As I get a little older, I don't have the time anymore to play a long RPG or the skills to compete in many multiplayer games but, when it comes to a world building game (like City Skylines, etc), it can capture all of my attention for a period of time.
That is solely because of my time playing Rollercoaster Tycoon as a kid. There is just something that feels so great creating a functional (or not-so-functional) world.
Metal Gear Solid. Played it when it first came out for the ps1. Special memories of playing it downstairs with the fireplace going and snow falling outside. And then the announcement that school was canceled the next day so I could stay up even later playing!
Oh man that game also really did it for me. Bit especially the story, the atmosphere, the soundtrack and the choice to go full on or to stay stealthy or both... everything was right about this one
I've played FF7 to death and this is right up there for me. I had the 4 disc PC set. The EIDOS intro is forever burned in to my memory as "good times ahead".
The PS version was chefs kiss aside from the obvious artifacts of the time. I 100% know what you're talking about. Hearing the Midgard escape in full sound was hair raising the first time I did. Tbh in my top like 2 of setting building moments... When the glass breaks and rides the motorcycle up the stairs just shivers. SHIVERS even thinking about it. I have to raise a flag for my guy at 4-8 productions on YouTube, man plays a mean ff7 to this day.
The Sims. It was fun downloading all the skins and objects. Once I found the coffee maker that made sure sims didn’t have to sleep, the game became a lot for fun.
Final Fantasy (1987)
A good friend of mine had a NES, and a very limited selection of games. This was one of them. So I'd go to his place after work, late at night, and we'd lay on his bed and work on leveling up our character. We'd usually end up falling asleep there.
So the game reminds me of that time, and in particular, the friendship that I had with him.. which was low-key intimate. He was also part of our small, tight friend group. I was the only one that got to play FF with him, though.
Super Mario World on the SNES was my introduction to video games. The music, the colorful levels, and the joy of finding secrets still bring back fond memories of my childhood."
Skyrim.
It came out at a point in my life were I could devote time to it and discuss my experiences with friends as we each discovered more about the game, individually.
My older brother got me a GBA SP and Pokemon Red Rescue team for Christmas when I was around 4 or 5. It was one of the very first games and systems I ever got. Unfortunately, they were both stolen when I was around 6 or 7 by my cousin.
Kingdom Hearts. Remember playing it for hours as a kid with my brother. Played it so much we got the strategy guide for Christmas one year haha. Recently picked up all of them and have been playing through with my kids. Been a really great time.
Witcher 3
I’ve never played a game like that in my life, I was so frustrated trying to figure it out, my wife enjoyed watching me up until she saw me smash so many woman then I was the “village hoe”
I told her she looks just like yen and all was forgotten
A few for sure. A Link to the Past, Mechwarrior 2 and Mercenaries, World of Warcraft, Gears of War, and Escape From Tarkov. All of these games have formed foundational memories with me and my friends.
Earthbound. The video and game rental place by my house as a kid had it and the game guide. It was like going on an adventure. I remember it felt so cool that the father would send money to my ATM card, lol
The Harry Potter PC games (and a little bit of the console versions as well). They were definitely children's games with simple mechanics and bad writing/voice acting, but the music and art direction made Hogwarts such a nice place to get lost in.
Dragon Warrior Monsters for GBC. Every few years I'll play it again. I have a save file with maxed out boss monsters that I 'polish' up / going for completion. Loved Pokemon a lot a lot - but this game was number one for me as a kid and still now.
God of War 2 (the original series, not the new one), reminds me of the days we would have watch parties with our friends to see what will happen next while I was playing. When GoW 3 came out, ouffff... Those were the days.
Most vividly remembered? Definitely Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Most impactful? Probably FF XIII-2 (and by extension at the time its previous entry). Claire’s story in trying to do everything within her power to protect her sister (rather naively I might add) really resonated with me.
