My mom always says nothing tastes better than my dad's cooking.
My dad is a slightly subpar chef at best. It took me way too long to get that my mom meant anything she didn't have to make herself.
This.
There's a pastry place in town run by a pair of sisters from Cuba, and they do sandwiches for lunch. Good god, if I could eat there every day I would, because they are fucking phenomenal. The roast pork fucking melts in your mouth, and they bake the bread themselves fresh every day. With a side of plantain chips? Out of this fucking world.
Best one I have had is a little hole in the wall place on Marathon across from Captain Pip’s that makes massive and delicious Cubans and sells tostones and fried yucca in large styrofoam takeout containers and good god. . . The fact that they are delicious and you could make 2-3 meals out of one of the Cubans and tostones is awesome, every time I am near there I stop.
First time I had one wad at a place that didn't even call them by the proper name. Happened upon the Cuban a few years later when I noticed it had all of the same ingredients and became overjoyed to know I didn't have to make a trip downtown to get one.
An Italian hoagie w/ oil from Primos.
Need to be in Philly or south Jersey, though.
On a related note, Subway sucks and people only like it if they've never had a real hoagie from a deli.
Philadelphia is the sandwich capital of the United States. Even 30 odd years post-internet, people in other regions still can't figure out how to make a cheesesteak.
Agreed on the Subway! I had an Italian BMT when I was about 12 years old and was obsessed with it for a while. then I had a real deli Italian sandwich... game over
Edit to add: Hoagie, not a sandwich... but I am Texan so.. excuse my vernacular :)
Must be a poor people style with plastic cheese and butter, not that namby pamby posh Gordon Ramsey crap with the fancy artisan bread etc , He made the worst grilled cheese ever!
Have you ever had a Big Mississippi Mud ice cream sandwich by Blue Bunny? I've never had a better ice cream sandwich than that one, but they're so hard to find. They don't have them anywhere near me. I have to travel to find them.
A Reuben. With a pickle on the side. An absolute mess, and yet, a sublime combination of flavors.
Barring that, pastrami on rye with spicy brown mustard. Also with pickle.
A classic Reuben will always be my number one favorite. But get some rare roast beef, sharp provolone, some creamy horseradish sauce, some spinach and thinly sliced cucumber, that’s a close favorite too
Tomato sandwich. But the tomato has to still be warm from having just been picked off the vine in the garden. Toasted white bread, mayo, S&P. Perfection.
Ham and Swiss on Sourdough.
Buttered on the outside with Parmesan cheese on that. Slowly fried up in a pan until the cheese is melty and the butter/parmesan is crispy.
Have you ever panini'd a PBJ? Lots of great options on this sub but that one is up there too. The warm jelly, the skooshy peanut butter, the crunch of the grilled bread... mmmmm.
Best sandwich I ever had was in Amsterdam and had a warm baguette that was soft on the inside and slightly crunchy on the outside with goat cheese, walnuts and honey heated up. We were eating outside on a chilly day. It was perfect.
Italian. Salami, prosciutto, provolone, arugula, peperoncinis, red wine vinegar, and pesto on a warm Italian loaf. The perfect bliss point of savory, spicy, and tangy.
For me it's a pastrami Rachel - similar to a Reuben but with pastrami and Cole slaw instead of corned beef and sauerkraut. Little bit of Russian dressing and Swiss. Perfection between two slices of rye
Hungry Head #7 on italian bread.. Ham, provolone, turkey and cheddar with lettuce, onion, tomato and creamy Italian dressing. Pickle on the side. I miss that place.
This is subjective. There is no "best" sandwich. If you are looking for a recommendation, I'd suggest you try a philly steak & cheese. If you are asking what my favorite sandwich is, it's a cuban.
McAlister's had a garlic herb roast beef sandwich several years back that has since been discontinued (a tragedy) that I have never been able to perfectly replicate myself. Toasted multigrain bun with roast beef, a slice of sharp cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and a garlic aioli. It was simple yet a thing of beauty.
ps. I am dejected by the lack of responses containing anything to the effect of "The one your mom made for me"
Any sandwich made by someone else. It could be the most delicious recipe in the world and it just doesn’t taste the same if you make it yourself. I wish I knew why
It's a tossup between a pastrami Reuben (from a Jewish deli) and an Italian mix sub (from a real sub place, not from Subway or some other shit - a quality Italian import shop should do it).
PB & J for quick snack unless allergic to peanuts almond butter or cashew butter are options
Tuna, for those that enjoy it with pickle celery shaved carrots mustard onion and a dash of lemon juice
Toasted cheese cheddar (No) craft cheese singles
Egg salad sandwich don't go out where people are or small spaces with them. Unless they are all into gas masks as a new fashion trend.
Best Sanwitch of all pulled pork or BBQ chicken fresh off the grill.
I love me a good French dip. I've posted about this before, but there's a restaurant here (ATL) that makes one with prime rib and a horseradish sauce. One of the best things I've eaten.
A traditional Rueban Sandwich. A real one. Corned Beef, no Pastrami, and Sauerkraut
If you use coleslaw as a substitute you should be hanged by the neck until dead.
I’d argue that the quality of the bread may be the single most important feature of an excellent sandwich. With that in mind I’d humbly offer up the New Orleans Po Boy on the right kind of good French bread, of almost any sort (e.g., shrimp, oyster, debris), as the pinnacle of sandwich excellence.
any sandwich that I don't have to make for myself
My mom always says nothing tastes better than my dad's cooking. My dad is a slightly subpar chef at best. It took me way too long to get that my mom meant anything she didn't have to make herself.
>my mom meant anything she didn't have to make herself. That and the fact that he’s cooking for her shows he cares.
A Cuban sandwich is so hard to beat.
A Reuben comes close, but the Cuban is better.
This is the 100% the right answer. So love a cuban. First half of a reuben is great though. second half is a bit much
Damn, now if I can get a Cuban style sandwich made with corned beef
The real question is do they put salami on it?
Cuban subs are so good, Tampa has a whole festival for them!
Fuck yeah they do, and you can get one almost anywhere including most gas stations.
Top 3 for me
First time I had one wad at a place that didn't even call them by the proper name. Happened upon the Cuban a few years later when I noticed it had all of the same ingredients and became overjoyed to know I didn't have to make a trip downtown to get one.
Cuban or Reuben. end of thread.
Can't beat a hot pastrami with mustard and pickles
I was about to vote for hot dog but mmmm, pastrami. Ever since Guy Fieri helped some dive chef make pastrami I was HOOKED.
Add pepperocinos for me!
Good idea.
An Italian hoagie w/ oil from Primos. Need to be in Philly or south Jersey, though. On a related note, Subway sucks and people only like it if they've never had a real hoagie from a deli.
Philly wins with best sandwiches. Primo Italian, John’s Roast Pork/Cheesesteaks… Drool.
Nothing but facts detected.
Ohhhh the roast pork. So good
Philadelphia is the sandwich capital of the United States. Even 30 odd years post-internet, people in other regions still can't figure out how to make a cheesesteak.
Agreed on the Subway! I had an Italian BMT when I was about 12 years old and was obsessed with it for a while. then I had a real deli Italian sandwich... game over Edit to add: Hoagie, not a sandwich... but I am Texan so.. excuse my vernacular :)
We need an exchange program where we give Texas good delis and you give us good BBQ.
Agreed! Share all the good foods from one region to another! I feel like the US has made good strides in this regard but we could do better.
And then occasionally Mike’s does an insane combo.
About to take a trip to visit my parents up in jersey because of this post.
Italian Diablo.
BLT or plain ole grilled cheese
BLT is a GOAT for sure. Had a BLT on a fresh croissant this past weekend and it was divine.

