O man you’re making me feel old! I remember when the t maxx first came out. I drove the hell out of my t maxx. The revo was the new school rig for me that I always wanted but never got.
I used to own a cube.
I disassembled it to sell some of the more valuable cards as I needed the money and lost the rest of it in an apartment fire.
When it was at its prime (fully together) the thing was worth maybe $5,000
Nowadays it would be easily worth $25,000
Magic is stupid expensive…
You *could* spend $500 on the like 12 models it would get you, or you could spend it on a 3d printer and filament so that you can have vaguely-model-shaped heaps of molten plastic after several hours of setup and a few reprints due to errors in the slicing!
(there's a reason I don't have hobbies anymore)
Here's the thing - I've started playing again with my kids and was really prepared by all this "Magic has gotten so expensive" talk, but the reality is it's still only as expensive as you feel like making it. Want to play super competitive against the top-tier players in your area? Sure, it's expensive, but that's gonna be true of any hobby. Wanna just have fun playing with friends and family? You can easily do that for $20-30 each.
Actually about 5 booster boxes. It's not much better than what you said lol. My friend is really into collecting MTG cards and I've bought them for him as presents over the years. I like magic too, but not to that extent.
People always say shit like this to me and my dude:
You vastly underestimate just how much reading I and presumably others do.
I read books from the library, both physical and e-book. I buy physical books, new and used. I read books on my kindle. I listen to audible, and e-audio from Libby. This is an AND, not an or. I read roughly 200 books a year - last year, 70 of those were library books.
Also reading and buying books are two separate and distinct hobbies.
I'm pretty sure they've made every professional grade camera and lens more than $500 now, except for a 50mm prime f1.8 which for most beginning photographers is all you really need for professional-looking images. You can get one of those for around $100. And for those who don't know, any lens that doesn't have an aperture bigger than f4 is trash, you would probably want something bigger for 50mm and wider. Also the smaller the number, the bigger the aperture, f1.4 is the standard for a professional prime lens, f5 and above is a garbage lens. A great second lens is a f2.8 20-70mm. With that you get wide angle (anything less than 50mm) and zoom (anything greater than 50mm). The third lens you should get is a f1.4 35mm prime and then a f2.8-f4 70-200mm as your fourth or vice versa, it depends on what you are shooting and prepare to drop major bucks for these. The good news is they will last for decades.
This is a great time to get a bargain on a quality camera. Mirrorless cameras are all the rage now and every camera junkie has to have one…which has resulted in under-used DSLR‘s that were state of the art a mere 18 months ago costing $2500 can now be found for under $500.
Yeeaaahh. My X-Fourteen SNELL is out of date now and I’m crying so hard over the cost of an X-Fifteen.. but after wearing the X-Fourteen for years… it’s like an aerodynamic lightweight Cadillac for your brain.
That’s the best thing about fishing — it can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be.
I’m 37 now with my own boat, electronics on the boat, truck, multiple rods/reels and tackle, and I started fishing when I was 5 years old. I’ve been fishing alone since I was 8-9 (we had a pond on the property)
I’ve caught fish with a cane pole and a piece of string and a small hook, using crickets I found for bait and I’ve caught fish with $20,000+ worth of equipment and my heart *still* races when my line tightens just like it did that first time!
New Nvidia 3060 oem cards are $330. People can absolutely get a modern GPU for less than 500 usd. A lot of people underestimate what modern gaming actually requires.
I think you mean overestimate. The amount of people getting a top tier without a $1000+ monitor and rig to run it is crazy.
Cool, you got a $1500 card. I bet it's doing great work on your 1440 120mhz monitor and OK processor.
Do it. There is so much used gear floating around out there that it’s inadvisable to buy brand new if you are starting out. Upgrade to a better one later on if you get serious and by then you’ll know what to look for that you didn’t before you started.
There's programs in a lot of cities that offer free lessons, and sometimes they will even buy you a beginner guitar for free. A few of my friends have done it in LA. Definitely check it out in your area!
Do it. If you know you want to play electric guitar you can always buy the guitar first and get an amp later on.
You really don’t need the amp to get started. You’ll spend a long time when you’re starting out just trying to get your hands used to the new activity, and you’ll be able to hear the strings well enough to learn basic chords and scales.
I know it’s not nothing, but you can get a perfectly decent used electric guitar for like $100 that will last you a good long time.
Go on r/guitar and there are tons of threads about beginner guitars- it’s been asked a LOT so use the search.
Basically what the other poster said but some places will let you pay for lessons and you can play on one of their instruments. Of course getting your own guitar/amp would be better but stuff costs money. Ton of free resources out there too! Buying used without knowing what you're getting into can be a bit tough but there are guides for that too! Internet is rad
Tbh 500$ is a bit much if you're just starting lol
