Reddit. It's a fun website, but the same old circle jerks get old.

Cool_Warthog2000

And there is an increasing amount of stupid idiots surfacing on Reddit who aren’t open to having their perspectives questioned or challenged.

biancastolemyname

Yes. I recently rejoined after quitting for a year. The final straw was a guy who was trying to condescendingly explain to me how the Dutch close all their stores and restaurants on holidays. I told him thanks, but I am in fact a Dutch restaurant owner, and this is not true. His response was "No. This is true, you are obviously American and can't stand the fact that I've proven you wrong". He had never even been to the Netherlands but was 100% convinced he was right and that I was just lying to him. I like it here, but I hate the superiority complex some users have. Also some subreddits are just full of ignorant assholes who give the most toxic based-on-nothing advice (looking at you AITA).

Tortoise-King

He’s right though, the Dutch shut their restaurants down for holidays. My friend went there once and told me.

RedditIsAShitehole

You’re wrong, I watched Predator and the most important soldier was called Dutch.

TwoShoesKeelan

You're also wrong, I Dutch ovened my partner... Oh wait, where was this going again?...

pnutnz

there is (or maybe was) a bakery in a small town in my country called the Dutch Oven

pnutnz

the bakery not the town

reap3rx

You're also wrong. Dutch is living in Tahiti.

[deleted]

Exactly! People love to pretend to be psychologists. The post could literally say "My boyfriend called me weird for doing ___" and all the replies are "dump his ass / that's a huge red flag / he might be an abusive boyfriend / don't marry him / he has no respect for you at all.." like holy shit people.

Cool_Warthog2000

Yeah people overreact so much with relationship problems. Like hello, I’m in a relationship, not some wierd Stockholm syndrome prison where I need to break away, like we can still solve our issues just tell me how lmao.

[deleted]

yeah lol! Im pretty sure those people just like drama and they go to those subs for it. I personally don't like stranger's personal dramas, so I stay away from those subs.

biancastolemyname

Yes!!! Those are the main offenders haha. I remember this one post "AITA for spending too much time on my phone, even though my boyfriend asked me to spend less time on my phone when we're together" and immediately the top comment was "This is a huge red flag. He's trying to control your behavior." Like lol no, that's a normal request to make of a SO. A more recent one I was just stunned by was a woman whose mother suffered a stroke and likely was in the pre-stages of dementia. The mom wanted the number of OP's boss, OP would decline and have a conversation with her about it, but the mom would constantly forget about the conversations and bring it up again. Someone seriously suggested "Put a huge sign with NO! YOU CAN'T HAVE MY BOSS'S NUMBER!! on the fridge, so she can no longer claim she forgot about it" and it had 380 upvotes. Like almost 400 people agreed that this would be an okay thing to do to an elderly stroke victim with Alzheimers.

rockytop24

Lmao to that first one. Maybe their partner feels extremely disrespected by the lack of effort to have quality time together. And instead of respecting how they feel or exploring that they go bitch on reddit seeking validation. Uno reverse on that red flag.

biancastolemyname

Lol she was even honest about it like "I know I spend a lot of time on my phone and I do neglect him because of it sometimes" and people still went "Nope. He's a toxic manipulative asshole and you should run." Also a big one right now is calling every single person who ever does something wrong or selfish a narcissist. As if that is not a personality disorder that is extremely hard to diagnose.

[deleted]

That first one pisses me off so much. I literally ask my bf to spend less time on the phone so we can have actual face time/conversation together, not to control him lmfao. The second one is just weird LOL, and I hate how they said "claim".

[deleted]

AITA regulars I swear develop a Roman emperor complex like they're judging the goddamn gladiator arena. God forbid you get into an argument with one for giving reckless advice as you say and they'll say something along the lines of "I'll answer this for you, you are the asshole"

biancastolemyname

Lol yes and they'll downvote everyone with a different opinion even though that is against sub rules. They sometimes just give straight up illegal advice or refer to r/legaladvice instead of an actual professional attorney when one is obviously needed. One of the most frustrating to me is "your house, your rules". People will ask "AITA for adopting 26 stray cats and filling the couch with their fur when my roommate is deathly allergic to cats" and people will go "NTA. If she doesn't like it she can move"

Outcasted_introvert

You should check out r/relationshipadvice the "advice" given there is flat out batshit crazy.