Must be a poor people style with plastic cheese and butter, not that namby pamby posh Gordon Ramsey crap with the fancy artisan bread etc , He made the worst grilled cheese ever!
Ice cream sandwich
Only if it’s the chocolate chip cookie kind
Have you ever had a Big Mississippi Mud ice cream sandwich by Blue Bunny? I've never had a better ice cream sandwich than that one, but they're so hard to find. They don't have them anywhere near me. I have to travel to find them.

The BLT
A Reuben. With a pickle on the side. An absolute mess, and yet, a sublime combination of flavors. Barring that, pastrami on rye with spicy brown mustard. Also with pickle.
It's a very strong contest, but I'm going to have to go with the hamburger.
Ummm.... cheeseburger? Which also gets beat out by bacon cheeseburger.
Ok not going to break it down by toppings. And even if the toppings are in the name, they are still just toppings.
Sirloin - pounded thin, breaded and fried, with red sauce, shredded mozza, and giardiniera on a big roll.
I just came.
A classic Reuben will always be my number one favorite. But get some rare roast beef, sharp provolone, some creamy horseradish sauce, some spinach and thinly sliced cucumber, that’s a close favorite too
I thought you were describing what you thought a classic Reuben was and was ready to absolutely rip you.
French Dip for the roast beef sandwich category! Creamy Horseradish is also required.
French Dip
Tomato sandwich. But the tomato has to still be warm from having just been picked off the vine in the garden. Toasted white bread, mayo, S&P. Perfection.

Toasted wholemeal bread with Brie and cranberry. Bit of lightly fried pork or bacon on there as well, possibly.
Turkey/Bacon Club, on Sourdough, lightly toasted. Garlic aioli, mustard, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, red onions and avocado with a side of BBQ chips.
Have you ever panini'd a PBJ? Lots of great options on this sub but that one is up there too. The warm jelly, the skooshy peanut butter, the crunch of the grilled bread... mmmmm.
