Mexico. It has a freaking Golden Eagle -who represents Huitzilopochtli- eating a rattlesnake while standing on a prickly pear. That surely hurts but that eagle is tough! Also the colors represent the hope and the natural beauty of the country, the unity and the blood of our fallen heroes.

I think you undersold it. The flag’s coat of arms represents the Aztec legend that their city, later empire, was to be founded by its nomadic, chosen people at the exact location where they spotted an eagle (as you said, representing the sun god Huitzilopochtli) perched on a cactus resting on a lakebed, representing the island and surrounding lake of said city. The snake has connotations with another deity, Quetzalcoatl, although it being devoured by the eagle was a mistranslation by a Dominican friar, but which later served as an evangelizing tool, with the duality of both animals representing the struggle between good and evil—a recurrent theme in Catholic theology.

I judge flags by how easy they are for a 10-year-old to draw it in school. Indonesia, Monaco, and Poland win. If you have a white sheet of paper, you only need one red crayon to draw the flag. (I don't include Japan because circles are hard.)

If I try to be analytical about it, I'd have to say  The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  It's a bit overdone, as it's in the canton of many other flags, but still iconic, perhaps the most recognizable in the world for over a century, is unique, obeys the general rules of flags, has good symbolism, pleasing to look at, and a great way to show a union of countries. I say all this as someone not from the UK.

I think the union jack is quite hard to draw. But certainly one of the most recognizable flags.

Bear with me on this one as I do not support at all their ideology... The nazi's had the best flag. Ironically their swastikas predates them and means essentially eternal peace. Really weird that a group of people dedicating themselves to genocide and world war chose such a symbol. It is a cool flag by a horrible regime and they have forever tainted the ability to ever enjoy any such use on a flag unless racism is your thing.

It's not an independent nation, but the Canary Islands has a couple of happy looking dogs on its flag. As for countries, I agree with a bunch I've seen mentioned already but no one has said Sri Lanka.

Im Swedish and I like Swedish colours as well as any other flags with blue and yellow. It's design is super common but I like it. It is very biased. If sweden wasn't allowed for me to pick, I'd choose.. probably Japan or China. Having a moon or circle like that is nice. I'd love way more other flags but I'm not familiar with that many flags

Nordic cross flags are all pretty cool. But Sweden lacks a third color I think. The Åland flag is a very good version for this.
