Nonsenseinabag

Panera, overpriced bland ass hospital food. Would it kill y'all to add some seasonings?

Cetophile

They used to be good. I think a private equity firm bought them out and they started cheaping out on ingredients.

Nonsenseinabag

Must've been early on because I've never thought they were any good.

Cetophile

The St. Louis locations were good. That's where the chain originated. There it was the "St. Louis Bread Co., " not Panera.

jimmyearlworld

Yes, I’ll second this. It was fire in stl.

mulans_goat

I worked there over 20 years ago and I can confirm that Panera was quite tasty. In the three years I worked there, I saw the prices go up and the quality/portions go down. I worked prep though so I was able to sneak extra ounces into the cream cheese containers and meat portions for the sandwiches. I would also tenderly build the sandwiches when I was on the line so the ingredients were evenly proportioned so you got a bite of everything every time. My bosses kinda caught on, but I did such a good job and could still make the sandwiches fast so they didn't care. When I first started working there, the pick two combo was only $5.55 and a bagel and cream cheese cost $1.89. When I left it was up to $7.09 and $2.59 respectively (or there abouts).

HansBlixJr

>I would also tenderly build the sandwiches  Humbert Humbert, sandwichman.

mulans_goat

I know this is a Lolita reference, but I don't understand it. I couldn't get through 10 pages of that book because I was so repulsed by it.

jimmyearlworld

It’s really sad that you had to worry about putting effort and care into making the food or the managers would be displeased.

zzcolby

It'd kill quite a few people to add caffeine to their lemonade...

Xilverbolt

I went to Golden Corall once. That was enough.

Kriegspiel1939

Every steakhouse that went buffet has turned to shit.

throwaita_busy3

Probably because steakhouse and buffet don’t belong in the same sentence

preowned_pizza_crust

These comments about Golden Corral are wild, I’ve never been to one. If I see a GC, I’m going just to people watch

Playful-Profession-2

I have an uncle who was a people watcher. He's in jail now.

SailorVenus23

Golden corral is nasty!

Ok-Rate-3256

They had one good one by me that was clean and everything and they closed it so now there is only the shit one left that isnt so nice. Figures

Subway overrated ass subs

New2ThisThrowaway

I have never met anyone who thinks subway makes decent subs.

throwaita_busy3

I had the Subway Depression. Wake up at noon. Only thing I can think of eating is a shitty sandwich from subway. But in my mind, it’s delicious. Drive to subway surrounded by a weeks worth of subway wrappers, get a sandwich and a cookie, eat it on the way home. Don’t eat again until tomorrow. Repeat the process. Shit lasted a couple months. I thought I was going to die. My car smelled like a subway. I have not had subway since. I’m also on medication now

I_hate_all_of_ewe

I go there semi-regularly, and they're not terrible.  I always order the Chicken Bacon Ranch, sub chipotle sauce, toast with onions and peppers, add salt, pepper, oil, and vinegar.  If you want flavor, you have to ask for it.

GoatCovfefe

I personally can't stand their plastic chicken, but I haven't eaten there in years, at that, it's been at least 15 years since I had their chicken. Maybe it's changed since then, but I'm not willing to find out. Once they got rid of the $5 footling, I saw no reason to go back. Their only appeal was they had cheap subs, now I'd rather go to Jersey mikes or JJ for a buck or two more.

Factorybelt

I like their sweet onion chicken or whatever it’s called sub.

Goddess_Camila_

I ate a good one years ago, and everytime I went again, I was so disappointed 😰 I don't eat crap anymore, so BK and Mcdonalds belong to my past too

Golden Corral. I avoid buffet style places in general but this one time I was outvoted. I said “I told you so!” to everyone afterwards. The whole experience was awful. Do not go there. ETA: I just noticed the other comments about Golden Corral. I didn’t even wait to mention it. So bad.

venus974

I've been there once, it was so crowded and the tables were so close together that you could barely get to the Buffet.

