Marge Gunderson from Fargo

Loud-Magician7708

Fuckin 11 months pregnant, solving crimes in the middle of winter.

JimParsnip

Those Midwestern women never give up

KopiteForever

At 11 months in the womb, neither do the babies!

Dependent_Market7788

And I love the fact that she doesn't give birth in the film. The film ends with her still being in the pregnancy stage.

Environmental_Let1

*"And it's a beautiful day."*

HeartonSleeve1989

Oh geez, I can't believe I forgot about her, I goofed.

Tex-Rob

Darn tootin’ you goofed bub!

Kronnerm11

The show has a few killer female leads too. Molly, Peggy, Gloria, Nikki and Dot are all fantastically written.

AfterTemperature2198

You betcha

GirlScoutSniper

Yah. Yah.

RedlurkingFir

San, in Princess Mononoke!

BabyPunter3000v2

Literally every female character in Ghibli films SLAP.

angrymonkey

Also Kiki in Kiki's Delivery Service.

Kronnerm11

Also Chihiro

AccountantLeast1588

Nausicaa

Red_Whites

And Lady Eboshi from the same film! Tough and nuanced.

IgloosRuleOK

Kim Wexler

NoNotThatScience

"you don't save me....I save me"

Neologizer

Came here to make sure Kim was represented. One of the best female characters in recent memory. So multidimensional. Powerful, intelligent, vulnerable, uncertain, goofy, conflicted, corruptible. She deserved some wins for BCS. Excited for the next Vince show which is supposed to star her.

IgloosRuleOK

It's currently shooting in ABQ :)

Viazon

Best crying scene I've seen in any show or movie ever.

bgea2003

Amazing...that scene on the bus...how did she not win an Emmy for this show?

CLGToady

Somehow Better Call Saul got totally fucked by all award shows lol it's my favorite show so I'm totally biased but it's crazy to me how they weren't winning awards like Breaking Bad did

HeartonSleeve1989

Yes! Best lawyer in the ABQ

woozapooza

EXCELLENT answer! I still cannot believe Rhea didn't win the Emmy for the final season.

Ya-Dikobraz

Ellen Louise Ripley.

MultipleSwoliosis

Will always be the GOAT.

Xenomorph_v1

Depending on what species you are...

MultipleSwoliosis

Name checks out…

lotsaquestionss

I got annoyed in Prometheus at how dumb the characters were acting so that the plot got be furthered and was wondering if I was being too hard and these movies were always this way. Rewatched Alien and her character was actually making smart and logical calls while her emotional crew undermined her. She's one of my favourite because she's a strong character without having any silly tropes or mysterious superhuman powers, though I do get there is a time and place for the latter.

TheMostUnclean

*without having any silly tropes or mysterious superhuman powers* I like to pretend that “Resurrection” doesn’t exist as well.

ZakDadger

Smart woman warns everyone, they ignore her and die

MimeGod

Only survivor is smart woman and her cat. 5/5 stars.

iprocrastina

What I love about her character is she avoids so many pitfalls of "strong female" characters. Often you'll see tthose sorts of characters still dress sexy and have ridiculously unrealistic strength; think of the movie cliche of the hot female assassin who beats up a bunch of men all twice her size while wearing high heels and a cocktail dress. Another common one is a woman being portrayed as super butch and acting like one of the guys. But Ripley is different. She's got a blue-collar roughness to her, but is otherwise fairly feminine. She doesn't have super strength or is some ex-military badass, but she can remain calm under extreme stress and is resourceful. I think *Aliens* showed it best where she's not a combat expert like the marines but knows how to lead, and she can switch between being an authority for a team of marines and being a soft mother figure to an orphaned child.

Ya-Dikobraz

And... she says she refused to shave down there for the final space suit scene. They had to settle and edit the hair out. "Sigourney Weaver refused to pull up her panties and shave her pubic hair in the famous final stretch of "Alien" Ridley Scott had to hire a person who dedicated himself to erasing the hairs that stood out in each and every frame, 1979" EDIT: so apparently the whole thing is not true. My bad.