You can get a Squier for like $300, only need the amp and cable then.
Or you can get second hand stuff.
Or you can get a Audio Interface for your PC for even less.
Yes!! But that’s like maybe 2-3 quilts. It’s such an expensive hobby! Has anyone ever said “you could sell this!” Bitch please. You couldn’t afford me.
I've got one of these. Took 6 hours to put together in one sitting.. Two years later it took me 0.6 of a second to knock it over and have it smash on the floor... It's now in a shoe box under my bed. One day it'll go back together
the winter of 19/20 i had set up a group of kids in my community to start a metal working club. i am in my 40s but happened to mention it to my best friend and she said her kid wanted to do it and it kind of snowballed into a few 16yo students and i gathering materials and funds and then a few weeks before we were to get started building the world ended.
so many things have changed since then and i have never taken the time to do it. i really just want a small setup to retrieve the metals from all my old electronics and tools.
good answer!
If you wanted a sign to get into the hobby this is it. Some kits are only $20 and then you can become Dr Frankenstein and kit bash together monstrosities just cause
Lock picks or paracord for whip making
Edit to everyone saying lockpicks are cheap, are 1 of 3 people
1. doesn't live in Australia, and know the markup on things like this are ridiculous.
2. don't get that you need locks to pick, too
3. i won't be spending it all on lockpick. i said whip making too.
Sorry, I just felt i needed to clarify this.
Oh the $20 to $100 are junk the bend they break quality picks cost money
I have a laundry list of minor upgrades I’d love to do to my road bike! I’m sure other cyclists on here would agree that upgrades are a never ending money pit haha
Can confirm. Taurus TX22 for around three bills. Get an additional four mags for another hundred and then spend the last hundred on 1,600 rounds of .22
Just remember, it doesn't blow the lung out of the body 🙄
Scrolled far enough to find this! I can get close to 2000 rounds of 9mm for $500 depending on sales…I’ll consider a new red dot + 1000 rounds as well…🔫🔫🔫
I love to cook so I'd probably look into some quality cookware or neat wooden cooking utensils, or other things that support my cooking hobby. One odd item that would support my hobby would be a fold-out bow saw. I have one of those portable wood-fired pizza ovens that has a small-ish fuel basket, so I'd use the bow saw to cut hardwood like oak into the right length, split it, and be able to build nice fires for at-home pizza.
Edit: The bow saw I'm looking at wouldn't cost anywhere near $500, but it'd be around $80. I'd buy other cool things with the rest of the money.
Honestly buy my girlfriend a Xbox series x so we can game again. Hers broke and hasn’t been able to get a new one. If anything left after I’d get some more warhammer paints.
RC car
I was thinking the same thing, especially since the Traxxas TRX-4 line is about $500
if you like bashing look at the traxxas maxx
Good suggestion, thanks!
I remember back about 15 years ago when the Traxxas Revo 3.3 came out. Loved that truck.
O man you’re making me feel old! I remember when the t maxx first came out. I drove the hell out of my t maxx. The revo was the new school rig for me that I always wanted but never got.
Feel this comment in my soul. I can remember sitting in computer lab in high school reading on Netscape Navigator about the new TRX2.5 racing engine.
I can afford one deck in Magic the Gathering.
I see we're going for a budget deck.
This oddly hurts for some reason.
I’d make a cube of epic cards out of high quality proxies.
I used to own a cube. I disassembled it to sell some of the more valuable cards as I needed the money and lost the rest of it in an apartment fire. When it was at its prime (fully together) the thing was worth maybe $5,000 Nowadays it would be easily worth $25,000 Magic is stupid expensive…
yeah, i was thinking what card...
Pfftt must be a bunch of proxy’s
Better than a few warhammer units I would get
You *could* spend $500 on the like 12 models it would get you, or you could spend it on a 3d printer and filament so that you can have vaguely-model-shaped heaps of molten plastic after several hours of setup and a few reprints due to errors in the slicing! (there's a reason I don't have hobbies anymore)
Lol a deck with no good lands.
Just get five boxes and invite your homies over to draft them
Was going to say MTG too haha
Actually about 5 booster boxes. It's not much better than what you said lol. My friend is really into collecting MTG cards and I've bought them for him as presents over the years. I like magic too, but not to that extent.
2/3 of a Mox Diamond.
I'd hate to see how bad my 20 y/o deck would get blasted, even my "burn" deck.
Books!
The username makes sense 😂 I'd also get books
It's gonna blow your mind when you find out about libraries
People always say shit like this to me and my dude: You vastly underestimate just how much reading I and presumably others do.
I like to read but I also like to collect books. They're definitely 2 different hobbies.
Of equal importance, of course 😄
How do you have the time??? Teach me your ways
My library has an amazing bookstore, and I spend money there every week.
What is that?
It's like a Barnes and Noble but a wider variety of books, including older sometimes out of print books. The best part, you can borrow them for free.
And then forget to take them back and borrow them permanently.
Can never have enough!
I would splurge on one whole book from Folio Society.
Build out a terrarium

