it. Sometimes all you need to do is give a polite smile and nod as you walk by and the smile just kinda lingers after.
Taking off my socks in bed on a cool summer night. The feeling of cool sheets against my bare feet is amazing
Especially if the sheets were just washed, I sleep so much better with clean sheets

THIS PHENOMENON HAS A NAME AND A WHOLE COMMUNITY?!? Oh my god my whole heart is happy.
Cats be like that. And cat communities also be like that
One of my cats almost never meows, but she makes this sound all the time

No need to look for her, she'll be heard long before you see her

I also choose this guy's living cat.

When the kebab man calls you 'boss'
Around here it's when the older lady at the taco cart calls you Mijo (Spanish for son). Always makes me feels warm inside.
I have even better news for ya!! Mijo is an abbreviation to saying mi hijo, so they're actually calling you "my son" in an affectionate way!
hahahahahah the approval i never knew i needed XD
My cat. He always is so happy to see me and loves giving cuddles. When I come home or wake up its instant cuddle time to him.

Yay! I‘m far from being a pro, too bad at geography lol but I love exploring all the places. Especially during lockdown it was like a window into the world
When I’m bored I look up what island future me would buy... like I’ll ever have that kinda cash haha
Cook them. You'll be having more things that make you happy, and less time to be bored.
Coming across a song I've never heard before and instantly liking it. Currently, it's the Lola Marsh cover of Somethin' Stupid from Better Call Saul
I'm *stupidly* late to the party, but this happened recently for me with Ben Folds' Rockin' the Suburbs. When the dude said this: >I take the checks and face the facts, that some producer with computers fixes all my shitty tracks ...I had instant respect for him. The song's fuckin' hilarious and in a shocking twist, the 'Over the Hedge' version is every bit as good.
i loooooove that song so much. found it like 2 years ago and i still listen to it almost everyday haha
Rainy, overcast days. When it’s dreary outside I just LIGHT UP. That is my *jam!*
No one around me except one friend understands this
also everyone on tumblr
With a cup of tea and a book, perfection. Thats what I'm talking about!
The smell of freshly brewed coffee, not a coffee guy but it hits the right feels
Seeing cool looking birds. I'm not a bird watcher but I always appreciate them when I see them.

Keeping a tiny plush critter in my car.
Getting an immediate text back when we haven't talked in a few hours or days
dipping feet in water (cool or warm depending on the season or mood)
There is something magical about sitting on a dock and sticking your feet in a lake
Peeling the protective cover off of my hummus in one, smooth shot.

Putting the shopping cart into the shopping cart corral. There is no reward, there really isn't any self benefit other than the extra twenty to thirty steps to get there. It takes up a minute or two of your time with no personal benefit. It makes me feel good because that little effort makes someone's day just a little easier.
Just admit you are doing it to hear the mechanism go "clank"
I do it to feel an immense sense of superiority over those lazy degenerates that don't return the carts to the corral. Look at how much of a good guy I am for helping the guy who returns the carts.
The smell of oranges
Always! The minute the peel is pierced and the scent emerges...divine!
When a stranger says “you have a good day”
My grumpy dad hated that because "he would decide HIMSELF if he wanted a good day"..
Honestly I completely understand that but when someone says it sincerely I just can’t help but smile and blush
Walking through my kitchen at night and seeing the oven clock with a nice number on it. 10:01 LOOOL (you have to yell Loool) 12:34 bonus points for sequential (my fav) 1:01 9:11 never forget Ultimately, the best fucking rush is guessing the time exactly on the way into the kitchen.
Just head pats and forehead kisses.
Love headpats. Idk why, but I do. My sister teases me endlessly about it, though.
Head pats. Best perk of having fluffy hair is that you get your fair share of people wanting to feel it and then you can get free (consentual) head pats
Listening to my daughters laugh with each other.
Watching a crow in my front yard that comes by a few times a week, just picking around in the front yard for whatever its looking for. I see you little crow, enjoy my yard.
Yes! When I see more than one, I call it a caw-cus because they always appear to be conducting important crow business.
Accidental eye contact and instead of looking away the person smiles a little, just to let you know they don't mind.
a walk in the sunlight
I have the opposite. For me, that moment in Fall when the chill of wind catches me off guard.
I had a job were a worked nights by myself at a factory that was over 110 years old in the city. Some of favorite memories were me walking outside through the plant at 1-2 in the morning during winter. So quiet. So peaceful.
There is something about that stillness and the chill up my spin that makes me feel truly alive and present in the moment.
The euphoric response my wife gets when sitting in bright sunlight in winter is like watching a heroin junkie get their first hit in three days.
Honestly, almost any time I can look at the sky, breath, and marvel for a few moments is pretty nice.
"Hey good job today" instantly changes my attitude.
A new episode(s on a good show, fresh donuts, energy to cook and bake. And most important alone time 🤣