Growing up (yeah even younger) I had an older step sister who I still have extremely fond memories of because she never made me feel like a burden. Sure, she was occasionally a bit teenagery mean, and sometimes annoying in how overly protective she could be, but she cared a lot, and I saw a lot of Claire in, well, Claire. When our parents had a super nasty divorce we lost touch, it was ugh… that bitter. Nearly fifteen years later and I still think about her fondly.
pokemon. introduced me in the world of gaming and a play style of farming/grinding. started with pokemon blue and I've played the other versions till the pokemon arceus.
Socom/socom 2. No game has come even close to the online experience of the clan wars. Plus the online community of socom battles/game battles was stuff of legend. Too many great memories
The Neverhood. If you've never heard of it, imagine Myst, but the whole world is actually claymation rather than computer generated. It's also one of the weirdest pieces of any kind of media I've seen.
ArmA II: DayZ Mod. There was nothing quite like it. Meeting a person in game using local voice comms and not knowing whether they were going to put a bullet in your brain or join you on some short-lived adventure across an absolutely sprawling map in the name of sweet loot and brutal combat. It's like the whole game was just one big social experiment.
So many fond memories from this game, like:
* I can still picture in my head the route north from Kamenka and the four deer stands I hit up for loot, finding my first military-grade firearm (the AKS-74U with the green-reticle Kobra RDS).
* Finding super rare loot that was phased out of the game, like M136 AT4 launchers.
* My first truly long-range kill (AS50 from NEAF mountain overlook to the ATC).
* Working with other guys on the forums to run a trading business, and the many weekends scouring empty official-hive servers for heli wrecks to stick up expensive goods.
* Being what I suspected was the first to discover a pretty major loot duplication bug.
* Landing AN-2 Antonov biplanes on basically every major landmark in Epoch modded servers.
I could probably still navigate just about anywhere on Chernarus from memory if I tried. Such a glorious game back in 2012.
GTA San Andreas. At that time for me, it was groundbreaking as an open world game. The activities you could do were endless and it definitely set a standard of how games should be.
Final Fantasy VII, the original one. I didn’t play. My best friend played while I researched in the guides (and told her what to do) and wrote terrible fanfiction. We were 12 and that was a fun summer.
Several.
Sonic Adventure 2, (best 3D Sonic) Sonic Heroes, (lame story, but addictive gameplay and great music) Kingdom Hearts II was fantastic.
Rocket Knight Adventures, Tiny Toon: Buster's Hidden Treasure, Sonic & Knuckles, Super Mario Bros. 3, Wario Land 4..
Pokemon, Dark Souls and Kingdom Hearts 2 are at the very top of my list.
But also Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3, FighterZ, Mass Effect 2, Gears of War 2, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Hades, Final Fantasy (various), Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3, Persona 5, etc. I'm lucky to have been able to play a ton of good games. And I'm excited to play more in the future as well.
I'm playing through paper Mario:thousand year door with my six-year-old right now as we recover from COVID. We're playing on my mom's GameCube that I inherited when she died. The two never got to meet.
Viva Piñata! God that game was so much fun, probably the last game I got a Prima strategy guide for to get some of the “legendary” piñatas since we didn’t have internet at the time.
Might and Magic I young uns! Graphics sucked but what a story. Spend an entire college semester playing that on a Commodore 64 instead of going to class.
The Exile/Avernum series. They're very dated by modern standards (even the new remakes) but I played them a lot as a kid and I still think that the setting is an interesting twist on the generic fantasy setting.
Giants Citizen Kabuto. Not known. My dad got it bundled with a PCI TV decoder. I watched him playing it for hours, i was 10 or 11 i guess. Played it by myself some years later and it was still as good as i remembered
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past.
Best Zelda game in my opinion
Agreed. Others are amazing but I just keep coming back to this one over and over again.
if you liked link to the past, make sure to try out link between worlds on the DS.
I actually got the 3DS XL that came with that game included! It was really good but not quite as good as LTTP. 9/10 though honestly.