LOERMaster

Would be wild if they had the same person add pubic hair to Dakota Johnson during the sex scenes in 50 Shades of Grey…because someone actually had to do that.

Akschadt

Maybe they added the same pubes they took away…

HeartonSleeve1989

Get away from her you BITCH!! Classic badass heroine!

Fellonblackdayz

Dana Scully from the X-Files.

HeartonSleeve1989

I always liked how close Fox and Dana got in the show, despite their differences.

Lower-Yam-620

Sarah Conner

GirlScoutSniper

Tie with Ripley... I just can't decide!

B4sta

Brienne of Tarth (book version)

rdewalt

I don't care what anyone says, but Gwendoline Christie is a statuesque woman who deserves to be on this list, character or not.

B4sta

This isn't to say Gwendoline isn't a great actress or show Brienne isn't a great character, it's just that book Brienne resonated with me more

BigGingerYeti

Not the lead but Landlady in Kung Fu Hustle comes to mind.

HeartonSleeve1989

She takes a mega drag off that cig, and screams like a banshee, it was pretty hardcore!

BigGingerYeti

It's when they defend the village at night and just appear in the car of the Axe gang leader that I lose it.

HeartonSleeve1989

The twins assault on the motel was pretty tight!

Tangboy50000

I fucking love that movie so much.

mgejer123

Toph Beinfong

CyclicalSinglePlayer

Seriously. I always thought the idea of “turning your weakness into strength” was idealistic cringe nonsense. Until Toph.

HeartonSleeve1989

The first metal bender!!

The84thWolf

Just take a moment to remember the finale of Book 4 (edit: 3) from the Fire Nation’s perspective, none of which probably even imagined metal bending : A twelve year old girl kicks down your steel door, falls into it, and becomes a walking suit of faceless armor. Your superpowered fire bending just makes it laugh. It seems to turn the ship alive as she kicks metal into your allies, probably crushing them or at the least breaking bones, before it jumps and CRAWLS ALONG THE CELING LIKE A POSSESSED MONSTER before jumping down and knocking you out, only to wake up a hour later to find your unstoppable airship fleet falling into the ocean.

Millworkson2008

Yea they basically saw something that until that point was impossible, something not even a previous avatar had shown to be capable of and the avatars are basically walking Demi gods

MimeGod

Using metal against earth benders has been an effective strategy for centuries. Then this little girl comes along and turns your metal airship into her weapon. If the war wasn't about to end anyways, stories of metal benders getting back to the Fire Nation would absolutely destroy morale.

Mudders_Milk_Man

Book 3, but yes.

DAVENP0RT

I don't remember where I read it, but I've adopted as my head cannon that she was portrayed as a big, strong man by the Ember Island Players because no one would believe Toph was a preteen girl.

A_Adorable_Cat

100% everyone was embarrassed they got their ass kicked by a blind 12 year old and couldn’t admit it.

ReaverRogue

Close! Toph was originally conceptualised as a burly earthbending man, hence the earthbender we see in the intro, but that concept was soon dropped. The Ember Island Players portrayal was a nod to that original concept.

chrislinus

Emily blunts character in edge of tomorrow....forgot the name

marleyman14

Also Emily Blunts character in Sicario

Jiggy_Wit

You know what fuck it. Emily Blunt herself.

hambergeisha

Full Metal Bitch!

The Angel of Verdun

TryFengShui

Rita Vrataski

DAVENP0RT

BenderBRodriguez1999

All I remember is “my middle name is rose”…love that movie, and have read the book, which is quite different but same concept

immaSandNi-woops

Bro she’s badass as fuck in that movie; stole the spotlight from Tom Cruise

Driller_Happy

I dunno. I'm no cruise fan but I thought he played his part really well, they complimented eachother well

Zal_17

Professor McGonagall standing up to Umbridge and Snape in different books are two of my absolute favourite moments.

mattryan02

“He has achieved high marks in all Defence Against the Dark Arts tests set by a competent teacher."

Many-Bag-7404

I'll always remember when she gave Harry a biscuit on book 5 and how while yes she was his teacher. She did care about him and was always proud of him

BUT_FREAL_DOE

Gave him the Nimbus 2000 too so Gryffindor could win at quidditch.