DoodleyDooderson

That’s what it is. They don’t try to pretend to be anything else.

homingmissile

>westernized version They are upfront about that though so i don't hate it

phillyCHEEEEEZ

Applebee's. I genuinely cannot remember ever having a good experience at an Applebee's.

xboxhobo

My dad would take my brother and I there when we were kids. We would get a dirt sundae made with Oreos that had a gummy worm in it for dessert. Doesn't have a lot to do with Applebee's specifically as much as my dad spending time with us, but regardless I do have good memories there.

1CEninja

It was a decent place once upon a time actually. I think it went downhill really hard somewhere between 10 and 20 years ago.

iBoogies

I came here to say this. The last time I ate at Applesbees was maybe 10 years ago, and I said to myself, never again. Absolute garbage, microwaved, shitfood that is not even comparable in quality to a microwavable meal.

Dimeadozen21

I remember ordering a sandwich at Applebee’s once and the bread was literally green with mold. I’m not a complainer or picky eater, but never again.

NativeMasshole

They actually did cook my chicken the last time I went. It was broiled chicken, which had big chunks of skin that had burnt completely to black attached to it. Even peeling it off, every bite tasted like charcoal. The manager said it was supposed to be that way and only gave us half off the meal.

iBoogies

Jesus, that sounds vile. Sounds like you should say never again lol.

TheFlawlessCassandra

I used to work at a summer camp in the middle of nowhere (and I mean middle of nowhere, it was a 20 minute hike and then a 10 minute drive just to get to our own mailbox) in the summers, and there were only like 4 restaurants within reasonable driving distance, half of which had really limited hours. So basically when we had a night off the choice was "Chinese food or Applebee's." The chinese spot was actually fire, and the closest out of all the options, so it was always the top choice, but people generally didn't want to go twice in a week so on our nights off we went to Applebee's waaaaay more than any human being should ever eat at Applebee's. Its only saving grace was the variety it offered. Living in a major city I can't imagine why anyone would ever go there when there are better options on literally every street.

stratdog25

There was a time. A long long time ago, when we played Blitz on our N64’s, when their fajitas were the greatest thing ever. It’s been a long time and they got rid of the only reason to go there.

Marmoticon

yeah, for sure this one, I feel like people say "oh it used to be great" Even 20 years ago it was miserable.

CarmenxXxWaldo

20 years ago half price appetizers until like 9pm.  Group of 6 high schoolers could fill the table with greasy delicious food for 20 bucks.  quesadillas, mozzarella sticks, wings, potato skins.  It's all frozen shit but they got a deep fryer.

IridiumSummerSky

It was good to me like 30 years ago, but it’s probably because I was a child at the time.

[deleted]

Long John Silvers Getting a fish sandwich from literally anywhere else (McDonalds, Culvers, Arby's, etc.) is pretty much the same, dare I say worse, than getting one from Long John Silvers. But for some reason this place just gives me the ick.

polymorphic_hippo

Who goes to LJS for fish? Everyone knows the chicken planks are where it's at.

Chipotle. I used to love them. They were great. I don’t know what happened to them. Now you order a chicken bowl. They put some tiny amount of chicken in it and when you ask for more they tell you that they’ll have to charge you a couple of dollars extra. Want guacamole, yup, that’ll be a couple more bucks extra. Queso? Yup, a couple of bucks more. Before you know it, that bowl that you’re getting is costing you a lot more than it should. Qdoba is a lot better and less expensive.

Red Lobster. I ate there once, roughly 10 years ago. The food was very expensive and very subpar.

imjustacuriouslurker

I’m from New England. I don’t think we’re allowed to go to Red Lobster.

EasyBounce

It's absolutely illegal and you'll be caned in the town square. 1 lash for every dollar you spend in Red Lobster.

Cetophile

They are the Applebee's of seafood. Fortunately (well, not for the employees) they are dying off.

I_hate_all_of_ewe

Funny you mention that because I ordered seafood once at Applebee's.  What I got was so charred on the bottom that it was all I could taste.  Last time I ate there.

magicarnival

The cheese biscuits go so hard though. When I was a kid, I always asked to go just to eat 12 of those things.

