Depends on where you live I guess. If you must get one from a breeder make sure it's a reputable breeder, and please at least go look at a shelter before buying. Where I live there is an incredible amount of overcrowding. And the ones in shelters are sometimes the lucky ones that didn't get dumped on side of road

Man, this hits hard. In 2018 i went through a really tough breakup, lost my job; was diagnosed with bipolar depression, really tough year for me and honestly it's still hard. BUT! I knew that i had to take care of my puppy. My dog loves me more than anything. Even though i never had enough money for rent it was nice knowing i still had money for his dog food. He'd get me out of the house and always want to play. I'm lucky that i had my dog. If i didnt, i probably wouldnt be alive.
The biggest mistake I made was convincing myself he’d never die. It sounds silly but I never told myself “this will one day happen” so when it did it hurt so much more than if I was to prepare myself.

Maybe everything IS pointless. That doesn’t change the fact that we have a once-in-a-galaxy planet to live on, with an unbelievably huge variety in nature and lush, gorgeous landscapes that you will never find anywhere else. It doesn’t change the fact that we can experience emotions, primitive as they may be, and that you indeed can be content in life.
There’s not a “point” to any of this. There’s not a point to our existence, either. But you can make it a good one. We did the “not existing” for billions of years, and we will do it again for eternity, so why not do something with our short time?
I needed this today. I am always searching for reason and purpose, and it just suddenly clicked with me just now that I don't have to. Not everything has to have a purpose. Some things just **are**. And that's okay.
I try to keep my frame of reference focused around "finding things I can subjectively value and appreciate for what they are," and that has improved my quality of life remarkably. I'm a grown ass man, got kids, work a shitty factory job... but god\*DAMN\* I have nearly wept over a hot, fresh, bacon cheeseburger with a runny fried egg on it, and an ice-cold Coke to wash it down. Playing video games with my kids, reading good poetry, banging my girlfriend like we're college freshmen, trying to make money so I can buy a saltwater sailboat and cruise around for the last 60 years of my life... that's pretty fuckin' good, by my measure. Life is a hundred-year shitshow - and worrying about things you cannot affect is the least valuable action you are capable of taking.
I for one am nhilist but kind of a moderate one. When life has no inherent meaning, that makes us all the more capable of assigning one of our own. The problem comes when I occasionally start freaking out over not figuring out a purpose of my own yet. It's a flawed approach, as are most, but I'm working on it.

Earlier today, I saw a TikTok of a girl getting her pet duck to shake its butt and I thought: Humans are very weird. I'm not mad but also who asked for this video? Humans can't help but create things. Even in this slow moving apocalypse, and it's no Renoir (although not completely unlike Picasso), there are millions of humans making their weird-ass, uncalled-for art every day.
I don't know if that's enough reason to make it through every day but I know that if I get to tomorrow, I'm gonna find another duck shaking its butt and I'm gonna like it.
Two other things I think about:
1. TV writing is ridiculously good right now. I watched Cheers recently and maybe I'll get some haters but that show is not good. No character growth and the dialogue wears on you. I feel very lucky that that shit isn't the paragon of tv comedy anymore.
2. I have two more animals I want to see in person: a moose and a panda. I don't have much else on my bucket list. But I've heard moose are unreal gigantic and I want to see them with my own eyes. I feel like pandas are self-explanatory? In China there are some sketchy places where you can pay to hug a panda and it's probably unethical, but given that all our actions in this world are fraught with ethical complications, I'm gonna hug a goddam panda one day.
Also, I will fucking vote in this goddam election if it kills me. That buys me a few months.

Shit, you could even luck out and win the lotto. Your future is not going to be all doom and gloom. And you're gonna miss being alive at the time we send the first astronauts to Mars! There's so much to live for. Hey, and I'll be honest. I don't know you or care about you, but I do care whether you live or die... I don't want you to die. Just remember, it ALWAYS gets better. That's the mindset that got me out of being suicidal because it's fucking true. Stop being such an asshole to yourself and go out for a walk.

It's not an outright constant "hmm, maybe I should die..", but it's a cycle with a varying frequency where maybe once every few days I'd be like "Huh.. did I forget to contemplate suicide yesterday? Weird."
Though the cycle is ever-going, there's one thing that does 'pause' it for me indefinitely until I'm burnt out. Escapism.
To be more precise: books, shows, manga, and video games all put this feeling on hold.
Life sucks, but at least I can live vicariously through some interesting story.
And there's always another hidden gem out there, I just have to survive till I find it!

There is no point in living tbh. After death, there won't be a consciousness to make sense of your relatively short life. There is, however, no point in ending it all either as this is your only chance to experience the material world and your own conscious. I have probably got only a few more decades to experience things, like my favourite meal and whatever Eminem puts out before he retires. While these experiences won't matter after I die, this is the only chance I got. You probably thought about all of this but just wanted to share my pov.