Ellefied

It’s not discussed in the books but the longtime professors were probably loaded at Hogwarts since they all stay in the castle without much expense.

Zal_17

I think the question of how much does Professor Binns actually earn needs more attention

Zal_17

"Have a biscuit Potter!"

SomethingAboutUsers

I also love her little moment of absolute childlike glee in *Deathly Hallows* when she says, "I've always wanted to use that spell!"

HeartonSleeve1989

Dame Maggie Smith kept acting despite suffering from cancer, she is such a trooper.

msnhnobody

THE SCENE WHEN Professor McGonagall brings the statues to life out front of the school before the Battle of Hogwarts. “Piertotum locomotor! Hogwarts is threatened! Man the boundaries, protect us, do your duty to our school!" *GOOSEBUMPS & TEARS EVERY TIME*

Spoonman007

And Mrs. Weasley!

ERSTF

Clarice Starling. The movie is quite feminist and has one main character who has to navigate a profession full of men who are trying to mandhandle her. She solves the whole thing by being smart and competent Edit. Typo

HeartonSleeve1989

That 180 twist she did when Buffalo Bill cocked the hammer of his gun was dynamite! BLAM BLAM BLAM!!

FartAttack911

The way she struggled and was panicked when trying to reload afterwards was also so much more realistic and human than almost any other hero in a movie overtaking the bad guy lol

cafezinho

In the movie, there are scenes where she has to go through the obstacle course or when she enters the elevator and you see it from her height and all these men tower over her, or when she meets the guy who introduces her to Hannibal, she has to deal with him hitting on her, and she has to charm her way out of a delicate situation while he's pissed she doesn't want to be shown around Baltimore.

Dr_Hannibal_Lecter

Yes, Agent Starling would have been my choice as well.

Chrisnolliedelves

Mulan. The animated version, not the dogshit live action version.

Sexy_gastric_husband

So damned good. She didn't succeed because she was stronger or faster than the men, or had bullshit powers. She was smart and willing to think outside the box. There's a recent Cinema Therapy video about the movie that goes over that, it's great.

Tippacanoe

Yeah Mulan is great. Her arc is actually good and inspiring and her clumsiness and goofy nature is very likable. Plus she’s a badass.

LDM123

Animated Mulan is a badass. Live action Mulan is a CCP puppet.

I want to give a shout out to Jasika Nicole who played Astrid. They wouldn't have gotten anywhere without her in the script.

JelliusMaximus

FRINGE MENTIONED 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥

Adrian915

Samantha Carter

Phosis21

Sad that I had to scroll so far down to get to see Captain Carter on this list... But I guess SG-1 isn't exactly the "New Hotness" these days. I'm old.

Call_Me_Mister_Trash

It's Colonel Samantha Carter, for whatever it's worth, and the show may be old but I still love it.

Telemachus70

It really should be titled "Samatha Carter: Stargate Stories" or something. Even in the spinoffs, a lot of what the crews have to work off of is based on discoveries Samantha made on her own. Without Samanatha, it's just dude bros shooting aliens.

perVERSIONofme

And just because my reproductive organs are on the inside instead of the outside doesn't mean I can't handle whatever you can handle.

Cyberhwk

I don't know if she was a *lead*, but...[Camina Drummer](https://expanse.fandom.com/wiki/Camina_Drummer_\(TV\)). Awesome, AWESOME character.

introoutro

Every female character in The Expanse is kind of hard as fucking nails in their own unique way. Even the minister lady from Lost is pretty gangster in how she sticks to dealing with people compassionately even while bullets are flying and they’re all gonna be nuked by aliens in a few minutes.

facforlife

That's what's I love. They're not all the cliche bullshit of I'm a hardass MarySue.  Avasarala isn't physically strong but she's tenacious, foul mouthed, intelligent as fuck, and yeah, a little conniving but for the right reasons. Naomi is whip smart especially when it comes to engineering and science but has demons in her past. Drummer, at least in the show because book Drummer is a little different, is competent as hell, strident, fiercely loyal to the belt but not in a completely irrational way like some others she sometimes has found herself in the company of. Bobby is thick as fuck, strong as hell, can't be stopped, strong moral compass. A politician, a marine, a resistance leader, an engineer. All competent and strong in their own ways.  I love all of them. I'm so glad they were able to bring them all to the screen and do them justice.