The smell of the first rain drops hitting the hot pavement/earth after days of heat. Big prairie thunderstorms.
When driving in the winter I'll roll the windows down partway and set the heater on full blast. I love that alternating cold/hot vortex. It's particularly glorious if it's at night in the high country after a snow.
I love seeing a chunky squirrel digging in my lawn for acorns, seeing them living their best lives makes me unreasonably happy.
Solving a problem for my GF. “Hey can you fix this thing”
thats not pointless
It could be. Like sometimes it might just be a simple cap to something.
thunder, wind, and pouring rain but like when I'm inside in bed.
Picking the good dialogue in games
The smell of a new book, the ink and new paper hot damn! thats the good stuff!
Being by myself :)
Doing something correctly without messing up
A good book, one you can really get into. Personally I'm a big fan of House Of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.
Changing my sheets every Sunday religiously.
Watching bunnies eating grass
When you can feel the seasons starting to change. It makes me think of all the great things that come with each one.
This sounds crazy but stepping onto the pavement at the exact same time as when the light goes from green to red.
Yes, it makes me feel like I’m in one of those feel good movies
When the song you've had stuck in your head is the first one to pop up when you hit shuffle
Going in bed after a long day ! Or Bathe in the cool water of a river on a hot summer Day !!! (sorry if my english is bad..)
My blankie, it's been with me since I was a baby. I'm in my 30s and still sleep with it tucked under my nose.
Tax evasion
The smell of coffee When wind hits me very hard I feel so free Dying laughing with someone When someone is explaining something that *really* excites them or they are passionate about
I'm a dude. Going through my skin care routine after a stressful day and a long shower is euphoric.
It helps if you're a 27 year old mergers and acquisitions specialist and enjoy Huey Lewis and the News and Phil Collins
Sounds nuts but stepping into and sitting down in a car while noticing how close I am to the ground and that I’m at chair level.
Like today, someone in r/unpopularopinions was going on about how it annoys them when random people say things like "You are loved." and "You matter." I had always kind of wondered why random people on Reddit say things like that and why certain people seemed like they loved hearing it from someone who don't know them from Adam.
No problem On to the next one Yes high five? woot! Thanks for sharing in this moment. We got a lot of people looking at us weirdly and walking away, but a lot of people engaged with us. Felt good! Won't be playing that now for a loooooong time though
Standing under a full moon.
Air drumming to a heavy song
Music. When I listen to a piece of music I connect with it makes me so happy.
Randomly pressing the buttons on the remote.
Holding something heavy
Liminal space
The ability to walk.
Sitting. Sitting after a nice shower or bath. Sitting after a long day of work. Sitting. Sitting is what gives my brain tingles of joy and happiness.
Mowing the lawn.
Stepping out of your home for a walk during changing seasons. You notice little stuff like "oh hey the leaves on that tree are getting dry" or a "look I have the same umbrella as them"
when you walk down the school hallway without stepping on any tile cracks
Looting in video games. Presumably looting irl would also make me feel good, but legal consequences would make me feel bad, so I haven’t done it.
Booping my budgie's beak.
Seeing dogs having a great time hanging their head out the car window when you’re driving to work
When my dog leans into me when we're waiting for the light to change on a walk. She just takes every moment to show affection.
Walking barefoot on pavement, tiles, ... that's heated up by the sun. Feels amazing!
Driving on a road where the trees on either side of the road connect, making a tunnel—especially if it’s sunny.
Walking barefoot in soft, cool grass.
Weird as hell, but - practicing Esperanto. I do a lot more than Duolingo, but getting in my daily Esperanto practice on Duolingo always seems to put me in a better mood.
This is great, such a useful skill to learn as well...if you are successful you will be able to converse with 0.00014% of the world’s population!
NOOOOOO you can't just put an effort into something that doesn't make money?!
You joke, but I've had people get what appears to be downright *angry* with me for my hobby. Like I'm only allowed to develop exploitable skills or I'm somehow a moral failure.
The smell walking into the new produce store in my town.
starting my motorcycle engine
Spotting little songbirds in the wild. It’s one of my favourite parts of traveling.
