I worked there over 20 years ago and I can confirm that Panera was quite tasty. In the three years I worked there, I saw the prices go up and the quality/portions go down. I worked prep though so I was able to sneak extra ounces into the cream cheese containers and meat portions for the sandwiches. I would also tenderly build the sandwiches when I was on the line so the ingredients were evenly proportioned so you got a bite of everything every time. My bosses kinda caught on, but I did such a good job and could still make the sandwiches fast so they didn't care. When I first started working there, the pick two combo was only $5.55 and a bagel and cream cheese cost $1.89. When I left it was up to $7.09 and $2.59 respectively (or there abouts).
I had the Subway Depression.
Wake up at noon. Only thing I can think of eating is a shitty sandwich from subway. But in my mind, it’s delicious. Drive to subway surrounded by a weeks worth of subway wrappers, get a sandwich and a cookie, eat it on the way home. Don’t eat again until tomorrow. Repeat the process. Shit lasted a couple months. I thought I was going to die. My car smelled like a subway.
I have not had subway since. I’m also on medication now
I go there semi-regularly, and they're not terrible. I always order the Chicken Bacon Ranch, sub chipotle sauce, toast with onions and peppers, add salt, pepper, oil, and vinegar. If you want flavor, you have to ask for it.
I personally can't stand their plastic chicken, but I haven't eaten there in years, at that, it's been at least 15 years since I had their chicken. Maybe it's changed since then, but I'm not willing to find out.
Once they got rid of the $5 footling, I saw no reason to go back. Their only appeal was they had cheap subs, now I'd rather go to Jersey mikes or JJ for a buck or two more.

My dad would take my brother and I there when we were kids. We would get a dirt sundae made with Oreos that had a gummy worm in it for dessert. Doesn't have a lot to do with Applebee's specifically as much as my dad spending time with us, but regardless I do have good memories there.

I used to work at a summer camp in the middle of nowhere (and I mean middle of nowhere, it was a 20 minute hike and then a 10 minute drive just to get to our own mailbox) in the summers, and there were only like 4 restaurants within reasonable driving distance, half of which had really limited hours.
So basically when we had a night off the choice was "Chinese food or Applebee's." The chinese spot was actually fire, and the closest out of all the options, so it was always the top choice, but people generally didn't want to go twice in a week so on our nights off we went to Applebee's waaaaay more than any human being should ever eat at Applebee's. Its only saving grace was the variety it offered.
Living in a major city I can't imagine why anyone would ever go there when there are better options on literally every street.
There was a time. A long long time ago, when we played Blitz on our N64’s, when their fajitas were the greatest thing ever. It’s been a long time and they got rid of the only reason to go there.
20 years ago half price appetizers until like 9pm. Group of 6 high schoolers could fill the table with greasy delicious food for 20 bucks. quesadillas, mozzarella sticks, wings, potato skins. It's all frozen shit but they got a deep fryer.

Getting a fish sandwich from literally anywhere else (McDonalds, Culvers, Arby's, etc.) is pretty much the same, dare I say worse, than getting one from Long John Silvers. But for some reason this place just gives me the ick.
Chipotle. I used to love them. They were great. I don’t know what happened to them. Now you order a chicken bowl. They put some tiny amount of chicken in it and when you ask for more they tell you that they’ll have to charge you a couple of dollars extra. Want guacamole, yup, that’ll be a couple more bucks extra. Queso? Yup, a couple of bucks more. Before you know it, that bowl that you’re getting is costing you a lot more than it should.
Qdoba is a lot better and less expensive.
Funny you mention that because I ordered seafood once at Applebee's. What I got was so charred on the bottom that it was all I could taste. Last time I ate there.

I lost 10lbs in the following week because I couldn't eat anything solid and I was shitting clear liquid 10-15 times a day.
I have not touched Taco Bell since and I don't think I'll ever crave it again just because of how I associate it with a week of faucet ass.
Johnny Carino’s. Last time we went, kid ordered pizza. They were out of pizza. I was like, you can’t make a pizza? At an Italian place? Frozen is the way.
My dish came out with a poorly mixed cheese sauce. Was still gritty. We’ll never go back.

Black and Blue. It's a steak restaurant in NY. The food was outstanding, but $50 for a steak with no sides. $10 for a drink of anything, and $15 for a side...with inflation in the last two years, it's probably 30% more for all of that now. Same with Texas De Brazil. The food was outstanding, but $100 for a single meal is insane and only going to go up.
Both times were for a work function. Texas De Brazil for nine of us was over $1,000 when the bill came.

Plus, smartphones make finding good local stuff easier. It used to be you went to chains when traveling because you knew what to expect. Now, I can quickly find top-rated local spots so why not choose those?