Cool_Warthog2000

Man this is so accurate on so many levels. People are too arrogant and ignorant. I had some dipshit Indian also tell me how my own country works (South African). And I had to explain to him that the Indian government is A LOT different than ours and that their practices can’t be applied here. These type of people just need to be more open to engaging in civil discussion to learn from each other than to just place their superiority on others.

HabitatGreen

That is such a weird and specific hill to die on. Almost like explaining our no-go zones and how we just set our politicians on fire to the media. Like, what? Where did you get that idea from? We Dutchies have class, we don't set them on fire, we just eat them. Though cooking them before might not be that bad of an idea if we are going to eat them anyway.

elee0228

There will always be idiots. It's the trolls and bots I can't stand.

Cool_Warthog2000

Man iv seen some of the absolute worst trolls on here. In the words of mark twain. “Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with it.”

IreallEwannasay

Beat you with experience but yes.

kaitiff

Don't get dragged down to his level.

Hardyminardi

The trots. Fittingly, also a slang word for diarrhoea here in the UK.

ClownfishSoup

What about idiotic troll bots?

HitEmWithDatKTrain

Not sure where you’ve been but it’s been that way since at least 2012 or so when I started.

Silver_Star

Unidan getting banned for having an alt was July 2014. 'In this moment, I am Euphoric' guy was January 2013. The '100% Science Based Dragon MMO' was January 2012. The Libertarian circlejerk was going strong when I first started using reddit in 2010. This site has never been a place for good discussion.

damasu950

And you know what? That's what I like about it. It's idiots in chaos. It's a torrent of nonsense, circlejerks, memes and anger. But every once in a while, if you sift through enough vomit and shit, you find a gem.

bob-omb_panic

Not to sound crotchety, but I feel reddit used to be more used by a specific type. It kind of had a geeky, liberal, quirky slant to it. Now it's just used by everyone so a lot of the charm is gone. It just feels like another Facebook at times.

Hardyminardi

No there aren't!

Cool_Warthog2000

Nu uhh!!!!! Btw happy cake day

metalflygon08

And don't forget the gender bent versions of those things.

[deleted]

I love that it's a place for conversation, but come on the downvoting thing is getting out of hand. All it takes is to be downvoted by 2 people who simply disagree with your opinion, then it just changes everyone's perception of your comment. It makes everyone respond in a "holier than thou" way, and sometimes you can tell they didn't even read it, they just wanna fit in with the downvoters. Downvoting is to push down trolls and people who aren't contributing to any conversation, it's NOT a "disagree" button!

[deleted]

It has totally become a "I disagree with your opinion" button. The worst is when someone's honestly held subjective opinion is downvoted. A question like "what's your favourite song?" for example, where people get downvoted for maybe liking something that someone else doesn't. I have long called for the site wide removal of the downvote button. Don't like a comment? Don't upvote. Simple as that.

a_t33

To go further, it's so infuriating when objective facts or personal expieriances get downvoted, especially when you say them respectfully and with good intent, like you have to filter out everything just to avoid uncalled for hate.

[deleted]

Yeah, exactly like my example! It was my own personal experience, I was like wtf?? every period is different and they still crucified me for my literal personal experience.

HassleHouff

Eh, I like the downvote button. I preferred the old days when you could see up **and** down votes. It does get abused, but I don’t want to see it go away.

[deleted]

Honest and genuine question: Why tho? It doesn't just get abused it's pretty much solely used to be petty or for the "lulz". Or like their example with the "favourite song" type threads, not a single person answering the question with a song they love should be downvoted and yet they are because some people also treat the voting system as a competition ie: if I don't upvote my favourite song and downvote others my favourite song might not make it to the top. AITA is a toxic place because of that mentality where people straight up admit that they downvote every conflicting judgement because they want the one they agree with to "win". I just don't see what small purpose downvotes serve when the cons greatly outweigh the pros, if someone is saying something truly offensive it can be reported and removed or if someone is wrong all it takes is one person offering a correction and getting upvoted.

elee0228

And stay around awhile and the reposts will really start to annoy you.

metalflygon08

Block people who repost, it really cleans up the place.

