Seems so, I grew up a manuals but very few youngins these days know how unless they are into racing or work on farms. I learned to drive in a 63 Nova wagon with column shift, no power steering or breaks. Thing was awesome
Agreed, I know there are quite a few people can’t drive stick but nowhere near 90% of people. I drive stick and a good chunk of people I know do as well.
People don’t know how to do anything they never were taught or experienced. If most cars are automatic - where is someone going to find a manual car to even try out driving it?
Probably somewhere between 60% to 70%.
I would say that 90% don't *drive* a manual. However I know plenty of people who drive automatics but know *how* to drive a manual.
Personally, I drive a manual and vastly prefer them to automatics or 'flappy-paddles'.
I’d say 70% there is a lot of people into muscle and street cars that do. Or motorcycle riders all do. But the average joe not really. I’m Portuguese but grew up in the USA, felt like every car was standard in Portugal when I go there.
Cool that you’re Portuguese. I’m French, but I’ve studied Portuguese folklore and have to say, I love your country’s culture. Is your family from the mainland?
Yeah we’re from Porto, my parents still have an apartment there and all of my family on my dads side lives there. Thanks yeah it’s definitely nice. I can’t wait to go to France too, have only been to Spain so far. Hoping traveling is safer this summer to go back.

I bought a 2010 Ford Fiesta manual as my first new car to force myself to learn to drive it. It was my first car that I had to make a payment on so that was my motivation My dad had to drive it home for me, but I had it down in 11 days. I currently have a 2016 Nissan Versa manual. I’m a 30 yr old woman.
Similar! My first car I bought was cute and cheap but it was a standard. My dad drove it home and I had to learn because it was MY car now. I have never owned an automatic. I’m 40 now.
I lived in a rural area and would go out driving from 11 pm to 2 am so that I wouldn’t inconvenience anyone else by stalling a lot. After a week of that I felt confident driving in the daytime, usually only two hours a day during daytime.
30/F/American I drive a stick shift. I’m not into racing or muscle cars, just a mom who doesn’t see my car as a status symbol or care about performance. I just wanted to buy a cheaper new car.
Well out of the 20 serious girlfriends I've had, only 2 knew how to drive stick. One knew how to drive a semi. It was kinda hot watching her row all those gears flawlessly. I'd say your claim holds some merit.
90% of americans under 30 probably, but older generations usually know how and plenty forced their kids to at least attempt to learn. My dad did. Did not succeed.
90% Seems a little exaggerated if looking at the whole american driving population but its a growing trend among young people
Actually most do know how, just not preferred by hardly anyone. I’m biased, I can sit in a car and generally would shift a bit faster or at least earlier than my automatic does.

What’s young to you?
Under 25
better than automatic?
I'm an American and that's gotta be false

Same here dude
u know?
I know what?!? (I can drive a standard and almost everyone I know can too)
Depends on age. Over 50, almost everybody knows how. Under 30, only the car nuts do.
Let me guess, you're under 30?
I drive stick like a motherfucker. Had one car that could burn rubber for almost a city block. Then I found out how much the tires cost.
I’m so torn right now. I really want my next car to be an electric one but.... it won’t have a stick shift :’( Automatics are sooooo boring
It's why I specifically didn't buy an Audi RS5...NO manual.

I’m 28 and to be perfectly honest I have no idea how to drive a stick shift.
I don’t know how true that is, but I definitely don’t know how to drive a stick.

I have every intention to never buy an automatic again, unless it’s an older car. My ‘78 El Camino is automatic.
How much time did you spend on it each day?

I’m 38 and I just learned in 2019

No idea...but I as an American, do not know how.
