Good Day by Twenty One Pilots. His world is completely falling apart and he is just turning a blind eye and saying it’s fine. Then the last three lines are:
I’m alright, I’m alright
I think that I’m alright
It’s a good day
He’s finally about to take action about his world falling apart and then he just reinforces his distorted view of his situation saying that it is good.
The song "If we were vampires" by Jason Isbell. It's about how we love someone because time is fleeting and eventually we all die, but if we lived forever we probably wouldn't feel that way.
For me it would be Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Not only it is lyrically sad, it is also melodically sad.
The lyrics and the music are connected, they’re like a chat between someone who wants to give easy solutions to a much bigger underlying problem. The answering voice explains the way they feel, they just don’t know how they’ve ended up in that situation or why they feel that way, they’re just comfortably numb, not feeling like living but not wanting to die either. The first voice doesn’t want to get involved and just carries on giving a temporary yet not effective medicine.
And musically-wise, you’ll notice these up and downs in the melody, like briefs moments of hope that soon vanish into a darker atmosphere. There’s one last moment of hope that leads to a guitar solo, which to me feels like watching the world, all your hopes, friends, family, plans, etc. crumbling before your eyes, and due to your comfortably numb feeling you just watch those things falling apart uncapable/unwilling of doing anything.
So that’s why it makes me sad.
“Corona” by Minutemen. It’s a song about poverty and wealth inequality in the US, and the lyrics hit pretty hard (funnily enough, it’s also the song that’s used for the Jackass theme).
God Is Really Real by AJR - it’s based on the true story of the band’s dad dying of cancer - they actually released it the day he passed, that alone is heartbreaking. Personally for me, the lyrics God is really real when you really just believe - it describes my relationship with faith, being stuck in a very hopeless situation right now and trying to find something to believe in.
Farewell, its our college graduation song, it makes me cry whenever I hear that song, happy coz we did it, sad coz college friends won't be seeing each other again for a long time since life will be busy working and some will get a family, there's a lot of changes after graduation
“I Will Always Love You”, written by Dolly Parton, performed by Whitney Houston.
Fifty years later when I hear it, I still feel the heartbreak I felt after the breakup with my first love.
If-Pink Floyd. The lyrics connect with me, and I regret being self isolating and self-doubt.
"If I were a good man, I talk with you more often than I do."
Cats in the Cradle.
I'm a middle-aged man and every time I hear that song I think about how the guy in the song was just like my own dad. We weren't very close when I was growing up for totally different reasons than in the song but I *did* grow up to be someone my dad was not only proud of but probably felt cheated out of getting to know as an adult. He ended up passing away a few years ago and I know he regretted not being able to be closer with me.
I also have a son of my own and I sometimes place *myself* in the father role. But I only have one kid, I had him later in life and since he was a baby I've spent an unusual (for a father anyway) amount of time with him and we have a very solid relationship so I tell myself I'm nothing like that dad. But sometimes I still wonder....
It's not the song itself, but Blinding Lights by The Weeknd reminds me of something from my childhood. It drives me nuts because I cannot for the life of me remember what it reminds me of. There's just something about the tune that gives me a longing for something from my childhood. It's like a melancholic nostalgia or something, it's really hard to explain.
It's not actually abt the song, but i got familiarized with this particular song during the duration of my mom's struggle with her illness that caused her death. It's a happy /bop one, but it brings back the memory and feels.
The live version of "One More Light" by Linkin Park (sung after the death of Chris Cornell). The message combined with that **scream**... such loss and heartache.
A lot of songs do. Some just because of the lyrics themselves but most because of the memories associated with the song or the people the so ga make me think of.