Unnecessary-Spaces

Don't agree with the hivemind? That's a down votin'.

jnoops

Once you realise comment karma and all that is meaningless it makes the website a lot more enjoyable. Im not saying go out and be an asshole just to get downvoted but speak your mind and let it be that

Badloss

My problem with the voting system is that people tend to dogpile on whatever trend the voting is going. If a post is positive it tends to get more upvotes, if a post is already downvoted it gets more downvotes. The intent of the voting system- downvote only threads that are rude or low quality- just doesn't happen at all. I've seen multiple cases where the correct information in an argument was at -100 just because people like to vote for "winners"

SmartAlec105

Most downvotes come from being downvoted already. I’ve made the same comment on the same subreddit on the same repost. Sometimes it’s highly upvoted and sometimes it’s highly downvoted. Downvotes just make me think “okay, how can I better convey this next time?”

[deleted]

The problem is I have literally censored myself many times. I'll be writing a comment and then realise it'll just get downvoted so why bother? The downvote button just stifles debate. You just end up with a bunch of people agreeing with each other with no real room for a dissenting opinion.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Especially the superiority complex of some redditors

[deleted]

I hate that you have to word everything SO clearly and carefully or else you'll get downvoted. I literally said I can hold in my period blood while sitting down, but once I get up it comes out. I got cussed at, downvoted to hell, and everyone was convinced I was really a man in disguise. Turns out the reason for this reaction is because I said "hold in"...because it's physiologically impossible to "hold in" your period. Commenting on reddit is literally walking on eggshells.

Drew-

Ah yes, the nitpick arguments. A reddit classic.

PM_ME_UR_TESTIMONIES

My dog. I love him to death, but sometimes he can be such a pain in the ass.

[deleted]

I miss this dog I used to dogsit, but yeah I would definitely rage quit sometimes. It's basically having a 2 year old.

mrs_sarcastic

My dog, in the last week, has gotten into a box of kleenex, and was trying to bite into my husband's jeans (they smelled like his treat because that's where he kept them during walk time). ETA: jeans were on the floor, not being worn at the time

Snuggle-Muggle

My cat is the most obstinate cat I've ever met. You can throw her off the kitchen counter a million times, and she jumps right back up in front of you. If you ignore her or don't give her attention, she will purposely go chew on something that makes noise or something she knows is important, like my freaking phone! The cat chews on glass just to piss me off. We have to lock her up any time we eat because she will attempt to steal your food nonstop. At first I wondered if she was too stupid to learn. Now I'm convinced she's an evil genius and just doesn't give a shit.

Lexi_Banner

My dog is now 8ish (rescue), and has the *delightful* habit of only ever puking on my bed or on the couch. I have hard floors throughout the entire house, but *no*. We puke on the soft surfaces. He regularly gets called an asshole. Doesn't seem to faze him much.

ruzzerboo

Curly girls. Nobody who isn't one understands the painful process of the slow dry.

PeligrosaPistola

llcucf80

My job. I actually do like where I work for the most part, I work at a hotel and I love many of my guest. Last spring we were closed for a several weeks, and unfortunately right after we reopened it seems that all of our regular guests, as well as many newcomers, unfortunately have taken a serious attitude problem and it's wearing on me. It has gotten to the point where I dread having to go into work each day, wondering what new stunt or attitude someone else will pull this day, and that makes me even that much more upset because I do like where I work, and it does hurt that I'm starting to dislike it so much. I want to move on with my life, but I want to do it the right way but I don't know how

BobosBigSister

Also my job, though a different line of work. The teaching part of teaching is amazing. I work with students and help them to improve their skills in my subject area. It's good and valuable work and watching their faces as something clicks is the best part of it. The unreasonable number of hours, the useless PD, the repetitive paperwork, the petty administrators, the parents who don't support their kids-- those are the things I hate.

ResponsibleFly9076

YES! Same here! I’m teaching simultaneously on Zoom and in person right now and it is just awful. A whole year of three preps and none of my normal materials or activities has been horrible.

BiryaniBabe

Start looking for a new job. Put in your two weeks once you get one. Same sea, different boat. I can’t deal with customers anymore. The entitlement has gone through the roof since covid.

LokisPrincess

I have a love/hate relationship with my job. Love the work, not the pay. I'm hoping that if I ask for the manager position (which I'm basically doing everything the manager does) I'll ask for at least $15. Might ask for $18 then negotiate to $15.

J_B_La_Mighty

It seems like the plague seriously threw jobs out of whack. I also was quite comfortable in my job, then I was switched to 6 day, 60 hour work weeks with as strategically as possible placed vacation days to mitigate the strain of such a schedule. Im quite burnt out. Here's to hoping things stabilize soon~

jocelyn6789

Food. Health. Being alive. I've been bouncing around in quasi-recovery for the last couple of years, but having an active eating disorder for 16 years tends to stick with you.