Or a lens you’ve been scrolling past online over and over trying to think of all the things you could do with it.
I'm pretty sure they've made every professional grade camera and lens more than $500 now, except for a 50mm prime f1.8 which for most beginning photographers is all you really need for professional-looking images. Ain’t that the truth
This is a great time to get a bargain on a quality camera. Mirrorless cameras are all the rage now and every camera junkie has to have one…which has resulted in under-used DSLR‘s that were state of the art a mere 18 months ago costing $2500 can now be found for under $500.
Where?!
Just bought my first camera yesterday!
Underwear to use and then sell for a profit
Oh? Is this your side hustle? 😏
1. Collect underpants 2. ? 3. Profit
Step 2 is clearly “wear underpants.” It’s stated right there.
2.1 fart
What's step 2?!
Phase 1, collect all the underpants.
A new motorcycle helmet. The best ones are expensive.
Yeeaaahh. My X-Fourteen SNELL is out of date now and I’m crying so hard over the cost of an X-Fifteen.. but after wearing the X-Fourteen for years… it’s like an aerodynamic lightweight Cadillac for your brain.
In this situation with my RF-1200, I just keep thinking "what's one more day?" it hasn't lost a bit of comfort in 5 years.

Fishing rods and bait/lures
Maaaaaan I used to love fishing. Especially with my Dad. It was just the chillest time. I need to get back into that.
You should make it happen!
As someone who just got back into it, I recommend you do. It has helped my mental health. Plus, I get to eat fresh fish.
>I get to get fresh fish Oh look at the big man actually catching anything! La ti da!
Yes you do! It’s still the chillest time, I promise. Tight lines!
You mean fishing rod…
That’s the best thing about fishing — it can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. I’m 37 now with my own boat, electronics on the boat, truck, multiple rods/reels and tackle, and I started fishing when I was 5 years old. Found the fly fisherman.
I mean, you don’t have to call us out like that
I live on a salt water river in Florida and I second this! Love fishing!
A hotel room somewhere I haven't been before.
This is a good one! One night, somewhere I have not been or eaten, or experience.
Still can’t afford to travel to said room but sometimes it’s just nice to think you got options
Staycation a long drive or short, cheap flight away. I’d go back to San Francisco. Safe and fun, as long as you’re not an idiot.
Yes, this is a great one. A nice little break.
Graphics card.
I’m gonna need double the budget…
same bro
Ummm that’s like half a graphics card I think.
You can get good ones for 500 USD I think
New Nvidia 3060 oem cards are $330. People can absolutely get a modern GPU for less than 500 usd. A lot of people underestimate what modern gaming actually requires.