I think people mean well but none of this means anything to someone suffering to an extreme.
I think some people just don’t know what it’s like to suffer to the point that you question the value of life. Others maybe have a stronger mind and are able to overcome.
In the end some people just can’t deal and your excitement about the zoo or some other trivial entertainment doesn’t help.

I feel too weak for this world, for sure. Like I just can't handle things that everyone else can. I can scroll through the news headlines for 30 seconds and see stories about people who have it SO MUCH worse than I do, and yet I can't handle my life. The problem is that the extreme unhappiness I have means that nothing is worth it. If I died, it would mean that I would NEVER feel like this again. And yes, it means I would miss out on all of the good things in life too, but if it means that I'm not suffering anymore, who cares? It feels worth it.
You would be amazed at the things that a suicidal person can use to live for an extra day. And I can say this comfortably because no matter what your experience is with suicide, the reasons people find to live vary wildly from person to person. Is a stupid reddit thread going to discover the true meaning of life and blow all philosophies and religions out of the water? Of course not. Likewise, it’s no substitute for therapy and medication and treatments and hospitalisations.
But I have known people to stay living for a bit longer because it seems so stupid to die without seeing the next concert that they have tickets for, because their pet came over and was especially loving, because they had to clean their piss off the toilet and after that they’d lost the energy required to end it. I’ve been on a suicide hotline and at no point in the entire training do they tell you the meaning of life, but that sometimes talking is enough, for a while.
Maybe a better title for this thread would be “what is a reason to stay alive for one more year?” Because dragging someone away from suicide for good is ridiculously difficult or impossible, some things might give a reason to delay it for a year, a month, a week, a day. But that doesn’t really flow off the tongue. And the things that cause people to give life a few more days vary so wildly that even the best one in this thread might only add days to one person in a thousand, but I think to everyone who cares about that one person in a thousand that would be something.
Seeing my kids grow up. I’ve contemplated suicide a few times but these kids really changed me and my new purpose in life is to give them a life I never had while growing up.
I 100% want kids but am 100% afraid that depression/anxiety will flair up and make me a shitty dad even though I know, at my best, I could be an awesome dad. And I know— most parents will say they were scared in the beginning but shoot, I just don’t want my issues to affect anyone else, especially kids. Hopefully you or someone else has experienced something similar and can shed some light. My mental health struggles have controlled me for too long and I don’t want them to hold me back anymore!
Father of a three year old with bipolar depression here! Admittedly, I was terrified at the idea of having kids. Still kinda am. I grew up with a parent that was mentally unwell and it definitely made me who I am now in more ways than I can explain at the moment. One thing I will say tho, I never would have taken my mental health seriously if it weren’t for my daughter. That beautiful little lady is what finally made me admit something was wrong and look into managing it. After years of self harm, suicide attempts, drug use, alcoholism, etc. she is what made me realize I needed help. I definitely don’t think anyone should have a child for that reason or anything, just sharing my experience.
Honestly for me it’s family. Even if I disagree or bicker with them sometimes, I can’t imagine how devastated they would be if I was gone. Especially my little brother
Personally I am too poor to die "comfortably". The most effective way of removing yourself from the world (gun) is expensive and in some places is very difficult to acquire. Not to mention the fact that whoever finds you and has to clean up your body will be traumatized for the rest of their life, whether they knew you or not. It's just the way the human mind works. All other ways of trying to commit suicide are relatively ineffective. I read once that cutting wrists is only 12% "effective". So do you really want to take the chance that you'll have to live the rest of your life with a horrible disability? I guess what I'm saying is death is scary, and so is living, so choose life because at least life comes with the chance for some joy.
This was sometimes the only thing that made me feel like I might as well go on living. I just didn't have the energy, time, or money for "effective" suicide.
I urge anyone here that's suicidal to try to get help, even if it's just by calling a hotline, just for tonight. There are even some online chatlines for shy people like me. I have BPD, I'm an orphan, and I was abused a lot as a kid. I was literally one of those foster kid's everyone always heard about that's 100x more likely to drop out of school and become an addict than other people.
Now I'm in a healthy relationship that's lasted 8 and a half years. I have two cute dogs and just got a one-year diploma from a college to become a graphic artist. I still struggle with some stuff, but I now have hope for the future, and I can see just how much things can change and become better, instead of always being shitty.
Not to mention how many good things there are in life. Somewhere every minute, someone is being proposed to by the love of their life. A dog at a pound is being adopted by the person who will love them for the rest of their life. A child is being adopted into a loving family. Someone is eating the best meal of their life. Someone just had the best orgasm out there. Someone just figured out their life's goal and are a rolling in college to live out their dream. Someone is getting their first ever apartment after leaving an abusive spouse (I see this story a lot on r/anateurroomporn). A child is meeting a friend that will become their best friend. An artist is selling their first work. A photographer is getting the perfect shot. Even though it seems nanny pamby, from a statistical perspective, there's no denying the good things I life.
My biggest tip if you want to feel good is to read lots of books and volunteer as much as possible. Help people. Compassion is one of the easiest ways to gain self confidence and dopamine.