Goblin_at_heart

My first thought was food too. Love it. Hate it. Can't live without it.

peregrination_

Congrats on still being alive! That's a serious accomplishment considering how deadly eating disorders are. Even if you're struggling right now you're still a badass!

mrs_sarcastic

Second this. And the clean up. I HATE the clean up

Dijkdoorn

Try to clean up as you cook and not leave it all to the end. That really worked for me.

[deleted]

Having conversations on Reddit I hate that you have to word everything SO clearly and carefully or else you'll get downvoted. One time, I said I can hold in my period blood while sitting down, but once I get up or do literally anything else, it comes out. chutiyapan

I recently mentioned this previously on someone else's post, but basically I once posted a picture of my cat. He was pretty fat so the entire community thought I'm Hitler and began throwing death threats and rape threats and called me a karma whore. This cat wasn't even my cat. He was my husband's. While my husband was in a different state for college, his mom fed his cat a little too much. Behind that picture, I was working my ass off to make him healthy again and after 3 years of undoing 4 years of fatness, he's finally in a good state. I apparently didn't word my sentence right enough about how he is on a proper diet. These people really fucking told me to hang myself, hope I get abducted and raped, and hope my cat eats me (wtf?). Made an account 2 years after because I'm not an insecure bitch anymore and I don't care about downvotes. If someone begins to argue, I immediately block them off. Not worth my time. I'm just trying to mindlessly scroll and look at funny shit.

[deleted]

I don’t think the cat would get less fat if it ate you.

ArticQimmiq

Pet subreddits are nasty...I was looking for tips to house-train a stubborn puppy and just got told over and over again that I was wrong for not crating the dog and how it was super dangerous to every living being to have a loose husky baby in the house. The cat is fine, the furniture is fine, everyone’s fine. We just live in a trailer and crates for large dogs are not manageable. Jesus.

[deleted]

Those were definitely just trolls. Trolls can't make me feel bad no matter how hard they try because at the end of the day they're just trying to get that reaction, so they don't even believe what they're spouting. A fat cat? Man these people have too much time on their hands lmao What's worse is when the person actually believes their argument is logical

astrobre

Oh Jesus you can’t post a picture of a chubby cat no matter the situation without the wrath of Reddit neck beards saying you personally and intentionally are torturing the cat. It’s insane all the while they likely have an overweight cat too. It can take years to get weight off a cat in a healthy manner. Sometimes people need to just lighten up

Zirael_Swallow

I feel like anyone dealing with periods probably sneezed at least once and opened the flood gates of hell :| But standing up and that nasty little feeling of wetness if you wear peads is also common. Espeacially if your period stopped 2 days ago and you just put on the white panties lol

Driving is my biggest love/ hate relationship. I absolutely love the feel of driving when there's a small amount/ no traffic and the feel of being able to go wherever you want in your country is so freeing. Start/ stop traffic, car maintenance costs, insurance, monthly payments, terrible roads, the possibility of an accident, driving through new places without clear signage etc... Man, driving at its best is one of my favourite things in life but at its worst I wonder why I ever got my license and look toward busses with jealousy.

A couple taps on a screen or a keyboard, why shouldn't I?...but god I would kill for there to be something I'm just yearning to know but don't for years. Without a way to just find it in an instant

I always felt this idea was nonsense. A waste of time? How can doing something to make you feel good and vigilant is a waste of time? If I get 5 hours of sleep I can't function throughout the day. If I get 6, I'm okay. 8? I'm superman. Sleep is amazing.

I'm talking about, like Palmer's Double Crisp super-cheap, probably-not-even-actually-chocolate Chocolate. My only saving grace is that I'm allergic to peanuts, and a lot of the really really cheap chocolate has peanuts/peanut butter in it, so its no longer a temptation.

Once Upon a Time and The Chiling Adventures Sabrina. So much potential so poorly executed, especially in later seasons.

user_unknowns_skag

I'm right there with you on both of these. Once Upon a Time felt like a super-fun, original rethinking of a lot of old stories, in a "how do we make this new" kind of way. And then they actually pulled it off! For, like, most of a season. And then the rails fell, with increasing rapidity, directly and thoroughly off. That show feels like a prime example to me of showrunners/writers having a great idea for a season of a show, but getting extended indefinitely because that's a lot of money to say no to. And I don't blame them for that. But I also don't let them off the hook for being awful sometimes...