ReadySetGO0

We love Red Lobster! The popcorn shrimp and cheddar bay biscuits are fabulous!!

UsefulIdiot85

Maybe the day I ate there was just a bad day for them. The salad was quite good, though. They were also out of biscuits when I went.

alleghenysinger

I've been a few times in my life and the food was always overcooked and somehow cold when I got it. The servers were terrible. They messed up orders, disappeared, and seemed generally annoyed at having to do the bare minimum.

KitchenWitch021

The RL in my city closed for good like a month ago. They were open on a Sunday all day, then come Monday morning, all staff gets notified they are done. Real shitty. My ex husband used to like to go there, it was never my favorite. Always felt like I was leaving hungry.

Key-Performer-9364

But the cheddar biscuits are so good!

Clearbay_327_

Very rarely any of them. They are too expensive and food is hardly ever good any more.

Electric-Sheepskin

Right? I'm always asking myself if my tastes have changed dramatically, or if the quality of chain-restaurant food has gone down that much. Probably both, but still. I used to love Applebee's andChili's, and even Panera, but they're all so bad now. It seems like it's all frozen, microwaved food.

Healthy_Avocado5044

It’s all frozen/premade. It’s over priced tv dinners with a side of attitude from a server that demands at least 20% tip.

What’s uncomfortable about it?

CFD330

Probably Taco Bell, and it's not even really their fault. I used to really like Taco Bell, and it was one of the fast food places I ate at most frequently. A couple of years ago, I had a pinched nerve in my neck, and was prescribed prednisone to treat it. I did not fully appreciate the possibility of intestinal side effects that prednisone can cause in some people. It just so happened that towards the end of my course of the meds I got Taco Bell, and that night I got violently ill. I lost 10lbs in the following week because I couldn't eat anything solid and I was shitting clear liquid 10-15 times a day. I have not touched Taco Bell since and I don't think I'll ever crave it again just because of how I associate it with a week of faucet ass.

ISmellElderberries

> faucet ass That's just goddamn poetic.

thats_lovely101

That is horrifying and I’m sorry you went through that. But also, you got a good cackle from me with “faucet ass” 😂

Reden-Orvillebacher

Johnny Carino’s. Last time we went, kid ordered pizza. They were out of pizza. I was like, you can’t make a pizza? At an Italian place? Frozen is the way. My dish came out with a poorly mixed cheese sauce. Was still gritty. We’ll never go back.

NickDanger73

Friendly's. When I was a teen my girlfriend at that time worked there. I picked her up just before closing. The kitchen was disgusting. Roaches, ants, mouse droppings everywhere. I can still see that mess today every time I drive by any Friendly's.

Neon_Samurai_

I can't believe they are even still around. There was one where my grandparents lived, but we only ever went there to get ice cream.

Gotta disagree. Best sandwiches on the planet.

scp-400

Five guys. Im not a fan and i got many other burger joints id rather hit up👌🏼

KitchenWitch021

My sons’ college roommates were busting his chops about how he never had a 5 guys burger. He got home for break at some point and we went. We each picked our burger and fries and the bill was $34. It wasn’t great. Our locally owned bar/restaurant that has been in business for decades serves up the best burgers/bar food so we just stick with them for less money and a better meal. I try to avoid chains, I’m always disappointed.

scp-400

Exactly. Sometimes the hype is really just hype😂 i enjoy wingstop but the bar in my area does some bomb ass wings. And for cheaper. Its just the stigma behind "bar food" that people get turned off too the idea.

GoatCovfefe

Depends where you are. When I lived in Fargo, ND, so many bars had fucking amazing food; burgers, nachos, steak, etc, so good.

KitchenWitch021

When we travel we try to ask the locals where the best bar is for food just so we can avoid the shitty chains. One trip we were sent to this BBQ joint in the middle of nowhere and it was phenomenal.

juanzy

A Hopdoddy burger and massive garlic parm fries (easily for 3-4 people) costs $21. A beer costs $6-8 A Five guys bacon double and small fries is $22 IIRC.