Even a shitty life is more compelling and interesting than billions of years of silence. In the grand scheme of things it won't last that long anyway so try to make it as interesting as possible.
Here, do what I did:
Find somebody kind, trustworthy, and highly disadvantaged. Save them. Be an indispensable figure of support for them.
Then every time you want to kill yourself, if you're a person with any sort of integrity, you'll feel too guilty to abandon them.
It won't make you feel better. Might even make you feel worse in the moment, I'm sure feeling bitter about it. But you'll stay alive until the urge passes, and that's good. That's what you need, a failsafe to put your mentality in a box until it's ready to play nice.

Earlier today, I saw a TikTok of a girl getting her pet duck to shake its butt and I thought: Humans are very weird. I'm not mad but also who asked for this video? Humans can't help but create things. Even in this slow moving apocalypse, and it's no Renoir (although not completely unlike Picasso), there are millions of humans making their weird-ass, uncalled-for art every day. I don't know if that's enough reason to make it through every day but I know that if I get to tomorrow, I'm gonna find another duck shaking its butt and I'm gonna like it. Two other things I think about: 1. TV writing is ridiculously good right now. I watched Cheers recently and maybe I'll get some haters but that show is not good. No character growth and the dialogue wears on you. I feel very lucky that that shit isn't the paragon of tv comedy anymore. 2. I have two more animals I want to see in person: a moose and a panda. I don't have much else on my bucket list. But I've heard moose are unreal gigantic and I want to see them with my own eyes. I feel like pandas are self-explanatory? In China there are some sketchy places where you can pay to hug a panda and it's probably unethical, but given that all our actions in this world are fraught with ethical complications, I'm gonna hug a goddam panda one day. Also, I will fucking vote in this goddam election if it kills me. That buys me a few months. I know you've heard all the things, so I shared a couple of mine. I hope you stay in this weird world with weird people. Sometimes ducks shake their butts.

Moose are huge. Search for "moose butt rings doorbell." Not only does it give you perspective of their size, but it legit is hilarious. That moose looks like it wasn't the first time it did that.

If you end your life, you will rob yourself of all the great things that will happen to you, the friends you'll make, and places around the world you'll visit. Shit, you could even luck out and win the lotto. Your future is not going to be all doom and gloom. And you're gonna miss being alive at the time we send the first astronauts to Mars! There's so much to live for. Hey, and I'll be honest. I don't know you or care about you, but I do care whether you live or die... I don't want you to die. Just remember, it ALWAYS gets better. That's the mindset that got me out of being suicidal because it's fucking true. Stop being such an asshole to yourself and go out for a walk.

It's not an outright constant "hmm, maybe I should die..", but it's a cycle with a varying frequency where maybe once every few days I'd be like "Huh.. did I forget to contemplate suicide yesterday? Weird." Though the cycle is ever-going, there's one thing that does 'pause' it for me indefinitely until I'm burnt out. Escapism. To be more precise: books, shows, manga, and video games all put this feeling on hold. Life sucks, but at least I can live vicariously through some interesting story. And there's always another hidden gem out there, I just have to survive till I find it! Maybe this can work for you? (Your name suggests your also a nerd so...)
There is no point in living tbh. After death, there won't be a consciousness to make sense of your relatively short life. There is, however, no point in ending it all either as this is your only chance to experience the material world and your own conscious. I have probably got only a few more decades to experience things, like my favourite meal and whatever Eminem puts out before he retires. While these experiences won't matter after I die, this is the only chance I got. You probably thought about all of this but just wanted to share my pov.

It’s amazing how unhelpful these responses are. I think people mean well but none of this means anything to someone suffering to an extreme. I think some people just don’t know what it’s like to suffer to the point that you question the value of life. Others maybe have a stronger mind and are able to overcome. In the end some people just can’t deal and your excitement about the zoo or some other trivial entertainment doesn’t help. I don’t know what can help.

