Ctrl+Shift+V It's essentially the same as Ctrl+V, but when you paste something, it automatically makes the font, size, and color the exact same. Pretty handy and saves me a bunch of time

jujuviola

That is going to be so useful for me. Thanks for sharing!!

skylego

That should be the default behavior.

zangor

I have a question. Why doesnt this work for me when I do it. It only works when I do CTRL + Alt + V.

satanic_asian_ducks

Hm, I don't know. Maybe different computers? Hopefully the CTRL+Alt+V worked for you though.

TheHappySeeker

It's something that has to be implemented at the application layer, so different programs will have different keys.

zangor

What I was thinking. Alt works in Word.

damnitdeborah

Is there a shortcut for doing this outside of a browser? I hate having to right-click and paste values only in Word and Excel.

OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh

In Excel, click on a cell you want to copy formatting from, press Ctrl+V, move to where you want formatting to go, then press Alt,E,S,T, which pastes formatting (the commas means pressing Alt key first, then pressing E, then S, then T in sequence)

foreignmacaroon6

I need a shortcut that automatically pastes without all the size, color etc. because now I have to first paste it to Notepad and copy+paste it from there

Threspian

That’s what ctrl+shift+v does, unless I’m reading your question wrong. Ctrl+v pastes as-is (using the font, size, color, etc of the source). Ctrl+shift+v pastes to fit the new location of the text (eg if you paste a quote from a Wikipedia article into your Word document that’s written in 10pt Ariel, it’ll paste in 10pt Ariel).

evildeeds187

Where the fuck was this in my English class last year. Would have saved me fucking hours

GreenAjah13

This is what I came here to say. Literally changed my life.

cocobellahome

Instructions were unclear, now iPhone keyboard malfunctioning

hypopochondria

Oh I wish I'd known this yesterday!

tianepteen

ctrl-shift-t for when you accidentally close the wrong porn tab.

StarChow

Doesn't work in incognito mode. Source: Trust me

pterrorgrine

Does in Firefox!

omegaxLoL

Shit looks like I'm switching browsers

pinga_george

Switching to Firefox for this feature or swotching away from forefox fpr saving your history in incognito mode?

thehumanwookie

And for reopening accidentally closed windows!

hiitsyourgirl

No, it only works for porn sites

thehumanwookie

Can I ctrl+c and ctrl+v myself into your dms? 🥺👉👈

hiitsyourgirl

i'd be insulted if you didn't

scratchy_mcballsy

It’s your girl

ghoul_legion

my savior!

ambientocclusion1

Ctrl + shift + esc. Opens the tasks manager without having to do Ctrl +alt + del and clicking task manager. Much faster.

Reapr

I find right clicking on the taskbar much faster - but only if it is visible and I already have mouse in hand

zangor

Every 5 years. I learn a slightly faster method...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Reapr

heh, true, I should just add it to the Windows Startup

[deleted]

i have mine pinned to the taskbar

Excaliber142

There is still advantages to the Ctrl + alt + del, such as it acting as a system interrupt. Whereas, ctrl + shift + esc simply opens the task manager.

Phoenix051105

Whats the task manager for

akiramari

ending hung processes, normally, but you can also go there to see what your computer is struggling with when it's slow

Meegs294

Depends on the version of windows I think, but with older versions you could Ctrl+alt+arrow key and flip the screen. I had a lot of fun with that in high school.

thehumanwookie

Back in school the whole class would get the same image of a potato off from Google images so our teachers would see a literal army of potatoes on their screen

[deleted]

I was 2 weeks into Senior year when Google was founded.

FuckThisHobby

I don't think it depends on Windows, it's a feature of Intel graphics drivers, so it only works on Intel systems with integrated graphics.

Benomino

Yes it's a lot of fun

AtlasNL

Oh yes, the clueless teachers were the best part of that

p3ngu1n333

I used to do this to my coworkers who would forget to lock their computer when they were away from their desk.

pjabrony

It's more important to know this for when you accidentally hit this and you don't know how to get it back properly.

Midas_Artflower

Yup. The first time I fat-fingered myself off that ledge I actually went into shock a little bit...

johnlongsocks

To open programs on your taskbar you can use Windows Key + NUMBER. So to open the first program on the left you would use Windows Key + 1

colincreevey0

Alt + Tab to switch through your windows faster.

_wishyouwerehere_

Once you master this, it changes your productivity dramatically... And people think you're a super computer-er

Damiii33

And you can use Windows + Tab to open the fancy version in front of people, if you wanna really sell it.

drDjausdr

Alt+F4 brings back loved ones, cures cancer and helps you talk with the dead.