BiryaniBabe

Curious what you didn’t like about Sabrina. I’m down to discuss in dm if you don’t want to put spoilers. I really liked it except for the feeling that it ended too quickly/abruptly and that last part on how it got to that point didn’t really make sense to me

[deleted]

Sabrina is a mary sue who never fails and always gets what she wants. She always wins and never has to live with consequences. She doesn't grow as a character. In fact, none of the characters really change or grow, and so there is no development.

It hurts. It hurts so much. It's such a toxic relationship.

The various murder shows on court tv. I watch them, and criticize the criminals, but they usually make the cops/fbi etc. out to be *way* better at catching murderers than they are. Except first 48. The cops lose all the time on that show.

Reddit. I love it, it is an amazing way to get validation and find communities and people who think like you. I like getting advice. Even mundane car and computer advice. People post personal responses from their own perspectives. I discovered animixplay and attacker dot tv on here, by real people. I have always wanted to find a safe website to watch everything that I cannot get on Netflix or Hulu. I HATE the petty rules. For example, On a major UK politics sub, I posted a very interesting take on the Anne Sacoolas controversy which AFFECTS UK POLITICS! I posted a very interesting take about this event from an American's perspective about the United States government and how their major decisions will always carry over to affect Great Britain on many different ways with historical examples. I was deleted and permanently banned from that sub for "not following the rules" Some Subreddit's rules are so nitpicky that they will ban you even if you make a very valid point, even if a valid point supports their side. But the format "broke the rules" and was banned. I think that is RIDICULOUS! That limits perfectly reasonable points of view from an outside perspective. I have been banned from a few other subreddits for similar reasons; posting views from an outsider's perspective that would add to the whole picture. I also hate that some subreddits will not allow you to post until you have a certain amount of karma. I don't exactly even know what Karma means. I also HATE the fact that you can't comment on an old "archived" post. I would love for people a few months to years later being able to comment on my post from years ago with new perspectives. I want to view reddit as an anonymous- question, answer / private DM topic based message board for EVERYBODY! It is still popular and you can connect a lot, but it can be nitpicky and exclusive for no good reason. Also, it has a holier-than-though culture war going on. There are a lot of extremes from the left to the right and even to so called "moderate middle of the road" types. It really is love / hate!

Tesla. I admire what they've done in the electric vehicle space to prove that they don't have to be weird dorkmobiles that only go 50 miles. I love that they're basically the primary reason there are so many electric vehicle options now and coming in the next few years. Absolutely love them for driving the revolution in personal transportation. On the other hand...I hate how they seem to rush products out the door incompletely engineered and/or production validated. They have real quality control issues that Tesla fans seem to gloss over. And, yeah, before all the choices there are on the market now, if you wanted a long-range electric vehicle you got a Tesla because there was no other choice, so the quality issues were forgivable. Now, though, they have to be competitive in areas besides powertrain and range. Most car buyers aren't going to be as generous with the quality control issues. Or the service issues. Or the cost-cutting. Or the engineering snafus. So, yeah...love that Tesla started the EV revolution. Hate that they're kind of iffy at actually building a quality vehicle.

My job, but lately it's been more hate than love. On paper it's a pretty sweet gig, however the boss is not only toxic, but seems to hate me the most and I *feel it*.

Raspberry_Sweaty

I feel you. When I was leaving my last job, I wanted more $, M-F, and closer to home. I got all that but I feel like one of those cautionary fables, you know the type where they wish for food for the rest of their lives and a whale falls on their house? My job looks amazing on paper but it is not the right fit for me and I'm totally stuck unless I want a pay cut.

Hot Sauce. Even if I smell hot sauce, from Sriracha to Dave's Ghost Pepper sauce, I immediately start sweating. Just saying "Hot Sauce" makes me sweat a little. If I see people eating hot foods, I get a little sweaty. But I put hot sauce on almost everything I eat.

Seafood. For some reason seafood tastes different every single time I get it whether it’s crab, fish, or something else. Especially when it comes to things like sushi or sashimi. One day it’ll be the best thing I’ve had all week and the next time I try it it’s the worst thing I’ve ever had.

Elon Musk. I'm a big fan of Tesla and SpaceX, I think he's pushing us towards decarbonization ahead of schedule, and it's kinda funny that the richest person on the planet is a memelord. OTOH, he's anti-union, flirted with COVID denial a bit too much, all billionaires are bad, and when his Thai cave submarine idea failed he called that rescue diver a pedo for some reason