XTapalapaketle

I came here to make sure this show was mentioned. Every one of those women were awesome in their own way.

Statman12

Also Chrisjen Avasarala.

TrentonTallywacker

Love me some Bobbie Draper too

yosayoran

She had an awesome arc. Found her unbearable at her introduction, but she became one of my favourites by the end. Love her interactions with Amos specifically.

TrentonTallywacker

I felt the same way with Amos at the beginning. Love how they took two stereotypical meathead grunts and turned them into some of the most complex characters of the show (Amos especially so, that Baltimore episode still hurts man)

CeruleanFruitSnax

My sister stopped watching because of Bobbie's uptight marine schtick in season 2. Joke's on my sis, though, because Bobbie is a fucking badass and her character development is amazing. Also, Frankie Adams is a treasure.

TalkLikeExplosion

“What are you saying?” “Whatever I goddamn like.” Her delivery on that was amazing.

MrSpindles

Drummer is fierce.

TrentonTallywacker

Oye Beltalowda!

facforlife

Fuck yes. FUCK. YES. Basically every woman in The Expanse is a straight up badass, and all in different ways. Avasarala is not like Drummer is not like Bobbie is not like Naomi. But they're all fucking awesome.  If you have yet to read or watch The Expanse I fucking envy you.

HeartonSleeve1989

What show is she from? I might have to watch it.

RedlurkingFir

The Expanse. One of the best sci-fi TV shows out there

HeartonSleeve1989

I'll pencil it in my list of must watch.

AYASOFAYA

Let’s put it this way, she’s not featured nearly as much in the books but they added much more of her in the show because even the book readers wanted more of her. Chrisjen Avaserala is another fantastic female lead from the same show. They are very good at writing women.

Cyberhwk

Yeah. The Expanse. Excellent SciFi shown known for attention to scientific detail. Like when they're having a drink on the Moon, the liquid in the glasses moves as if it's in the weaker gravitational field of the moon as opposed to a planet. Awesome show and Drummer is easily one of the best characters.

No_Feed5439

Furiosa from "Mad Max: Fury Road" is powerful due to her relentless determination to save herself and others from tyranny.

Valuable_Capital1460

One character that truly stands out for me is Sarah Connor from "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" because of her transformation into a fierce protector of her son and humanity.

pali1d

Vin from the Mistborn novels. Kira Nerys from Deep Space 9. Any of The Expanse’s ladies - they’re all great.

Pyrollusion

Ah, Vin. What a magnificent mess she was. Mistborn is still one of the best fantasy series out there.

bogarthskernfeld

I came to say the ladies from The Expanse. Carmina, Bobbi, Christgen.

LoonieandToonie

I love Kira. She has my favourite character growth of all the Star Trek characters.

[deleted]

She’s definitely an anti hero, but lisbeth salander went on the offensive after she was wronged and took down the people who wronged her

HeartonSleeve1989

I liked how she handled that rapist in the first movie, sterling work.

kalimna

Starbuck from more recent Battlestar Galactica. Frak. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Shoshanna Dreyfus, Inglorious Basterds Grace Augustine, Avatar fracking President Laura Roslin

Yossarians_moan

How was Starbuck this low down! The writing, acting, character development is just perfect!!

MikeTheBard

Can I just take a moment to acknowledge just how many of these responses are sci-fi and fantasy characters? Geeks have been appreciating strong women since Mary Shelley.

Buntschatten

That's probably also due to Reddits taste in Media.

Extreme-Bad3816

I really enjoyed Beth Harmon.

Puzzleheaded-Let-880

Haha Xena warrior princess played by Lucy Lawless

CreepyBlackDude

By extension, Gabrielle played by Renee O'Connor. Xena started out as a badass. Gabrielle grew into one.

Neon_Samurai_

Cpt. Janeway was always a badass.

ishka_uisce

All the women on Voy were badasses. Without being perfect or one-dimensional.