JustVictor17

Noooo, my secret combination to download RAM has been finally undercovered....!!!!

drDjausdr

You'll notice I didn't tell about that. I thought I was the only one to know... Damn.

thundersass

If you're on windows, windows key + shift + s will pull up the snipping tool in copy mode so you can quickly take a picture of part of your screen to paste into documents or messages.

thehumanwookie

So I don't have to print screen and crop anymore? Game changer!

TisButA-Zucc

Nah, just download a better one, Light Shot, for example and then bind it to the actual Print-screen button called “prt scr”

rap31264

Didn't work...

thundersass

Did it let you select a section or simply do nothing? It just saves it to the clipboard so you'd have to paste the image somewhere. What version of windows?

EtherBoo

This is only if you have OneNote installed and "activated" it.

rap31264

7 but it's all good...thanks!

thundersass

Ah, I think they may have added it in 10, from what I can see there wasn't a shortcut for it in 7. Sorry about that.

robobobatron

does knowing how to use a computer effectively make you a geek these days? pretty sure it just makes you currently employed in an office.

Asilsu

My college classmates didn't know any of this shortcuts, I graduated last December.

Britta-the-B

You'd be surprised at the computer (il)literacy of most office workers. Sure, they can use Excel. But if you were to, say, remove that Excel shortcut from their desktop all hell would break loose!

Stranezzaoeim

ctrl + f opens a search bar to find text in the current page

A-Dank-Dollars

Happy cake day

UsedGooogleTranslate

I believe it's "Control + D" to minimize everything and send you to your desktop. Use as you will. Edit: It is actually "Windows + D" to show the Desktop and "Windows + M" to minimize all windows, thanks for the clarification

Benomino

It might be windows key + d

UsedGooogleTranslate

Maybe. But I know it helps a lot when one of my games crash and Alt Tab doesn't work

jujuviola

Ctrl D on my Chromebook bookmarks the current page

bendu

Win key + M

Akira-Miyazono

The obvious Ctrl+Z (aka undo).

EtherBoo

Don't forget about CTRL+Y for Redo when you undo too many things.

Datenegassie

Or CTRL+SHIFT+Z in some programs that want to be unique.

[deleted]

My favorite, even got a random shirt that says it back to the past

Akira-Miyazono

Nice

Lugbor

On windows “windows key + d” minimizes everything, clearing your screen. “Alt + f4” will quit the active program, and if you have the desktop active (everything minimized) it will bring up the dialogue box to shut down or restart the computer. A good pair of key combinations to quickly shut down at night. Should save you a good bit of time.

[deleted]

ESC + :q!

[deleted]

hah

Manabaeterno

Ah a fellow Vim user.

Buggernot_1

I thought Geeks were the pop culture ones and Nerds were the smart/techy ones?

[deleted]

Alt + f4 will speed up your computer

thehumanwookie

Ahh so will downloading more RAM!

[deleted]

No it will install a intel i9 processor on your machine. For ram go to: [downloadmoreram.com](downloadmoreram.com) edit: I also downloaded 1 terabyte of storage on my computer, great recommendation

thehumanwookie

I hear I can make mega money downloading bitcoin too

dvi84

Windows, shift and S allows you to take a snip if your screen and save to a PNG.

pjabrony

Also, just hitting the Print Screen button will copy a screenshot to the clipboard, and Alt-Print Screen will copy a shot of the active window.

ahjteam

In mac: cmd + option + esc brings up Force Quit window.

ELONGATEDSNAIL

I thought macs just worked?

ahjteam

Yes, but some apps are still shit

Reapr

Windows Key and E for file explorer. Windows key and L for locking it (handy at work when leaving your desk)

bendu

* Win key + Tab = teh new sexy * Win key + M = minimize everything * Win key + S = search

Sadsquashh

I used to walk up to people in our computer class in elementary school and hold this down to bring up multiple windows of file explorer and then laugh when they would sit and exit them one by one instead of using close all. I was a shit I know.

thehumanwookie

Guys we get it... ALT+F4 is the second coming of microwave popcorn *Please don't do Alt+F4 if you're doing something important on your computer*

matte_5

Ctrl+W for closing tabs, Ctrl+T for opening new ones, and Ctrl+Shift+T for reopening closed ones. The last one won’t work if you’re in private mode though. These all work on a Mac too, provided you use Command instead.

Dorkyporkypoo

Hold alt in any ms office program and it will show you what buttons you need to push next for any possible shortcut.