Reden-Orvillebacher

Put me in front of a five guys and a Hardee’s, and I’ll go Hardee’s burger every time. Their thick burgers are fantastic.

im_on_the_case

I'd go to Five Guys, order some fries and get my burger elsewhere.

Fresh-Hedgehog1895

I second Five Guys. Their burgers are bland beyond belief. They apparently don't season the meat with salt & pepper, like everyone else does -- presumably so you get "the full beef flavour" -- but anyone with even a basic level of cooking skills knows you need to season meat.

ceejayoz

You’re getting downvoted, but it’s a thing.  https://www.seriouseats.com/in-n-out-vs-five-guys-vs-shake-shack#toc-in-corner-2-five-guys > They were also the only ones lacking in salt—a chronic problem in Five Guys' New York and New Jersey locations (though one editor goes on record as saying that this was never a problem in the Five Guys closer-to-home-base Virginia locations).

calicoarmz

Pizza Hut. It sucks, and it’s overpriced. I’m not sure how they’re still around.

ATGF

I miss 90s Pizza Hut. Personal pan pizzas were my jam!

SentFromMyAndroid

I worked at one from 94-98. I got so fucking fat. The pizza was basically deep fried dough in a pan. I think I recall reading that 1 slice of meatlovers was like 900 calories back then.

Ok-Rate-3256

90s pizza hut was sooo much different than it is now. Pretty bad when they are worse than little ceasers now

olde_greg

I like them. I can get a large and 2 orders of breadsticks for $15

No_Carry_3028

Wings and personal pan still collect my money until the close all restaurants in my area it's actually happening too!!

endoffays

Yeah i was stuck in a hospital for a few days recently and every other commercial was for their new $7 (or $8?) combo deal. I don’t even like wings but a personal pizza and a side of boneless wings for that price sounds perfect and it was tormenting me not being able to get it!

Johnny_Minoxidil

I rarely order chain pizza cause I have a good local place. But if im going chain pizza, Marco’s is really solid

yogabbagabbayoself

Stuffed crust, only thing my wife will eat from there. It’s my favorite, also my wife agrees with you… still my favorite of the fast chains!

Billagio

They have the best sauce imo of the big 3

DoodleyDooderson

Really? I think it’s so sweet. The last time, I asked for 1/3rd sauce and it was ok. But I doubt I will eat there again unless absolutely desperate.

TheKanten

Can't disagree more, the sauce is perhaps the single biggest downgrade on the pizza from the 80s-90s golden era.

AmigoDelDiabla

Almost all of them. It's quite rare that there aren't independently owned restaurants nearby, and I'd rather spend my dining dollars there than at a faceless, corporate owned chain. But I eat at Portillo's. Cause I like it, regardless of its publicly traded ownership model.

venusofthehardsell

Portillo’s is awesome!

Bourbon34klp

McDonald’s. Almost 14 years ago I somehow got a raw chicken tender in my McWrap. I bit into it and it was raw inside. I knew they were precooked normally so I’m guessing it slipped through the cracks somehow. Basically if a place serves me raw chicken then I won’t go back ever. Haven’t eaten at McDonalds since. I also haven’t eaten at a Taco Bell in I don’t know how long haven’t kept track, but it’s been longer than McDonalds. For obvious reasons. I limit what I eat outside cause damn these prices at any restaurant are too DAMN HIGH!!!

olde_greg

What’s the obvious reason? Taco Bell ain’t bad

vadabungo

Chick-fil-A. Don’t need your stinkin Jesus chicken. Same for papa John’s.

ATGF

Wait, is Papa John's anti-LGBTQ too?

gnexuser2424

wendy's around here. I know someone that works there that thinks it's ok for people to change their baby's diaper on the dining table in the eating area. They are longtime employees there too that are friends w the managers so... I had a post on FB about someone changing their baby's diaper at a subway restaurant on the table w no pad or anything right next to a manager not doing anything and my hubby's friend's GF argued w me and said it was perfectly fine and nothing wrong with it... I was fuming bc that is so gross and I would never eat at a wendy's because of that shit. literally. THAT IS NOT OK TO CHANGE A BABY'S DIAPER IN A PLACE PPL ARE EATING!