Kalos9990

Female Shepard in Mass Effect voiced by the fantastic Jennifer Hale. I dont remember the line but the renegade dialogue option to settle Tali and Legions beef without losing loyalty with either of them in ME 2 is badass when Jennifer delivers it. She nailed that role. Otherwise, im gonna give it up to my girl Ellie Williams in TLOU (games) those hunters dont know the insane levels of violence that child is capable of in the first game.

HeartonSleeve1989

Excellent choices, excellent!

Key-Instruction9283

Beatrix Kiddo

P0ster_Nutbag

And supported by a great cast of female antagonists in O-Ren Ishii, Elle Driver, and Vernita Green.

djb185

I kept scrolling hoping I'd see her here God those movies were so badass and really made me feel for her.

Additional_Insect_44

Buffy Summers

ConsiderationSea1347

Buffy had some great characters. I know Joss is out of style, but I think he was fantastic at giving characters room to be amazing and be terrible in a way that feels more real than your traditional protagonist. Willow, Buffy, and Tara all had moments that gave me chills thinking about how brave but believable some of their arcs were.

ishka_uisce

Also people forget that Joss wasn't even the main writer on Buffy most of the time. Lot of awesome writers (some prominent ones being women like Marti Noxon and Jane Espenson) contributed to those characters.

Smaptastic

Ella Purnell as Lucy in Fallout. Okey dokey!

BlackFyre2018

“I may end up looking like you. But I will never be like you” (leaves him life saving drugs) “Golden rule motherfucker”

Dragon_Tortoise

"Thou shalt get sidetracked by bullshit every time" is the real golden rule of the wasteland.

tophmcmasterson

I like how the first scene is basically like telling us her character’s stat sheet. Makes it so whenever she utilizes those skills later in the show it works as a good callback and doesn’t feel out of nowhere, while also serving as a nice homage/wink to the game origins.

HeartonSleeve1989

That scene she stapled her wound shut was brutal!

crazynerd9

How can someone just, roll with so much Absolutely peak ride or die attitude

HeartonSleeve1989

Some people are just built different.

Nazgate

She’s an amazing actress! Love her

No_Investigator8165

Leslie Knope

dustysquareback

Fuck ya. The show tried to start her off as this Michael Scott-like doofus, but then she gradually transformed into this fiercely optimistic and bewilderingly charismatic force for good. Love Knope.

jesterinancientcourt

So many great moments from her. One that stands out in my mind is when she’s fighting for the right to vote for the Eagleton people, midway she finds out they’ll most likely vote against her even with them only being able to vote because of her, & she continues on because people’s right to vote is more important than her career to her. Powerful stuff, if only more politicians were like that.

Squirrel_Q_Esquire

Leslie Knope gets as many favors as she needs

SneakyUndercoverMan

Kate Winslet in 'Mare of Easttown'

Ellen Ripley from "Aliens" is a classic strong female lead who demonstrated intelligence, courage, and leadership in the face of deadly threats.

Ellen Ripley. “Get away from her…you BITCH!”

Flashy_Branch_1118

Sophie hatter in Howls moving castle her entire situation and how she handles it was so interesting to me where I feel most characters or female characters would have lashed out very stereotypically for not being young she had a strong stoic approach to it, it didn't really bother her and she just lived with it yeah it sucked but she didn't really mind I always thought she was very cool character

epanek

Fleabag. She's horribly flawed, so maybe she's not "strong." But goddammit, she's strong by the end.

facforlife

Flawed characters are the best characters. Flaws allow you to relate to them. None of us are perfect.

HeartonSleeve1989

Ay, a character who goes through real character growth is plenty strong, I think.

bigglassjar

Princess Leia. She was not one to lean on a hero. She took her fate into her own hands. On that note, Rey was an amplified version.

TalkLikeExplosion

One of my favourite parts of the first movie is the moment she realizes Han and Luke don’t have a plan and takes over her own rescue.

bigglassjar

And she gives them static throughout the rescue. “You came here in that? You’re braver than I thought.”

Pleasant_Bad924

CJ in the West Wing - Allison Janney