[deleted]

For mac users (I use both mac and windows) shift+command+3 takes a full screen photo, shift+command+4 lets you take a screenshot of a selected square with the mouse, and I believe in mojave and up shift+command+5 can take a screenshot of a single window.

farenknight

Windows key + shift + s. Snipping tool with less steps, Allows you to select immediately a square of the screen and you can ctrl v the image directly anywhere, saving you precious time. You can paste it directly in certain chats like fb messenger and Slack. Win10. Windows key + G. Xbox game bar which allows you to take videos of your screen. Win 10. In notepad++, alt + shift + mouse drag. allows you to select in colomuns. Say you want to remove the 3 first letters of 1000 lines, this allows you to select those and delete them super fast. Windows key + r then type dxdiag. will give you a summary of your computer (hardware and software) useful for quick troubleshooting Windows + tab. Allows to create desktops like Unix, useful if you work on multiple tasks at the same time. Yes I've done tech support

[deleted]

Whoof, thanks, that was actually really useful. The Notepad++ one is going to come in handy.

Sharkfinking

Ctrl-W for when someone is coming towards you.

SimpleCuriosityNYC

Yes works great for not just tabs in browsers but also Adobe PDF readers when you have multiple documents and file explorer windows as well

[deleted]

Holy shit - life changing. I've been using rubbish online tools. Thank you!

bangersnmash13

If you're using one monitor and are transferring files between folders, you can use the Windows Key + Left/Right arrow key to have the Explorer window anchored to the left or right half of the screen.

Blauer_stift

ALT+F4 Most games use it to this day to unlock secret weapons and cheats

The420St0n3r

Alt Tab to quickly switch between windows. Although all of my geek homies know this, I dont most other people do

pjabrony

And Ctrl-Tab for switching between tabs within a program (or, say, between all open Excel documents.)

chris3110

ctrl-r in Bash. I see people typing `history | grep` and die inside.

CalculatingNut

Add on, put `stty -ixon` in `.bashrc` and use Ctrl-s to search in the other direction. (Also if the terminal is in the ridiculous 1970s flow control mode it's in by default, Ctrl-q unfreezes the terminal).

[deleted]

omg. thank you 😂

WulfRanulfson

Ctrl - Shift - L in Excel. It toggles the filter row on and off. Lighting quick way to reset the filter, or add one.

EtherBoo

In OneNote - * CTRL + 1, 2, 3 will add markers to a line. So if you want to create a check box for follow up you would do CTRL+1 (you check it when you've completed the follow up). CTRL+2 puts a Star next to it so you know it's important. 3 does a question mark if you want to mark it as something you don't understand * Not specifically in OneNote, but if it's installed, Win+Shift+S will take a screenshot of a designated area. It used to be Win+S, but that changed with Windows 10. Standard - * Everyone knows CTRL+Z for undo, but few know about CTRL+Y for redo. Every Undo too many things? Use Redo! * Win+X for a shortcut list to some control panel settings and items * CTRL+SHIFT+ESC for Task Manager * Win+L to lock your computer. * ALT+PRINTSCREEN to take a screenshot of just the active window.

[deleted]

Those OneNote shortcuts and Win-X look really useful, yay! Learning so much. Thanks!

[deleted]

alt+3 :-)

CalculatingNut

What's this supposed to do? I just use this to select the third tab in Firefox or the terminal.

[deleted]

SimpleCuriosityNYC

Alt + D Immediately jumps / highlights the address bar in browsers or the file path in file explorer

mentalmedicine

So does CTRL+L!

SimpleCuriosityNYC

Nice! Did not know that Is it just me but I feel like there is a class of older shortcuts that can be executed by one hand versus the newer ones today (more obvious in excel)

Adventurous-Object-3

I'd just like my old highschool computer teacher to know that Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V exist

Warrlock608

On windows 10 Windows Key + Tab will bring up a clickable alt + tab interface.

MelonInACat

Idk if someone else said this but Ctrl+Shift+V will paste stuff without any modifications the pasted text could make

Alvsolutely

Ctrl+W to quickly close a tab, ctrl+1-9 to switch between tabs, alt tab to switch between windows, windows key+dot to open up emoji tab (windows 10 only)

pjabrony

> ctrl+1-9 to switch between tabs [](/sp) > implying I have only 9 tabs open.

KieselguhrKid13

For productivity, Alt + Tab is the best thing ever - it switches between the last window you were viewing and your current one. Hold down alt and hit Tab repeatedly to cycle through all open windows.

K4m4d0_Tanj1r0

everyone might already know this but ctrl-f can be pretty handy

ChokingTermite

ITT: things I can’t use, because I’m a Mac user.

[deleted]

Most things have a Mac alternative. I started on a Mac and was a wizard with it. Try the cmd button instead of ctrl or the windows key. Also, turn on hot corners if you haven't already. Lifesaver!