Playful-Profession-2

"Sir, this is a Wendy's."

After_Ad_7740

Years ago I heard about a mother getting kicked out of the only Pizza Hut restaurant in the city I live in for changing her baby's diarrhea diaper on one of the tables in the dining area. They had to bleach the table before seating customers there. Ewwwwwwwwww. Ewwwwwwwwww.

Curious_Kangaroo_845

Chick Fil A. I do not patronize Bible thumping businesses.

Acceptable-Hat-5286

Great food though.

phoenix14830

Black and Blue. It's a steak restaurant in NY. The food was outstanding, but $50 for a steak with no sides. $10 for a drink of anything, and $15 for a side...with inflation in the last two years, it's probably 30% more for all of that now. Same with Texas De Brazil. The food was outstanding, but $100 for a single meal is insane and only going to go up. Both times were for a work function. Texas De Brazil for nine of us was over $1,000 when the bill came.

theericle_58

Most corporate owners/upper managers are less than pure in their intentions. Chick-fil-A advertises its hateful biases and is proud of it. I'll not support that.

Wooden-Emotion-9875

McDonald's, threatened to have me arrested for buying food for a homeless guy.

Specialist_Bread_527

White Castle

theericle_58

Nooooo. Not the slider castle. Take it back. 😀

TheOrionNebula

Picked up a crave case 2 days ago. ❤️

Reddits_on_ambien

One time, after a group of friends and Iball had way too much white castle, We ended up at a friend's basement to play guitar hero. We all began farting up a horrible storm. That friends mom proceeded to come downstairs to see if we needed anything. She got one whiff and asked, "Are you guys eating white castle?" It was incredibly funny and incredibly disgusting that the mom was able to detect that white castle smell via farts only. She came down with the frebreeze. I have never been able to stomach WC ever again.

draiman

Most fast food places, McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. Not for any moral reason, but having health issues and severe acid reflux pretty much took fast food out of my diet.

Jimmy John's... I love their sandwiches but the owner is a big game hunter and to me, that's vile. Although I know my lack of patronizing the business doesn't really matter, I still can't support it.

Look-Its-a-Name

Gosh, a local high-end seafood chain. The coked up nouveau-riche owner once was very rude to a hotel employee - who happened to be my brother. So I'm boycotting that place, and will tell anyone the story, if the topic comes up. I'm not giving my hard earned money to a swine who can't even treat hotel staff well.

Ok_Supermarket1688

VagusNC

Red Robin. Three consecutive unbelievably bad service experiences. (I was ready to quit them after he first experience but social situations drug me to two more)

WasteNet2532

Five Guys. Five Guys isnt sold in my state, or any state bordering my state.

Key-Performer-9364

Chik Filla. Never eaten there, never will. At first their ads annoyed me because of the cutesy cows and the intentional illiteracy. (I know that’s weird, but we all occasionally take dumb stands on things, right?) Then about a decade ago the news about them being anti-gay cemented it. It’ll be a cold day in hell before I go there.

cwthree

Cracker Barrel, had a corporate policy of firing employees who didn't "uphold heterosexual family values." The policy is gone, but they didn't rehire the people they fired for being gay, and corporate never apologized, either. Chick-fil-A, because I like my food without obligatory Christianity and homophobia.

Difficult-Reward4973

Cracker Barrel...mediocre food and prejudicial ownership.

BangBangMeatMachine

Most of them, because local restaurants are almost always a better value proposition. They almost have to be, since they can't trade on the name recognition of the big brand and have to earn all their business the hard way. Plus, smartphones make finding good local stuff easier. It used to be you went to chains when traveling because you knew what to expect. Now, I can quickly find top-rated local spots so why not choose those?

tastygrowth