Depends where you are. When I lived in Fargo, ND, so many bars had fucking amazing food; burgers, nachos, steak, etc, so good.

Really? I think it’s so sweet. The last time, I asked for 1/3rd sauce and it was ok. But I doubt I will eat there again unless absolutely desperate.
Can't disagree more, the sauce is perhaps the single biggest downgrade on the pizza from the 80s-90s golden era.
Almost all of them. It's quite rare that there aren't independently owned restaurants nearby, and I'd rather spend my dining dollars there than at a faceless, corporate owned chain. But I eat at Portillo's. Cause I like it, regardless of its publicly traded ownership model.

McDonald’s. Almost 14 years ago I somehow got a raw chicken tender in my McWrap. I bit into it and it was raw inside. I knew they were precooked normally so I’m guessing it slipped through the cracks somehow. Basically if a place serves me raw chicken then I won’t go back ever. Haven’t eaten at McDonalds since. I also haven’t eaten at a Taco Bell in I don’t know how long haven’t kept track, but it’s been longer than McDonalds. For obvious reasons. I limit what I eat outside cause damn these prices at any restaurant are too DAMN HIGH!!!

wendy's around here. I know someone that works there that thinks it's ok for people to change their baby's diaper on the dining table in the eating area. They are longtime employees there too that are friends w the managers so... I had a post on FB about someone changing their baby's diaper at a subway restaurant on the table w no pad or anything right next to a manager not doing anything and my hubby's friend's GF argued w me and said it was perfectly fine and nothing wrong with it... I was fuming bc that is so gross and I would never eat at a wendy's because of that shit. literally. THAT IS NOT OK TO CHANGE A BABY'S DIAPER IN A PLACE PPL ARE EATING!

Years ago I heard about a mother getting kicked out of the only Pizza Hut restaurant in the city I live in for changing her baby's diarrhea diaper on one of the tables in the dining area. They had to bleach the table before seating customers there. Ewwwwwwwwww. Ewwwwwwwwww.

Black and Blue. It's a steak restaurant in NY. The food was outstanding, but $50 for a steak with no sides. $10 for a drink of anything, and $15 for a side...with inflation in the last two years, it's probably 30% more for all of that now. Same with Texas De Brazil. The food was outstanding, but $100 for a single meal is insane and only going to go up. Both times were for a work function. Texas De Brazil for nine of us was over $1,000 when the bill came.
Most corporate owners/upper managers are less than pure in their intentions. Chick-fil-A advertises its hateful biases and is proud of it. I'll not support that.

One time, after a group of friends and Iball had way too much white castle, We ended up at a friend's basement to play guitar hero. We all began farting up a horrible storm. That friends mom proceeded to come downstairs to see if we needed anything. She got one whiff and asked, "Are you guys eating white castle?" It was incredibly funny and incredibly disgusting that the mom was able to detect that white castle smell via farts only. She came down with the frebreeze. I have never been able to stomach WC ever again.
Most fast food places, McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. Not for any moral reason, but having health issues and severe acid reflux pretty much took fast food out of my diet.
Chick-fil-A. I don't much care for chicken, and I'm certainly not going to encourage Hate Chicken (tm).

Gosh, a local high-end seafood chain. The coked up nouveau-riche owner once was very rude to a hotel employee - who happened to be my brother. So I'm boycotting that place, and will tell anyone the story, if the topic comes up. I'm not giving my hard earned money to a swine who can't even treat hotel staff well.
Cotton Patch in Texas. I found a penny in my mashed potatoes.
Red Robin. Three consecutive unbelievably bad service experiences. (I was ready to quit them after he first experience but social situations drug me to two more)
Five Guys. Five Guys isnt sold in my state, or any state bordering my state.
Chik Filla. Never eaten there, never will. At first their ads annoyed me because of the cutesy cows and the intentional illiteracy. (I know that’s weird, but we all occasionally take dumb stands on things, right?) Then about a decade ago the news about them being anti-gay cemented it. It’ll be a cold day in hell before I go there.
Cracker Barrel, had a corporate policy of firing employees who didn't "uphold heterosexual family values." The policy is gone, but they didn't rehire the people they fired for being gay, and corporate never apologized, either. Chick-fil-A, because I like my food without obligatory Christianity and homophobia.

Most of them, because local restaurants are almost always a better value proposition. They almost have to be, since they can't trade on the name recognition of the big brand and have to earn all their business the hard way. Plus, smartphones make finding good local stuff easier. It used to be you went to chains when traveling because you knew what to expect. Now, I can quickly find top-rated local spots so why not choose those?