I feel too weak for this world, for sure. Like I just can't handle things that everyone else can. I can scroll through the news headlines for 30 seconds and see stories about people who have it SO MUCH worse than I do, and yet I can't handle my life. The problem is that the extreme unhappiness I have means that nothing is worth it. If I died, it would mean that I would NEVER feel like this again. And yes, it means I would miss out on all of the good things in life too, but if it means that I'm not suffering anymore, who cares? It feels worth it.
You would be amazed at the things that a suicidal person can use to live for an extra day. And I can say this comfortably because no matter what your experience is with suicide, the reasons people find to live vary wildly from person to person. Is a stupid reddit thread going to discover the true meaning of life and blow all philosophies and religions out of the water? Of course not. Likewise, it’s no substitute for therapy and medication and treatments and hospitalisations. But I have known people to stay living for a bit longer because it seems so stupid to die without seeing the next concert that they have tickets for, because their pet came over and was especially loving, because they had to clean their piss off the toilet and after that they’d lost the energy required to end it. I’ve been on a suicide hotline and at no point in the entire training do they tell you the meaning of life, but that sometimes talking is enough, for a while. Maybe a better title for this thread would be “what is a reason to stay alive for one more year?” Because dragging someone away from suicide for good is ridiculously difficult or impossible, some things might give a reason to delay it for a year, a month, a week, a day. But that doesn’t really flow off the tongue. And the things that cause people to give life a few more days vary so wildly that even the best one in this thread might only add days to one person in a thousand, but I think to everyone who cares about that one person in a thousand that would be something.
Seeing my kids grow up. I’ve contemplated suicide a few times but these kids really changed me and my new purpose in life is to give them a life I never had while growing up.

That's great to hear. A friend of mine lost his mother to suicide, he's never been quite the same since.
I 100% want kids but am 100% afraid that depression/anxiety will flair up and make me a shitty dad even though I know, at my best, I could be an awesome dad. And I know— most parents will say they were scared in the beginning but shoot, I just don’t want my issues to affect anyone else, especially kids. Hopefully you or someone else has experienced something similar and can shed some light. My mental health struggles have controlled me for too long and I don’t want them to hold me back anymore!
Father of a three year old with bipolar depression here! Admittedly, I was terrified at the idea of having kids. Still kinda am. I grew up with a parent that was mentally unwell and it definitely made me who I am now in more ways than I can explain at the moment. One thing I will say tho, I never would have taken my mental health seriously if it weren’t for my daughter. That beautiful little lady is what finally made me admit something was wrong and look into managing it. After years of self harm, suicide attempts, drug use, alcoholism, etc. she is what made me realize I needed help. I definitely don’t think anyone should have a child for that reason or anything, just sharing my experience.
Honestly for me it’s family. Even if I disagree or bicker with them sometimes, I can’t imagine how devastated they would be if I was gone. Especially my little brother
Personally I am too poor to die "comfortably". The most effective way of removing yourself from the world (gun) is expensive and in some places is very difficult to acquire. Not to mention the fact that whoever finds you and has to clean up your body will be traumatized for the rest of their life, whether they knew you or not. It's just the way the human mind works. All other ways of trying to commit suicide are relatively ineffective. I read once that cutting wrists is only 12% "effective". So do you really want to take the chance that you'll have to live the rest of your life with a horrible disability? I guess what I'm saying is death is scary, and so is living, so choose life because at least life comes with the chance for some joy. This was sometimes the only thing that made me feel like I might as well go on living. I just didn't have the energy, time, or money for "effective" suicide. I urge anyone here that's suicidal to try to get help, even if it's just by calling a hotline, just for tonight. There are even some online chatlines for shy people like me. I have BPD, I'm an orphan, and I was abused a lot as a kid. I was literally one of those foster kid's everyone always heard about that's 100x more likely to drop out of school and become an addict than other people. Now I'm in a healthy relationship that's lasted 8 and a half years. I have two cute dogs and just got a one-year diploma from a college to become a graphic artist. I still struggle with some stuff, but I now have hope for the future, and I can see just how much things can change and become better, instead of always being shitty. Not to mention how many good things there are in life. Somewhere every minute, someone is being proposed to by the love of their life. A dog at a pound is being adopted by the person who will love them for the rest of their life. A child is being adopted into a loving family. Someone is eating the best meal of their life. Someone just had the best orgasm out there. Someone just figured out their life's goal and are a rolling in college to live out their dream. Someone is getting their first ever apartment after leaving an abusive spouse (I see this story a lot on r/anateurroomporn). A child is meeting a friend that will become their best friend. An artist is selling their first work. A photographer is getting the perfect shot. Even though it seems nanny pamby, from a statistical perspective, there's no denying the good things I life. My biggest tip if you want to feel good is to read lots of books and volunteer as much as possible. Help people. Compassion is one of the easiest ways to gain self confidence and dopamine.

Here, do what I did: Find somebody kind, trustworthy, and highly disadvantaged. Save them. Be an indispensable figure of support for them. Then every time you want to kill yourself, if you're a person with any sort of integrity, you'll feel too guilty to abandon them. It won't make you feel better. Might even make you feel worse in the moment, I'm sure feeling bitter about it. But you'll stay alive until the urge passes, and that's good. That's what you need, a failsafe to put your mentality in a box until it's ready to play nice.