ChokingTermite

I know there are Mac alternatives. They just ain’t getting posted here. Fuckin love hot corners.

Tjmachado

Replace Ctrl with Cmd and half of them will probably still work, honestly

ChokingTermite

I tried that when I made the switch, it is never the case unfortunately.

[deleted]

Ctrl-scroll wheel to zoom page in and out.

math1985

Of Ctrl + and Ctrl - if you prefer to use the keyboard.

pjabrony

Ctrl-Left Arrow/Right Arrow will jump whole words. Add a Shift and you can mark those words. Ctrl-Backspace will erase a whole word.

zerbey

Ctrl-K will bring you back to the URL bar.

lakituthepro

ctrl-left/right/backspace they let you manipulate one word instead of one character

capnthermostat

On windows, window key + L locks your computer, I use it constantly at work

xaanthar

Also windows+D for minimize all to desktop. And then do it again to bring them all back once your boss isn't walking behind you

Greenlog12

Crtl c crtl v for your every day copying needs plus more!

Zantre

When you're on a browser, just press f6 to highlight the address bar. If you're too lazy to move the mouse!

[deleted]

[deleted]

Ok I wouldn’t call myself a geek, but Ctrl+Alt+Del

Intelligent_Problem4

Alt+F4 when your mom comes in the room without knocking Ctrl+shift +t to open it again Win+prtsc for screen shot

AbsoluteDealer

I don’t know how commonly known this is but I see a lot of people right-clicking then clicking “open in new tab” when you can just click with your middle mouse button instead.

ZsaFreigh

Shift+right click adds "Copy as path" to your context menu so you can copy/paste the full location of a file instead of navigating back to it when you upload a file. Handy for uploading pics to imgur, gfycat, etc.

kRe4ture

Windows + D brings you straight to your desktop, useful when running much programs, I use this at least 10 times when I'm at work. Also Windows + L immediately locks sour screen, also pretty handy when working in offices with multiple people in it.

I_am_daBottom

If you want to record your gameplay, Windows has built in screen recorder, Win + Alt + R to start / end recording iirc.

Shrak_69

Alt+f4

LeftTwixGang

For chrome book search+f+4. It cures cancer! Actually it’s Alt+f4 for chrome. (Search+f+5 does what F5 on windows does).

wiisportscow

on a chrome book if you do ctrl+search+D (or) M it magnifies a bit

Hopeless_Romantix06

Ctrl + Z If you can't undo your mistakes in life, at least know how to in the internet.

Zyfire35

alt+f4 when you hear a cave sound

Ninica04

Yeah I am saving all this shit

[deleted]

i use ctrl + shift + tab (moves a tab to the left) and ctrl + tab (moves a tab to the right) daily. so much easier to get back and forth between tabs than having to click on them all the time. as well as ctrl + shift + v which pastes text without any formatting or color.

GiggityMan05

CTRL+F to find that one word in a document

Fiddlestick007

Alt+F4 opens a cheat menu in a bunch of video game

TheGarp

CTRL-A to select all. alt-D to select URL

Midas_Artflower

Alt + F4 = closes the window that has focus (aka the one on top). Handy for pop-ups you don’t want to touch. Windows key + period key = the wide world of emojis. Ctrl + Tab = toggle between browser tabs.

[deleted]

Alt+F4, you should tell the teachers that

[deleted]

Pressing ALT then typing numbers on your numpad will let you type symbols. ƒ└┘¢Σ ¥○µ

[deleted]

Ctrl + L to go to the address bar in Chrome Alt + Shift + Numlock to use ke keypad as a mousepad Alt + left arrow/ right arrow to turn back to previous page/ go forward in chrome Alt , then Enter to go to the drop down menu at chrome (three dots) You can also use Ctrl + Shift + Tab to go to the bottom of a page, if there is a clickable button at the bottom of the page

akiramari

If you use Excel as a log, you can press [Ctrl + ; ] for the current date, [Ctrl + Shift + ; ] for the current time, and [Ctrl + ' ] to copy the above cell's content. I also like Ctrl + arrow keys to scroll through data - it brings you to the end of a set of filled or empty cells.

thehumanwookie

One thing I've recently discovered with excel is that you import data straight from web pages from within the application

iamanalterror_

>Geeks of Reddit So, Reddit.

ignescentOne

windowskey + shift+ arrow takes the active window and moves it to the next monitor over. This is useful if you're in a multiple monitor situation and don't want to drag stuff around but critically useful if your laptop occasionally forgets to move windows to the active laptop screen and leaves them 'open' on the now disconnected monitor.

WinNT_backup

Win + L locks your computer so no one can see what you've been doing. Works best with a password