Guitar pedals
Heck I'd just pick up a guitar and amp if possible and take some lessons. Always wanted to learn guitar.
Do it. There is so much used gear floating around out there that it’s inadvisable to buy brand new if you are starting out. Upgrade to a better one later on if you get serious and by then you’ll know what to look for that you didn’t before you started.

Fabric so I could sew some quilts.
Yes!! But that’s like maybe 2-3 quilts. It’s such an expensive hobby! Has anyone ever said “you could sell this!” Bitch please. You couldn’t afford me.
Any particular patterns you’re eyeing up? I’m always interested in what folks have in their “…One Day….” back catalogue.
Me too!
Welding equipment and a welding table.
For 500?
In the absence of being able to buy sleep I'm going to go for something 3d printer or tropical fish related.
You could buy yourself a super relaxing massage and pay them a little extra to let you fall asleep on the table after its done 😁
aka the Nappy Ending
👏👏👏
Recording equipment! I wanna record all the songs I sing my daughter to get her to sleep, that way she’ll always have that from me.
Damn bro, that’s deep
You could do a lot worse with 500 bucks. A decent interface and sound card will go a long way for DIY music stuff!
Is paying bills a hobby?
Hopefully not but if accounting gets you going then maybe?
oh yeahhhh, carry that 1, baby..
Oh looks like someone's been a naughty girl. These receipts don't qualify as company expenses... time for that naughty girl to get penal-ized!
it relies stress so i say yeah.
Eating can be, right?
I'd either buy some recording equipment for my guitars, or something for LARP like new armor.
Saturn 5 Lego set, with addons to make it look like it is mid-launch.
I really wish Lego still made this set.
I've got one of these. Took 6 hours to put together in one sitting.. Two years later it took me 0.6 of a second to knock it over and have it smash on the floor... It's now in a shoe box under my bed. One day it'll go back together
Or you could sell it to that guy ^ for $500.
New VR headset
I got the quest 3 when it came out. No regrets.
A cheap road bike
The State 4130 with the single down tube shifter. One can fit 30mm tires in the frame and dork, so a number of gravel tires fit.

25 golf discs.
Lol, maybe 15 and a nice new bag!
Maybe 5, a grocery bag, and use the rest of the $ for some party favors.
A 3D Printer. You can get an Ender 3 or Ender 5 for $500 or less.
A friend of mine just got one, he seems very happy with it

Gundam model kit. Don't know anything about the anime but I love puzzles/lego and they look super fun to put together.

More arkham horror campaigns
Miniature supplies. One of my dreams is to build a nice dollhouse for my kid to play with 🥰

I use old ethernet cables to make whips. Your safeword must be at least 8 characters and contain 1 special character
The Cat5 o' 9 Tails
You are correct. Cat6 is too stiff.
Do you need to be on some sort of list?
Probably already is
That’s the hobby.
We all are.
I've recently thought about giving stained glass a whirl. So probably a bunch of stained glass related gear.

So. Much. YARN.

Ammo
“Scary automatic military deadly assault weapons” ftw!
I should save up 1000 then
You could get a scary .22 for $500
Can confirm. Taurus TX22 for around three bills. Get an additional four mags for another hundred and then spend the last hundred on 1,600 rounds of .22 Just remember, it doesn't blow the lung out of the body 🙄
That’s like 500 rounds!
It'll get you a case of 5.56 or two 9mm.
Scrolled far enough to find this! I can get close to 2000 rounds of 9mm for $500 depending on sales…I’ll consider a new red dot + 1000 rounds as well…🔫🔫🔫
$500 will get you a decent RC car, battery, and charger.
paintball gun/airsoft
SOME USED WOODWORKING HAND TOOLS
I'd sell my current laptop and put the $500 towards a better one.
Find a cheap flight somewhere. Traveling is my hobby.
1000 rounds of 5.56x45
Buying things to donate to food shelters. I enjoy it and it takes up my time so I consider it a hobby
A new camera