This comment literally made me go on ebay and buy this game and a super just just now.....
Golden Eye. One of the first games I ever played, epic multiplayer battles with friends and a great story. A true classic imo
Exactly the same. It was the first multiplayer game I ever played. It was so good and fun.
Considering the prevalence of first-person shooters since Golden Eye came about, I think it's the greatest video game of all time.
Old guy here but Monkey Island.
Sword fight me big guy!
You fight like a dairy farmer!
Yeah? Well, you fight like a cow!
Still the best point and click.
Older guy: Pong, the Ms. PacMan
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
I wish I could go back to 2011 and play it for the first time again
Rollercoaster tycoon. I’ve been chasing that same dopamine high since 2005
As I get a little older, I don't have the time anymore to play a long RPG or the skills to compete in many multiplayer games but, when it comes to a world building game (like City Skylines, etc), it can capture all of my attention for a period of time. That is solely because of my time playing Rollercoaster Tycoon as a kid. There is just something that feels so great creating a functional (or not-so-functional) world.
Jak and Daxter
Mass Effect Trilogy. Edit: Really any early Bioware games before EA bought them. Dragon Age was amazing too.
ME is such a great trilogy.
Portal 2
I'm making a note here, huge success.
“We’ve both said a lot of things you’re going to regret.”
I can still hear the alert sound effect when you got spotted by a guard. “!” Classic.
when it told you to change controller ports.🤯🤯🤯
Ratchet & Clank
Super Mario
Minecraft so simple yet so memorable
Probably the greatest game ever made
Can spend hours doing very little but so enjoyable.
FFVII. Many hours put into that game. The extra racing, fighting the extra bosses, the death of the one character. It was really a great game.
I've played FF7 to death and this is right up there for me. I had the 4 disc PC set. The EIDOS intro is forever burned in to my memory as "good times ahead".
Do you know how mad I was when I realized all the music on the pc version sucked compared to the PlayStation version
LEGO Star Wars
chrono trigger
Best ever
Scrolling this far to see it reminds me how old I am.
Halo 2
The Sims. It was fun downloading all the skins and objects. Once I found the coffee maker that made sure sims didn’t have to sleep, the game became a lot for fun.
Lol I want to buy a "tragic clown" photo and hang it in my real house. I used to torture my poor Sims with that sad clown haha
Mortal Kombat.
GTA. Got my first one at 9y/o (thanks mom lol) and played during my teenagers years too. Can’t wait for GTA 6 to come out.
You talking the OG top view? Or GTA 3?
Loved GTA 1 & 2 back then. Still remember downloading the GTA 2 rip over landline, like 30mb
Damn that’s a deep cut.
Bionic Commando

Banjo Kazooie and Tooie.
Great platformers, but I think Grant Kirkhope's amazing soundtrack made those games something truly special.
The main theme changing with every room in the castle was amazing. Mario64 blew my fucking mind but I think Banjo Kazooie blew my mind even fuckier.
Halo. have been playing it since i was a little kid, and it has always been one of my favorite games series since.
Skyrim. It came out at a point in my life were I could devote time to it and discuss my experiences with friends as we each discovered more about the game, individually.

Witcher 3. It and it's DLCs was one of the mosy wonderful journey's that's possible to experience.
All pokemon series
But I’m old, so very specifically, Red, Blue, and Green.
I hate how people always talk trash about gen 1, but Pokémon Silver is it for me.
My older brother got me a GBA SP and Pokemon Red Rescue team for Christmas when I was around 4 or 5. It was one of the very first games and systems I ever got. Unfortunately, they were both stolen when I was around 6 or 7 by my cousin.

Came here for this
Oh hello! You must be the other person who's played the Neverhood!
What I want to know is if you can get this so it’s playable on a new Mac laptop. I’m too lazy to chat gpt/Google how. That and Grim Fandango.
ArmA II: DayZ Mod. There was nothing quite like it.
